Prickly ash peel oleoresin (PPO) is a highly concentrated oil of Prickly ash essential oil and has a stronger aroma. However, its low water solubility, high volatility, difficulty in transport and storage, and decomposition by light, heat, and oxygen limit its wider application. To solve this problem, this study used freeze-drying or spray-drying, with soybean protein isolate (SPI) or gum Arabic (GA), combined with aqueous maltodextrin (MD) as the encapsulating agents to prepare four types of PPO microcapsules (POMs). Spray-dried microcapsules with GA as the encapsulating agent achieved a high encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 92.31 ± 0.31%, improved the thermal stability of the PPO, and had spherical morphology. (Headspace solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) HS-SPME/GC-MS detected 41 volatile compounds in PPO; of these, linalool, ß-myrcene, sabinene, and D-limonene were identified as key flavor components. Principal component analysis (PCA) effectively distinguished the significant differences in flavor between PPO, spray-dried SPI/MD microcapsules (SS), and spray-dried GA/MD microcapsules (SG). During 15 days of air-exposure, the loss of flavor from SG (54.62 ± 0.54%) was significantly lower than PPO (79.45 ± 1.45%) and SS (57.55 ± 0.36%). During the air-exposure period, SG consistently had the highest antioxidant capacity, making it desirable for PPO packaging, and expanding its potential applications within the food industry.

BACKGROUND: Hyperlipidemia, inadequate diet, and excessive medication increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Paeonl (Pae), a phenolic compound found in Peony and Angelica dahurica, can alleviate lipid metabolism disorders and lipotoxicity. However, the molecular mechanism of Pae alleviating hyperlipidemia remains unclear and needs to be further explored. PURPOSE: In this study, we explored whether Pae can prevent hyperlipidemia and investigated the molecular mechanisms. METHODS: The effects of Pae (30, 45, 60mg·kg-1) on hyperlipidemia in Tyloapol-induced WT mice and Nrf2 knockout mice (Pae: 60mg·kg-1) were detected by oil red O staining, HE staining, TG, TC and other indexes. The expression levels of proinflammatory mediators, key lipid proteins and autophagy signaling pathway proteins were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot and immunofluorescence. The molecular mechanism of Pae alleviating hyperlipidemia was explored through molecular docking technique and in vivo and in vitro experiments. RESULTS: Several studies indicated that Pae effectively improved tyloxapol (Ty)-induced lipid metabolism disorder, as evidenced by decreased triglyceride content, increased carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1), and Sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) protein expression. In addition, Pae ameliorated hyperlipidemia by activating the AMPK/ACC and PI3K/mTOR pathways. Interestingly, the therapeutic effect of Pae on hyperlipidemia was markedly reduced in Nrf2-/- mice. Molecular docking results indicated that Pae and Nrf2 exhibited good binding ability, suggesting that Nrf2 is a core target mediating the effects of Pae in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Taken together, Pae alleviated hyperlipidemia in vivo and ameliorated lipid accumulation in vitro by activating AMPK/ACC and PI3K/mTOR signaling pathways via Nrf2 binding. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that paeonol can ameliorate hyperlipidemia and autophagy in mice by regulating Nrf2 and AMPK/mTOR pathways, and it has potential therapeutic value in the occurrence and development of hyperlipidemia.

Volatile compounds (VOCs) present in the oil extracted from yellow horn seeds were first analyzed using GC-IMS and GC-O-MS at varying roasting temperatures. A total of 97 VOCs were detected using GC-IMS, while 77 were tentatively identified using GC-O-MS. Moreover, both methods allowed the identification of 24 VOCs, of which the type of aldehydes is the most abundant. Combining the results of GC-IMS, GC-O-MS, OAVs, and VIP, it was concluded that hexanal, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, heptanal, 2-pentylfuran, 1-hexanol, and 1-octen-3-ol were the key aroma compounds. The PLS-DA and OPLS-DA models have demonstrated the ability to discriminate between different oil roasting temperatures with high accuracy. The roasting temperature of 160 °C was found to yield the highest content of main aroma substances, indicating its optimality for yellow horn seed oil production. These findings will prove beneficial for optimizing industrial production and enhancing oil aroma control.

The global prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection remains high, indicating a persistent presence of this pathogenic bacterium capable of infecting humans. This review summarizes the population demographics, transmission routes, as well as conventional and novel therapeutic approaches for H. pylori infection. The prevalence of H. pylori infection exceeds 30% in numerous countries worldwide and can be transmitted through interpersonal and zoonotic routes. Cytotoxin-related gene A (CagA) and vacuolar cytotoxin A (VacA) are the main virulence factors of H. pylori, contributing to its steep global infection rate. Preventative measures should be taken from people's living habits and dietary factors to reduce H. pylori infection. Phytotherapy, probiotics therapies and some emerging therapies have emerged as alternative treatments for H. pylori infection, addressing the issue of elevated antibiotic resistance rates. Plant extracts primarily target urease activity and adhesion activity to treat H. pylori, while probiotics prevent H. pylori infection through both immune and non-immune pathways. In the future, the primary research focus will be on combining multiple treatment methods to effectively eradicate H. pylori infection.

Aging is a process leading to a progressive loss of physiological integrity and homeostasis, and a primary risk factor for many late-onset chronic diseases. The mechanisms underlying aging have long piqued the curiosity of scientists. However, the idea that aging is a biological process susceptible to genetic manipulation was not well established until the discovery that the inhibition of insulin/IGF-1 signaling extended the lifespan of C. elegans. Although aging is a complex multisystem process, López-Otín et al. described aging in reference to nine hallmarks of aging. These nine hallmarks include: genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and altered intercellular communication. Due to recent advances in lipidomic, investigation into the role of lipids in biological aging has intensified, particularly the role of sphingolipids (SL). SLs are a diverse group of lipids originating from the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) and can be modified to create a vastly diverse group of bioactive metabolites that regulate almost every major cellular process, including cell cycle regulation, senescence, proliferation, and apoptosis. Although SL biology reaches all nine hallmarks of aging, its contribution to each hallmark is disproportionate. In this review, we will discuss in detail the major contributions of SLs to the hallmarks of aging and age-related diseases while also summarizing the importance of their other minor but integral contributions.
