RESUMO

Optical processors, built with "optical neurons", can efficiently perform high-dimensional linear operations at the speed of light. Thus they are a promising avenue to accelerate large-scale linear computations. With the current advances in micro-fabrication, such optical processors can now be 3D fabricated, but with a limited precision. This limitation translates to quantization of learnable parameters in optical neurons, and should be handled during the design of the optical processor in order to avoid a model mismatch. Specifically, optical neurons should be trained or designed within the physical-constraints at a predefined quantized precision level. To address this critical issues we propose a physics-informed quantization-aware training framework. Our approach accounts for physical constraints during the training process, leading to robust designs. We demonstrate that our approach can design state of the art optical processors using diffractive networks for multiple physics based tasks despite quantized learnable parameters. We thus lay the foundation upon which improved optical processors may be 3D fabricated in the future.

Tropical cities are more susceptible to the suggested fall outs from projected global warming scenarios as they are located in the Torrid Zone and growing at rapid rates. Therefore, research on the mitigation of urban heat island (UHI) effects in tropical cities has attained much significance and increased immensely over recent years. The UHI mitigation strategies commonly used for temperate cities need to be examined in the tropical context since the mechanism of attaining a surface energy balance in the tropics is quite different from that in the mid-latitudes. The present paper evaluates the performance of four different mitigation strategies to counterbalance the impact of UHI phenomena for climate resilient adaptation in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA), India. This has been achieved by reproducing the study sites, selected from three different urban morphologies of open low-rise, compact low-rise and mid-rise residential areas, using ENVI-met V 4.0 and simulating the effects of different mitigation strategies- cool pavement, cool roof, added urban vegetation and cool city (a combination of the three former strategies), in reducing the UHI intensity. Simulation results show that at a diurnal scale during summer, the green city model performed best at neighborhood level to reduce air temperature (Ta) by 0.7 °C, 0.8 °C and 1.1 °C, whereas the cool city model was the most effective strategy to reduce physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) by 2.8° - 3.1 °C, 2.2° - 2.8 °C and 2.8° - 2.9 °C in the mid-rise, compact low-rise and open low-rise residential areas, respectively. It was observed that (for all the built environment types) vegetation played the most significant role in determining surface energy balance in the study area, compared to cool roofs and cool pavements. This study also finds that irrespective of building environments, tropical cities are less sensitive to the selected strategies of UHI mitigation than their temperate counter parts, which can be attributed to the difference in magnitude of urbanness.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify heat-related deaths in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, caused by the urban heat island (UHI) and explore factors that may alleviate the impact of UHIs. METHODS: We estimated district-specific meteorological conditions from 2010 to 2013 using the dynamic downscaling model and calculated the attributable fraction and number of mortalities resulting from the total, extreme, and mild heat in each district. The difference in attributable fraction of total heat between the central and outer districts was classified as the attributable fraction resulting from the UHI. The association among attributable fraction, attributable number with a green space, population density, and budget revenue of each district was then explored. RESULTS: The temperature-mortality relationship between the central and outer areas was almost identical. The attributable fraction resulting from the UHI was 0.42%, which was contributed by the difference in temperature distribution between the 2 areas. Every 1-square-kilometer increase in green space per 1000 people can prevent 7.4 deaths caused by heat. CONCLUSIONS: Green space can alleviate the impacts of UHIs, although future studies conducting a heath economic evaluation of tree planting are warranted.

Following the heatstroke prevention guideline by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan, "safe hours" for heavy and light labor are estimated based on hourly wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) obtained from the three-member ensemble multi-period (the 2000s, 2030s, 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s) climate projections using dynamical downscaling approach. Our target cities are Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. The results show that most of the current climate daytime hours are "light labor safe,", but these hours are projected to decrease by 30-40% by the end of the twenty-first century. A 60-80% reduction is projected for heavy labor hours, resulting in less than 2 hours available for safe performance of heavy labor. The number of "heavy labor restricted days" (days with minimum daytime WBGT exceeding the safe level threshold for heavy labor) is projected to increase from ~5 days in the 2000s to nearly two-thirds of the days in August in the 2090s.

RESUMO

We present a low-loss and small-footprint polarization rotator based on mode evolution. The polarization rotator is composed of an asymmetric-rib waveguide and a tapered waveguide, both of which consist only of a silicon core and a silica cladding. The rotator is fabricated under the same design rules as other device blocks, such as rib-waveguide phase shifters for photonic integration. The polarization rotator is fabricated using CMOS-based processes and provides polarization rotations with an on-chip insertion loss lower than 0.5 dB from transverse-electric (TE) to transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization and a loss lower than 1.0 dB from the TM to TE polarization in a 200 nm wavelength range extending over C and L bands.

RESUMO

A low-loss high-speed silicon in-phase (I) quadrature (Q) modulator is designed, fabricated and characterized. The fabricated IQ modulator has a low passive optical loss of 9 dB in C and L bands. Using the modulator, differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) transmission at 44.6 Gb/s with differential detection is confirmed with an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 16.3 dB for a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-3) and a dispersion tolerance of -96 to 107 ps/nm. Moreover, in digital coherent detection, quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) up to 64 Gb/s are achieved with an OSNR of 11.6-11.8 dB for a BER of 10(-2) at 1530, 1550, and 1610 nm.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify the effect of environmental factors on sleep in the summertime in Japan. METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted in Japan. Age of participants ranged from 20 to 70 years. RESULTS: The mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score was 4.9 (±2.7), and 123 (35.0%) participants had scores of >5. According to the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis, the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for PSQI scores of >5 without installation of air conditioner was 1.8 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-3.3; P<.05), use of a light bulb was 3.7 (95% CI, 1.1-12.6; P<.05), and noise was 2.1 (95% CI, 1.1-4.1; P<.05) after controlling for several confounding variables. Difficulty initiating sleep (DIS) was associated with installation of an air conditioner (1 [reference] to 3 [aOR, 2.5 {95% CI, 1.2-5.1}] and 4 [aOR, 2.8 {95% CI, 1.1-7.1}]) and noise (1 [reference] to 3 [aOR, 2.4 {95% CI, 1.0-5.9}] and 4 [aOR, 8.8 {95% CI, 3.1-25.0}]). Difficulty maintaining sleep (DMS) was associated with installation of a fan (1 [reference] to 2 [aOR, 0.4 {95% CI, 0.2-0.8}] and noise (1 [reference] to 3 [aOR, 2.3 {95% CI, 1.0-5.3}]) after controlling for several confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS: Our finding using analysis of the association between residential environments and subjective sleep statuses, which determined that the installation of an air conditioner and lighting equipment might affect sleep, may be useful to discuss sleep environments and improve sleep quality.

RESUMO

The 11-Gbps 80-km transmission performance of a zero-chirp silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator has been characterized. The zero-chirp characteristic of the silicon modulator is confirmed in the constellation measurement, and gives high tolerance both for positive and negative chromatic dispersion. A low-dispersion-penalty transmission up to 80 km using the 11-Gbps non return-to-zero on-off-keying format is confirmed via bit-error-rate measurements with a performance comparable to that of a commercial lithium-niobate modulator. The dispersion tolerance at 2-dB power penalty for a bit-error-rate of 10(-3) is more than ± 950 ps/nm. Further, 22.3-Gbps binary phase-shift-keying is demonstrated, and the back-to-back power penalty with respect to the lithium-niobate modulator is less than 0.5 dB.

Oxidized pyrimidines are mainly repaired by base excision repair, which is initiated by damage-specific DNA glycosylases. NEIL1, the mammalian homolog of Escherichia coli endonuclease VIII and a major DNA glycosylase, initiates repair of oxidized pyrimidines. Here, we investigated the expression of two putative variant mouse NEIL1 (mNEIL1) mRNAs--variant 1 ("Neil1 protein" mRNA; BC043297 in the NCBI database) and variant 2 ("unnamed protein" mRNA; AK040802 in the NCBI database)--in normal mouse organs. Reverse transcription-PCR showed that both mRNAs were expressed in total RNA samples from 9 organs. Immunoblot analysis of a nuclear extract from normal mouse liver revealed three bands corresponding to full-length mNEIL1 protein and the two predicted variant proteins. However, neither variant protein, which included an N-terminal enzymatic activity domain deduced from the mRNA variants, were enzymatically active under multiple reaction conditions when expressed as his-tagged recombinant proteins. Nevertheless, recombinant variant 1 protein influenced mNEIL1 activity, while recombinant variant 2 protein had no influence. These results suggest that mNEIL1 mRNA variants are expressed in a variety of organs in normal mice and that variant 1 protein may regulate mNEIL1 activity.
