RESUMO

As environmental issues have become the dominant agenda worldwide, the necessity for more environmentally friendly electronics has recently emerged. Accordingly, biodegradable or nature-derived materials for green electronics have attracted increased interest. Initially, metal-green hybrid electronics are extensively studied. Although these materials are partially biodegradable, they have high utility owing to their metallic components. Subsequently, carbon-framed materials (such as graphite, cylindrical carbon nanomaterials, graphene, graphene oxide, laser-induced graphene) have been investigated. This has led to the adoption of various strategies for carbon-based materials, such as blending them with biodegradable materials. Moreover, various conductive polymers have been developed and researchers have studied their potential use in green electronics. Researchers have attempted to fabricate conductive polymer composites with high biodegradability by shortening the polymer chains. Furthermore, various physical, chemical, and biological sensors that are essential to modern society have been studied using biodegradable compounds. These recent advances in green electronics have paved the way toward their application in real life, providing a brighter future for society.

RESUMO

The recent emergence of highly contagious respiratory disease and the underlying issues of worldwide air pollution jointly heighten the importance of the personal respirator. However, the incongruence between the dynamic environment and nonadaptive respirators imposes physiological and psychological adverse effects, which hinder the public dissemination of respirators. To address this issue, we introduce adaptive respiratory protection based on a dynamic air filter (DAF) driven by machine learning (ML) algorithms. The stretchable elastomer fiber membrane of the DAF affords immediate adjustment of filtration characteristics through active rescaling of the micropores by simple pneumatic control, enabling seamless and constructive transition of filtration characteristics. The resultant DAF-respirator (DAF-R), made possible by ML algorithms, successfully demonstrates real-time predictive adapting maneuvers, enabling personalizable and continuously optimized respiratory protection under changing circumstances.

RESUMO

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a central regulator of chronic inflammatory diseases and plays a major role in the host immune system against tuberculosis (TB). TNF antagonists, infliximab and etanercept are effective in treating chronic inflammatory diseases by inhibiting TNF, but increase the risk of TB as a result of immunosuppression. Previous studies have shown that the risk of TB is greater in patients who received infliximab than in those who received etanercept and several hypotheses on the action mechanisms of the two agents have been presented in order to explain this difference in the risk of TB. As the clinical use of TNF antagonists increase, the incidence rate of TB may increase. Therefore, it is necessary that clinicians considering the use of TNF antagonists pay much attention to the prevention and control of TB and understand the mechanisms of action of the TNF antagonists. This case shows that etanercept treatment can be safely administered during the treatment of TB. In the future, additional studies will be needed to determine the safety of etanercept and the optimal time for the administration of etanercept during the TB treatment.

Post-pregnancy osteoporosis is not a common disease and is hard to diagnosis because their specific situation is post-partum and lactation. It commonly occurs on lumbar spine within a few months after the birth of a patient's first child and it could lead to be fracture after minor trauma. Although its etiology is not clear, it would not be of sufficient magnitude to cause fractures unless the woman already had a substantial decrease in bone mass. Also, it is rare to be combined with ankylosing spondylitis. Ankylosing spondylitis has a higher risk of osteoporosis and vertebral fracture which increased with the duration of disease. We report a case of post-pregnancy osteoporosis with multiple spinal compression fracture in association of ankylosing spondylitis.

PURPOSE: Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Catalase is one of the main defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. To examine the possible relationship between oxidative stress, and gastric and hepatocellular carcinomas, HinfI restriction length polymorphism (RFLP) in the human catalase gene was assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The genotype and allele frequencies in the promoter region of the catalase gene were studied by PCR-RFLP in 108 Korean controls, 80 Korean gastric carcinoma (GC) and 106 Korean hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found in the genotypic distribution and allelic frequencies between the controls and both types of carcinoma patient. CONCLUSION: To address the possible contribution of oxidative stresses to the pathogenesis of gastric and hepatocellular carcinomas, the associations between the catalase gene polymorphism and GC and HCC susceptibilities were studied. As a result, the catalase gene polymorphism was found not to be determinant of GC and HCC susceptibilities. Further studies are required on various other oxidative stress related genes to elucidate the mechanisms of GC and HCC.
