RESUMO

The formation of disulfide bonds is of the utmost importance for a wide range of food products with gluten or globular proteins as functional agents. Here, the impact of mineral electrolyte composition of aqueous solutions on thiol oxidation kinetics was studied, using glutathione (GSH) and cysteine (CYS) as model systems. Interestingly, the oxidation rate of both compounds into their corresponding disulfides was significantly higher in common tap water than in ultrapure water. The systematic study of different electrolyte components showed that especially CaCl2 improved the oxidation rate of GSH. However, this effect was not observed for CYS, which indicated a strong impact of the local chemical environment on thiol oxidation kinetics.

RESUMO

The treatment of femoropopliteal lesions has known an important evolution in the last years. An important limitation of current endovascular therapy remains the occurrence of restenosis. In order to minimize restenosis rates, drug eluting technologies are evolving. The use of drug-eluting stents (DES) in coronary arteries shows beneficial results, leading to investigation of DES in femoropopliteal arteries. In this article, we give an overview of current available data on treatment with drug eluting technologies in the superficial femoral artery (SFA). This paper summarizes also the current available data of the use of drug-coated balloons (DCB) in the femoropopliteal tract. Currently, no data are available on the use of DCB in long lesions. A drug eluting bioresorbable scaffold seems to be very promising in coronary arteries. The transfer to the peripheral area is nowadays ongoing. Which technique and device for which lesion and patient requires further investigation to build up a real evidence based SFA treatment strategy.

RESUMO

Granular cell tumour (GCT) is a rare neoplasm that can be found in multiple sites throughout the body. Occasionally GCT is located in the breast. In general, it appears as a singular benign lesion, although it can be multi-focal and rare cases with malignant behaviour have been reported. We report a rare case of granular cell tumour of the nipple in the male breast, treated by wide local excision.

RESUMO

These case reports describe the rare condition of liposarcoma of the funiculus spermaticus. It is treated by radical surgical resection. The diagnosis is usually made postoperatively. The role of adjuvant radio- or chemotherapy is uncertain.

RESUMO

The increased risk of diabetes mellitus in adult patients treated with second generation antipsychotics is a topic that has been vigorously debated in recent years. However, a literature search indicates that only very limited information is available about the use and the potential metabolic risks of antipsychotics in children and adolescents. We present and discuss a case study in which severe glucose abnormalities were detected in a 14-year-old, non-psychotic patient who was being treated with risperidone. The glucose abnormalities were found to be reversible when risperidone was discontinued. The case-study highlights the importance of screening for and detection of metabolic abnormalities in children and adolescents who are being treated with second generation antipsychotics. It is particularly important that children with additional risk factors are closely monitored.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of perinatal environmental factors on early sensitization, atopic dermatitis and wheezing during the first year. METHODS: Information on pregnancy-related factors, parental atopic history, environmental factors and the clinical course of the infant until age one was gathered by questionnaires, as part of a prospective birth cohort study (Prospective study on the Influence of Perinatal factors on the Occurrence of asthma and allergies [PIPO-study]). Quantification of total and specific IgE was performed in 810 children and their parents. RESULTS: Early sensitization was found in 107/810 (13%) of the infants. Multiple regression analysis showed that specific IgE in fathers was a risk factor for early sensitization in their daughters (adjusted odds ratios (OR(adj)) 2.21 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10-4.49); P=0.03), whereas in boys, day care attendance was shown to be protective for early sensitization (OR(adj) 0.38 (95% CI 0.20-0.71); P=0.001). Atopic dermatitis occurred in 195/792 infants (25%). Specific IgE in the mother (OR(adj) 1.52 (95% CI 1.06-2.19); P=0.02) and in the infant (OR(adj) 4.20 (95% CI 2.63-6.68); P<0.001) were both risk factors for the occurence of atopic dermatitis, whereas postnatal exposure to cats was negatively associated with atopic dermatitis (OR(adj) 0.68 (0.47-0.97); P=0.03). Postnatal exposure to cigarette smoke (OR(adj) 3.31 (95% CI 1.79-6.09); P<0.001) and day care attendance (OR(adj) 1.96 (95% CI 1.18-3.23); P=0.009) were significantly associated with early wheezing, which occurred in 25% (197/795) of the infants. CONCLUSION: The effect of paternal sensitization and day care attendance on sensitization is gender dependent. Maternal sensitization predisposes for atopic dermatitis, whereas postnatal exposure to cats had a protective effect.

RESUMO

The behavioral role of the middle temporal (MT/V5) area and its satellites in motion processing is still unclear, particularly the degree to which MT/V5 proper is critical for different types of motion processing. Therefore, effects of small and large lesions in the caudal part of the superior temporal sulcus of macaque monkeys were compared for two tasks requiring different types of motion processing: a direction and a kinetic orientation discrimination. The small lesion was restricted to the peripheral representation of MT/V5 but included V4t, whereas the large lesion included all of MT/V5 and the medial superior temporal (MST) area as well as substantial parts of the floor of the superior temporal (FST) area. Both lesions resulted in significant and long-lasting impairment of direction discrimination but had a lesser effect on kinetic orientation discrimination. Thus the effects of small STS lesions on motion perception are much stronger than expected.
