RESUMO

Constructing a ocean Internet of Things requires an essential ocean environment monitoring system. However, the widely distributed existing ocean monitoring sensors make it impractical to provide power and transmit monitored information through cables. Therefore, ocean environment monitoring systems particularly need a continuous power supply and wireless transmission capability for monitoring information. Consequently, a high-strength, environmentally multi-compatible, floatable metamaterial energy harvesting device has been designed through integrated dynamic matching optimization of materials, structures, and signal transmission. The self-powered monitoring system breaks through the limitations of cables and batteries in the ultra-low-frequency wave environment (1 to 2 Hz), enabling real-time monitoring of various ocean parameters and wirelessly transmitting the data to the cloud for post-processing. Compared with solar and wind energy in the ocean environment, the energy harvesting device based on the defective state characteristics of metamaterials achieves a high-energy density (99 W/m3). For the first time, a stable power supply for the monitoring system has been realized in various weather conditions (24 h).

The increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant global health concern, affecting millions of individuals each year. Accurate diagnosis of acute CVD poses a formidable challenge, as misdiagnosis can significantly decrease patient survival rates. Traditional biomarkers have played a vital role in the diagnosis and prognosis of CVDs, but they can be influenced by various factors, such as age, sex, and renal function. Soluble ST2 (sST2) is a novel biomarker that is closely associated with different CVDs. Its low reference change value makes it suitable for continuous measurement, unaffected by age, kidney function, and other confounding factors, facilitating risk stratification of CVDs. Furthermore, the combination of sST2 with other biomarkers can enhance diagnostic accuracy and prognostic value. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of sST2, focusing on its diagnostic and prognostic value as a myocardial marker for different types of CVDs and discussing the current limitations of sST2.

In this paper, the problem of highly performance motion control of tank bidirectional stabilizer with dead zone nonlinearity and uncertain nonlinearity is addressed. First, the electromechanical coupling dynamics model of bidirectional stabilizer is developed finely. Second, the dead zone nonlinearity in bidirectional stabilizer is characterized as the combination of an uncertain time-varying gain and a bounded disturbance term. Meanwhile, an adaptive robust controller with dead zone compensation is proposed by organically combining adaptive technique and extended state observer (ESO) through backstepping method. The adaptive technique is employed to reduce the impact of unknown system parameter and dead zone parameter. Furthermore, the ESO is constructed to compensate the lumped uncertainties including unmodeled dynamics and dead zone residual, and integrated together via a feedforward cancellation technique. Moreover, the adaptive robust control law is derived to ensure final global stability. In stability analysis, the asymptotic tracking performance of the proposed controller can be guaranteed as the uncertainty nonlinearities in tank bidirectional stabilizer are constant. It is also guaranteed to achieve bounded tracking performance when time-varying uncertainties exist. Extensive co-simulation and experimental results verify the superiority of the proposed strategy.

Supported membranes and mixed matrix membranes have a limitation of harming the mass transfer due to the incompatibility between the support layer or the matrix and the active components of the membrane. Self-standing membranes, which could structurally abandon the support layer, altogether avoid the adverse effect, thus greatly facilitating the transmembrane mass transfer process. However, the abandonment of the support layer also reduces the membrane's mechanical properties and formability. In this review, our emphasis will be on self-standing membranes within the realm of materials and separation engineering. We will explore the materials employed in the fabrication of self-standing membranes, highlighting their ability to simultaneously enhance membrane performance and promote self-standing characteristics. Additionally, we will delve into the diverse techniques utilized for crafting self-standing membranes, encompassing interfacial polymerization, filtration, solvent casting, Langmuir-Blodgett & layer-by-layer assembly, electrospinning, compression, etc. Throughout the discussion, the merits and drawbacks associated with each of these preparation methods were elucidated. We also provide a brief overview of the applications of self-standing membranes, including water purification, gas separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, electrochemistry, and membrane reactor, as well as a brief description of the general strategies for performance enhancement of self-standing membranes. Finally, the current status of self-standing membranes and the challenges they may encounter were discussed.

Low phosphate (Pi) availability decreases photosynthesis, with phosphate limitation of photosynthesis occurring particularly during grain filling of cereal crops; however, effective genetic solutions remain to be established. We previously discovered that rice phosphate transporter OsPHO1;2 controls seed (sink) development through Pi reallocation during grain filling. Here, we find that OsPHO1;2 regulates Pi homeostasis and thus photosynthesis in leaves (source). Loss-of-function of OsPHO1;2 decreased Pi levels in leaves, leading to decreased photosynthetic electron transport activity, CO2 assimilation rate, and early occurrence of phosphate-limited photosynthesis. Interestingly, ectopic expression of OsPHO1;2 greatly increased Pi availability, and thereby, increased photosynthetic rate in leaves during grain filling, contributing to increased yield. This was supported by the effect of foliar Pi application. Moreover, analysis of core rice germplasm resources revealed that higher OsPHO1;2 expression was associated with enhanced photosynthesis and yield potential compared to those with lower expression. These findings reveal that phosphate-limitation of photosynthesis can be relieved via a genetic approach, and the OsPHO1;2 gene can be employed to reinforce crop breeding strategies for achieving higher photosynthetic efficiency.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have demonstrated effectiveness in treating various cancers, particularly exhibiting specificity in targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. Recent advancements in phase 3 clinical trials have broadened current understanding of ADCs, especially trastuzumab deruxtecan, in treating other HER2-expressing malignancies. This expansion of knowledge has led to the US Food and Drug Administration's approval of trastuzumab deruxtecan for HER2-positive and HER2-low breast cancer, HER2-positive gastric cancer, and HER2-mutant nonsmall cell lung cancer. Concurrent with the increasing use of ADCs in oncology, there is growing concern among health care professionals regarding the rise in the incidence of interstitial lung disease or pneumonitis (ILD/p), which is associated with anti-HER2 ADC therapy. Studies on anti-HER2 ADCs have reported varying ILD/p mortality rates. Consequently, it is crucial to establish guidelines for the diagnosis and management of ILD/p in patients receiving anti-HER2 ADC therapy. To this end, a panel of Chinese experts was convened to formulate a strategic approach for the identification and management of ILD/p in patients treated with anti-HER2 ADC therapy. This report presents the expert panel's opinions and recommendations, which are intended to guide the management of ILD/p induced by anti-HER2 ADC therapy in clinical practice.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles have attracted increasing attention due to their unique structure and properties. However, it is difficult to synthesize h-BN nanoparticles with uniform spherical morphology due to their crystal characteristic. The morphology control by tuning their precursor synthesis is a promising and effective strategy to solve this problem. Especially, the treatment temperature of precursors plays an important role in the morphology and surface area of h-BN nanoparticles. Herein, h-BN nanoparticles with different morphologies were synthesized via regulating the treatment temperature of precursors. The result shows that treatment temperature will affect the microstructure and state of precursor and further influence the morphology of h-BN products. Benefiting from the unique structure, the h-BN obtained using 250 °C precursors shows higher specific surface area (61.1 m2 g-1) than that of 85 °C (36.5 m2 g-1) and 145 °C (27.9 m2 g-1). h-BN products obtained using 250 °C precursors show higher specific surface area than that of 85 °C and 145 °C. The optimal condition for obtaining high-quality spherical h-BN is the pretreatment temperature of 250 °C and sintering temperature of 1300 °C. Importantly, compared with commercial h-BN nanoparticles, the synthesized h-BN nanoparticles show more uniform structure and larger specific surface area, indicating that sintering activity will be greatly improved. Furthermore, the reaction pathway and formation mechanism of h-BN was revealed by DFT calculations. The result shows that the five stationary states and five transition states exist in the reaction pathway, and the energy barrier can be overcome at high temperatures to form a ring h-BN. In view of its simplicity and efficiency, this work is promising for designing and guiding the synthesis of h-BN nanoparticles with uniform morphology.

Light-flavor Baijiu (LFB) fermentation is a representative spontaneous mixed-culture solid-state fermentation process in which sorghum is used as the raw material. Raw materials and microorganisms are crucial to the flavor formation and quality of LFB. However, the microbial and physicochemical dynamics of different sorghum varieties during LFB fermentation, as well as their impact on flavor compounds are still largely unknown. Herein, PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) were applied to investigate microbial community succession and volatile flavor formation in glutinous/non-glutinous sorghum-based fermented grains during LFB fermentation. Fermented grains made of glutinous sorghum Liangnuo No. 1 (GLN) had higher bacterial α-diversity and lower fungal α-diversity than those with fermented grains prepared with non-glutinous red sorghum (NRS) (p < 0.05). The dominant microbial species were Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Acetobacter pasteurinus, and Lactobacillus helveticus, the latter two of which were the predominant bacteria observed at the end of fermentation in GLN and NRS, respectively. Moisture content and reducing sugar had a more significant impact on the microorganisms in GLN, while amino acid nitrogen, total free amino acids, and residual starch were the main driving factors driving the microbial community in NRS. The correlation network and discriminant analysis indicated that a relatively high content of 4-vinylguaiacol showed a significant positive association with significant differential microbial species in GLN. These results provided valuable insights for improving the quality of LFB.

Oxidative stress contributes greatly to doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity. Down-regulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a key factor in DOX-induced myocardial oxidative injury. Recently, we found that mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1 (MALT1)-dependent k48-linked ubiquitination was responsible for down-regulation of myocardial Nrf2 in DOX-treated mice. Micafungin, an antifungal drug, was identified as a potential MALT1 inhibitor. This study aims to explore whether micafungin can reduce DOX-induced myocardial oxidative injury and if its anti-oxidative effect involves a suppression of MALT1-dependent k48-linked ubiquitination of Nrf2. To establish the cardiotoxicity models in vivo and in vitro, mice were treated with a single dose of DOX (15 mg/kg, i.p.) and cardiomyocytes were incubated with DOX (1 µM) for 24 h, respectively. Using mouse model of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, micafungin (10 or 20 mg/kg) was shown to improve cardiac function, concomitant with suppression of oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Similar protective roles of micafungin (1 or 5 µM) were observed in DOX-treated cardiomyocytes. Mechanistically, micafungin weakened the interaction between MALT1 and Nrf2, decreased the k48-linked ubiquitination of Nrf2 while elevated the protein levels of Nrf2 in both DOX-treated mice and cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, MALT1 overexpression counteracted the cardioprotective effects of micafungin. In conclusion, micafungin reduces DOX-induced myocardial oxidative injury via suppression of MALT1, which decreases the k48-linked ubiquitination of Nrf2 and elevates Nrf2 protein levels. Thus, micafungin may be repurposed for treating DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

Ultrahigh-temperature Joule-heating of carbon nanostructures opens up unique opportunities for property enhancements and expanded applications. This study employs rapid electrical Joule-heating at ultrahigh temperatures (up to 3000 K within 60 s) to induce a transformation in nanocarbon aerogels, resulting in highly graphitic structures. These aerogels function as versatile platforms for synthesizing customizable metal oxide nanoparticles while significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to conventional furnace heating methods. The thermal conductivity of the aerogel, characterized by Umklapp scattering, can be precisely adjusted by tuning the heating temperature. Utilizing the aerogel's superhydrophobic properties enables its practical application in filtration systems for efficiently separating toxic halogenated solvents from water. The hierarchically porous aerogel, featuring a high surface area of 607 m2 g-1, ensures the uniform distribution and spacing of embedded metal oxide nanoparticles, offering considerable advantages for catalytic applications. These findings demonstrate exceptional catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization, achieving a 98.9% conversion of dibenzothiophene in the model fuel. These results are corroborated by theoretical calculations, surpassing many high-performance catalysts. This work highlights the pragmatic and highly efficient use of nanocarbon structures in nanoparticle synthesis under ultrahigh temperatures, with short heating durations. Its broad implications extend to the fields of electrochemistry, energy storage, and high-temperature sensing.

Water vapor inevitably exists in the environment, which causes adverse impacts on many crucial chemical reactions. However, high water vapor of up to 10 vol %─relevant to a broad spectrum of industrial practices-for catalytic implications has been less investigated or neglected. As such, we explored an industry-relevant, humidity-highly sensitive benzene oxidation only in the presence of 10 vol % water vapor using the well-established Pt/Co3O4 catalysts, to bring such an important yet ignored topic to the forefront. Results revealed that Pt/Co3O4 catalysts possessing higher contents of Pt nanoparticles exhibited marked tolerance to water vapor interference. Under an incomplete benzene conversion condition, the input of 10 vol % water vapor indeed impaired the catalytic performance of Pt/Co3O4 catalyst significantly, which, in fact, was caused by the unfavorable formation of carboxylate species covering the catalyst's surface engendering irrecoverable activity loss, instead of the well-accepted water competitive adsorption. While such activity loss can be restored by elevating the reaction to a higher temperature. This study helps us to understand the compromised catalytic activity caused by high humidity, urging the systematic evaluation of well-established catalyst systems in high water vapor-contained conditions and pressing the development of water-tolerant catalysts for real-life application consideration.

PURPOSE: Melatonin has promising protective effects for retinopathy. However, its roles in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. We aimed to explore its roles and mechanisms in a ROP model. METHODS: Hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to observe the morphology of the retina. Immunofluorescence was used to detect positive (Nrf2+ and VEGF+) cells. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the level of nuclear expression of PCNA in retinal tissue. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to observe the morphology and structure of pigment cells. qRT-PCR was used to assay the expression of miR-23a-3p, Nrf2, and HO-1. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of Nrf2, HO-1, ß-actin, and Lamin B1. RESULTS: Melatonin or miR-23a-3p antagomir treatment could ameliorate the Oxygen-induced pathological changes, increased the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1, SOD, and GSH-Px, and decreased the expression of VEGF, miR-23a-3p, MDA and the apoptosis in the ROP model. Further target prediction and luciferase reporter assays confirmed the targeted binding relationship between miR-23a-3p and Nrf2. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that melatonin could ameliorate H2O2-induced apoptosis and oxidative stress injury in RGC cells by mediating miR-23a-3p/Nrf2 signaling pathway, thereby improving retinal degeneration.

Shrews being insectivores, serve as natural reservoirs for a wide array of zoonotic viruses, including the recently discovered Langya henipavirus (LayV) in China in 2018. It is crucial to understand the shrew-associated virome, viral diversity, and new viruses. In the current study, we conducted high-throughput sequencing on lung samples obtained from 398 shrews captured along the eastern coast of China, and characterized the high-depth virome of 6 common shrew species (Anourosorex squamipes, Crocidura lasiura, Crocidura shantungensis, Crocidura tanakae, Sorex caecutiens, and Suncus murinus). Our analysis revealed numerous shrew-associated viruses comprising 54 known viruses and 72 new viruses that significantly enhance our understanding of mammalian viruses. Notably, 34 identified viruses possess spillover-risk potential and six were human pathogenic viruses: LayV, influenza A virus (H5N6), rotavirus A, rabies virus, avian paramyxovirus 1, and rat hepatitis E virus. Moreover, ten previously unreported viruses in China were discovered, six among them have spillover-risk potential. Additionally, all 54 known viruses and 12 new viruses had the ability to cross species boundaries. Our data underscore the diversity of shrew-associated viruses and provide a foundation for further studies into tracing and predicting emerging infectious diseases originated from shrews.

The purpose of feature selection in protein sequence recognition problems is to select the optimal feature set and use it as training input for classifiers and discover key sequence features of specific proteins. In the feature selection process, relevant features associated with the target task will be retained, and irrelevant and redundant features will be removed. Therefore, in an ideal state, a feature combination with smaller feature dimensions and higher performance indicators is desired. This paper proposes an algorithm called IIFS2.0 based on the cache elimination strategy, which takes the local optimal combination of cached feature subsets as a breakthrough point. It searches for a new feature combination method through the cache elimination strategy to avoid the drawbacks of human factors and excessive reliance on feature sorting results. We validated and analyzed its effectiveness on the protein dataset, demonstrating that IIFS2.0 significantly reduces the dimensionality of feature combinations while also improving various evaluation indicators. The emergence of novel Omicron subvariants has raised concerns regarding the efficacy of immunity induced by prior Omicron subvariants breakthrough infection (BTI) or reinfection against current circulating Omicron subvariants. Here, we prospectively investigated the durability of antibody and T cell responses in individuals post Omicron BA.2.2 BTI, with or without subsequent Omicron BA.5 reinfection. Our findings reveal that the emerging Omicron subvariants, including CH.1.1, XBB, and JN.1, exhibit extensive immune evasion induced by previous infections. Notably, the level of IgG and neutralizing antibodies were found to correlate with subsequent Omicron BA.5 reinfection. Fortunately, T cell responses recognizing both Omicron BA.2 and CH.1.1 peptides were observed. Furthermore, Omicron BA.5 reinfection may alleviate immune imprinting induced by WT-vaccination, bolster virus-specific ICS+ T cell responses, and promote the phenotypic differentiation of virus-specific memory CD8+ T cells. Antigen-updated or T cell-conserved vaccines are needed to control the transmission of diverse emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a clonal plasma cell malignancy characterized by genetic heterogeneity. The cytogenetic abnormality t(4;14) strongly predicts poor outcome in MM patients even in the era of novel drugs. Ferroptosis is a new approach to antitumor therapy, but the relationship between ferroptosis and MM cytogenetic abnormalities remains largely unclear. Here, we show that t(4;14)-positive but not t(4;14)-negative MM cells are susceptible to class II ferroptosis inducers (FINs) in a preclinical setting, which is dependent on the significant upregulation of the MM SET domain-containing protein (MMSET). Mechanistically, MMSET upregulates acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) transcription by binding to its promoter region, leading to increased polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and enhanced sensitivity of t(4;14)-positive MM to ferroptosis. Supplementation of PUFAs efficiently restores ferroptosis susceptibility of t(4;14)-negative MM. In addition, combination treatment of class II FINs and bortezomib in t(4;14)-positive MM attenuates cellular glutathione and induces both apoptosis and ferroptosis levels by inhibiting the increase of solute carrier family 7 member 11, demonstrating synergistic anti-tumor activity in vitro and in a xenograft model. Taken together, our findings suggest that targeting ferroptosis with class II FINs is a novel and promising therapeutic approach to improve the outcome of t(4;14)-positive MM.

Background: Hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH) is one of serious complications of hypertension. Therefore, early identification of postoperative deterioration of patients and timely intervention measures are needed. Objective: To evaluate the application of Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) in HICH patients after neurosurgery. Design: Retrospective study. Participants: 82 HICH patients admitted to the neurosurgery department of our hospital from July 2022 to January 2023 were enrolled as subjects. Interventions: The MEWS score and the early warning score of postoperative deterioration of HICH patients were evaluated every hour. The respiratory rate, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation were monitored by a bedside multi-parameter monitor. The consciousness was evaluated by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score. Primary Outcome Measures: The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to compare the predictive effect of the early warning scale and the MEWS on the prognosis of postoperative deterioration in patients with HICH. Results: The area under the ROC curve of early warning score predicted the postoperative deterioration of patients to be 0.9660, the best cutoff value was 3.9 points, the sensitivity was 98.35%, the specificity was 86.67%, and the Yoden index was 0.784. The area under the ROC curve of the MEWS for postoperative deterioration of HICH patients was 0.869, the best cutoff value was 3.9, the sensitivity was 83.33%, the specificity was 71.67%, and the Yoden index was 0.517. However, unlike early warning scoring scale, MEWS score was only used to evaluate vital signs with high frequency of clinical monitoring, and the threshold range of heart rate, systolic blood pressure and consciousness score set was not fully applicable to patients after HICH. Conclusion: The early warning scoring scale for postoperative deterioration of HICH patients has good predictive efficacy and strong operability.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is an effective treatment for people living with HIV (PLHIVs), requiring an extended period to achieve immune reconstitution. Metabolic alterations induced by ART are crucial for predicting long-term therapeutic responses, yet comprehensive investigation through large-scale clinical studies is still lacking. Here, we collected plasma samples from 108 PLHIVs to the untargeted plasma metabolomics study, based on the longitudinal metabolomics design. Cross-sectional analyzes were performed at pre- and post-ART to explore the metabolic transformation induced by the therapy. Subsequently, delta values between pre- and post-ART measurements were calculated to quantify metabolic alterations. Then, the optimal set of metabolic traits and clinical signatures were further identified and applied to construct random forest model for predicting the future therapeutic responses to ART. We found distinct ART-induced metabolic transformation among PLHIVs. After confounder-adjustments, five metabolites exhibited significant associations with future immune response: tetracosatetraenoic acid (24:4n-6) (pre-ART) (odds ratio [OR]: 0.978, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.955~0.997), 1-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5-hydroxy-3-decanone (pre-ART) (OR: 1.298, 95% CI: 1.061~1.727), beta-PC-M6 (change) (OR: 0.967, 95% CI: 0.938~0.993), d-Galactaro-1,4-lactone (change) (OR: 1.032, 95% CI: 1.007~1.063), Annuionone C (change) (OR: 1.100, 95% CI: 1.030~1.190). The addition of plasma metabolites to clinical markers accurately predicted immune response to ART with an area under curve of 0.91. Notably, most disrupted metabolites were significantly correlated with blood lipids, suggesting that metabolic transformation might contribute to dyslipidemia among PLHIVs. This study highlights the distinct metabolic transformation post-ART among PLHIVs and reveals the potential role of metabolic transformation as key determinants of ART efficacy.

The inactivation of natural enzymes by radiation poses a great challenge to their applications for radiotherapy. Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) with high structural stability under such extreme conditions become a promising candidate for replacing natural enzymes to shrink tumors. Here, we report a CuN3-centered SAzyme (CuN3-SAzyme) that exhibits higher peroxidase-like catalytic activity than a CuN4-centered counterpart, by locally regulating the coordination environment of single copper sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the CuN3 active moiety confers optimal H2O2 adsorption and dissociation properties, thus contributing to high enzymatic activity of CuN3-SAzyme. The introduction of X-ray can improve the kinetics of the decomposition of H2O2 by CuN3-SAzyme. Moreover, CuN3-SAzyme is very stable after a total radiation dose of 500 Gy, without significant changes in its geometrical structure or coordination environment, and simultaneously still retains comparable peroxidase-like activity relative to natural enzymes. Finally, this developed CuN3-SAzyme with remarkable radioresistance can be used as an external field-improved therapeutics for enhancing radio-enzymatic therapy in vitro and in vivo. Overall, this study provides a paradigm for developing SAzymes with improved enzymatic activity through local coordination manipulation and high radioresistance over natural enzymes, for example, as sensitizers for cancer therapy.

RESUMO

Cyrtomiumadenotrichum Y. Nong & R.H. Jiang (Dryopteridaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to C.nephrolepioides (Christ) Copel., C.obliquum Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing, C.sinningense Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing and C.calcis Liang Zhang, N.T.Lu & Li Bing Zhang in having erect rhizomes, dense, leathery lamina and rounded sori, but it can be easily distinguishable by its stipe sparsely glandular, base obvious oblique, basiscopic base truncate, acroscopic base auriculate or ovate.
