RESUMO

Honey bees provide vital pollination services to agricultural crops and wild plants worldwide. Unfortunately, the misuse and overuse of pesticides in agricultural production have led to an increase in incidents harming honey bees in recent years. Among the commonly utilized bee species in beekeeping are Apis cerana and Apis mellifera, with wild A. cerana populations widely dispersed in forests, contributing substantially to ecosystem balance. Yet, the impact of paraquat, a toxic herbicide, on A. cerana remains largely unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by examining acute exposure endpoints based on mortality represented by median lethal doses (LD50 values) of paraquat, survival rates, and gene expression patterns between the A. cerana and A. mellifera. The findings revealed that A. cerana exhibits greater sensitivity to paraquat compared to A. mellifera. The acute oral LD50 values for A. cerana were 5.85, 1.74, and 1.21 µg/bee at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, whereas the corresponding values for A. mellifera were 104.00, 11.00, and 6.41 µg/bee. Further, the study demonstrated significant upregulation of the detoxification (antioxidative) enzymes SOD1, CAT, and LLDH-X2 in both A. mellifera and A. cerana following exposure to the lethal dose of paraquat. However, SOD2 expression was notably downregulated in both species, indicating potential mitochondrial damage. These findings suggest that while honey bees initiate activate defense mechanisms against oxidative damage, paraquat exposure may still impair mitochondrial function. Paraquat was found to be moderately toxic to A. mellifera but highly toxic to A. cerana, indicating the importance of screening multiple bee species when assessing the risks of chemical exposure. This research provides a rare comparative analysis of chemical stress effects on morbidity and gene expression in two different honey bee species, establishing a foundational framework for risk assessment and the regulation of herbicide risks to pollinating insects.

This study reports the effects of changes in the waveform and frequency of radio frequency (RF) energy on the tissue ablation range. We developed a 70-watt RFA generator that provides sine and square waves and allows frequency control between 10 Hz and 500 kHz. The changes in the ablation range according to the waveform and frequency were observed using the developed generator. In the waveform variation test, the distance between the electrodes and the electrode type were changed for both waveforms with the frequency set to 500 kHz. In the frequency variation test, the waveform and electrode type were changed with the frequency set to 10, 100, and 500 kHz, while the distance between the electrodes was set to 20 mm. A fixed 45 voltage was applied using the bipolar method. RF energy was applied for 90 s in vitro. The temperature was regulated to not exceed 70°C. The ablation range was calculated using ImageJ software. The analysis results showed that the ablation range was larger with the square wave than with the sine wave and at 10 kHz than at 500 kHz. The developed generator can advance research on ablation area and depth in RF ablation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate choroidal features of idiopathic macular hole (IMH) and determine their relationship with surgical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients above stage II unilateral IMH who received pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with the internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling were enrolled for the retrospective observational study. Preoperative choriocapillaris perfusion (CCP), central choroidal thickness (CCT), base/minimum diameters (BD/MD) and height (HH) of MH were analyzed by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). At 1, 3 and 6 months after PPV, CCT, central foveal thickness (CFT) and maximum parafoveal thickness (MPT) of closed MH were measured. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was assessed at every visit. The correlations between preoperative characteristics and surgical outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients were evaluated. All eyes (100%) showed successful MH closure after the primary surgery. Until postoperative 6 months, BCVA continued to improve significantly (p < 0.001), while CFT and CCT progressively thinned (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). On correlation tests, final postoperative BCVA was associated with preoperative BCVA (R = 0.506, p = 0.007) and CCP (R = -0.475, p = 0.012), while final CFT was related with preoperative CCT (R = 0.392, p = 0.043). Multiple regression analysis revealed that preoperative CCP was significantly related with final postoperative BCVA (ß = -0.403, p = 0.049). CONCLUSION: Preoperative CCP and CCT were respectively associated with functional and anatomical prognosis of IMH after PPV.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. Although murine studies have demonstrated that type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) mediate type 2 skin inflammation, their role in skin fibrosis in AD remains unclear. This study investigated whether type 2 ILCs are involved in skin fibrosis using an AD-like murine model. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were treated epicutaneously with Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) for 5 consecutive days per week for 5 weeks to induce skin fibrosis. Mature lymphocyte deficient Rag1-/- mice were also used to investigate the role of type 2 ILCs in skin fibrosis. RESULTS: The clinical score and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were significantly higher in the AD group than in the control group. The AD group also showed significantly increased epidermal and dermal thicknesses and significantly higher numbers of eosinophils, neutrophils, mast cells, and lymphocytes in the lesional skin than the control group. The lesional skin of the AD group showed increased stain of collagen and significantly higher levels of collagen than the control group (10.4 ± 2.2 µg/mg vs. 1.6 ± 0.1 µg/mg, P < 0.05). The AD group showed significantly higher populations of type 2 ILCs in the lesional skin compared to the control group (0.08 ± 0.01% vs. 0.03 ± 0.01%, P < 0.05). These findings were also similar with the AD group of Rag1-/- mice compared to their control group. Depletion of type 2 ILCs with anti-CD90.2 monoclonal antibodies significantly improved clinical symptom score, TEWL, and infiltration of inflammatory cells, and significantly decreased levels of collagen were observed in the AD group of Rag1-/- mice (1.6 ± 0.0 µg/mg vs. 4.5 ± 0.3 µg/mg, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In the Af-induced AD-like murine model, type 2 ILCs were elevated, with increased levels of collagen. Additionally, removal of type 2 ILCs resulted in decreased collagen levels and improved AD-like pathological findings. These findings suggest that type 2 ILCs play a role in the mechanism of skin fibrosis in AD.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged as a global outbreak in 2019, profoundly affecting both human health and the global economy. Various vaccine modalities were developed and commercialized to overcome this challenge, including inactivated vaccines, mRNA vaccines, adenovirus vector-based vaccines, and subunit vaccines. While intramuscular vaccines induce high IgG levels, they often fail to stimulate significant mucosal immunity in the respiratory system. We employed the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vector expressing the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant (rK148/beta-S), and evaluated the efficacy of intranasal vaccination with rK148/beta-S in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice. Intranasal vaccination with a low dose (106.0 EID50) resulted in an 86% survival rate after challenge with the SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant. Administration at a high dose (107.0 EID50) led to a reduction in lung viral load and 100% survival against the SARS-CoV-2 Beta and Delta variants. A high level of the SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific IgA was also induced in vaccinated mice lungs following the SARS-CoV-2 challenge. Our findings suggest that rK148/beta-S holds promise as an intranasal vaccine candidate that effectively induces mucosal immunity against SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have consistently reported a decrease in hospital admissions for respiratory diseases during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the impact of the pandemic on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) admissions remains unknown. METHODS: This study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. IPF was defined based on the International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision (ICD-10) and rare intractable disease (RID) codes. The rate of IPF admissions was calculated by dividing the number of IPF admissions by the prevalence of IPF. The rate of IPF admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) was compared with the mean rate of admissions during the prepandemic period (2017-2019) and presented as the rate ratio (RR). A sensitivity analysis was conducted on patients treated with systemic corticosteroids during IPF admission. RESULTS: In patients with IPF defined based on the ICD-10 (analysis 1), the RRs significantly decreased from March in 2020 to December 2021, except for June and September in 2020. Similarly, in patients with IPF defined based on the ICD-10 and RID (analysis 2), the RRs significantly decreased from March 2020 to December 2021, except for June and September 2020. In the sensitivity analysis of analysis 1, the RR significantly decreased in 2020 (0.93; 95%CI: 0.88-0.99; P = 0.029), whereas the RR in 2021 was not significantly different. The RRs in the sensitivity analysis of analysis 2 significantly decreased to 0.85 (0.79-0.92; P < 0.001) in 2020 and 0.82 (0.76-0.88; P < 0.001) in 2021. In the subgroup analysis, the rates of IPF admissions significantly decreased in 2020 and 2021 across both sexes, patients aged ≥ 60 years, and all household income groups. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of IPF admissions significantly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This result indicates that preventive measures against COVID-19 may effectively mitigate IPF exacerbation. Therefore, it is assumed that there is a close relationship between respiratory viral infections and IPF exacerbations.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacoacupuncture (PA) is an alternative injection therapy for a broad range of conditions. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness and safety of PA in treating frozen shoulder (FS) and aims to standardise PA characteristics in clinical practice. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing PA for FS were systematically reviewed from seven electronic databases up to August 31, 2023. Outcomes measured included the visual analogue scale (VAS) or numerical rating scale (NRS), effective rate, Constant-Murley Score (CMS), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), ROM, quality of life (QoL), and adverse events. Data analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3, with the risk of bias in each trial evaluated using Cochrane's risk of bias tool. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool assessed the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Thirteen RCTs involving 1034 patients met the inclusion criteria, with eleven RCTs and 872 patients included in the meta-analysis. PA showed low-quality evidence of improvement in VAS, effective rate, CMS Total, and CMS Pain. Moderate-quality evidence indicated improvement in CMS ADL and CMS Mobility. PA was effective in four SF-36 subscales: physical function, social role function, mental health, and emotional role function. No significant difference in CMS strength was observed. One trial reported mild anaphylaxis reaction to bee venom as an adverse event. CONCLUSION: PA may offer potential benefits as an alternative injection therapy for FS patients. Further well-designed RCTs with rigorous methodology are required to substantiate its therapeutic efficacy and clinical utility. REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (CRD42023445708).

Solid-state electrolytes with argyrodite structures, such as Li6PS5Cl, have attracted considerable attention due to their superior safety compared to liquid electrolytes and higher ionic conductivity than other solid electrolytes. Although experimental efforts have been made to enhance conductivity by controlling the degree of disorder, the underlying diffusion mechanism is not yet fully understood. Moreover, existing theoretical analyses based on ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have limitations in addressing various types of disorder at room temperature. In this study, we directly investigate Li-ion diffusion in Li6PS5Cl at 300 K using large-scale, long-term MD simulations empowered by machine-learning potentials (MLPs). To ensure the convergence of conductivity values within an error range of 10%, we employ a 25 ns simulation using a 5 × 5 × 5 supercell containing 6500 atoms. The computed Li-ion conductivity, activation energies, and equilibrium site occupancies align well with experimental observations. Notably, Li-ion conductivity peaks when Cl ions occupy 25% of the 4c sites rather than at 50% where the disorder is maximized. In addition, Li-ion diffusion shows non-Arrhenius behavior, leading to different activation energies at high temperatures (>400 K). These phenomena are explained by the interplay between inter- and intracage jumps. By elucidation of the key factors affecting Li-ion diffusion in Li6PS5Cl, this work paves the way for optimizing ionic conductivity in the argyrodite family.

Background/Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) impairs quality of life (QoL). However, its disease burden in the general population remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the association between OSA and health-related QoL in the general Korean population. Methods: This study analyzed cross-sectional datasets of adults (≥40 years) in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019-2021. QoL was assessed using the 3-level EuroQoL 5-dimension component (EQ-5D-3L). The high risk of OSA was determined using the STOP-Bang questionnaire (score ≥ 3). Demographic and clinical factors were included in linear regression analyses to identify the factors associated with EQ-5D-3L. Results: Of the 8966 total participants, 6792 (75.8%) and 2174 (24.2%) were classified as having a low risk and high risk of OSA, respectively. The high risk OSA group showed significantly lower QoL scores when compared with the low risk OSA group (0.939 ± 0.003 vs. 0.951 ± 0.002, p < 0.001). However, the mean difference was within the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of EQ-5D-3L. Only females exceeded the MCID for the EQ-5D-3L. Elderly females with a high risk of OSA showed the lowest QoL. The regression coefficient of high risk OSA in the multivariate model was -0.018 (95% CI: -0.025--0.01, p < 0.001). Patient demographics and comorbidities also showed significant associations with the EQ-5D-3L. Their regression coefficient was higher than that of high risk OSA. Conclusions: The impact of high risk OSA on QoL manifested differently according to age and sex. The impact of comorbidities on QoL was greater than that of high risk OSA, highlighting the important role of comorbidities and the need for their adjustment in the assessment of QoL.

PURPOSE: To investigate the preoperative choriocapillaris perfusion (CCP) as a biomarker in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 28 patients (28 eyes) with unilateral iERM who received pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling were included for retrospective observational study. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and angiography (OCTA) was performed before and after PPV. Area, perimeter, and circularity of superficial foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were analyzed preoperatively in both eyes using OCTA. Preoperative CCP was also analyzed with binarized en-face OCTA images. Measurements of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central foveal thickness (CFT) by OCT were conducted at the baseline and 6 months following the surgery. The correlations of preoperative OCT parameters with postoperative BCVA and CFT reduction were analyzed. RESULTS: CCP was significantly lower (p < 0.001) and FAZ had shrunk (p < 0.001) in eyes with iERM compared to unaffected fellow eyes before surgery. BCVA and CFT became significantly improved after surgery (p = 0.001, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that preoperative CCP was significantly related with BCVA improvement (ß = 0.185, p = 0.005), postoperative BCVA (ß = 0.108, p = 0.023) and ratio of post- to preoperative CFT (ß = 0.106, p = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative CCP is a biomarker for poor functional and anatomical prognosis after surgery in iERM.

BACKGROUND: Traditional pharmacological interventions are well tolerated in the management of elevated blood pressure (BP) for individuals with resistant hypertension. Although neuromodulation has been investigated as an alternative solution, its open-loop (OL) modality cannot follow the patient's physiological state. In fact, neuromodulation for controlling highly fluctuating BP necessitates a closed-loop (CL) stimulation modality based on biomarkers to monitor the patient's continuously varying physiological state. OBJECTIVE: By leveraging its intuitive linkage with BP responses in ongoing efforts aimed at developing a CL system to enhance temporal BP reduction effect, this study proposes a CL neuromodulation modality that controls nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) activity to effectively reduce BP, thus reflecting continuously varying physiological states. METHOD: While performing neurostimulation targeting the NTS in the rat model, the arterial BP response and neural activity of the NTS were simultaneously measured. To evaluate the temporal BP response effect of CL neurostimulation, OL (constant parameter; 20 Hz, 200 µA) and CL (Initial parameter; 11 Hz, 112 µA) stimulation protocols were performed with stimulation 180 s and rest 600 s, respectively, and examined NTS activity and BP response to the protocols. RESULTS: In-vivo experiments for OL versus CL protocol for direct NTS stimulation in rats demonstrated an enhancement in temporal BP reduction via the CL modulation of NTS activity. CONCLUSION: This study proposes a CL stimulation modality that enhances the effectiveness of BP control using a feedback control algorithm based on neural signals, thereby suggesting a new approach to antihypertensive neuromodulation.

The outbreak of clade 2.3.4.4b H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in North America that started in 2021 has increased interest in applying vaccination as a strategy to help control and prevent the disease in poultry. Two commercially available vaccines based on the recombinant herpes virus of turkeys (rHVT) vector were tested against a recent North American clade 2.3.4.4b H5 HPAI virus isolate: A/turkey/Indiana/22-003707-003/2022 H5N1 in specific pathogen free white leghorn (WL) chickens and commercial broiler chickens. One rHVT-H5 vaccine encodes a hemagglutinin (HA) gene designed by the computationally optimized broadly reactive antigen method (COBRA-HVT vaccine). The other encodes an HA gene of a clade 2.2 virus (2.2-HVT vaccine). There was 100% survival of both chicken types COBRA-HVT vaccinated groups and in the 2.2-HVT vaccinated groups there was 94.8% and 90% survival of the WL and broilers respectively. Compared to the 2.2-HVT vaccinated groups, WL in the COBRA-HVT vaccinated group shed significantly lower mean viral titers by the cloacal route and broilers shed significantly lower titers by the oropharyngeal route than broilers. Virus titers detected in oral and cloacal swabs were otherwise similar among both vaccine groups and chicken types. To assess antibody-based tests to identify birds that have been infected after vaccination (DIVA-VI), sera collected after the challenge were tested with enzyme-linked lectin assay-neuraminidase inhibition (ELLA-NI) for N1 neuraminidase antibody detection and by commercial ELISA for detection of antibodies to the NP protein. As early as 7 days post challenge (DPC) 100% of the chickens were positive by ELLA-NI. ELISA was less sensitive with a maximum of 75% positive at 10DPC in broilers vaccinated with 2.2-HVT. Both vaccines provided protection from challenge to both types of chickens and ELLA-NI was sensitive at identifying antibodies to the challenge virus therefore should be evaluated further for DIVA-VI.

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are among the most prevalent conditions that might predispose individuals to life-threatening events. We aimed to examine their associations with cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality using a large-scale population dataset from the National Health Information Database in Korea. Patients and Methods: This population-based cohort study enrolled adults aged ≥40 years who had undergone more than two health examinations between 2009 and 2011. They were divided into four groups based on the presence of COPD and MetS. Analysis of the outcomes and CV events or deaths was performed from 2014 to 2019. We compared CV event incidence and mortality rates using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: Totally, 5,101,810 individuals were included, among whom 3,738,458 (73.3%) had neither COPD nor MetS, 1,193,014 (23.4%) had only MetS, 125,976 (2.5%) had only COPD, and 44,362 (0.9%) had both. The risk of CV events was significantly higher in individuals with both COPD and MetS than in those with either COPD or MetS alone (HRs: 2.4 vs 1.6 and 1.8, respectively; all P <0.001). Similarly, among those with both COPD and MetS, all-cause and CV mortality risks were also elevated (HRs, 2.9 and 3.0, respectively) compared to the risks in those with either COPD (HRs, 2.6 and 2.1, respectively) or MetS (HRs, 1.7 and 2.1, respectively; all P <0.001). Conclusion: The comorbidity of MetS in patients with COPD increases the incidence of CV events and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates.

Elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) can be associated with disease severity. However, studies on RDW for the prognosis of elderly patients with non-traumatic coma (NTC) are lacking. This study aims to examine the relationship between RDW and outcomes in elderly patients with NTC. This observational cohort study included elderly patients (aged ≥ 65 years) with NTC between January 2022 and December 2022. We measured RDW upon patient arrival at the emergency department (ED). We conducted a multivariable analysis using logistic regression of relevant covariates to predict in-hospital mortality. Survival curves based on 30-day mortality were designed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality, and the secondary outcome was 30-day mortality. A total of 689 patients were included in the study, and in-hospital mortality was 29.6% (n = 204). Our results found that the RDWs of non-survivors were significantly greater than those of survivors (14.6% vs 13.6%). Multivariable analysis showed that RDWs at ED arrival were independently associated with in-hospital mortality (odds ratio, 1.126; 95% confidence interval, 1.047-1.212; P < .001). The Kaplan-Meier curve indicated that the survival probability of patients with a low RDW was greater than those with a high RDW. Having a high RDW at ED arrival was associated with in-hospital mortality in elderly patients with NTC.

Histone chaperones are integral to chromatin dynamics, facilitating the assembly and disassembly of nucleosomes, thereby playing a crucial role in regulating gene expression and maintaining genomic stability. Moreover, they prevent aberrant histone interactions prior to chromatin assembly. Disruption in histone chaperone function may result in genomic instability, which is implicated in pathogenesis. This review aims to elucidate the role of histone chaperones in cancer pathologies and explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Histone chaperones have been found to be dysregulated in various cancers, with alterations in expression levels, mutations, or aberrant interactions leading to tumorigenesis and cancer progression. In addition, this review intends to highlight the molecular mechanisms of interactions between histone chaperones and oncogenic factors, underscoring their roles in cancer cell survival and proliferation. The dysregulation of histone chaperones is significantly correlated with cancer development, establishing them as active contributors to cancer pathology and viable targets for therapeutic intervention. This review advocates for continued research into histone chaperone-targeted therapies, which hold potential for precision medicine in oncology. Future advancements in understanding chaperone functions and interactions are anticipated to lead to novel cancer treatments, enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (srHCC) is a life-threatening disease. The prognosis of patients with srHCC after hepatectomy remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the prognosis and recurrence after hepatectomy in patients with srHCC. From 2015 to 2020, a retrospective analysis of patients with srHCC who underwent hepatectomy was performed, and compared with patients with unruptured HCC. Among the 86 patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy, 11 had srHCC. The median tumor size in the ruptured group was significantly larger than that in the unruptured group (P = .001). The incidence rate of vascular invasion and Glisson capsule invasion in the ruptured group was significantly higher than that in the unruptured group. (P = .012 and P < .001, respectively). The American Joint Committee on Cancer was significantly higher in the ruptured group than in the unruptured group (P < .001). In total, 8 (73%) patients in the ruptured group experienced recurrence, whereas the median recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) periods in the ruptured group were 15 (11-32) and 23 (17-38) months, respectively. In the unruptured group, 34 (45%) patients experienced recurrence, and the median RFS and OS periods were 20 (8-37, P = .099) and 33 (12-51, P = .394) months, respectively. Patients who developed peritoneal metastases were included in the ruptured group (n = 3). Ruptured HCCs exhibit worse oncological outcomes have poorer survival and higher recurrence rates than unruptured HCCs.

In this study, we prepared fermented products of isoflavone-enriched soybean leaves (IESLs) and analyzed their nutrients, isoflavones, anti-obesity efficacy, and effects on gut microbiota. Fermented IESLs (FIESLs) were found to be rich in nutrients, especially lauric acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. In addition, the concentrations of most essential free amino acids were increased compared to those of IESLs. The contents of bioactive compounds, such as total phenolic, total flavonoid, daidzein, and genistein, significantly increased as well. In addition, FIESLs administration in a high-fat diet (HFD) animal model improved the final body weight, epididymal fat, total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, blood glucose, and leptin levels, as well as reverting microbiota dysbiosis. In conclusion, these findings indicate that FIESLs have the potential to inhibit obesity caused by HFDs and serve as a modulator of gut microbiota, offering the prevention of diet-induced gut dysbiosis and metabolite diseases associated with obesity.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the air pollutants emitted from the petrochemical industry known to pose adverse health effects on workers. The database based on the third phase of The Environmental Health Study in the Korean National Industrial Complexes (EHSNIC) in Ulsan conducted from 2018 to 2021 was used. Subjects were divided into the exposed and control group according to the estimated pollution level and distances from the industrial complexes. Ambient benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were significantly higher in the exposed group compared to the controls, as well as their metabolites. Risk of chronic disease and atopic dermatitis was higher in the exposed group which was supported by higher serum inflammatory markers and high hazard index of the exposed region. These results can draw attention to people engaged with environmental plans and used as primary data when making policies to reduce pollutant levels around industrial complexes.

Numerous studies have suggested that noise exposure might be associated with changes in stress hormone levels. However, quantitative evidence for these effects in humans is rare and remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of exposure to noise and its different levels on stress hormone changes in task performance. Quasi-experimental noise exposure environment was established for 90 male university student volunteers in their twenties, and each was exposed to different noise levels during task performance. The stress hormones tested included cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), adrenaline, and noradrenaline. A one-way ANOVA was performed to investigate differences in hormone levels measured in the three groups according to the noise exposure levels (35, 45, or 75 dB). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to adjust for confounding factors that might affect hormone levels. After adjusting for confounders, significant exposure-dependent differences were found in hormone levels in salivary cortisol, serum cortisol, serum ACTH, and serum adrenaline. The amount of hormonal increase in 75 dB exposure group compared to 35 or 45 dB groups was detected. Similar results were also seen in the rate of change analysis. Our findings indicate that short-term noise exposure during task performance elevates stress hormone levels. Further, the extent of stress hormone alterations varies with noise exposure levels. Changes in hormone levels are an objective measure that may be used to identify health effects and stress responses in various noise environments.
