RESUMO

Self-powered electrical bandages (SEBs), integrated with wearable energy harvesters, can provide an effective and autonomous electrical stimulation (ES) solution for rapid and scarless wound healing. A continuously operating, wireless, and applicable-to-comprehensive-wound ES device is essential for the quick restoration of wounds and convenience. This work illustrates a SEB powered by body-coupled energy harvesting. The SEB continuously treats the wound with 60-Hz sinusoidal electrical potential gained from the coupling of the human body and ambient electrical waves. It is demonstrated that enough level of electrical potential can be applied to the wound, further enhanced by strong capacitive coupling arising from the use of high-permittivity poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene):CaCu3Ti4O12 (P(VDF-TrFE):CCTO) nanocomposite. The potential clinical efficacy of the SEB is illustrated by preclinical analysis of human fibroblasts and mouse wound model, thus confirming the successful expedition of wound recovery. This work suggests a new class of wearable devices to provide ES events and its potential for extension to other conventional wound care materials and device technology.

RESUMO

Wireless energy transfer (WET) based on ultrasound-driven generators with enormous beneficial functions, is technologically in progress by the valuation of ultrasonic metamaterials (UMMs) in science and engineering domains. Indeed, novel metamaterial structures can develop the efficiency of mechanical and physical features of ultrasound energy receivers (US-ETs), including ultrasound-driven piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (US-PENGs and US-TENGs) for advantageous applications. This review article first summarizes the fundamentals, classification, and design engineering of UMMs after introducing ultrasound energy for WET technology. In addition to addressing using UMMs, the topical progress of innovative UMMs in US-ETs is conceptually presented. Moreover, the advanced approaches of metamaterials are reported in the categorized applications of US-PENGs and US-TENGs. Finally, some current perspectives and encounters of UMMs in US-ETs are offered. With this objective in mind, this review explores the potential revolution of reliable integrated energy transfer systems through the transformation of metamaterials into ultrasound-driven active mediums for generators.

Complex temporal bone anatomy complicates operations; thus, surgeons must engage in practice to mitigate risks, improving patient safety and outcomes. However, existing training methods often involve prohibitive costs and ethical problems. Therefore, we developed an educational mastoidectomy simulator, considering mechanical properties using 3D printing. The mastoidectomy simulator was modeled on computed tomography images of a patient undergoing a mastoidectomy. Infill was modeled for each anatomical part to provide a realistic drilling sensation. Bone and other anatomies appear in assorted colors to enhance the simulator's educational utility. The mechanical properties of the simulator were evaluated by measuring the screw insertion torque for infill specimens and cadaveric temporal bones and investigating its usability with a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire completed by five otolaryngologists. The maximum insertion torque values of the sigmoid sinus, tegmen, and semicircular canal were 1.08 ± 0.62, 0.44 ± 0.42, and 1.54 ± 0.43 N mm, displaying similar-strength infill specimens of 40%, 30%, and 50%. Otolaryngologists evaluated the quality and usability at 4.25 ± 0.81 and 4.53 ± 0.62. The mastoidectomy simulator could provide realistic bone drilling feedback for educational mastoidectomy training while reinforcing skills and comprehension of anatomical structures.

This study aimed to estimate A-STR mutation rates in 2,317 Korean parent-child trios by examining 20 Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) core loci (D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, CSF1PO, FGA, TH01, TPOX, vWA, D1S1656, D2S441, D2S1338, D10S1248, D12S391, D19S433, and D22S1045) and three non-CODIS loci (Penta E, Penta D, and SE33). Locus-specific mutation rate estimates varied from 0.00 to 8.63 × 10-3 per generation, with an average mutation rate of 1.62 × 10-3 (95 % CI, 1.39-1.88 × 10-3). We also combined data from previous studies to obtain comprehensive genetic values for the Korean population, and the average mutation rate was 1.59 × 10-3 (95 % CI, 1.38-1.82 × 10-3). Single-step mutations (95.69 %) and double-step mutations (3.35 %) were observed in the mutation pattern analysis, and cases expected to have multi-step mutations (0.96 %) were also observed. Large-sized alleles exhibited more loss mutations than gain mutations, and paternal mutations (62.68 %) were more frequently observed than maternal mutations (19.62 %). The calculated values and features of the 23 A-STRs explored in this study are expected to play a crucial role in establishing criteria for forensic genetic interpretation.

A 65-year-old with a history of spinal cord injury and previous cervical surgery presented with persistent fever despite antibiotic treatment. MRI scans revealed an abscess in the neck extending from C3 to C6, with associated osteomyelitis. After an initial discharge following antibiotic therapy, the patient was readmitted due to recurrent systemic infection symptoms and another abscess. A subsequent endoscopy showed esophageal rupture with protruding cervical fusion metal. Due to operative risks, a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy was performed without further infection recurrence. The absence of typical imaging signs of esophageal rupture made diagnosis difficult. The infection spread through the cervical fascia from superficial to deep cervical areas. Esophageal rupture, a rare complication of cervical surgery, presents with varying symptoms depending on its location and was particularly challenging to diagnose in this patient due to high cervical tetraplegia, which masked typical pain responses. Therefore, this case highlights the need to consider esophageal rupture in differential diagnoses for chronic ACDF patients, even when typical symptoms are absent.

Methotrexate (MTX) is commonly used in intrathecal chemotherapy for patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) to prevent central nervous system (CNS) involvement. However, the use of MTX-based chemotherapy can lead to rare yet severe complications, such as MTX-induced myelopathy. Here, we report the case of MTX-induced myelopathy initially misdiagnosed as Guillain-Barre syndrome, leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. We present a case of a 39-year-old male with a history of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) who experienced bilateral foot paresthesia and progressive lower extremity weakness after intrathecal methotrexate (MTX) treatment. Initially, the patient was suspected as having Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) due to similar clinical features and nerve conduction studies. The patient received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment, but his condition worsened. T2-weighted images of the thoracic spinal cord revealed high signal intensity in both lateral and posterior columns, typically associated with subacute combined degeneration. However, elevated vitamin B12 levels ruled out SCD in this case. Based on the aforementioned findings, intrathecal methotrexate-induced myelopathy was diagnosed. This case highlights the diagnostic challenge posed by the similarity in clinical presentation between MTX-induced myelopathy and GBS. Differentiating between these conditions is critical for appropriate management. Prompt recognition and treatment with folate metabolism compounds may mitigate neurological sequelae.

Aging is associated with muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration of skeletal muscle. The multifidus muscle stabilizes the lumbar spine and undergoes adipose accumulation with age, leading to functional decline in the elderly. Therefore, quantitative assessment of the multifidus muscle can be beneficial for the elderly when formulating treatment strategies and reducing future complications. Fifty-seven patients (mean age, 73.89 ± 6.09; 23 male patients) who underwent lumbar Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were prospectively recruited. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the multifidus from the L2-S1 level and the CSA of the L4-5 level psoas muscle were measured. The functional CSA (fCSA) of the multifidus muscle was measured by excluding the fat infiltration area from the multifidus CSA. The CSA to fCSA ratio was obtained by multiplying 100 by the value obtained by dividing CSA by the fCSA. Pfrrmann classification was used to evaluate the degree of disc degeneration. The functional disability measurements were the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), grip strength, and functional reach test (FRT). Pearson's correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between the functional disability measurements and the multifidus muscle. The CSA to fCSA ratio value was relatively constant at each spine level and showed a significant correlation with the SPPB, grip strength, FRT, and psoas index (p < 0.05). However, degree of disc and multifidus muscle degeneration was not statistically significant. So, age-related changes play a significant role in developing back muscle fatty infiltration than disc degeneration. Moreover, Grip strength showed a stronger relationship with the quality of the multifidus muscle than other functional disability measurements.

A cobalt phthalocyanine having an electron-poor CoN4 (+δ) in its phthalocyanine moiety was presented as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction (HPOR). We suggested that hydrogen peroxide as an electrolysis medium for hydrogen production and therefore as a hydrogen carrier, demonstrating that the electrocatalyst guaranteed high hydrogen production rate by hydrogen peroxide splitting. The electron deficiency of cobalt allows CoN4 to have the highly HPOR-active monovalent oxidation state and facilitates HPOR at small overpotentials range around the onset potential. The strong interaction between the electron-deficient cobalt and oxygen of peroxide adsorbates in Co─OOH- encourages an axially coordinated cobalt oxo complex (O═CoN4 ) to form, the O═CoN4 facilitating the HPOR efficiently at high overpotentials. Low-voltage oxygen evolution reaction guaranteeing low-voltage hydrogen production is successfully demonstrated in the presence of the metal-oxo complex having electron-deficient CoN4 . Hydrogen production by 391 mA cm-2 at 1 V and 870 mA cm-2 at 1.5 V is obtained. Also, the techno-economic benefit of hydrogen peroxide as a hydrogen carrier is evaluated by comparing hydrogen peroxide with other hydrogen carriers such as ammonia and liquid organic hydrogen carriers.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral compression fractures decrease daily life activities and increase economic and social burdens. Aging decreases bone mineral density (BMD), which increases the incidence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). However, factors other than BMD can affect OVCFs. Sarcopenia has been a noticeable factor in the aging health problem. Sarcopenia, which involves a decrease in the quality of the back muscles, influences OVCFs. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of the quality of the multifidus muscle on OVCFs. METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients aged 60 years and older who underwent concomitant lumbar MRI and BMD in the university hospital database, with no history of structurally affecting the lumbar spine. We first divided the recruited people into a control group and a fracture group according to the presence or absence of OVCFs, and further divided the fracture group into an osteoporosis BMD group and an osteopenia BMD group based on the BMD T-score of -2.5. Using images of lumbar spine MRI, the cross-sectional area and percentage of muscle fiber (PMF) of the multifidus muscle were obtained. RESULTS: We included 120 patients who had visited the university hospital, with 45 participants in the control group and 75 in the fracture group (osteopenia BMD: 41, osteoporosis BMD: 34). Age, BMD, and the psoas index significantly differed between the control and fracture groups. The mean cross-sectional area (CSA) of multifidus muscles measured at L4-5 and L5-S1, respectively, did not differ among the control, P-BMD, and O-BMD groups. On the other hand, the PMF measured at L4-5 and L5-S1 showed a significant difference among the three groups, and the value of the fracture group was lower than that of the control group. Logistic regression analysis showed that the PMF value, not the CSA, of the multifidus muscle at L4-5 and L5-S1 affected the risk of OVCFs, with and without adjusting for other significant factors. CONCLUSIONS: High percentage of fatty infiltration of the multifidus muscle increases the spinal fracture risk. Therefore, preserving the quality of the spinal muscle and bone density is essential for preventing OVCFs.

Polymer-based nanocomposites are desirable materials for next-generation dielectric capacitors. 2D dielectric nanosheets have received significant attention as a filler. However, randomly spreading the 2D filler causes residual stresses and agglomerated defect sites in the polymer matrix, which leads to the growth of an electric tree, resulting in a more premature breakdown than expected. Therefore, realizing a well-aligned 2D nanosheet layer with a small amount is a key challenge; it can inhibit the growth of conduction paths without degrading the performance of the material. Here, an ultrathin Sr1.8 Bi0.2 Nb3 O10 (SBNO) nanosheet filler is added as a layer into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films via the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The structural properties, breakdown strength, and energy storage capacity of a PVDF and multilayer PVDF/SBNO/PVDF composites as a function of the thickness-controlled SBNO layer are examined. The seven-layered (only 14 nm) SBNO nanosheets thin film can sufficiently prevent the electrical path in the PVDF/SBNO/PVDF composite and shows a high energy density of 12.8 J cm-3 at 508 MV m-1 , which is significantly higher than that of the bare PVDF film (9.2 J cm-3 at 439 MV m-1 ). At present, this composite has the highest energy density among the polymer-based nanocomposites under the filler of thin thickness.

Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) have been widely used in forensic genetics, and accurate knowledge of mutation rates at Y-STR loci is essential in kinship analysis. The main aim of this study was to estimate Y-STR mutation rates in Korean males. To obtain locus-specific mutations and haplotypes at 23 Y-STRs, we analyzed samples from 620 Korean father-son pairs. In addition, we also analyzed 476 unrelated individuals using the PowerPlex® Y23 System, with the aim of augmenting the available data for the Korean population. The PowerPlex® Y23 system facilitates analysis of the 23 Y-STR loci (DYS576, DYS570, DYS458, DYS635, DYS389 II, DYS549, DYS385, DYS481, DYS439, DYS456, DYS389 I, DYS19, DYS393, DYS391, DYS533, DYS437, DYS390, Y GATA H4, DYS448, DYS438, DYS392, and DYS643). Locus-specific mutation rate estimates varied from 0.00 to 8.06 × 10-3 per generation, with an average mutation rate of 2.17 × 10-3 (95% CI, 1.5-3.1 × 10-3). To obtain comprehensive genetic values for the Korean population, we combined data obtained in this study with previously reported values, thereby enabling us to estimate the locus-specific mutation rates regarding 22,711 allele transmissions. By combining these data, we obtained an overall average mutation rate of 2.91 × 10-3 (95% CI, 2.3-3.7 × 10-3). In addition, among the 476 unrelated Korean males, we detected 467 different haplotypes, with an overall haplotype diversity value of 0.9999. By extracting haplotypes of Y-STRs described in previous literature on 23 Y-STR reported in Korea, we obtained gene diversities for 1133 Korean individuals. We believe that the values and characteristics of the 23 Y-STRs analyzed in this study will contribute to establishing criteria for forensic genetic interpretation, including kinship analysis.

An innovative autonomous resonance-tuning (ART) energy harvester is reported that utilizes adaptive clamping systems driven by intrinsic mechanical mechanisms without outsourcing additional energy. The adaptive clamping system modulates the natural frequency of the harvester's main beam (MB) by adjusting the clamping position of the MB. The pulling force induced by the resonance vibration of the tuning beam (TB) provides the driving force for operating the adaptive clamp. The ART mechanism is possible by matching the natural frequencies of the TB and clamped MB. Detailed evaluations are conducted on the optimization of the adaptive clamp tolerance and TB design to increase the pulling force. The energy harvester exhibits an ultrawide resonance bandwidth of over 30 Hz in the commonly accessible low vibration frequency range (<100 Hz) owing to the ART function. The practical feasibility is demonstrated by evaluating the ART performance under both frequency and acceleration-variant conditions and powering a location tracking sensor.

Here, we present a case of a 53-year-old female patient with chronic neck pain and systemic inflammation who was ultimately diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. Notably, applying fat-suppressed T2-weighted MRI sequences was pivotal in detecting structural fascial changes commonly associated with systemic inflammatory diseases. PET-CT scans further revealed systemic inflammation around multiple joints, providing valuable insights into MRI signal alterations. This case underscores the importance of considering systemic autoimmune pathology as a potential underlying cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain. It also highlights the clinical utility of MRI with fat suppression sequences in identifying inflammation-related fascial changes. This case emphasizes the significance of a comprehensive evaluation, particularly in situations where clinical features overlap between autoimmune and degenerative skeletal pathologies. Fat-suppressed MRI can provide information about fascial pathology related to systemic inflammatory diseases. In this context, it is worth noting that PET-CT and fat suppression MRI complement each other by providing complementary information about inflammation and the underlying causes of a patient's pain.

Lymphedema causes inflammation, which provokes fibrosis within the epifascial tissue. Temporal change in fibrosis according to severity of the lymphedema has not been widely investigated. We aimed to study the quantitative changes in epifascial fibrosis during lymphedema treatment using computed tomography (CT). Forty-five patients (mean age: 57.75 ± 11.12 years) who developed lymphedema following gynecologic surgery were included in this retrospective study. Two weeks of complete decongestive therapy and continued self-bandaging or compression garments were prescribed under regular follow-up monitoring. Lower-extremity epifascial fibrosis was quantitatively analyzed on the initial and follow-up CT scans. Circumference, skin fibrosis, subcutaneous tissue, and fibrosis ratio were calculated in the axial scan. Based on the change in lymphedema severity, we divided subjects into 'improved' and 'aggravated' groups. The affected lower extremities showed higher circumference, more skin fibrosis and subcutaneous tissue, and higher fibrosis ratio than the unaffected sides on initial CT scan. At follow-up, compared to the aggravated group, the improved group showed significant decreases in fibrosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue and fibrosis ratio. Subcutaneous fibrosis was reversible with volume resolution of lymphedema. Therapeutic approaches should be established on the basis of the reversible nature of fibrotic changes in patients with lower extremity lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Intraarticular (IA) corticosteroid injection is commonly performed in patients with primary frozen shoulder (PFS). However, the best administration site remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of rotator interval (RI) vs posterior capsule (PC) approach for ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections into the glenohumeral joint of patients with PFS. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized, exploratory, prospective study. SETTING: A single fellowship training institution in Daegu, Republic of Korea. METHODS: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (2019-04-047-001).  Ninety patients with PFS were randomly assigned to either RI approach (RI group, n = 43) or PC approach (PC group, n = 45) for ultrasound-guided IA corticosteroid injection. Fluoroscopic images to assess the accuracy of the injection were obtained immediately after injection by a shoulder specialist. Visual Analog Scale for pain, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, the subjective shoulder value, and range of motion (ROM) were used to assess clinical outcomes for all patients at the time of presentation, and at 3, 6, and 12 weeks after injection. RESULTS: The accuracy of injection was 76.7% (33/43) and 93.3% (42/45) in the RI and PC groups, respectively; the between-group difference was statistically significant (P = .028). Significant improvements were observed in both groups in terms of all clinical scores and ROMs throughout follow-up until 12 weeks after the injection (all P < .001). At 12 weeks, better improvements in forward flexion and abduction (P = .049 and .044) were observed in the RI group than in the PC group. No adverse effect related to injection was observed in either group. LIMITATIONS: This study had no control group receiving placebo injections and limited follow-up time. CONCLUSIONS: Both groups showed significant pain reduction and functional improvement until 12 weeks after injection. Although no significant differences were observed in pain and functional scores between the 2 groups, the RI group showed better improvement of ROM than the PC group. These results indicate that the RI and anterior structures are a major site in the pathogenesis and treatment target of PFS.

Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience a high osteoporosis incidence, which increases fracture risk. Recently, a sclerostin antibody was introduced as a target biomarker to treat osteoporosis. We aimed to determine the serum concentration of sclerostin and factors affecting its concentration over time. This was a prospective cross-sectional study. The inclusion criteria were (1) SCI patients with a grade 3 modified functional ambulatory category score (FAC­patients requiring firm continuous support) and (2) patients whose injury occurred >1 month ago. The exclusion criterion was a history of osteoporosis medication administration within 6 months. The collected data included bone biomarkers (carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), procollagen type 1 intact N-terminal propeptide, and sclerostin), clinical data (FAC, lower extremity motor score), body mass index, SCI duration, and hip bone mineral density (BMD). This study recruited 62 patients with SCI. Sclerostin levels significantly correlated with age, CTX level, and hip BMD. SCI duration was negatively correlated with sclerostin levels. Lower extremity motor scores were not significantly correlated with sclerostin levels. The acute SCI state showed a higher sclerostin level than the chronic SCI state. Sclerostin showed a significant relationship with CTX. In conclusion, age and BMD affect sclerostin concentration in patients with SCI.

Background: Lymphedema causes skin and subcutaneous fibrosis. However, quantitative methods for estimating the severity of fibrosis due to lymphedema have not been established. We evaluated skin stiffness using shear-wave elastography (SWE) and aimed to identify stiffness-associated factors in patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Methods and Results: Thirty-six women (mean age, 57.5 ± 1.78 years; range, 39-77 years) were retrospectively recruited for this study. The mid-arm and mid-forearm circumferences were measured. The percentage differences in arm and forearm circumferences were used as an indicator of the severity of lymphedema at the time of SWE measurement and the measurement taken when the symptoms were most severe. Not subcutaneous tissues but cutaneous tissues of the affected arm and forearm showed a significant increase in shear-wave velocity (SWV) compared with those of the unaffected side. However, SWV was not correlated with the severity of lymphedema as a percentage difference when symptoms were most severe. Body mass index and lymphedema duration showed no significant correlation with the SWV of cutaneous tissues on the affected upper extremities. Conclusions: SWE can adequately estimate cutaneous fibrosis between the affected and unaffected limbs in patients with BCRL. However, evaluation of subcutaneous fibrosis is limited. Therefore, SWE can be an effective tool for evaluating cutaneous fibrosis in patients with BCRL.

Background: Lymphedema produces protein-rich fluids that aggravate inflammation in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Inflammation then induces fibroadipose tissue deposition and fibrosis. However, few methods have been developed to evaluate the severity of fibrosis. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the subcutaneous fibrotic changes in lower extremity lymphedema following gynecologic cancer surgery using an image analysis tool, the FIJI software. Methods and Results: Seventy-four patients with lymphedema following gynecologic surgery were enrolled in this study. We quantitatively analyzed the cross-sectional area (CSA) of soft tissue compartments, including subcutaneous tissue with the skin, muscle volume, fibrotic changes in subcutaneous tissue, and the perimeter of skin boundaries. The limb circumference and the CSA of the subcutaneous tissue and skin on the affected side were significantly larger than those on the unaffected side. Fibrotic changes showed the same trend. However, muscle volume patterns were different from those of the other compartments. Some patients showed lower muscle volume on the unaffected side than on the affected side. Circumference and cellulitis significantly affected the extent of fibrotic changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Age and duration of lymphedema did not affect fibrosis. Conclusion: Fibrosis of subcutaneous regions with the skin can be quantitatively calculated using an image analysis tool in lower extremity lymphedema following gynecologic cancer surgery. Edema and cellulitis increase fibrotic changes in the subcutaneous tissue with the skin.

In the general population, serial imaging is recommended over anticoagulant therapy for below-knee deep vein thrombosis (BKDVT). However, no clinical trial in Asian patients with spinal cord injury and BKDVT has been performed. Therefore, we evaluated the natural course of BKDVT in patients with acute spinal cord injury. We retrospectively analyzed inpatients with spinal cord injury with BKDVT between 2016 and 2020. All patients underwent inpatient rehabilitation treatment and duplex ultrasonographic examination of both the lower extremities at follow-up. After screening 172 patients with acute spinal cord injury for deep vein thrombosis using duplex ultrasound, 27 patients with below-the-knee deep vein thrombosis were included in this study. The mean lower-extremity motor score (median, interquartile range) was 66.0, 54.0-74.5. Sixteen patients received a non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC) for anticoagulation. None of the patients had proximal propagation according to the follow-up duplex ultrasonography. BKDVT disappearance was not significantly different between the NOAC treatment and non-treatment groups. Asian patients with spinal cord injury have a low incidence of venous thromboembolism and favorable natural history of BKDVT. We recommend serial imaging over anticoagulant therapy for BKDVT in these patients.

ABSTRACT: Although the incidence is lower in men than women, osteoporosis remains a significant health issue in men as it may give rise to severe complications if not managed appropriately. As men and women show different biological and social backgrounds, we retrospectively evaluated the differences in the bone metabolism between men and women using bone biomarkers.Bone mineral density (BMD) was determined in all patients using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and analyzing various bone biomarkers such as carboxyl-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), osteocalcin (OCT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The CTX/OCT ratio was used to estimate the association between bone absorption and formation.OCT, CTX, and ALP levels were elevated in patients with osteoporosis. Women displayed a higher incidence of osteoporosis and greater reduction in BMD than men. The mean OCT level in men was lower than that in women. Moreover, men showed significantly lower OCT levels than women of aged 65 and under 80 years old. Among patients with osteoporosis, men had a higher ratio of bone markers than women.Levels of biomarkers of bone formation and absorption were increased in the osteoporosis group. However, men showed lower increases in bone formation biomarkers than did women, indicating that the rate of bone formation relative to bone absorption did not increase in men compared with that in women. Therefore, we suggest that men and women have different bone metabolism in old age.
