INTRODUCTION: The incidence of localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is on the rise among individuals aged 70 and older. While the gold standard for treatment remains surgical resection, some elderly and frail patients with comorbidities are not eligible for this procedure. In selected cases, percutaneous thermal ablation, such as cryotherapy, microwave and radiofrequency, offers less invasive options. General anesthesia is sometimes necessary for such treatments, but most of the procedures can be conducted using mild or deep conscious sedation. This approach is preferably recommended for small cT1a tumors situated at a distance from the renal hilum and/or ureter. Active surveillance remains an alternative in the case of small low grade RCC although it may induce anxiety in certain patients. Recent research has highlighted the potentials of stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) as a noninvasive, well-tolerated, and effective treatment for small renal tumors. This narrative review aims to explore recent advances in SABR for localized RCC, including appropriate patient selection, treatment modalities and administration, as well as efficacy and tolerance assessment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a literature review using the terms [kidney cancer], [renal cell carcinoma], [stereotactic radiotherapy], [SBRT], and [SABR] in the Medline, PubMed, and Embase databases, focusing on prospective and relevant retrospective studies published in English. RESULTS: Studies report local control rates ranging from 70% to 100% with SABR, highlighting its efficacy in treating RCC. The decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is approximately -5 to -17mL/min over the years following SABR. Common toxicities are rare, primarily CTCAE grade 1, include fatigue, nausea, chest or back pain, diarrhea, or gastritis. CONCLUSION: Stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) may be considered as a viable option for patients with localized RCC who are not suitable candidates for surgery with a high local control rate and a favorable safety profile. This approach should be discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting and results from ongoing clinical trials are awaited.

Supramolecular polymers built from stimuli-responsive host-guest interactions represent an attractive way of tailoring smart materials. Herein, we exploit the chaotropic effect of polyoxometalates and related host-guest properties to design unconventional polymer systems with reversible redox and thermo-responsive sol-gel transition. These supramolecular networks result from the association of cyclodextrin-based oligomers and Keggin-type POMs acting as electro-active crosslinking agents. The structure and the dynamics of such self-assembly systems have been investigated using a multiscale approach involving MALDI-TOF, viscosity measurements, cyclic voltammetry, 1H-NMR (1D and DOSY), and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering. Our results reveal that the chaotropic effect corresponds to a powerful and efficient force that can be used to induce responsiveness in hybrid supramolecular oligomeric systems.

Super-reduction of polyoxometalates (POMs) in solution is of fundamental interest for designing innovative energy storage systems. In this article, we show that the "Dawson-like" POM can undergo a disproportionation process during its massive electron uptake, leading to species containing three metal-metal bonds as evidenced by X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H and 183 W NMR), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV/Vis, and voltammetry techniques. This result indicates that electron storing within metal-metal bonds is not a unique property of Keggin-type POM as postulated since the 70s. Besides, we demonstrate that the presence of an electron-rich triad in the "Dawson-like" POM allows its post-functionalization with additional tungstate ions, generating a chiral molecule that is also the largest WIV -containing POMs known to date.

Natural cyclodextrin (CD) macrocycles are known to form diverse inclusion complexes with a wide variety of organic molecules, but recent work has revealed that inorganic clusters also form multicomponent supramolecular complexes and edifices. Such molecular assemblies exhibit a high degree of organization in solution governed by various chemical processes including molecular recognition, host-guest attraction, hydrophobic repulsion, or chaotropic effect. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most efficient and practical analytical techniques to characterize the nature, the strength and the mechanism of these interactions in solution. This review provides a brief overview on recent examples of the contribution of NMR to the characterization of hybrid systems in solution based on CD with polynuclear clusters, including polyoxometalates (POMs), metallic clusters and hydroborate clusters. The focus will be first on using 1H (and 13C) NMR of the host, i.e., CD, to identify the nature of the interactions and measure their strength. Then, 2D NMR methods will be illustrated by DOSY as a means of highlighting the clustering phenomena, and by NOESY/ROESY to evidence the spatial proximity and contact within the supramolecular assemblies. Finally, other NMR nuclei will be selected to probe the inorganic part as a guest molecule. Attention will be paid to classical host-guest complexes Cluster@CD, but also to hierarchical multi-scale, multi-component assemblies such as Cluster@CD@Cluster.

Evidence for photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer from the excited state of the [Mo6I8Cl6]2- electron-rich cluster to polyoxometalates (POMs) is reported. We demonstrate that the global charge density of POMs affects the efficiency of electron transfer. This work paves the way for the rational design of photocatalytic systems using cluster-based complexes as robust noble-metal-free photosensitizers.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent a promising class of molecular electron reservoirs. However, their multielectron reduction gives rise to intricate physical-chemical phenomena that must be fully understood for their future use in energy-storage devices. Herein, we show that bulk electrolysis of the archetypal Keggin-type POM [Si(WVI2MoVIO10)(WVI3O10)3]4- in aqueous solution leads to the six-electron-reduced derivative [Si(WIV2MoIVO7(H2O)3)(WVI3O10)3]4- (notated SiW11Mo-VI') in which the mixed-metal triad acts as a storage unit for six electrons and six protons. X-ray diffraction analysis and multinuclear NMR (183W and 95Mo) studies reveal that this electron-rich species represents the first example of POMs containing heterometallic metal-metal bonds between addenda centers. This electron-rich POM can be further reduced through multielectronic events, while its full oxidation restores the structure of the oxidized parent ion. Remarkably, the formation of SiW11Mo-VI' results from a fast clustering process compared to that observed for the entirely W-based analogue, revealing that the formation of metal-metal bonds in the mixed-metal Mo/W POM is facilitated because the reaction rate is not limited by a slow disproportionation step. Last, we evaluate the supramolecular properties of SiW11Mo-VI' using a method based on the cloud-point measurement of a nonionic surfactant. This investigation demonstrates that the clustering process has dramatic consequences on the solution behavior of the POM, canceling its superchaotropic character due to a local structuring effect of the hydration shell. These fundamental results pave the way for applications using the massive electron-storage properties of mixed-metal POMs.

Herein we report the synthesis of a new class of compounds associating Keggin and Dawson-type Polyoxometalates (POMs) with a derivative of the anionic decahydro-closo-decaborate cluster [B10H10]2- through aminopropylsilyl ligand (APTES) acting as both a linker and a spacer between the two negatively charged species. Three new adducts were isolated and fully characterized by various NMR techniques and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, notably revealing the isolation of an unprecedented monofunctionalized SiW10 derivative stabilized through intramolecular H-H dihydrogen contacts. DFT as well as electrochemical studies allowed studying the electronic effect of grafting the decaborate cluster on the POM moiety and its consequences on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties.

Keggin-type molybdo- and tungsto-phosphate polyoxoanions are among the most popular polyoxometalates (POMs) but suffer from their limited stability at low pH in aqueous solution. Their superchaotropic properties generate strong supramolecular complexes with cyclodextrins (CDs), which significantly affect the hydrolytic stability of POM. This chaotropically driven stabilization effect was systematically monitored by 31P NMR spectroscopy covering a wide range of pH (from 0 to 8) and varying the nature of the CD (α-, ß-, and γ-form). A shift of ca. two pH units of the stability domains of these POMs was found in the presence of two equivalents of γ-CD compared to pure water, leading to keep intact the PW12O403- anion without any decomposition up to pH 3.5 (versus 1.5 in pure water) and pH 2.5 for PMo12O403-, which begins to decompose even at pH 0 in pure water. The effect of the smaller CDs (α- and ß-form) is much less pronounced (only 0.5 pH units shift of the stability domain) confirming the importance of host-guest size matching to form a sandwich-type inclusion complex and thus protect the POM structure against basic hydrolysis. Such complexation was further supported by 183W and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Finally, using quantitative 31P NMR analyses, the new speciation and formation constants of phospho-molybdates and phospho-tungstates in the presence of cyclodextrins are determined and compared to those previously reported in pure water or in the 50:50 water/1,4-dioxane mixture.

Polyoxothiometalate ions (ThioPOM) are active hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) catalysts based on modular assembly built from electrophilic clusters {MoSx } and vacant polyoxotungstates. Herein, the dumbbell-like anion [{(PW11 O39 )Mo3 S4 (H2 O)3 (OH)}2 ]8- exhibits very high light-driven HER activity, while the active cores {Mo3 S4 } do not contain any exposed disulfido ligands, which were suspected to be the origin of the HER activity. Moreover, in the catalyst architecture, the two central {Mo3 S4 } cores are sandwiched by two {PW11 O39 }7- subunits that act as oxidant-resistant protecting groups and behave as electron-collecting units. A detailed photophysical study was carried out confirming the reductive quenching mechanism of the photosensitizer [Ir(ppy)2 (dtbbpy)]+ by the sacrificial donor triethanolamine (TEOA) and highlighting the very high rate constant of the electron transfer from the reduced photosensitizer to the ThioPOM catalyst. Such results provide new insights into the field of molecular catalytic systems able to promote high HER activity.

The development of hybrid materials based on polyoxometalates constitutes a strategy for the design of multifunctional materials. The slow evaporation of an aqueous solution of [NaP5W30O110]14- in the presence of γ-Cyclodextrin (γ-CD) led to the crystallization of a K6Na8{[NaP5W30O110]•(C48H80O40)}•23H2O (NaP5W30•1CD) supramolecular compound, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. Structural analysis revealed the formation of 1:1 {[NaP5W30O110]•[γ-CD]}14- adduct in the solid state. Studies in solution by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and 31P DOSY, have demonstrated weak interactions between the inorganic anion and the macrocyclic organic molecule.

The complexation of Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) leads to supramolecular inclusion assemblies in aqueous solution driven by a chaotropic effect. The strength of the interaction between γ-CD and oxidized or one-electron reduced POMs in a series of molybdenum and vanadium monosubstituted phospho- and silico-tungstates, [XW11MO40]n- Keggin-type anions where X = P or Si and M = MoV/VI or VIV/V, has been evaluated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), NMR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Such a study reveals that the host-guest binding constant K1:1 increases strongly with the decrease of the global ionic charge of the POM unit. There is an almost one magnitude order of variation in K1:1 per charge unit, where K1:1 falls down from about 105 M-1 to values close to zero as ionic charge varies from 3- to 6-. Such POMs with molybdenum and vanadium addenda offer the possibility of tuning the host-guest association strength by the simple addition/removal of one electron to POMs, opening a new avenue for the design of smart materials through redox stimuli.

The association of metallic clusters (CLUS) and polyoxometalates (POM) into hierarchical architectures is achieved using γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) as a supramolecular connector. The new self-assembled systems, so-called CLUSPOM, are formed from Dawson-type polyoxometalate [P2W18O62]6- and electron-rich rhenium clusters. It is worth noting that a cluster-based cation [{Re6Se8}(H2O)6]2+ on one hand and a cluster-based anion on the other hand [{Re6Se8}(CN)6]4- can be associated with the anionic POM. In the absence of the supramolecular connector, a "CLUSPOM salt" was obtained from aqueous solution of the cationic cluster and the polyoxometalate. In this solid, the arrangement between the polymetallic building blocks is mainly governed by long-range Coulombic interactions. In the presence of γ-CD, the Dawson anion and the cationic cluster are assembled differently, forming a hierarchical supramolecular solid, K2[{Re6Se8}(H2O)6]2{[P2W18O62]@2γ-CD}·42H2O, where the organic macrocycle acts as a ditopic linker between the inorganic building blocks. In such an edifice, the short-range molecular recognition dominates the long-range Coulombic interactions leading to a specific three-dimensional organization. Interestingly, the assembling of anionic POM [P2W18O62]6- with the anionic rhenium cluster [{Re6Se8}(CN)6]4- is also achieved with γ-CD despite the repulsive forces between the nanosized anions. The resulting solid, K10{[{Re6Se8}(CN)6]@2γ-CD}[P2W18O62]·33H2O, is built from 1:2 inclusion complexes {[{Re6Se8}(CN)6]@2γ-CD}4- linked by a POM unit interacting with the exterior wall of the organic macrocycle. Multinuclear NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering investigations support supramolecular preorganization in aqueous solution prior to crystallization.

BACKGROUND: Infection-related glomerulonephritis with IgA deposits (IRGN-IgA) is a rare disease but it is increasingly reported in the literature. Data regarding epidemiology and outcome are lacking, especially in Europe. We aimed to assess the clinical, pathologic and outcome data of IRGN-IgA. METHODS: Clinical and outcome data from patients from 11 French centers over the 2007-2017 period were collected retrospectively. We reviewed pathologic patterns and immunofluorescence of renal biopsies and evaluated C4d expression in IRGN-IgA. We analyzed the correlation between histological presentation and outcome. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients (23 men, mean age: 62 ± 15 years) were included. Twenty-one (78%) had Staphylococcus aureus infection and twelve (44%) were diabetic. At the time of biopsy, 95.2% had haematuria, 48.1% had a serum creatinine level of > 4 mg/dL, and 16% had hypocomplementemia. The most common pathologic presentation included mesangial (88.9%) and endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis (88.9%) with interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IF/TA) (85.1%). Diffuse and global glomerular C4d expression was found in 17.8%, mostly in biopsies with acute or subacute patterns, and was associated with a short delay between infection and renal biopsy compared to segmental and focal staining. After median follow-up of 13.2 months, 23.1% died, 46.2% had persistent renal dysfunction and 15.4% reached end-stage renal disease. Renal outcome was correlated to IF/TA severity. CONCLUSIONS: Infection-related glomerulonephritis with IgA deposits is usually associated with Staphylococcus infections and mainly affects adult men. This entity has a poor prognosis which is correlated to interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy severity.

The clinicopathological characteristics of kidney infiltration in B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders remain poorly described. We retrospectively studied 52 adults with biopsy-proven malignant B-cell kidney infiltration, including Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (n=21), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (n=11), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (n=8), other lymphoma (n=11), and multiple myeloma (n=1). Kidney disease varied according to the underlying lymphoproliferative disorder. In DLBCL, malignant kidney infiltration was prominent, resulting in acute kidney injury (AKI, 75%) and kidney enlargement (88%). In the other types, associated immunoglobulin-related nephropathy (most commonly AL amyloidosis) was more common (45%), and chronic kidney disease with proteinuria was the primary presentation. All patients received chemotherapy. Over a median follow-up of 31 months, 20 patients died and 21 reached end-stage kidney disease. Renal response, achieved in 25 patients (48%), was associated with higher overall survival (97 vs. 37 months in non-renal responders). In univariate analysis, percentage of sclerotic glomeruli, kidney enlargement, and complete hematological response at 6 months were predictive of renal response. In multivariate analysis, concomitant immunoglobulin-related nephropathy was the sole independent predictor of poor renal outcome. In conclusion, clinical presentation of renal lymphomatous infiltration depends on the nature of the underlying lymphoproliferative disorder. In DLBCL, massive renal infiltration manifests with enlarged kidneys and AKI, and the diagnosis primarily relies on lymph node biopsy. In other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders, the clinicopathological spectrum is more heterogeneous, with a high frequency of immunoglobulin-related nephropathy that may affect renal outcome; thus kidney biopsy is required for early diagnosis and prognostic assessment.

Three Wells-Dawson polyoxotungstates-based hybrid compounds of general formula [M(C3H7NO)6][{M(C3H7NO)5}2(µ-P2W18O62)]· nC3H7NO· n'H2O [with M = MnII (1), FeII (2), CoII (3) ; n = 2, 2, 3 and n' = 0, 0, 1, respectively] were synthesized at room temperature by a facile method and characterized by IR and 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy studies, thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry thermal analyses, UV-vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) powder and single-crystal XRD analyses, and cyclic voltammetry studies. From the X-ray study, it was established that the metal (M = Mn, Fe, Co) is located on an inversion center, being octahedrally coordinated to six dimethylformamide (DMF) molecules to form the complex cation [M(dmf)6]2+. Also, in the dinuclear complex anion [{M(dmf)5}2(µ-P2W18O62)]2-, the M atoms are coordinated to five DMF molecules through the oxygen atoms, while the sixth coordination site is occupied by a terminal oxygen atom of the Wells-Dawson anion [P2W18O62]6- that plays the role of a bridging ligand. The crystal components are connected through numerous weak C-H···O hydrogen bonds to construct a three-dimensional network. The UV-vis shows the two characteristic absorption bands for the three compounds at 266-268 and 297 nm. These two strong bands are attributed to the charge-transfer absorption band of Ot-W and Ob/c-W, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry study of compounds (1), (2), and (3) reveals at least two reduction reversible peaks ascribed to a Wells-Dawson cluster.

The platinum nanoparticles used as the catalyst in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) represent approximately 46 % of the total price of the cells for a large-scale production, and this is one of the barriers to their commercialization. Therefore, the recycling of the platinum catalyst could be the best alternative to limit the production costs of PEMFCs. The usual recovery routes for spent catalysts containing platinum are pyro-hydrometallurgical processes in which a calcination step is followed by aqua regia treatment, and these processes generate fumes and NOx emissions, respectively. The electrochemical recovery route proposed here is more environmentally friendly, performed under "soft" temperature conditions, and does not result in any gas emissions. It consists of the coupling of the electrochemical leaching of platinum in chloride-based ionic liquids (ILs), followed by its electrodeposition. The leaching of platinum was studied in pure ILs and in ionic-liquid melts at different temperatures and with different chloride contents. Through the modulation of the composition of the ionic-liquid melts, it is possible to leach and electrodeposit the platinum from fuel-cell electrodes in a single-cell process under an inert or ambient atmosphere.

Major uses of thermoelectricity concern refrigeration purposes, using Peltier devices, mainly composed of antimony, bismuth and tellurium. Antimony was identified as a critical raw material by EU and resources of bismuth and tellurium are not inexhaustible, so it is necessary to imagine the recycling of thermoelectric devices. That for, a complete characterization is needed, which is the aim of this work. Peltier devices were manually dismantled in three parts: the thermoelectric legs, the alumina plates on which remain the electrical contacts and the silicone paste used to connect the plates. The characterization was performed using five Peltier devices. It includes mass balances of the components, X-ray diffraction analysis of the thermoelectric legs and elemental analysis of each part of the device. It appears that alumina represents 45% of a Peltier device in weight. The electrical contacts are mainly composed of copper and tin, and the thermoelectric legs of bismuth, tellurium and antimony. Thermoelectric legs appear to be Se-doped Bi2Te3 and (Bi0,5Sb1,5)Te3 for n type and p type semiconductors, respectively. This work shows that Peltier devices can be considered as a copper ore and that thermoelectric legs contain high amounts of bismuth, tellurium and antimony compared to their traditional resources.

In the attempt to harmonize clinical practices between different centers belonging to the Francophone society of bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy (SFGM-TC), our society set up the sixth annual series of workshops which brought together practitioners from all member centers and took place in September 2015 in Lille. Here, we report our recommendations regarding diagnosis and disease status coding in the ProMISe database used by the SFGM-TC.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCC) frequently display a loss of function of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the putative relationship between VHL mutation status and immune checkpoint ligand programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A series of 32 renal tumors composed of 11 VHL tumor-associated and 21 sporadic RCCs were used to evaluate PD-L1 expression levels after sequencing of the three exons and exon-intron junctions of the VHL gene. The 786-O, A498, and RCC4 cell lines were used to investigate the mechanisms of PD-L1 regulation. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Fisher's exact test was used for VHL mutation and Kruskal-Wallis test for PD-L1 expression. If no covariate accounted for the association of VHL and PD-L1, then a Kruskal-Wallis test was used; otherwise Cochran-Mantel-Haenzsel test was used. We also used the Fligner-Policello test to compare two medians when the distributions had different dispersions. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: We demonstrated that tumors from ccRCC patients with VHL biallelic inactivation (ie, loss of function) display a significant increase in PD-L1 expression compared with ccRCC tumors carrying one VHL wild-type allele. Using the inducible VHL 786-O-derived cell lines with varying hypoxia-inducible factor-2 alpha (HIF-2α) stabilization levels, we showed that PD-L1 expression levels positively correlate with VHL mutation and HIF-2α expression. Targeting HIF-2α decreased PD-L1, while HIF-2α overexpression increased PD-L1 mRNA and protein levels in ccRCC cells. Interestingly, chromatin immunoprecipitation and luciferase assays revealed a direct binding of HIF-2α to a transcriptionally active hypoxia-response element in the human PD-L1 proximal promoter in 786-O cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our work provides the first evidence that VHL mutations positively correlate with PD-L1 expression in ccRCC and may influence the response to ccRCC anti-PD-L1/PD-1 immunotherapy. PATIENT SUMMARY: We investigated the relationship between von Hippel-Lindau mutations and programmed death-ligand 1 expression. We demonstrated that von Hippel-Lindau mutation status significantly correlated with programmed death-ligand 1 expression in clear cell renal cell carcinomas.

The aim of this paper is the characterization of spent NiCd batteries and the characterization of an industrial Black Mass obtained after crushing spent NiCd batteries and physical separation in a treatment plant. The characterization was first performed with five cylindrical NiCd batteries which were manually dismantled. Their characterization includes mass balance of the components, active powders elemental analysis and phase identification by X-ray powder diffraction. Chemical speciation of the two metals was also investigated. For cadmium, speciation was previously developed on solid synthetic samples. In a spent battery, the active powders correspond to about 43% of the battery weight. The other components are the separator and polymeric pieces (5%), the support plates (25%) and the carbon steel external case (27%). The sequential procedure shows that the nickel in the positive powders from the dismantled Ni-Cd batteries is distributed between Ni0 (39.7%), Ni(OH)2 (58.5%) and NiOOH (1.8%). Cadmium in the negative powder is about 99.9% as the Cd(OH)2 form with 0.1% of metal cadmium. In the industrial Black Mass, the distribution of cadmium is the same, whereas the distribution of nickel is Ni0 (46.9%), Ni(OH)2 (43.2%) and NiOOH (9.9%). This material contains also 1.8% cobalt and approx. 1% iron.
