This study investigated the impact of rehabilitation exercise on functional recovery and morphological changes following thoracic contusive spinal cord injury. After a 7-day recovery period after spinal cord injury, mice were assigned to either a trained group (10 weeks of voluntary running wheel or forced treadmill exercise) or an untrained group. Bi-weekly assessments revealed that the exercise-trained group, particularly the voluntary wheel exercise subgroup, displayed significantly improved locomotor recovery, more plasticity of dopaminergic and serotonin modulation compared with the untrained group. Additionally, exercise interventions led to gait pattern restoration and enhanced transcranial magnetic motor-evoked potentials. Despite consistent injury areas across groups, exercise training promoted terminal innervation of descending axons. In summary, voluntary wheel exercise shows promise for enhancing outcomes after thoracic contusive spinal cord injury, emphasizing the role of exercise modality in promoting recovery and morphological changes in spinal cord injuries. Our findings will influence future strategies for rehabilitation exercises, restoring functional movement after spinal cord injury.
RESUMO
INTRODUCTION: Rare variants in ABCA1 increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). ABCA1 facilitates the lipidation of apolipoprotein E (apoE). This study investigated whether microRNA-33 (miR-33)-mediated regulation of this ABCA1-APOE pathway affects phenotypes of an amyloid mouse model. METHODS: We generated mir-33+/+;APP/PS1 and mir-33-/-;APP/PS1 mice to determine changes in amyloid pathology using biochemical and histological analyses. We used RNA sequencing and mass spectrometry to identify the transcriptomic and proteomic changes between our genotypes. We also performed mechanistic experiments by determining the role of miR-33 in microglial migration and amyloid beta (Aß) phagocytosis. RESULTS: Mir-33 deletion increases ABCA1 levels and reduces Aß accumulation and glial activation. Multi-omics studies suggested miR-33 regulates the activation and migration of microglia. We confirm that the inhibition of miR-33 significantly increases microglial migration and Aß phagocytosis. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that miR-33 might be a potential drug target by modulating ABCA1 level, apoE lipidation, Aß level, and microglial function. HIGHLIGHTS: Loss of microRNA-33 (miR-33) increased ABCA1 protein levels and the lipidation of apolipoprotein E. Loss of miR-33 reduced amyloid beta (Aß) levels, plaque deposition, and gliosis. mRNAs and proteins dysregulated by miR-33 loss relate to microglia and Alzheimer's disease. Inhibition of miR-33 increased microglial migration and Aß phagocytosis in vitro.
RESUMO
Invasive species and climate change are primary factors influencing biodiversity, and examining the behavior of invasive species is essential for effective conservation management. Here, we report the global distribution of the sika deer (Cervus nippon) based on locations reported in published literature (Google Scholar), the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) database, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature report. We used the maximum entropy (Maxent) model to examine the impact of climate change on sika deer habitats in South Korea based on GBIF occurrence data and WorldClim bioclimatic variables. Habitat suitability analysis was performed using the Maxent model under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 (for predicted climatic conditions in both 2050 and 2070) to project the effects of different climate change scenarios on South Korean sika deer habitats. We identified that the sika deer is distributed in 39 countries worldwide. Due to climate change effects, South Korean sika deer habitats will decline by approximately 24.98% and 20.63% (under RCP 4.5) and by 50.51% and 57.35% (under RCP 8.5) by 2050 and 2070, respectively. Our findings shed light on sika deer ecology and provide reference data for future conservation management strategies and policy design.

Habitat-specific and movement-related behavioral studies are essential for the development of sustainable biodiversity management practices. Although the number of studies on sika deer is increasing, habitat utilization distribution (UD)-related studies remain limited. In this study, we investigated the habitat UD behavior of sika deer (Cervus nippon) using a literature survey and an experimental study on Suncheon Bonghwasan Mountain, South Korea. We reviewed home range-related literature on sika deer published between 1982 and 2019 in order to assess their estimation methods, study region, and research background. We observed that the number of studies on sika deer has increased. The minimum convex polygon (MCP) has been utilized the most to estimate habitat UD, followed by the kernel density (KD), the Brownian bridge model, and a combination of these methods. The average home ranges (95 % utilization distribution) of sika deer from the literature survey were 236.99 ha and 1183.96 ha using the minimum convex polygon and kernel density approaches, respectively. The five female deer in our experimental study on Suncheon Bonghwasan Mountain had a mean home range of 66.831 ± 15.241 ha using the MCP approach and 78.324 ± 20.82 ha using the KD approach. The UD behavior of sika deer explored in this research is expected to benefit future scholars and policymakers when formulating deer management and wildlife conservation strategies.
RESUMO
Oxalis latifolia, a perennial herbaceous weed, is a highly invasive species that poses a threat to agricultural lands worldwide. East Asia is under a high risk of invasion of O. latifolia under global climate change. To evaluate this risk, we employed maximum entropy modeling considering two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5). Currently, a small portion (8.02%) of East Asia is within the O. latifolia distribution, with the highest coverages in Chinese Taipei, China, and Japan (95.09%, 9.8%, and 0.24%, respectively). However, our projections indicated that this invasive weed will likely be introduced to South Korea and North Korea between 2041 and 2060 and 2081 and 2100, respectively. The species is expected to cover approximately 9.79% and 23.68% (SSP2-4.5) and 11.60% and 27.41% (SSP5-8.5) of the total land surface in East Asia by these time points, respectively. South Korea and Japan will be particularly susceptible, with O. latifolia potentially invading up to 80.73% of their territory by 2081-2100. Mongolia is projected to remain unaffected. This study underscores the urgent need for effective management strategies and careful planning to prevent the introduction and limit the expansion of O. latifolia in East Asian countries.
RESUMO
Nutria (Myocastor coypus) are semi-aquatic rodents that were introduced in South Korea for commercial farming but significantly damaged aquatic ecosystems. Understanding nutria ecological behavior is essential for developing effective control and eradication strategies to mitigate their impacts. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the home range and activity patterns of 24 nutria (12 males and 12 females) in the Macdo wetland in South Korea from 2015-2016 through radio tracking. The average minimum convex polygon home range of the nutria was 0.29 ± 0.55 km2, with a 95% kernel density estimation (KDE) home range of 0.43 ± 0.85 km2 and a 50% KDE home range of 0.05 ± 1.1 km2. The home range of males was larger than that of females; however, the winter home range of females was as large as that of males. The home range also varied seasonally, with the smallest observed in winter. The nutria showed crepuscular and nocturnal activity patterns throughout the year, with no significant difference between sexes. The activities in spring, summer, and autumn showed no significant differences, but the activity in winter was significantly different from that in the other seasons. This study may serve as a basis for developing appropriately timed and scaled management strategies to mitigate the impacts of nutria on ecosystems. In conclusion, several environmental and biological factors contribute to the behavior of nutria in South Korea.
RESUMO
Climate change is an inevitable and urgent issue in the current world. African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a re-emerging viral animal disease. This study investigates the quantitative association between climate change and the potential spread of ASFV to a global extent. ASFV in wild boar outbreak locations recorded from 1 January 2019 to 29 July 2022 were sampled and investigated using the ecological distribution tool, the Maxent model, with WorldClim bioclimatic data as the predictor variables. The future impacts of climate change on ASFV distribution based on the model were scoped with Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) scenarios of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) bioclimatic data for 2050 and 2070. The results show that precipitation of the driest month (Bio14) was the highest contributor, and annual mean temperature (Bio1) was obtained as the highest permutation importance variable on the spread of ASFV. Based on the analyzed scenarios, we found that the future climate is favourable for ASFV disease; only quantitative ratios are different and directly associated with climate change. The current study could be a reference material for wildlife health management, climate change issues, and World Health Organization sustainability goal 13: climate action.
RESUMO
The nutria, (Myocastor coypus), is a semiaquatic rodent native to the subtropical and temperate regions of South America. The species was introduced to South Korea for meat and fur production purposes and a wild population has become established. The species subsequently invaded aquatic ecosystems and destroyed aquatic vegetation and cultivated crops. Thus, it is essential to understand their current distribution and future range expansion for effective control and eradication strategies to reduce the risk of colonization into new regions. In this study, we used niche modeling procedure to identify potentially suitable habitats for M. coypus under current and future predicted climate change using the maximum entropy algorithm. We found that the main habitat area of M. coypus is expected to expand under a warming climate from ~ 4069 km2 in the southern and southeastern regions of South Korea, to the northern border of the country, with estimated ranges of 21,744 km2, 55,859 km2, and 64,937 km2 by 2030, 2050, and 2070, respectively. The findings of the present study assist in identifying the future distribution and potential dispersion routes of M. coypus in South Korea, which is important for informing the government regarding essential management actions plans at regional and local scales.

Predicting the distribution of invasive weeds under climate change is important for the early identification of areas that are susceptible to invasion and for the adoption of the best preventive measures. Here, we predicted the habitat suitability of 16 invasive weeds in response to climate change and land cover changes in South Korea using a maximum entropy modeling approach. Based on the predictions of the model, climate change is likely to increase habitat suitability. Currently, the area of moderately suitable and highly suitable habitats is estimated to be 8877.46 km2, and 990.29 km2, respectively, and these areas are expected to increase up to 496.52% by 2050 and 1439.65% by 2070 under the representative concentration pathways 4.5 scenario across the country. Although habitat suitability was estimated to be highest in the southern regions (<36° latitude), the central and northern regions are also predicted to have substantial increases in suitable habitat areas. Our study revealed that climate change would exacerbate the threat of northward weed invasions by shifting the climatic barriers of invasive weeds from the southern region. Thus, it is essential to initiate control and management strategies in the southern region to prevent further invasions into new areas.
RESUMO
Nutrias (Myocastor coypus) were imported to South Korea for farming in 1985; individuals escaped captivity and established wild populations in natural ecosystems in the late 1990s. Numerous studies have focused on their monitoring and management; however, information on the continuous movement of individuals is not available. In this study, telemetry data from field conditions were used to identify the nearest-neighbor distances of individuals in association with environmental factors, including plant type, land cover, and biological parameters. The minimum nearest-neighbor distances for the different sexes were, overall, according to the minimum distances for the same sex. Local co-occurrences of individuals, either of the same or different sex, were seasonal. Tall grasslands, followed by herbaceous vegetation, were associated with the co-occurrence of different sexes. Conversely, floating-leaved hydrophytes, followed by xeric herbaceous vegetation, were correlated with the co-occurrence of the same sex. Local female-male co-occurrences were negatively associated with male-male co-occurrences but not with female-female co-occurrences, suggesting male dominance in group formations. Movement and co-occurrence information extracted using Geo-self-organizing maps furthers our understanding of population dispersal and helps formulate management strategies for nutria populations.
RESUMO
RATIONALE: Neurofibromas can develop as part of neurofibromatosis or as a solitary tumor. Although solitary neurofibromas generally grow slowly, they rarely grow for more than 10 years, and such tumors have not been described in the hand. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old woman presented with a mass on the dorsum of the proximal phalanx of the right thumb that had been enlarging since more than a decade. DIAGNOSES: Preoperative imaging revealed a moderately defined soft tissue mass, which measured 1.5âcmâ×â1.5âcmâ×â0.7âcm, with no bone and joint abnormalities on the right thumb. The final diagnosis of the tumor was solitary neurofibroma without evidence of neurofibromatosis. INTERVENTION: En bloc resection of the tumor was performed through a longitudinal skin incision. OUTCOMES: After surgery, the patient had no complaints of pain but had a temporary tingling sensation. After 14 months of follow-up, no signs of recurrence of the tumor were observed and she was highly satisfied with the results of the surgery. LESSONS: Solitary neurofibroma is quite rare, especially one in the hand. However, in dealing with soft tissue tumors of the hand, particularly those with neurologic symptoms, neurofibroma should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Vitamin B12 (B12), also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is a cofactor in DNA synthesis and is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, including the central nervous system. Those with a deficiency of B12 can present with peripheral neuropathy, pernicious anemia, or a cognitive disorder. Previous studies have revealed that a deficiency of B12 is associated with cognitive decline or Alzheimer disease. The data of 2991 people were evaluated from 2 years of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study, a nationwide multicenter survey. To assess cognitive function, a short form of the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K) was used. Of the CERAD-K tests, we included the Mini-Mental State Examination in the Korean version of the CERAD assessment packet (MMSE-KC), the word list: memory/recall/recognition, digit span (forward, backward), trail making test-A, and the frontal assessment battery. B12 concentrations were classified into clinically relevant categories, insufficient (<350âpg/mL) and sufficient (≥350âpg/mL). A linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between cognitive function and B12 levels. The mean age of the 2991 participants was 76.4â±â3.9 years old. Overall, 414 (13.8%) were classified as B12 insufficient, and 2577 (86.2%) as B12 sufficient. The sufficient B12 group performed better in the MMSE-KC, Wordlist: memory, Wordlist: recognition, TMT-A test, digit span, and FAB tests. This was statistically significant (Pâ<â.05). However, in the multivariable linear regression analysis, after adjusting for age, sex, education period, marriage, smoking and drinking habits, and comorbidities, the association between the B12 group and cognitive function was not statistically significant.Although our study does not show that B12 insufficiency is a direct risk factor to cognitive decline, B12 levels could be a contributing factor to cognitive function. Our results suggest that cognition was affected by the B12 levels, along with demographic and sociological variables.

It is well known that vitamin D (VitD) plays an important role in bone and calcium metabolism in the human body. VitD has additional roles in the body including modulation of cell growth, neurogenesis, neuroprotection, detoxification, immune function, and reduction of inflammation. Recent studies reveal insufficiency of VitD as a risk factor for cognitive decline or dementia. VitD has a role in normal brain function; insufficiency of VitD may lead to decreased memory and cognitive function.Using 2 years of baseline data from Korean frailty and aging cohort study, 2990 subjects (1415 men and 1575 women) were recruited. A short form of Korean version of the consortium to establish a registry for Alzheimer disease (CERAD-K), an assessment of cognitive status in patients with dementia was used. Among CERAD-K tests, we included word list memory/recall/recognition, digit span (forward, backward), trail making test (TMT) A, and mini-mental state examination in the Korean version of the CERAD assessment packet (MMSE-KC). Serum samples were collected and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were classified into clinically relevant categories as: deficient (<10ânmol/L), insufficient (10-30ânmol/L), and sufficient (≥30ânmol/L).The mean age of participants was 76.5â±â3.9 years, and 52.7% were women. Among 2990 participants, 119 (4.0%) were classified as 25(OH)D deficient and 2253 (75.3%) as insufficient. Only 618 (20.7%) participants were sufficient for 25(OH)D. Among them performance in MMSE-KC, TMT A, and digit span tests was better in sufficient, insufficient, and deficient groups, which was statistically significant (Pâ<â.05). However, in multivariable regression analysis after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, education, center, seasonality, physical activity, and alcohol use, association between 25(OH)D and cognitive function was not statistically significant.Although, when comparing VitD levels, there were differences in cognitive tests among the groups, fully adjusted analysis did not show any association. This result suggests that cognition was not affected by VitD levels alone but also population and sociological variables. In a fully adjusted model, there was no statistically significant association between VitD and cognitive function in the elderly Koreans in logistic regression analysis.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in Korea was sequenced for the first time using the next-generation sequencing method to understand its evolutionary relationship and to be helpful to establish a management plan. This mitogenome was 16,350 base pairs in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and one control region. Its overall A, C, G, and T contents were 32.0%, 26.9%, 12.6%, and 28.5%, respectively. A + T content (63.7%) was higher than G + C content (36.3%). We made the phylogenetic tree of muskrat and other 12 species of order Rodentia distributed in Korea.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Dysphagia and dysarthria tend to coexist in stroke patients. Dysphagia can reduce patients' quality of life, cause aspiration pneumonia and increased mortality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate correlations among swallowing function parameters and acoustic vowel space values in patients with stroke. METHODS: Data from stroke patients with dysarthria and dysphagia were collected. The formant parameter representing the resonance frequency of the vocal tract as a two-dimensional coordinate point was measured for the /a/, /ae/, /i/, and /u/vowels, and the quadrilateral vowel space area (VSA) and formant centralization ratio (FCR) were measured. Swallowing function was evaluated by a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) using the videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale (VDS) and penetration aspiration scale (PAS). Pearson's correlation and linear regression analyses were used to assess the correlation of VSA and FCR to VDS and PAS scores. RESULTS: Thirty-one stroke patients with dysphagia and dysarthria were analyzed. VSA showed a negative correlation to VDS and PAS scores, while FCR showed a positive correlation to VDS score, but not to PAS score. VSA and FCR were significant factors for assessing dysphagia severity. CONCLUSIONS: VSA and FCR values were correlated with swallowing function and may be helpful in predicting dysphagia severity associated with stroke.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is an invasive alien species that have had major adverse effects on biodiversity and the agricultural economy in wetland habitats. Since 2014, the Ministry of Environment in South Korea has been carrying out the Nutria Eradication Project, and we investigated nutria distribution and genetic diversity of nutria populations in South Korea. We estimated that 99.2% of nutria habitats are in the mid-lower Nakdong River regions. To further analyze the genetic diversity in eight major nutria populations, we performed a genetic analysis using microsatellite markers. Genetic diversity levels of the eight nutria populations in South Korea were relatively lower than those in other countries. The probability of migration direction among nutria populations was predicted from genetic distance analysis. Genetic structure analysis showed little difference among the nutria populations in South Korea. These results suggest that nutrias in South Korea originated from a single population. Our results provide important data for establishing management strategies for the successful eradication of nutria populations in South Korea, as well as in other countries with alien invasive species.
RESUMO
The emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant Aeromonas spp. is a serious public and animal health concern. Wild animals serve as reservoirs, vectors, and sentinels of these bacteria and can facilitate their transmission to humans and livestock. The nutria (Myocastor coypus), a semi-aquatic rodent, currently is globally considered an invasive alien species that has harmful impacts on natural ecosystems and carries various zoonotic aquatic pathogens. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant zoonotic Aeromonas spp. in wild invasive nutrias captured in Korea during governmental eradication program. Three potential zoonotic Aeromonas spp. (A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. dhakensis) were identified among isolates from nutria. Some strains showed unexpected resistance to fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins, and carbapenems. In carbapenem-resistant isolates, the cphA gene, which is related to intrinsic resistance of Aeromonas to carbapenems, was identified, and phylogenetic analysis based on this gene revealed the presence of two major groups represented by A. hydrophila (including A. dhakensis) and other Aeromonas spp. These results indicate that wild nutrias in Korea are a potential reservoir of zoonotic and antibiotic-resistant Aeromonas spp. that can cause infection and treatment failure in humans. Thus, measures to prevent contact of wild nutrias with livestock and humans are needed.
RESUMO
We report here the complete genome sequence of Aeromonas rivipollensis KN-Mc-11N1, which was isolated from a wild nutria (Myocastor coypus) in South Korea. Genomic analysis indicated that A. rivipollensis may have zoonotic potential similar to that of other aeromonads, and nutria could be one of the sources of transmission of zoonotic pathogens to humans.
RESUMO
The glial scar is comprised of a heterogeneous population of reactive astrocytes. NG2 glial cells (also known as oligodendrocyte progenitor cells or polydendrocytes) may contribute to this heterogeneity by differentiating into astrocytes in the injured CNS, but there have been conflicting reports about whether astrocytes comprise a significant portion of the NG2 cell lineage. By using genetic fate mapping after spinal cord injury (SCI) and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice, the goal of this study was to confirm and extend upon previous findings, which have shown that NG2 cell plasticity varies across CNS injuries. We generated mice that express tdTomato in NG2 lineage cells and express GFP under the Aldh1l1 or Glt1 promoter so that NG2 glia-derived astrocytes can be detected by their expression of GFAP and/or GFP. We found that astrocytes comprise approximately 25% of the total NG2 cell lineage in the glial scar by 4â¯weeks after mid-thoracic contusive SCI, but only 9% by the peak of functional deficit after EAE. Interestingly, a subpopulation of astrocytes expressed only GFP without co-expression of GFAP, uncovering their heterogeneity and the possibility of an underestimation of NG2 glia-derived astrocytes in previous studies. Additionally, we used high performance liquid chromatography to measure the level of tamoxifen and its metabolites in the spinal cord and show that genetic labeling of NG2 glia-derived astrocytes is not an artifact of residual tamoxifen. Overall, our data demonstrate that a heterogeneous population of astrocytes are derived from NG2 glia in an injury type-dependent manner.

Meningiomas originate in the central nervous system and are the most common intracranial benign tumor. However, although rarely, they can develop extracranially. Primary extracranial meningiomas are frequently misdiagnosed, resulting in inappropriate clinical management. The most common sites of extracranial meningiomas include the skull, scalp, orbit, nose, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, neck, and skin. A 77-year-old woman presented with a mass on her left eyebrow. Computed tomography revealed an enhancing soft tissue mass in the left frontal area. The differential diagnoses included benign and malignant tumors. The patient underwent surgical excision by a direct approach, with dissection through the galea plane. Histological examination showed tumor cells arranged in sheets or whorls, with occasional psammoma bodies. The margins were free of tumor. The mass measured 2.1â×â1.1â×â2âcm, and was diagnosed as an extracranial meningioma. The patient had no recurrence 1 year later. Extracranial meningiomas are rare; nonetheless, ectopic meningioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any mass lesion in the eyebrow region.
