RESUMO

PURPOSE: Melatonin supplementation has been disclosed as an ergogenic substance. However, the effectiveness of melatonin supplementation in healthy subjects has not been systematically investigated. The present study analyzed the effects of melatonin supplementation on physical performance and recovery. In addition, it was investigated whether exercise bout or training alter melatonin secretion in athletes and exercise practitioners. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted and reported according to the guidelines outlined in the PRISMA statement. Based on the search and inclusion criteria, 21 studies were included in the systematic review, and 19 were included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS: Melatonin supplementation did not affect aerobic performance relative to time trial (-0.04; 95% CI: -0.51 to 0.44) and relative to VO2 (0.00; 95% CI: -0.57 to 0.57). Also, melatonin supplementation did not affect strength performance (0.19; 95% CI: -0.28 to 0.65). Only Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) secretion increased after melatonin supplementation (1.40; 95% CI: 0.29 to 2.51). Post-exercise melatonin secretion was not changed immediately after an exercise session (0.56; 95% CI: -0.29 to 1.41) and 60 min after exercise (0.56; 95% CI: -0.29 to 1.41). CONCLUSION: The data indicate that melatonin is not an ergogenic hormone. In contrast, melatonin supplementation improves post-exercise recovery, even without altering its secretion.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at evaluating acute and chronic effects of physical exercise on IgA and IgG levels, as well as its relationship with the susceptibility to develop upper respiratory tract infections (URTI). This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted and reported in accordance with PRISMA statement. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE was performed in July 2020. This systematic review and meta-analysis included studies in which participants performed acute exercise or chronic physical training and were subjected to analyses of URTI incidence and concentrations of IgA and IgG. The selected studies for systematic review were divided into the following three groups: (I) trials that evaluated the effects of acute exercise in sedentary subjects, (II) trials that evaluated the effects of acute exercise in athletes/trained individuals, and (III) trials that evaluated the effects of chronic physical training on the incidence of URTI, as well as on the levels of IgA and IgG. Acute exercise increases the IgA levels in trained subjects but does not affect its levels in untrained subjects. Such increase in IgA levels induced by acute exercise is greater in trained individual that performed ultramarathon. On the other hand, chronic physical training reduces IgA levels in both trained and untrained subjects, does not change IgA levels in non-military subjects, besides from not affecting IgG levels. The present systematic review and meta-analysis indicates that acute exercise positively influences IgA levels in trained individuals, being this effect pronounced when a strenuous exercise such as ultramarathon is executed. Chronic physical training, in turn, does not affect IgG levels.

Instagram (IG) reaches millions of people, sharing personal content and all kinds of information, including those related to exercise and health. However, the scientific quality of the posted information is questionable. Thus, this study aimed to analyze whether exercise and health information posted by popular Brazilian IG influencers has technical-scientific accuracy. A personal IG account was created to identify Brazilian IG profiles. The inclusion criteria of the accounts were: (1) having 50% of all the shared posts related to topics about exercise and health, such as nutrition, health and wellness, medicine, or physical fitness; and (2) having over 100,000 followers. Qualitative analysis revealed a low quality percentage (38.79 ± 25.43%) for all analyzed posts. Out of all the posts, only 13 (~2.7%) cited a reference endorsing the information. Moreover, the higher quality-ratio score of the posts was not directly associated with the higher educational qualification of the influencers (r = 0.313; p = 0.076). Nevertheless, the number of followers was inversely correlated with the educational qualification of the influencers (r = -0.450; p = 0.009), but not with the quality-ratio score of the posts (r = -0.178 p = 0.322). We conclude that prominent Brazilian IG influencers disseminate low-quality information about exercise and health, contributing to the wide-spreading of misinformation to millions of followers.

There is evidence that central cholinergic stimulation increases heat dissipation in normotensive rats besides causing changes on the cardiovascular system via modulation of baroreceptors activity. However, the contribution of the central cholinergic system on thermoregulatory responses and its relationship with cardiovascular adjustments in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), an animal model of reduced baroreceptor sensitivity and thermoregulatory deficit, has not been completely clarified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the involvement of the central cholinergic system in cardiovascular and thermoregulatory adjustments in SHRs. Male Wistar rats (n = 17) and SHRs (n = 17) were implanted with an intracerebroventricular cannula for injections of 2 µL of physostigmine (phy) or saline solution. Tail temperature (Ttail), internal body temperature (Tint), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), heart rate (HR) and metabolic rate were registered during 60 min while the animals remained at rest after randomly receiving the injections. The variability of the SAP and the HR was estimated by the fast Fourier transform. Phy treatment began a succession of cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses that resulted in increased SAP, reduced HR and increased Ttail in both Wistar and SHRs groups. The magnitude of these effects seems to be more intense in SHRs, since the improvement of heat dissipation reflected in Tint. Taken together, these results provide evidence that hypertensive rats present greater cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses than normotensive rats after central cholinergic stimulation.

Kaurenoic acid (KA) is a kaurane diterpene found in several medicinal plants that displays biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, smooth muscle relaxant and hypotensive response. However, there are no pharmacokinetic data available about this molecule. The purpose of the study was to determine the pharmacokinetic profile and the oral bioavailability of KA in rats. Wistar rats submitted to jugular vein cannulation received 50 mg/kg of KA by intravenous or oral route. The implanted cannula allowed intravenous administration and serial blood collection along 10 h. Analytical quantification was performed by reversed phase HPLC-UV and mobile phase composed by acetonitrile:acidified water (70:30 v/v). The validated analytical method showed precision, accuracy, robustness, reliability and linearity between 0.75 and 100 µg/mL. KA administered intravenously showed a linear and two-compartment kinetic behavior at the tested dose. The following pharmacokinetic parameters were determined: Cmax = 22.17 ±â€¯1.65 mg/L; V = 14.53 ±â€¯1.47 L/kg; CL = 17.67 ±â€¯1.50 mL/min/kg; AUC0-∞ = 2859.65 ±â€¯278.42 mg·min/L, K = 0.073 ±â€¯0.005 h-1 and t1/2ß = 9.52 ±â€¯0.61 h. Oral treatment did not provide detectable plasma levels of KA, avoiding the determination of its bioavailability.

The cardiovascular system plays a direct role in the maintenance of body temperature. Whether passive heating alters cardiovascular autonomic modulation in conscious rats is still unknown. This study investigated the effects of passive heating on systolic blood pressure variability (SBPV) and heart rate variability (HRV) in conscious rats and the involvement of the renin-angiotensin system in the passive heating effects on SBPV and HRV. Fourteen male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the control group or the losartan treatment group. A catheter was implanted in the left carotid artery to record pulsatile arterial pressure (PAP), and a telemetry sensor was implanted in the abdominal cavity to measure body temperature (Tbody). After recovering from surgery, the animals were subjected to a passive heating protocol (35°C; 30min) in resting conditions, during which Tbody, tail skin temperature and PAP were measured. The mean arterial pressure, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, double product (i.e., the product of systolic blood pressure by heart rate), SBPV and HRV were calculated from the PAP. SBPV and HRV were analyzed in terms of both time and frequency domains. Increases in the thermoregulatory and cardiovascular parameters were observed during passive heating in both groups, and those increases were reflected in the higher time and frequency domains of the SBPV. However, passive heating was not effective in altering HRV. Passive heating altered SBPV but not HRV in conscious rats when they were treated with losartan.

The effects of increased brain availability of L-arginine (L-arg), a precursor for nitric oxide synthesis, on core body temperature (Tcore ) and cutaneous heat loss were evaluated in running rats. One week prior to the experiments, adult male Wistar rats received the following implants: a chronic guide cannula in the lateral cerebral ventricle and a temperature sensor in the abdominal cavity. On the day of the experiments, the rats were assigned to receive a 2-µL intracerebroventricular injection of either NaCl (0.15 mol/L) or L-arg solution (0.825, 1.65 or 3.30 mol/L); Tcore and tail skin temperature were measured while the rats ran at a speed of 18 m/min until they were fatigued. L-arginine induced a dose-dependent reduction in the threshold Tcore required for cutaneous heat loss (38.09 ± 0.20°C for 3.30-mol/L L-arg vs 38.61 ± 0.10°C for saline; P < 0.05), which attenuated the exercise-induced hyperthermia. Although the rats treated with L-arg presented a lower Tcore at the end of exercise (~0.7°C lower after treatment with the highest dose), no changes in the time to fatigue were observed relative to the control trial. These results suggest that brain L-arg controls heat loss during exercise, most likely by modulating the sympathetic vasoconstrictor tonus to skin vessels. Furthermore, despite facilitating cutaneous heat loss mechanisms, increased brain L-arg availability did not enhance physical performance.

INTRODUÇÃO: Obstrução nasal crônica secundária a hipertrofia das conchas nasais inferiores é um sintoma comum, de importante morbidade em nosso meio. Várias técnicas cirúrgicas são descritas para os casos refratários aos tratamentos clínicos, porém, há controversas sobre qual delas é a mais efetiva e sujeita a menos complicações. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia, a segurança e exequibilidade do uso do ácido tricloroacético ambulatorial para o tratamento da hipertrofia dos cornetos inferiores. MÉTODO: Trabalho prospectivo com 29 pacientes que foram submetidos à técnica ambulatorial de infiltração de ácido tricloroacético a 30 por cento submucosa dos cornetos inferiores, sob anestesia tópica. Foram avaliados os sintomas de rinorreia e obstrução nasal utilizando escala visual e analógica (EVA 010) pré cauterização e um ano pós procedimento. RESULTADOS: Diminuição significativa da obstrução nasal e da rinorreia um ano pós procedimento. As complicações foram sinéquias leves em dois pacientes e sangramentos, de pequena monta, em quatro casos com resolução espontânea. CONCLUSÃO: O método proposto apresentou ótimos resultados quanto à obstrução nasal e rinorreia, pode ser realizado em ambiente ambulatorial, e vem nos mostrando ser de baixa complicação.


INTRODUCTION: Chronic secondary nasal obstruction, the hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates is a common symptom of great morbidity in our society. Several surgical techniques are described to cases refractory to medical treatments, however, there are controversy about which one of them is more effective and less subject to complications. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the efficacy, security and practicability of using ambulatory trichloroacetic acid to treat the hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates. METHOD: Prospective study with 29 patients submitted to the ambulatory technique of 30 percent trichloroacetic acid infiltration in the inferior turbinate's submucosa, under topic anesthesia. The symptoms of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction were evaluated using the analogical and visual scale (AVS 010) pre-cautery and one year post-procedure. RESULTS: Significant nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea reduction one year post-procedure. The complications were light synechia in two patients and small bleedings in four spontaneous resolution cases. CONCLUSION: The proposed method showed excellent results concerning nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea, can be conducted in ambulatory environment, and has proved to be a low-complication method.
