OBJECTIVES: Certain rhythmic arterial pressure waves in humans and animals have been noticed for over one century. We found the novel and slowest arterial pressure waves in children following surgical repair for CHD, and examined their characteristics and clinical implications. METHODS: We enrolled 212 children with 22 types of CHD within postoperative 48 h. We monitored haemodynamics (blood pressure, cardiac cycle efficiency, dP/dTmax), cerebral (ScO2), and renal (SrO2) oxygen saturation every 6 s. Electroencephalogram was continuously monitored. Mean blood flow velocity (Vm) of the middle cerebral artery was measured at 24 h. RESULTS: We found the waves with a frequency of ∼ 90 s immediately following surgical repair in 46 patients in 12 types of CHD (21.7%), being most prevalent in patients with aortic arch abnormalities (Aorta Group, n = 24, 42.3%) or ventricular septal defect (Ventricular Septal Defect Group, n = 12, 23.5%). In Aorta and Ventricular Septal Defect Groups, the occurrence of the waves was associated with lower blood pressures, dP/dTmax, cardiac cycle efficiency, ScO2, SrO2, Vm, worse electroencephalogram background abnormalities, higher number of electroencephalogram sharp waves, and serum lactate (Ps <0.0001-0.07), and were accompanied with fluctuations of ScO2 and SrO2 in 80.6% and 69.6% of patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The waves observed in children following cardiovascular surgery are the slowest ever reported, occurring most frequently in patients with aortic arch abnormalities or ventricular septal defect. While the occurrence of the waves was associated with statistically worse and fluctuated ScO2 and SrO2, worse systemic haemodynamics, and electroencephalogram abnormalities, at present these waves have no known clinical relevance.

Mixed iron-based phosphate Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7/C (NFPP) has gradually emerged as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its affordability and convenient preparation. However, poor electrical conductivity and inadequate sodium-ion diffusion limit the exertion of its electrochemical properties. Herein, a structural modulation strategy based on Cd doping is applied to NFPP to address the above limitations. In situ X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Cd-doped NFPP (NFCPP) undergoes an incomplete solid-solution reaction driven by Fe2+/Fe3+ redox. Cd doping effectively stabilises the crystal structure, resulting in a minimal 1 % change in unit cell volume during cycling. Density of state calculations indicate that Cd doping reduces the band gap, increases the local electron density and significantly improves electron conductivity. Benefitting from the enhanced electrochemical kinetics and intercalation pseudocapacitance, the optimised Na4Fe2.91Cd0.09(PO4)2P2O7/C (NFCPP@3%) exhibits exceptional rate performance (capacity of 62 mAh/g at 20 C) and ultra-long cycling life (82.7 % after 6000 cycles at 20 C). A full SIB prepared using NFCPP@3% and hard carbon, display a 91 % capacity retention rate at a current density of 130 mA g-1 over 200 cycles. This work demonstrates that doping can effectively enhance electrochemical performance and offers insights into future development of SIBs.

RESUMO

Self-control - the ability to alter unwanted impulses and behavior to bring them into agreement with goal-driven responses - is key during adolescence. It helps young people navigate through the myriad challenges they encounter while transitioning into adulthood. We review empirical milestones in our understanding of how individual differences in adolescent self-control exist and develop. We show how the use of molecular genetic measures allows us to move beyond nature versus nurture, and actually investigate how both nature and nurture explain individual differences in self-control. By highlighting the role of gene-environment correlations and gene-environment interactions, this paper aims to enthuse fellow researchers, with or without a background in genetics, to apply genetically sensitive designs too.

BACKGROUND: Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) form a family of integral membrane proteins and play a crucial role in mediating exocytosis in both animals and plants. While SCAMP genes have been studied in several plant species, their functions in cotton, particularly in response to abiotic stress, have not yet been reported. RESULTS: In this study, a total of 53 SCAMP genes were identified in G. arboreum, G. raimondii, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense. These genes were classified into five groups based on a phylogenetic analysis with SCAMPs from Arabidopsis thaliana. The main factor driving the expansion of the SCAMP gene family in G. hirsutum is tandem and segmental duplication events. Using MEME, in addition to the conserved SCAMP domain, we identified 3-13 other domains in each GhSCAMP. The cis-element analysis suggested that GhSCAMPs were widely involved in cotton growth and development, and responses to abiotic stresses. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) results showed that most GhSCAMPs were expressed highly in many tissues and had differential expression responses to drought, cold, and heat stresses. Knock-down of GhSCAMP2 and GhSCAMP4 by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) lead to a salt-sensitive phenotype and had a lower content of CAT, POD, and SOD. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified SCAMP genes in four cotton species, enhancing our understanding of the potential biological functions of SCAMPs. Additionally, we demonstrated that GhSCAMP2 and GhSCAMP4 positively regulate cotton tolerance to salt stress.

Objective: This study aimed to initially adopt an International Healthy Eating Report Card for Preschool-Aged Children to assess the prevalence of healthy eating behaviours and favourable family home food environments (FHFEs) among preschool-aged children in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the US. We also examined which cultural contexts would exhibit significant differences in the report card scores among the four cultural contexts. Methods: In this cross-cultural study, 2059 parent-child dyads, with approximately 500 dyads in each cultural context, were recruited. The parents were asked to complete the validated International Healthy Eating Report Card Scale to assess the dimensions of the Report Card [i.e., Indicator of Children's Eating Behaviours: (1) Children's Dietary Patterns and (2) Children's Mealtime Behaviours, and Indicator of FHFEs: (3) Parental Food Choices and Preparation, (4) Home Healthier Food Availability and Accessibility and (5) Family Mealtime Environments]. Each indicator received a letter grade [i.e., A (≥80%) = excellent, B (60-79%) = good, C (40-59%) = fair, D (20-39%) = poor, F (<20%) = very poor and including the plus (+) and minus (-) signs] to represent the proportion of participants who could meet the predefined benchmarks. We also employed ANCOVA and Bonferroni's post-hoc test to examine the differences in the report card scores between the four cultural contexts. A significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: The average overall report card grade across the four cultural contexts was "B-" (Good), ranging from "C+" (Singapore and the US) to "B-" (Australia and Hong Kong). The average grade for Children's Eating Behaviours was classified as Fair ("C-"), while the average grade for FHFEs was classified as Good ("B+") for all cultural contexts. A comparison of the overall report card scores revealed that Australia exhibited a significantly higher report card score than Singapore and the US, while Hong Kong achieved a significantly higher score than Singapore. Conclusion: The International Healthy Eating Report Card provided an overview of the prevalence of healthy eating in different cultural contexts. We believe that the International Healthy Eating Report Card may offer new perspectives on interventions for fostering healthy eating in young children.

Introduction: Salicylic acid (SA) is a phenolic compound widely found in plants. It plays a key role in exerting plant disease resistance. Panax vietnamensis Ha & Grushv., a valuable medicinal plant, contains high levels of phenolic compounds, which contribute significantly to the resilience of the plant against stress. However, the precise role of SA in regulating the synthesis of secondary metabolites in P.vietnamensis remains elusive. Methods: Two-year-old P. vietnamensis seedlings were treated with exogenous SA. We systematically assessed the changes in the physiological parameters of SA-treated P. vietnamensis leaves, employing transcriptome and metabolome analyses to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Results: Our results revealed a significant improvement of the plant's antioxidant capacity at 6 h post-treatment. Furthermore, exogenous SA treatment promoted the biosynthesis of lignin and flavonoids such as rutin, coumarin, and cyanidin. In addition, it increased the levels of endogenous SA and jasmonic acid (JA), promoting the disease resistance of the plants. Thus, SA pretreatment enhanced the defense of P. vietnamensis against pathogens. Conclusions: Our study provided novel insights into the potential molecular mechanisms underlying SA-mediated biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Furthermore, our results provided a theoretical foundation for optimizing the cultivation practices of P.vietnamensis and the application of SA as a plant immunomodulator.

Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is important because it can serve as an indicator or a predictor of subsequent mortality or morbidity. HRQoL has been shown to be directly related to child growth and development and indirectly related to the healthcare costs of young children. Existing measures of HRQoL in children have heavily relied on traditional questionnaires that use age-suited versions or parent proxy questionnaires. However, both of these methods may present with different types of biases and may misrepresent underlying HRQoL. The current mini reivew will first illustrate these methodological limitations and highlight the potential use of pictorial scales in addition to discussing their suitability for specifically measuring HRQoL as an alternative. We will also synthesize existing recommendations on the development of pictorial scales to provide a protocol as a recommendation to researchers who are aiming to develop an overall HRQoL pictorial scale that is suited for children.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of risk factors for adverse COVID-19 progression in patients with autoimmune diseases is crucial for patient management, but data on the Chinese population are scarce. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of severe COVID-19 in patients using blood cell ratios, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and other inflammatory markers. METHODS: A retrospective study of 855 patients (746 females; median age 49 years) with autoimmune diseases and concurrent COVID-19 was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023 at the Rheumatology and Immunology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Disease severity was assessed according to the 8th edition of the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China's COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines. The clinical classification criteria group mild and moderate cases as nonsevere cases and severe and critical cases as severe cases. A multivariate logistic regression model was established to evaluate the relationships between COVID-19 severity and demographic characteristics, comorbidities, medication use, and laboratory findings. RESULTS: The PLR, NLR, and SII were significantly greater in the severe COVID-19 group than in the nonsevere group (all P < 0.05). In addition to classical independent clinical risk factors, increases in the PLR (OR: 1.004, 95 % CI: 1.001∼1.007, p = 0.001), NLR (OR: 1.180, 95 % CI: 1.041∼1.337, p = 0.010), and SII (OR: 0.999, 95 % CI: 0.998∼1.000, p = 0.005) were identified as risk factors for severe COVID-19 in patients with autoimmune diseases. After adjusting for clinical risk factors, the PLR (AUC: 0.592 vs. 0.865; P < 0.05), NLR (AUC: 0.670 vs. 0.866; P < 0.05), and SII (AUC: 0.616 vs. 0.864; P < 0.05) demonstrated higher predictive values. CONCLUSION: Early prediction of severe COVID-19 in patients with autoimmune diseases can be achieved using the NLR, PLR, and SII.

BACKGROUND: TCbHP (taxane + carboplatin + trastuzumab + pertuzumab) is the preferred neoadjuvant therapy regimen for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. However, no consensus exists regarding whether specific populations may be exempt from carboplatin, allowing for de-escalation to the THP (taxane + trastuzumab + pertuzumab) regimen. Additionally, the optimal number of cycles for neoadjuvant THP remains unclear. We compared the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant TCbHP and THP regimens, providing clinicians with a nuanced perspective to guide their treatment regimen selection. METHODS: This multicenter real-world study included patients with HER2-positive breast cancer undergoing neoadjuvant TCbHP or THP between March 2019 and February 2023. Efficacy was assessed through the pathological complete response (pCR) rate, while safety was evaluated through monitoring adverse events. RESULTS: Among 220 patients, 103 received 6 cycles of TCbHP (TCbHP×6), 83 received 6 cycles of THP (THP×6), and 34 received 4 cycles of THP (THP×4). The TCbHP×6 cohort exhibited a 66% pCR rate compared with 53% in the THP×6 cohort (P = 0.072). Subgroup analysis revealed that in patients aged ≤ 50 years, those with hormone receptor (HR)-negative status, and those with clinical stage T2, the pCR rate of the TCbHP×6 regimen was significantly higher than the THP×6 regimen (P < 0.05). The TCbHP×6 cohort reported higher frequencies of any-grade adverse events (99% versus 86.7%) and grade 3-4 events (49.5% versus 12%) than the THP×6 cohort. Propensity score matching identified 27 patient pairs between the THP×6 and THP×4 cohorts, indicating a significantly higher pCR rate for the THP×6 regimen than the THP×4 regimen (63% versus 29.6%, P = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS: The TCbHP×6 regimen is favored for individuals aged ≤ 50 years and those aged > 50, ≤60 years with HR-negative status or clinical stage T2-4. For patients in compromised general condition or lacking the specified indications, the THP×6 regimen emerges as a lower-toxicity alternative with satisfactory efficacy. To ensure treatment efficacy, a minimum of 6 cycles of neoadjuvant THP is required.

Background: Developing guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of common cancers in China based on the evidence-based practice, the availability of diagnosis and treatment products, and the up-to-date advances in precision medicine is one of the basic tasks of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology Breast Cancer (CSCO BC) Committee. Methods: Protocols with high evidence level and good availability are used as the Level I recommendations; protocols with relatively high evidence level but slightly lower expert consensus or with poor availability are used as the Level II recommendations; and protocols that are clinically applicable but with low evidence level are regarded as the Level III recommendations. Based on the findings of clinical research at home and abroad and the opinions of CSCO BC experts, the CSCO BC guidelines determine the levels of recommendations for clinical application. Results: For human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer, a combination of trastuzumab and pertuzumab regimen were recommended as Level I recommendation for neoadjuvant and first line metastatic breast cancer. Pyrotinib is also recommended as Level I recommendation in first line and second line therapy according to the latest studies conducted in China. Antibody drug conjugates was also recommended for patients with trastuzumab progression. For triple negative breast cancer, immunotherapy in early and metastatic breast cancer was highlighted and listed as new chapters in this version of guideline. For hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer, cyclin dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) was recommended in different stages, especially in adjuvant therapy. There was also a new chapter for HER2-low breast cancer stratified by HR status. Conclusions: We firmly believe that evidence-based, availability-concerned, and consensus-based guidelines will be more feasible for clinical practice in China and in other countries with similar situations.

Objective: To examine the clinical features and synovial pathologies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients across varying titers of circulating anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA). Methodology: We devised a negative pressure suction and rebound synovial biopsy tool to enhance the yield of synovial biopsies, noted for its ease and safety of use. This research involved a retrospective examination of 60 active RA patients who underwent synovial biopsies with this tool from June to November 2013 at our institution. A range of disease activity markers were collected, including DAS28-CRP, ESR, CRP, count of swollen and tender joints, VAS pain scale, and so forth. Synovial tissue underwent HE staining and immunohistochemistry, including synovitis grading (GSS) and counting of B cells (CD20), T cells (CD3), macrophages (CD68), and plasma cells (CD138). Participants: were categorized into three groups as per ACPA titers: ACPA-negative (0-5U/mL), low-titer (5-20U/mL), and high-titer (above 20U/mL). The study compared the clinical features and synovial pathologies across these groups. Results: Of the 60 RA patients, they were segregated into three groups based on ACPA titers: 20 in ACPA-negative, 9 in the low-titer group, and 31 in the high-titer group. No significant differences were observed in GSS scores, synovial cell proliferation and loss, matrix activation, inflammatory infiltration, and neovascularization among these groups (P > 0.05). The high-titer ACPA group demonstrated significantly increased counts of CD3+ T cells, CD20+ B cells, and CD68+ macrophages in synovial tissues compared to the ACPA-negative and low-titer groups (p < 0.05), along with a higher incidence of ectopic lymphoid neogenesis (p < 0.05). Ordinal logistic regression revealed that rheumatoid factor (RF), and counts of synovial T cells, B cells, macrophages, and ectopic lymphoid neogenesis correlated with ACPA titers (P < 0.05), particularly lymphoid neogenesis (OR = 3.63, P = 0.023). Conclusion: RA patients with high-titer ACPA demonstrate elevated levels of inflammatory cell infiltration in synovial tissues, with ectopic lymphoid neogenesis showing a strong correlation with high ACPA positivity.

Mogrosides, which have various pharmacological activities, are mainly extracted from Siraitia grosvenorii (Luo Han Guo) and are widely used as natural zero-calorie sweeteners. Unfortunately, the difficult cultivation and long maturation time of Luo Han Guo have contributed to a shortage of mogrosides. To overcome this obstacle, we developed a highly efficient biosynthetic method using engineered Escherichia coli to synthesize sweet mogrosides from bitter mogrosides. Three UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) genes with primary/branched glycosylation catalytic activity at the C3/C24 sites of mogrosides were screened and tested. Mutant M3, which could catalyze the glycosylation of nine types of mogrosides, was obtained through enhanced catalytic activity. This improvement in ß-(1,6)-glycosidic bond formation was achieved through single nucleotide polymorphisms and direct evolution, guided by 3D structural analysis. A new multienzyme system combining three UGTs and UDP-glucose (UDPG) regeneration was developed to avoid the use of expensive UDPG. Finally, the content of sweet mogrosides in the immature Luo Han Guo extract increased significantly from 57% to 95%. This study not only established a new multienzyme system for the highly efficient production of sweet mogrosides from immature Luo Han Guo but also provided a guideline for the high-value utilization of rich bitter mogrosides from agricultural waste and residues.

The homolysis of chemical bonds represents one of the most fundamental reactivities of excited molecules. Historically, it has been exploited to generate radicals under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. However, unlike most contemporary radical-generating mechanisms, the direct excitation to homolyze chemical bonds and produce aliphatic carbon-centered radicals under visible light remains rare, especially in metallaphotoredox cross couplings. Herein, we present our design of the dihydropyrimidoquinolinone (DHPQ) reagents derived from ketones, which can undergo formal deacylation and homolytic C-C bond cleavage to release alkyl radicals without external photocatalysts. Spectroscopic and computational analysis reveal unique optical and structural features of DHPQs, rationalizing their faster kinetics in alkyl radical generation than a structurally similar but visible-light transparent radical precursor. Such a capability allows DHPQ to facilitate a wide range of Ni-metallaphotoredox cross couplings with aryl, alkynyl and acyl halides. Other catalytic and non-catalyzed alkylative transformations of DHPQs are also feasible with various radical acceptors. We believe this work would be of broad interest, aiding the synthetic planning with simplified operation and expanding the synthetic reach of photocatalyst-free approaches in cutting-edge research.

BACKGROUND: We had reported that postoperative EEG background including sleep-wake cycle (SWC) and discharge (seizures, spikes/sharp waves) abnormalities were significantly correlated with adverse early outcomes in children after cardiac surgery. We aimed to analyze the relations between these EEG abnormalities and neurodevelopmental outcomes at about 2 years after cardiac surgery. METHODS: We enrolled 121 patients undergoing cardiac surgery at 3.3 months (0.03 ~ 28 months). EEG abnormalities described above during the first postoperative 48 h were evaluated. Griffiths Mental Development Scales-Chinese was used to evaluate the quotients of overall development and 5 subscales of the child's locomotor, language, personal-social, eye-hand coordination and performance skills at 16 ~ 31 months of age. RESULTS: EEG background abnormalities occurred in 59/121 (48.8%) patients and 33 (55.9%) unrecovered to normal by 48 h. Abnormal SWC occurred in 15 (12.4%) patients and 7 (5.8%) unrecovered to normal by 48 h. EEG seizures occurred in 11 (9.1%) patients with frontal lobe seizures in 4. Spikes/sharp waves occurred in 100 (82.6%). EEG background abnormalities, number of spikes/sharp waves and frontal lobe seizures were significantly associated with neurodevelopmental impairment at about 1 ~ 2 year after surgery (Ps ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Most parameters of EEG abnormalities were significantly associated with neurodevelopmental impairment after cardiac surgery. IMPACT: Neurodevelopmental impairment in children with congenital heart disease remain poorly understood. Previous studies had reported that either EEG seizures or background abnormalities were associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Our present study showed that all the EEG background and discharge abnormalities including EEG background, seizures and spikes/sharp waves in the early postoperative period were significantly associated with neurodevelopmental impairment at about 1 ~ 2 years after cardiac surgery. Comprehensive evaluation of early postoperative EEG may provide further insights about postoperative brain injury, its relation with neurodevelopmental impairment, and guide to improve clinical management.

The effects of partially substituting Al for Cu in Zr59.62Cu18.4-xNi12Al6+xNb3Hf0.78Y0.2 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 at.%) bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) on their glass-forming ability (GFA), quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties, and energy characteristics were investigated. The results showed that an appropriate substitution of Al for Cu can improve GFA and reach a critical casting size up to 10 mm. Additionally, with Al replacement of Cu, the change in the distribution and content of free volume inside the BMGs was the main reason for the quasi-static compression plasticity. In contrast, the BMGs exhibited no plasticity during dynamic compression and high-speed impact, owing to the short loading time and thermal softening effect. In terms of energy characteristics, all alloys have a high combustion enthalpy. And on the surface of the fragments collected from impact, the active elements Zr, Al, and Nb reacted because of the adiabatic temperature rise. Further, x = 4 at.% Zr-based BMG with its superior overall performance could penetrate a 6 mm Q235 plate at a speed of 1038 m/s, combining excellent mechanical properties and energy characteristics. This study contributes to the development of Zr-based BMGs as novel energetic structural materials.

This study investigated the effects of cross-linking on the characteristics and in-vitro digestibility of starch-sucrose ester (SE) complexes. To achieve this, corn starch (CS) was cross-linked with various concentrations of sodium trimetaphosphate /sodium tripolyphosphate (5 %, 10 %, and 15 %). Subsequently, cross-linked starches (CLS) were complexed with SE through hydrothermal treatment. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that V-type amylose-lipid complexes formed by the interaction between CS and SE. The resultant CS-SE complex significantly reduced CS digestibility, increasing its resistant starch (RS) content from 10.19 % to 22.71 %. The cross-linking modification did not alter the crystalline pattern of the CS-SE complex. Several CLS-SE complexes demonstrated higher enzymatic resistance compared to the CS-SE complex. The CLS10-SE complex exhibited the highest RS content of 39.37 % when the cross-linking agent concentration was 10 %. This phenomenon may be attributable to the cross-linking reaction having enhanced the interaction between starch molecular chains, reducing the solubility and swelling power, thereby hindering the accessibility of starch chains to digestive enzymes. These findings indicate that cross-linking modification is a practical approach to improving the anti-digestion performance of starch-lipid complexes.

BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease. Although several large-scale studies have investigated MBC patients in other countries, the features of MBC patients in China have not been fully explored. This study aims to explore the features of Chinese MBC patients comprehensively. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data of MBC patients from 36 centers in China. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test, and Cox regression analyses. Multivariate Cox analyses were used to identify independent prognostic factors of the patients. RESULTS: In total, 1119 patients were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 60.9 years, and a significant extension over time was observed (P < 0.001). The majority of the patients (89.1 %) received mastectomy. Sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed in 7.8 % of the patients diagnosed in 2009 or earlier, and this percentage increased significantly to 38.8 % in 2020 or later (P < 0.001). The five-year OS rate for the population was 85.5 % [95 % confidence interval (CI), 82.8 %-88.4 %]. Multivariate Cox analysis identified taxane-based [T-based, hazard ratio (HR) = 0.32, 95 % CI, 0.13 to 0.78, P = 0.012] and anthracycline plus taxane-based (A + T-based, HR = 0.47, 95 % CI, 0.23 to 0.96, P = 0.037) regimens as independent protective factors for OS. However, the anthracycline-based regimen showed no significance in outcome (P = 0.175). CONCLUSION: As the most extensive MBC study in China, we described the characteristics, treatment and prognosis of Chinese MBC population comprehensively. T-based and A + T-based regimens were protective factors for OS in these patients. More research is required for this population.

In infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD), severe pulmonary lobar emphysema may occur as a complication, contributing to significant impairment in ventilation. Clinical management of these infants is extremely challenging and some may require lobectomy to improve ventilation. However, prior to the lobectomy, it is very difficult to assess whether the remaining lung parenchyma would be able to sustain adequate ventilation postoperatively. In addition, preoperative planning and perioperative management are also quite challenging in these patients. This paper reports the utility of selective bronchial occlusion in assessing the safety and efficacy of lobectomy in a case of sBPD complicated by severe right upper lobar emphysema. Since infants with sBPD already have poor lung development and significant lung injury, lobectomy should be viewed as a non-traditional therapy and be carried out with extreme caution. Selective bronchial occlusion test can be an effective tool in assessing the risks and benefits of lobectomy in cases with sBPD and lobar emphysema. However, given the technical difficulty, successful application of this technique requires close collaboration of an experienced interdisciplinary team.

Introduction: Manganese (Mn) plays a pivotal role in plant growth and development. Aside aiding in plant growth and development, Mn as heavy metal (HM) can be toxic in soil when applied in excess. Morus alba is an economically significant plant, capable of adapting to a range of environmental conditions and possessing the potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soil by HMs. The mechanism by which M. alba tolerates Mn stresses remains obscure. Methods: In this study, Mn concentrations comprising sufficiency (0.15 mM), higher regimes (1.5 mM and 3 mM), and deficiency (0 mM and 0.03 mM), were applied to M. alba in pot treatment for 21 days to understand M. alba Mn tolerance. Mn stress effects on the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll content, plant morphological traits, enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters were analyzed as well as metabolome signatures via non-targeted LC-MS technique. Results: Mn deficiency and toxicity decrease plant biomass, Pn, Ci, Gs, Tr, and chlorophyll content. Mn stresses induced a decline in the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), while peroxidase (POD) activity, and leaf Mn content, increased. Soluble sugars, soluble proteins, malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline exhibited an elevation in Mn deficiency and toxicity concentrations. Metabolomic analysis indicates that Mn concentrations induced 1031 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs), particularly amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, benzene and derivatives and secondary metabolites. The DEMs are significantly enriched in alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, galactose metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, pentose phosphate pathway, carbon metabolism, etc. Discussion and conclusion: The upregulation of Galactinol, Myo-inositol, Jasmonic acid, L-aspartic acid, Coproporphyrin I, Trigonelline, Pantothenol, and Pantothenate and their significance in the metabolic pathways makes them Mn stress tolerance metabolites in M. alba. Our findings reveal the fundamental understanding of DEMs in M. alba's response to Mn nutrition and the metabolic mechanisms involved, which may hold potential significance for the advancement of M. alba genetic improvement initiatives and phytoremediation programs.
