Although clinical tests such as the Cincinnati Pre-hospital Stroke Scale (CPSS) and the Face Arm Speech Test (FAST) are commonly used for stroke screening, accurate administration is dependent on specialized training. In this study, we proposed a novel multimodal deep learning approach, based on the FAST, for assessing suspected stroke patients exhibiting symptoms such as limb weakness, facial paresis, and speech disorders in acute settings. We collected a dataset comprising videos and audio recordings of emergency room patients performing designated limb movements, facial expressions, and speech tests based on the FAST. We compared the constructed deep learning model, which was designed to process multi-modal datasets, with six prior models that achieved good action classification performance, including the I3D, SlowFast, X3D, TPN, TimeSformer, and MViT. We found that the findings of our deep learning model had a higher clinical value compared with the other approaches. Moreover, the multi-modal model outperformed its single-module variants, highlighting the benefit of utilizing multiple types of patient data, such as action videos and speech audio. These results indicate that a multi-modal deep learning model combined with the FAST could greatly improve the accuracy and sensitivity of early stroke identification of stroke, thus providing a practical and powerful tool for assessing stroke patients in an emergency clinical setting.

Chengdu Plain Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) is one of the most serious areas suffering from ozone pollution in China. A comprehensive field observation focused on the ozone production rate and its sensitivity was conducted at CPUA in the summer of 2019. Six sampling sites were set and two ozone pollution episodes were recognized. The daily maximum 8-h average (MDA8) O3 concentration reached 137.9 ppbv in the urban sites during the ozone pollution episode. Peak concentration of O3 was closely related to intense solar radiation, high temperatures, and precursor emissions. The OH-HO2-RO2 radical chemistry and ozone production rate (P(O3)) were calculated using an observation-based model (OBM). The daily peak OH concentration varied in the range of 3-13 × 106 molecules cm-3, and peak HO2 and RO2 were in the range of 2-14 × 108 molecules cm-3 during ozone pollution episodes. During the ozone pollution episode, the average maximum of P(O3) in suburban sites (about 30 ppbv h-1.) was compared with urban sites, and the maximum of P(O3) was 18 ppbv h-1 in rural sites. The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) results demonstrate that it was a VOCs-limited regime in the central urban area of Chengdu, with NOx suppression effect in some regions. In the southern neighboring suburb of Chengdu, it was VOCs-limited as well. However, the northern suburban area was a transition region. In the remote rural areas of the southern CPUA, it was highly NOx-limited. Local ozone production driven by the photochemical process is crucial to the ozone pollution formation in CPUA. The geographically differentiated recognition of the ozone regime found by this study can help to tailor control strategies for local conditions and avoid the negative effects of a one-size-fits-all approach.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms are common and harmful psychological illness in college students. Although some studies have illustrated that physical activity could reduce social anxiety symptoms, the specific mechanism is still unclear. Based on theoretical studies on resilience and sleep, this study constructed a serial mediation model to explore whether they mediate between physical activity and social anxiety symptoms among college students. METHODS: This study surveyed 9,530 college students from three colleges in China to explore the mediating effect of physical activity and sleep problems between physical activity and social anxiety symptoms. Participants were investigated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Sleep-related problems, and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale. Correlations between variables were analysed using Pearson correlation analysis and mediation analyses were performed using SPSS PROCESS macro 3.3 software. RESULT: The study found that physical activity was negatively associated with social anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, but positively with psychological resilience. After controlling for sociodemographic variables, physical activity can not only indirectly alleviate social anxiety symptoms through the separate mediation of psychological resilience and sleep problems, but also through the serial mediation of psychological resilience and sleep problems. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that improving physical activity levels could reduce social anxiety scores by increasing psychological resilience and sleep quality. This is of great reference significance for the prevention and intervention of college students' mental health.

Introduction: Oligomeric alpha-synuclein in red blood cells (RBC-o-α-Syn) has been shown to be increased in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, factors that affect RBC-o-α-Syn levels remain to be elucidated. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlations between RBC-o-α-Syn levels and the age, sex and different clinical variables of patients with PD. Methods: 167 patients with PD and 119 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in this study. The patients with PD were diagnosed based on the MDS clinical diagnostic criteria for PD. All participants were evaluated for their clinical characteristics. Western blot analysis was used to examine the molecular sizes of RBC-o-α-Syn. A newly established chemiluminescent immunoassay was used to measure RBC-o-α-Syn levels. Results: Higher RBC-o-α-Syn levels were detected in PD patients than in HC subjects. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve indicated that a cut off value of 55.29 ng/mg discriminated well between PD patients and HC subjects, with a sensitivity of 67.66% (95% CI: 60.24-74.29%), a specificity of 88.24% (95% CI: 81.22-92.86%), and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.857. The levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in female than male patients (p = 0.033). For different subtypes, the levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in the MIX subtype than the tremor-dominant (TD) PD. In addition, the levels of RBC-o-α-Syn were higher in patients with than without cognitive impairment (p = 0.016), and negatively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores (r = -0.156, p = 0.044). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that RBC-o-α-Syn levels in patients with PD are higher than those in HC subjects and affected by the sex and the severity of cognitive impairment.

Background: Gliomas are the most prevalent primary brain tumors, and patients typically exhibit poor prognoses. Increasing evidence suggests that telomere maintenance mechanisms play a crucial role in glioma development. However, the prognostic value of telomere-related genes in glioma remains uncertain. This study aimed to construct a prognostic model of telomere-related genes and further elucidate the potential association between the two. Methods: We acquired RNA-seq data for low-grade glioma (LGG) and glioblastoma (GBM), along with corresponding clinical information from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and normal brain tissue data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEX) database for differential analysis. Telomere-related genes were obtained from TelNet. Initially, we conducted a differential analysis on TCGA and GTEX data to identify differentially expressed telomere-related genes, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses on these genes. Subsequently, univariate Cox analysis and log-rank tests were employed to obtain prognosis-related genes. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis were sequentially utilized to construct prognostic models. The model's robustness was demonstrated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, and multivariate Cox regression of risk scores for clinical characteristics and prognostic models were calculated to assess independent prognostic factors. The aforementioned results were validated using the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) dataset. Finally, the CIBERSORT algorithm analyzed differences in immune cell infiltration levels between high- and low-risk groups, and candidate genes were validated in the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) database. Results: Differential analysis yielded 496 differentially expressed telomere-related genes. GO and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that these genes were primarily involved in telomere-related biological processes and pathways. Subsequently, a prognostic model comprising ten telomere-related genes was constructed through univariate Cox regression analysis, log-rank test, LASSO regression analysis, and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Patients were stratified into high-risk and low-risk groups based on risk scores. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival analysis revealed worse outcomes in the high-risk group compared to the low-risk group, and establishing that this prognostic model was a significant independent prognostic factor for glioma patients. Lastly, immune infiltration analysis was conducted, uncovering notable differences in the proportion of multiple immune cell infiltrations between high- and low-risk groups, and eight candidate genes were verified in the HPA database. Conclusions: This study successfully constructed a prognostic model of telomere-related genes, which can more accurately predict glioma patient prognosis, offer potential targets and a theoretical basis for glioma treatment, and serve as a reference for immunotherapy through immune infiltration analysis.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in various physiological and pathological processes in both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, most studies on circRNAs have focused on their roles as endogenous competitive RNAs. Here, we report a novel function of circRNA derived from the Fibrinogen-like protein 1 gene (circ-FGL1) that inhibits coelomocyte apoptosis via competing with the deubiquitinase AjOTUB1 to bind AjMyc in Apostichopus japonicus during Vibrio splendidus infection. The results showed that circ-FGL1 is significantly downregulated in coelomocytes of V. splendidus-induced A. japonicus and negatively regulates coelomocyte apoptosis through the AjBax-AjCyt c pathway. Mechanistically, the deubiquitinase AjOTUB1 and circ-FGL1 could interact with the transcription factor protein AjMyc in the same region with circ-FGL1/AjMyc having greater affinity. Under normal conditions, high levels of circ-FGL1 bind directly to AjMyc, inhibiting the deubiquitylation of AjMyc by AjOTUB1 and leading to the degradation of AjMyc. After V. splendidus infection, AjMyc disassociates from the depressed expression of circ-FGL1, promoting its deubiquitylation by binding to the induced deubiquitinase AjOTUB1 to inhibit its degradation. AjMyc is then transferred to nucleus and promotes the transcription of AjCyt c and AjBax to induce coelomocyte apoptosis. The new finding will expand our present outstanding on the functional role of circRNAs and suggests new therapeutic targets for the treatment of echinoderms during bacterial invasion.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is performed by a multidisciplinary team and includes systematic comprehensive team assessment and treatment. Comprehensive geriatric assessment has become a fundamental component of geriatric nursing, as a multidimensional approach is necessary to achieve the best diagnosis and therapy for older adults with frailty. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our review was to analyze the effects of comprehensive geriatric assessment interventions on older adults with frailty in hospital settings. METHODS: The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched from inception to February 28, 2024. Only randomized controlled trials were included in the analysis. The risk ratios (RRs) or standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated to determine the pooled intervention effects. Sensitivity analyses and publication bias analyses were also conducted. Methodological quality and evidence were assessed using the RoB2 tool and GRADE pro online tool. RESULTS: A total of 18 randomized controlled trials were included in this review. The results showed that participants in the intervention group had a lower risk of having decreased activities of daily living than did those in the control group (RR = 0.55, 95 % CI: 0.33 to 0.92, P = 0.021, low certainty evidence). Comprehensive geriatric assessment was associated with a reduced mortality risk (RR = 0.85, 95 % CI: 0.73 to 0.99, P = 0.038, high certainty evidence). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this systematic review analyzed the available literature, and the results showed that comprehensive geriatric assessment had significant benefits in terms of increased independence and was associated with a reduced mortality risk for older adults with frailty in hospital settings. However, the evidence was limited. Thus, more research is needed in the future to further enrich the evidence in the field of comprehensive geriatric assessment interventions for older adults with frailty.

INTRODUCTION: A strong link has been established between psoriasis and lipid disturbances; however, no study has systematically examined their global epidemiology. METHODS: We searched six databases from their inception up to October 1, 2023. Data analysis was conducted using Stata SE 15.1. We performed subgroup, meta-regression, and sensitivity analyses to assess the heterogeneity of the pooled studies. RESULTS: Our review included 239 studies comprising 15,519,570 participants. The pooled prevalence rate of dyslipidemia among individuals with psoriasis was 38 %. CONCLUSION: Patients with severe psoriasis should undergo screening for lipid abnormalities. This can facilitate the early detection of lipid dysfunction and associated cardiovascular comorbidities.

The large-scale and intensive development of the meat pigeon breeding industry have resulted in the replacement of a large number of low-performance local breeds by a few breeds with excellent production performance. However, due to the characteristics of pigeon species that are monogamous, for which the W chromosome cannot be recovered and for which semen cannot be cryopreserved, the preservation of pigeon species is still mainly based on in-situ preservation. In this study, pigeons were classified into 6 classes of endangerment based on the criteria of the 100-year inbreeding coefficient of poultry populations in the "Assessment of Endangered Poultry Genetic Resources" (NY/T 2996-2016). The results show that when the generation interval was 1.5 yr, the number of ideal populations with the same gene frequency variance or the same heterozygosity decay rate of pigeons in class 1 to 5 was ≤149, 150 to 204, 205 to 316, 317 to 649 and ≥650. In random-reserved breeding, when the generation interval was 1.5 yr, the number of male (female) pigeons corresponding to class 1 to 5 was ≤74, 75 to 102, 103 to 157, 158 to 324 and ≥325. In family-equal-reserved breeding, when the generation interval was 1.5 yr, the number of male (female) pigeons corresponding to class 1 to 5 was ≤36, 37 to 50, 51 to 78, 79 to 162 and ≥163. When the generation interval was 1.5 yr, the inbreeding increments corresponding to class 1 to 5 were ≥0.00335, 0.00244 to 0.00334, 0.00159 to 0.00243, 0.00078 to 0.00158 and ≤0.00077; with the same population size, the inbreeding coefficient and inbreeding increment decreased with the increase of generation interval; the population effective content, inbreeding coefficient and inbreeding increment of family-equal-reserved pigeons were lower than those of random-reserved pigeons. The results of this study have certain reference value for analyzing the status quo of local and endangered species, constructing live gene banks and breeding farms of poultry genetic resources, and rescuing endangered species.

As a part of the immune system, leukocytes have the features of circumvention of immunogenicity as well as recruitment to sites of inflammation during infection and tumorigenesis. Utilizing leukocytes as vehicles to carry theranostic agents is a promising strategy for highly efficient targeted delivery and treatment for inflammation and cancer. Specifically, the leukocytes, similar to "Trojan horses", can bypass the immune system and thus enhance the therapeutic effects on inflammation and cancer. In this context, the latest progress of leukocyte-based delivery systems for improving theranostics of inflammations and cancers is summarized, including in vitro incubation and in vivo internalization strategy. Although the therapeutic efficacy of leukocyte-based delivery systems has been achieved, the system construction is complex and the effect is not fulfilling demand completely. Encouragingly, a most recent work reported that the supramolecular arrangement of proteins on the nanocarriers would drive them to be selectively uptaken by neutrophils, opening a new avenue for diagnosis and treatment of inflammation. Moreover, enucleated cells are considered as the biomimetic drug delivery vehicle to retain the organelles for a range of diseases in a safe, controllable and effective manner. These novel findings provide more opportunities for researchers to rethink and redesign the leukocyte-based delivery systems to overcome existing limitations and broaden their usage, especially in clinical medicine. .

Precise disease detection is crucial in modern precision agriculture, especially in ensuring the health of tomato crops and enhancing agricultural productivity and product quality. Although most existing disease detection methods have helped growers identify tomato leaf diseases to some extent, these methods typically target fixed categories. When faced with new diseases, extensive and costly manual annotation is required to retrain the dataset. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a multimodal model PDC-VLD based on the open-vocabulary object detection (OVD) technology within the VLDet framework, which can accurately identify new tomato leaf diseases without manual annotation by using only image-text pairs. First, we developed a progressive visual transformer-convolutional pyramid module (PVT-C) that effectively extracts tomato leaf disease features and optimizes anchor box positioning using the self-supervised learning algorithm DINO, suppressing interference from irrelevant backgrounds. Then, a context feature guided module (CFG) was adopted to address the low adaptability and recognition accuracy of the model in data-scarce environments. To validate the model's effectiveness, we constructed a tomato leaf disease image dataset containing 4 base classes and 2 new categories. Experimental results show that the PDC-VLD model achieved 61.2% on the main evaluation metric mAP novel 50 , and 56.4% on mAP novel 75 , 87.7% on mAP base 50 , 81.0% on mAP all 50 , and 45.5% on average recall, outperforming existing OVD models. Our research provides an innovative solution for efficiently and accurately detecting new diseases, substantially reducing the need for manual annotation, and offering critical technical support and practical reference for agricultural workers.

Background: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) ablation is the established gold standard therapy for patients with symptomatic drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). Advancements in radiofrequency (RF) ablation, have led to the development of the novel contact force-sensing temperature-controlled very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) RF ablation. This setting delivers 90 W for up to 4 seconds with a constant irrigation flow rate of 8 mL/min. The aim of this study was to compare procedural outcomes and safety with conventional radiofrequency ablation. Methods: An observational study was conducted with patients who underwent first time PVI ablation between August 2020 and January 2022. The cohort was divided into: (1) vHPSD ablation; (2) High-power short duration (HPSD) ablation; (3) THERMOCOOL SMARTTOUCH™ SF (STSF). The vHPSD ablation group was prospectively recruited while the HPSD and STSF group were retrospectively collected. Primary outcomes were procedural success, PVI duration, ablation duration and incidence of perioperative adverse events. Secondary outcomes were intraprocedural morphine and midazolam requirement. Results: A total of 175 patients were included in the study with 100, 30 and 45 patients in the vHPSD, HPSD and STSF group, respectively. PVI was successfully attained in all vHPSD patients. vHPSD demonstrated significantly reduced time required for PVI and total energy application in comparison to the HPSD and STSF groups (67.7 ± 29.7 vs. 92.9 ± 25.7 vs. 93.6 ± 29.1 min, p < 0.0001; 9.87 ± 4.16 vs. 33.9 ± 7.49 vs. 36.0 ± 10.5 min, p < 0.0001, respectively). Intravenous morphine and midazolam requirement was lower in the vHPSD group compared to the HPSD and STSF groups (10.2 ± 3.43 vs. 16.1 ± 4.58 vs. 15.3 ± 3.94 mg, p < 0.0001; 4.04 ± 3.24 vs. 8.63 ± 5.22 vs. 8.58 ± 4.72 mg, p < 0.0001). One cardiac tamponade was observed in both the vHPSD and HPSD groups while the STSF group exhibited an embolic stoke and two pericardial effusions that did not require drainage. Conclusions: In this study, vHPSD demonstrated a comparable safety profile to the other treatment arms. Procedural duration and energy application time was substantially reduced along with sedation requirement notwithstanding the limitations of observational study design, these preliminary findings are promising with respect to periprocedural outcomes and safety of vHPSD however longitudinal outcomes will be essential to assessing the overall efficacy of this novel technology.

Facile synthesis of high-efficiency and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst is essential for producing clean hydrogen in energy storage systems. Herein, low Rh-doped flower-like Ni3S2/Co3S4 heterostructures were facilely prepared on porous nickel foam (labeled Rh-Ni3S2/Co3S4/NF) by a hydrothermal method. The correlation of the precursors types with the morphological structures and catalytic properties were rigorously investigated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the control groups. The low Rh doping within the catalyst played important role in boosting the catalytic characteristics. The resulting catalyst showed the smaller overpotentials of 197 and 78 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the OER and HER in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. And the potential only required 1.71 V to drive a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in a water splitting device. It reflects excellent overall water splitting of the home-made Rh-Ni3S2/Co3S4/NF. This strategy shed some constructive light for preparing transition metal sulfide-based electrocatalysts in water splitting devices.

The complex etiological factors associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), including perturbed iron homeostasis, and the unclear nature by which they contribute to disease progression have resulted in a limited number of effective therapeutic interventions. Here, we report that patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a pathological subtype of MAFLD, exhibit excess hepatic iron and that it has a strong positive correlation with disease progression. FerroTerminator1 (FOT1) effectively reverses liver injury across multiple MASH models without notable toxic side effects compared with clinically approved iron chelators. Mechanistically, our multi-omics analyses reveal that FOT1 concurrently inhibits hepatic iron accumulation and c-Myc-Acsl4-triggered ferroptosis in various MASH models. Furthermore, MAFLD cohort studies suggest that serum ferritin levels might serve as a predictive biomarker for FOT1-based therapy in MASH. These findings provide compelling evidence to support FOT1 as a promising novel therapeutic option for all stages of MAFLD and for future clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: The bidirectional relationship between the brain cortex and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains inadequately explored. METHODS: This study employed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the interaction between nine phenotypes, namely hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation (AF), and coronary heart disease (CHD), and brain cortex measurements, including total surface area (SA), average thickness (TH), and the SA and TH of 34 regions based on the Desikan-Killiany atlas. The nine traits were obtained from sources such as the UK Biobank and FinnGen, etc., while MRI-derived traits of cortical structure were sourced from the ENIGMA Consortium. The primary estimate was obtained using the inverse-variance weighted approach. False discovery rate adjustment was applied to p-values (q-values) in the analyses for regional cortical structure. RESULTS: A total of 1260 two-sample MR analyses were conducted. Existing CHD demonstrated an influence on the SA of the banks of the superior temporal sulcus (bankssts) (q = 0.018) and the superior frontal lobe (q = 0.018), while hypertension was associated with changes in the TH of the lateral occipital region (q = 0.02). Regarding the effects of the brain cortex on CVD incidence, total SA was significantly associated with the risk of CHD. Additionally, 15 regions and four areas exhibited significant effects on blood pressure and AF risk, respectively (q < 0.05). These regions were primarily located in the frontal, temporal, and cingulate areas, which are responsible for cognitive function and mood regulation. CONCLUSION: The detection of cortical changes through MRI could aid in screening for potential neuropsychiatric disorders in individuals with established CVD. Moreover, abnormalities in cortical structure may predict future CVD risk, offering new insights for prevention and treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Patients with diabetes have an increased risk of developing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). This study aimed to compare indices of myocardial deformation and perfusion between patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with and without HFpEF and to investigate the relationship between myocardial strain and perfusion reserve. METHODS: This study included 156 patients with T2DM without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) and 50 healthy volunteers who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) examination at our center. Patients with T2DM were subdivided into the T2DM-HFpEF (n = 74) and the T2DM-non-HFpEF (n = 82) groups. The parameters of left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) strain as well as stress myocardial perfusion were compared. The correlation between myocardial deformation and perfusion parameters was also assessed. Mediation analyses were used to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of T2DM on LA strain. RESULTS: Patients with T2DM and HFpEF had reduced LV radial peak systolic strain rate (PSSR), LV circumferential peak diastolic strain rate (PDSR), LA reservoir strain, global myocardial perfusion reserve index (MPRI), and increased LA booster strain compared to patients with T2DM without HFpEF (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, LV longitudinal PSSR, LA reservoir, and LA conduit strain were notably impaired in patients with T2DM without HFpEF compared to controls (all P < 0.05), but LV torsion, LV radial PSSR, and LA booster strain compensated for these alterations (all P < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that LA reservoir and LA booster strain were independently associated with global MPRI (ß = 0.259, P < 0.001; ß = - 0.326, P < 0.001, respectively). Further, the difference in LA reservoir and LA booster strain between patients with T2DM with and without HFpEF was totally mediated by global MPRI. Global stress PI, LA booster, global rest PI, and global MPRI showed high accuracy in diagnosing HFpEF among patients with T2DM (areas under the curve [AUC]: 0.803, 0.790, 0.740, 0.740, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with T2DM and HFpEF exhibited significant LV systolic and diastolic deformation, decreased LA reservoir strain, severe impairment of myocardial perfusion, and elevated LA booster strain that is a compensatory response in HFpEF. Global MPRI was identified as an independent influencing factor on LA reservoir and LA booster strain. The difference in LA reservoir and LA booster strain between patients with T2DM with and without HFpEF was totally mediated by global MPRI, suggesting a possible mechanistic link between microcirculation impairment and cardiac dysfunction in diabetes. Myocardial perfusion and LA strain may prove valuable for diagnosing and managing HFpEF in the future.

Plant secondary metabolites have attracted considerable attention due to the increasing demand for finite fossil resources and environmental concerns. However, the biosynthesis of aromatic aldehydes or alcohols from renewable resources remains challenging and costly. This study explores a novel approach performed by the aromatic catabolizing organism Rhizopus oryzae, which enables a ferulic acid-activated co-production of 4-vinyl guaiacol (4-VG) and fumaric acid. The strain produced 4.60 g/L 4-VG and 11.25 g/L fumaric acid from a mixed carbon source of glucose and xylose, suggesting that this new pathway allows the potential production of natural 4-VG from low-cost substrates. This green route, which utilizes Rhizopus oryzae's ability to efficiently convert various renewable resources into valuable chemicals, paves the way for improved catalytic efficiency in 4-VG production.

A new cocrystalline form of metronidazole (MET) with propyl gallate (PRO), referred to as MET-PRO, has been successfully synthesized and characterized. Structural characterization reveals that MET and PRO are present in a 1:1 ratio within the cocrystal lattice, with one water molecule equivalent incorporated into the structure. This arrangement facilitates the formation of MET-PRO heterodimers and multiple stable units, collectively constructing a three-dimensional supramolecular network. The solubility and permeability of the current cocrystal, along with the parent drug MET, are evaluated under physiological pH conditions. Experimental findings reveal that MET within the cocrystal exhibits a 1.54-2.37 folds increase in solubility and approximately a threefold improvement in permeability compared to its standalone form. Intriguingly, these concurrent enhancements in the physicochemical properties of MET lead to augmented antibacterial activity in vitro, evidenced by a reduction in minimum inhibitory concentration. Even more intriguingly, the enhanced physicochemical properties observed in vitro for the current cocrystal translate into tangible pharmacokinetic benefits in vivo, characterized by prolonged half-life and enhanced bioavailability. Consequently, this research not only introduces a fresh crystal structure for antibacterial medication but also presents approach for optimizing drug properties across in vitro and in vivo settings, while concurrently bolstering the antibacterial effectiveness of MET through pharmaceutical cocrystallization techniques.

In this study, two types of microgel particles from egg yolk components were prepared by combining enzymatic hydrolysis with high-pressure homogenization (HPH), and their differences in physicochemical properties, foaming properties, and microstructure were compared. Results showed that the particle size of both types of microgel particles had decreased from 2744.07 ±â€¯408.26 nm (egg yolk, EY) to 144.97 ±â€¯3.19 nm (PLA2 hydrolyzed egg yolk microgel particles, PYM) and 535.07 ±â€¯46.07 nm (egg yolk microgel particles hydrolyzed by PLA2, YMP), from 736.24 ±â€¯34.61 nm (EG) to 182.76 ±â€¯4.12 nm (PLA2 hydrolyzed egg yolk granules microgel particles, PGM) and 443.98 ±â€¯27.09 nm (egg yolk granules microgel particles hydrolyzed by PLA2, GMP). Besides, their interfacial adsorption abilities were significantly improved, reflected in the increase values in overrun, from161.90 % ±â€¯9.84 % (EY) to 269.64 % ±â€¯16.73 % (PMY) and 307.20 % ±â€¯16.09 % (YMP), from 189.21 % ±â€¯5.02 % (EG) to 280.38 % ±â€¯36.05 % (PGM) and 261.91 % ±â€¯34.03 % (GMP). Their structural properties showed higher stabilities after treatments. When the microgel particles are applied to cakes, the specific volume was increased from 2.05 ±â€¯0.1 mL/g (EY) to 2.25 ±â€¯0.13 mL/g (PYM) and 2.45 ±â€¯0.03 mL/g (YPM), and from 2.00 ±â€¯0.09 mL/g (EG) to 2.51 ±â€¯0.13 mL/g (PGM) and 2.75 ±â€¯0.21 mL/g (GMP), respectively. The hardness and chewiness were reduced with both types of microgel particles from egg yolk components, which indicated their potential value as edible foam stabilizers in the baking industry.
