RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Xin-yi-san herbal decoction (XYS) is commonly used to treat patients with allergic rhinitis in Taiwan. Theophylline is primarily oxidized with high affinity by human cytochrome P450 (CYP)1A2, and has a narrow therapeutic index. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the inhibition of human CYP1A2-catalyzed theophylline oxidation (THO) by XYS and its adverse effects in patients. METHODS: Human CYPs were studied in recombinant enzyme systems. The influence of concurrent XYS usage in theophylline-treated patients was retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Among the major human hepatic and respiratory CYPs, XYS inhibitors preferentially inhibited CYP1A2 activity, which determined the elimination and side effects of theophylline. Among the herbal components of XYS decoction, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix contained potent THO inhibitors. Furanocoumarin imperatorin was abundant in XYS and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix decoctions, and non-competitively inhibited THO activity with Ki values of 77‒84 nM, higher than those (20‒52 nM) of fluvoxamine, which clinically interacted with theophylline. Compared with imperatorin, the intestinal bacterial metabolite xanthotoxol caused weaker THO inhibition. Consistent with the potency of the inhibitory effects, the docking analysis generated Gold fitness values in the order-fluvoxamine > imperatorin > xanthotoxol. During 2017‒2018, 2.6 % of 201,093 theophylline users consumed XYS. After inverse probability weighting, XYS users had a higher occurrence of undesired effects than non-XYS users; in particular, there was an approximately two-fold higher occurrence of headaches (odds ratio (OR), 2.14; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.99‒2.30; p < 0.001) and tachycardia (OR, 1.83; 95 % CI, 1.21‒2.77; p < 0.05). The incidence of irregular heartbeats increased (OR, 1.36; 95 % CI, 1.07‒1.72; p < 0.05) only in the theophylline users who took a high cumulative dose (≥ 24 g) of XYS. However, the mortality in theophylline users concurrently taking XYS was lower than that in non-XYS users (OR, 0.24; 95 % CI, 0.14‒0.40; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: XYS contains human CYP1A2 inhibitors, and undesirable effects were observed in patients receiving both theophylline and XYS. Further human studies are essential to reduce mortality and to adjust the dosage of theophylline in XYS users.

RESUMO

Fish mint, Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (HCT) is an edible vegetable that has also been used in traditional folk medicines. As both a medicinal herb and a dietary source, HCT has been clinically proven to be a pivotal ingredient in formulas administered to alleviate COVID-19 symptoms. With the increasing market demand for imported materials, ensuring the quality consistency of HCT becomes a significant concern. In this study, the growing time for hydroponically-cultivated HCT with seaweed extract and amino acids added (HCTW) reduced by half compared to conventional soil-cultivated HCT (HCTS). Key quantified components in HCTW, flavonoid glycosides and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives, exhibited a 143% increase over HCTS. These crucial constituents were responsible for possessing antioxidant activity (IC50 < 25 µg/mL) and anti-nitrite oxide production (IC50 < 20 µg/mL). An economically-designed hydroponic system with appropriate additives is proposed to replace HCTS with improvements of growth time, overall production yields, and bioactive qualities.

RESUMO

In the present study, the undescribed schitriterpenoids, kadsujanonols A-I (1-9), and eleven reported compounds (10-20) were isolated from K. japonica L. vines. Their structures of 3,4-seco-schitriterpenoids were elucidated mainly by spectroscopic analyses including 1H-, 13C-, and 2D-NMR, IR, HRESIMS spectra. The spatial configurations were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of kadsujapnonol A (1), 15, 17, and 18, CD data and computational analysis. Furthermore, all isolates were evaluated for the anti-neuroinflammatory activity on LPS-stimulated NO production in BV2 microglial cells and compounds 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13-16, and 18 exposed better or comparable suppression abilities than PDTC. Among them, kadlongilactone B (14) showed the best significant inhibiting ability (IC50 = 0.87 µg/mL) and the effect is through the attenuation of the inflammatory transcription factor p65NF-κB. Preliminary structure-activity relationship revealed that δ-lactone at the side chain and 7-member lactone at C-3/C-4, and 3,4:9,10 ring opening are important.

RESUMO

The Euphorbiaceae plant Euphorbia neriifolia L. is distributed widely in India, Thailand, Southeastern China, and Taiwan and used as a carminative and expectorant to treat several inflammation-related diseases, such as gonorrhoea, asthma, and cancer. In the course of our search for potential anti-inflammatory agents from the titled plant, 11 triterpenes from the stem of E. neriifolia were isolated and reported in our previous endeavor. Given its rich abundance in triterpenoids, the ethanolic extract in this follow-up exploration has led to the isolation of additional eight triterpenes, including six new euphanes-neritriterpenols H and J-N (1 and 3-7)-one new tirucallane, neritriterpenol I (2), and a known compound, 11-oxo-kansenonol (8). Their chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data, including 1D- and 2D NMR, and HRESIMS spectra. The absolute stereochemistry of neritriterpenols was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, ICD spectra, and DP4+ NMR data calculations. Compounds 1-8 were also evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity by using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated IL-6 and TNF-α on RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Intriguingly, the euphane-type triterpenes (1 and 3-8) showed an inhibitory effect on LPS-induced IL-6 but not on TNF-α, while tirucallane-type triterpene 2 showed strong inhibition on both IL-6 and TNF-α.

RESUMO

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to represent a challenge for public health globally since transmission of different variants of the virus does not seem to be effectively affected by the current treatments and vaccines. During COVID-19 the outbreak in Taiwan, the patients with mild symptoms were improved after the treatment with NRICM101, a traditional Chinese medicine formula developed by our institute. Here, we investigated the effect and mechanism of action of NRICM101 on improval of COVID-19-induced pulmonary injury using S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-induced diffuse alveolar damage (DAD) of hACE2 transgenic mice. The S1 protein induced significant pulmonary injury with the hallmarks of DAD (strong exudation, interstitial and intra-alveolar edema, hyaline membranes, abnormal pneumocyte apoptosis, strong leukocyte infiltration, and cytokine production). NRICM101 effectively reduced all of these hallmarks. We then used next-generation sequencing assays to identify 193 genes that were differentially expressed in the S1+NRICM101 group. Of these, three (Ddit4, Ikbke, Tnfaip3) were significantly represented in the top 30 enriched downregulated gene ontology (GO) terms in the S1+NRICM101 group versus the S1+saline group. These terms included the innate immune response, pattern recognition receptor (PRR), and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways. We found that NRICM101 disrupted the interaction of the spike protein of various SARS-CoV-2 variants with the human ACE2 receptor. It also suppressed the expression of cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, MIP-1ß, IP-10, and MIP-1α in alveolar macrophages activated by lipopolysaccharide. We conclude that NRICM101 effectively protects against SARS-CoV-2-S1-induced pulmonary injury via modulation of the innate immune response, pattern recognition receptor, and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways to ameliorate DAD.

RESUMO

Among ten extracts of indigenous medicinal plants, the MeOH extract of Terminalia triptera Stapf. (TTS) showed the most efficient mammalian α-glucosidase inhibition for the first time. The data of screening bioactive parts used indicated that the TTS trunk bark and leaves extracts demonstrated comparable and higher effects compared to acarbose, a commercial anti-diabetic drug, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 181, 331, and 309 µg/mL, respectively. Further bioassay-guided purification led to the isolation of three active compounds from the TTS trunk bark extract and identified as (-)-epicatechin (1), eschweilenol C (2), and gallic acid (3). Of these, compounds 1 and 2 were determined as novel and potent mammalian α-glucosidase inhibitors. The virtual study indicated that these compounds bind to α-glucosidase (Q6P7A9) with acceptable RMSD values (1.16-1.56 Å) and good binding energy (DS values in the range of -11.4 to -12.8 kcal/mol) by interacting with various prominent amino acids to generate five and six linkages, respectively. The data of Lipinski's rule of five and absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET)-based pharmacokinetics and pharmacology revealed that these purified compounds possess anti-diabetic drug properties, and the compounds are almost not toxic for human use. Thus, the findings of this work suggested that (-)-epicatechin and eschweilenol C are novel potential mammalian α-glucosidase inhibitor candidates for type 2 diabetes treatment.

RESUMO

The spirohydantoin-containing cucurbitane-type triterpenoid, kaguacidine A (1), was isolated and purified from 95% ethanol extract of vines of Momordica charantia L. (Cucurbitaceae). Its unprecedented chemical structure, a spirohydantoin substituent at C-23 of cucurbitane, was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including HRESIMS, IR, optical rotation, 1 D- and 2 D-NMR spectra. The possible biosynthetic pathway is deduced and may be attributed to the metabolic activity of microbial symbionts in M. charantia L. Compound 1 was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity against LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 cells and anti-proliferative activity against four cancer cell lines, including HEp-2, MCF-7, Hep-G2, and WiDr. Compound 1 showed moderate anti-inflammatory activity with an IC50 value of 18.5 ± 0.4 µg/mL and weak anti-proliferative activity against MCF-7, HEp-2, Hep-G2, and WiDr with IC50 values of >40, 33.8 ± 0.6, 31.0 ± 0.7, and 27.0 ± 0.7 µM, respectively.

RESUMO

Mesona procumbens Hemseley is a well-known traditional herbal medicine used for heat-related ailments. In Taiwan, boiled extracts of M. procumbens are also used as desserts called grass jelly. In this study, the hexane extract from 75% EtOH of M. procumbens showed potent activities on inhibition of E. coli ß-glucuronidase (eßG) and NO production and cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and HepG2 cancer cell lines. Furthermore, using various flash columns and HPLC chromatography on the bioactive layer led to the isolation of twelve compounds (1-12), including a new ent-kaurene, mesokaurol A (1), and a new germacrene derivative, mesogermapene A (2). Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, especially 2 D NMR and mass data. Biological assays showed that compound 9 (linolenic acid) had specific activity on inhibition of eßG (68.27%) at 100 µg/mL but was non-inhibitory to human ß-glucuronidase. Compound 1 possessed significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 (EC50 = 9.76 µM) and HepG2 (EC50 = 8.64 µM) cancer cell lines.

RESUMO

Mesona procumbens Hemsley is a plant conventionally processed to provide popular food materials and herbal medicines in Asia. In this study, six triterpene acids, including five new ones (mesonaic acids D-H, 1-5), and one proximadiol-type sesquiterpene (7) were isolated from the methanolic extract of the air-dried M. procumbens. Chemical structures of 1‒7 were established by spectroscopic methods, especially 2D NMR techniques (1H-1H COSY, HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY) and HRESIMS. Concerning their biological activities, compounds 1, 2, 6, and 7 were examined manifesting high inhibition toward the pro-inflammatory NO production with EC50 values ranging from 12.88 to 21.21 µM, outrunning the positive control quercetin (24.12 µM). The mesoeudesmol B (7) identified from M. procumbens is the very first example, which exhibited high anti-inflammatory activity diminishing the level of the lipopolysaccharide-induced NO in RAW264.7 macrophage cells, thereby suppressing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 and the level of two critical downstream inflammatory mediators iNOS and COX-2.

RESUMO

Hybrid natural products produced via mixed biosynthetic pathways are unique and often surprise one with unexpected medicinal properties in addition to their fascinating structural complexity/diversity. In view of chemical structures, hybridization is a way of diversifying natural products usually through dimerization of two similar or dissimilar subcomponents through a C-C or N-C covalent linkage. Here, we report four structurally attractive diterpene-alkaloid conjugates polyalongarins A-D (1-4), clerodane-containing aporphine and proaporphine alkaloids, the first of its kind from the barks of Taiwanese Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.) Thwaites var. pendula. In addition to conventional spectroscopic analysis, single crystal X-ray crystallography was employed to determine the chemical structures and stereo-configurations of 1. Compounds 1-4 were subsequently subjected to in vitro antiviral examination against DENV2 by evaluating the expression level of the NS2B protein in DENV2-infected Huh-7 cells. These compounds display encouraging anti-DENV2 activity with superb EC50 (2.8-6.4 µM) and CC50 values (50.4-200 µM). The inhibitory mechanism of 1-4 on NS2B was further explored drawing on in-silico molecular docking analysis. Based on calculated binding affinities and predicted interactions between the functional groups of 1-4 and the allosteric-site residues of the DENV2 NS2B-NS3 protease, our analysis concludes that the clerodane-aporphine/proaporphine-type hybrids are novel and effective DENV NS2B-NS3 protease inhibitors.

RESUMO

The global COVID-19 pandemic remains a critical public health threat, as existing vaccines and drugs appear insufficient to halt the rapid transmission. During an outbreak from May to August 2021 in Taiwan, patients with severe COVID-19 were administered NRICM102, which was a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula developed based on its predecessor NRICM101 approved for treating mild cases. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of NRICM102 in ameliorating severe COVID-19-related embolic and fibrotic pulmonary injury. NRICM102 was found to disrupt spike protein/ACE2 interaction, 3CL protease activity, reduce activation of neutrophils, monocytes and expression of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8), chemokines (MCP-1, MIP-1, RANTES) and proinflammatory receptor (TLR4). NRICM102 also inhibited the spread of virus and progression to embolic and fibrotic pulmonary injury through reducing prothrombotic (vWF, PAI-1, NET) and fibrotic (c-Kit, SCF) factors, and reducing alveolar type I (AT1) and type II (AT2) cell apoptosis. NRICM102 may exhibit its protective capability via regulation of TLRs, JAK/STAT, PI3K/AKT, and NET signaling pathways. The study demonstrates the ability of NRICM102 to ameliorate severe COVID-19-related embolic and fibrotic pulmonary injury in vitro and in vivo and elucidates the underlying mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Viral- and host-targeted traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulae NRICM101 and NRICM102 were administered to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 during the mid-2021 outbreak in Taiwan. We report the outcomes by measuring the risks of intubation or admission to intensive care unit (ICU) for patients requiring no oxygen support, and death for those requiring oxygen therapy. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study retrieved data of 840 patients admitted to 9 hospitals between May 1 and July 26, 2021. After propensity score matching, 302 patients (151 received NRICM101 and 151 did not) and 246 patients (123 received NRICM102 and 123 did not) were included in the analysis to assess relative risks. RESULTS: During the 30-day observation period, no endpoint occurred in the patients receiving NRICM101 plus usual care while 14 (9.27%) in the group receiving only usual care were intubated or admitted to ICU. The numbers of deceased patients were 7 (5.69%) in the group receiving NRICM102 plus usual care and 27 (21.95%) in the usual care group. No patients receiving NRICM101 transitioned to a more severe status; NRICM102 users were 74.07% less likely to die than non-users (relative risk= 25.93%, 95% confidence interval 11.73%-57.29%). CONCLUSION: NRICM101 and NRICM102 were significantly associated with a lower risk of intubation/ICU admission or death among patients with mild-to-severe COVID-19. This study provides real-world evidence of adopting broad-spectrum oral therapeutics and shortening the gap between outbreak and effective response. It offers a new vision in our preparation for future pandemics.

RESUMO

The dried root of Ampelopsis japonica (Thunb.) Makino (A. japonica.) is a traditional medicine used to treat fever, pain, and wound healing. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antityrosinase, and antimelanogenic activities. In this paper, we used different solvent extracts from the root of A. japonica to determine their antioxidant activity. Acetone extract showed relatively strong antioxidant properties by 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide radical scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. In addition, these extracts also showed significant α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities. Acetone extract significantly inhibited α-glucosidase with an IC50 value of 8.30 ± 0.78 µg/mL, and ethanol extract remarkably inhibited AChE with an IC50 value of 37.08 ± 7.67 µg/mL. Using HPLC analysis and comparison with the chemical composition of various solvent extracts, we isolated seven active compounds and assessed their antioxidant, anti-α-glucosidase, and anti-AChE activities. Catechin (1), gallic acid (2), kaempferol (3), quercetin (4), resveratrol (6), and epicatechin (7) were the main antioxidant components in the root of A. japonica. According to the results of DPPH, ABTS, and superoxide radical scavenging assays, these isolates showed stronger antioxidant capacity than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Moreover, 1, 3, 4, euscaphic acid (5), 6, and 7 also expressed stronger anti-α-glucosidase activity than the positive control acarbose, and all the isolated compounds had a good inhibitory effect on AChE. Molecular docking models and hydrophilic interactive modes for AChE assays suggest that 1 and 5 exhibit unique anti-AChE potency. This study indicates that A. japonica and its active extracts and components may be a promising source of natural antioxidants, α-glucosidase, and AChE inhibitors.

RESUMO

Euphorbia neriifolia L. is widely distributed in India, Thailand, and China and has been used to treat diseases such as rotten sores and asthma as well as for its antidiabetic and anticancer effects. In this study, seven undescribed triterpenes, including six euphanes, neritriterpenols A-B and D-G, and a tirucallane, neritriterpenol C, together with four known triterpenes, were isolated from ethanolic extracts of E. neriifolia stems. Their structures with absolute configurations were determined through detailed spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR data analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, ECD spectra, and DP4+ NMR data calculations as well as Mo2(OAc)4-induced ECD analysis. Furthermore, preliminarily evaluation of the anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects of the isolated triterpenes leads to the structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies implying that the unsaturated functional group at the end of the C17 side chain on euphane-type triterpenes may be correlated with the increase of anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities.

RESUMO

Four novel triterpene glycosides, taimordisins A-D (1-4), were discovered from fresh fruits of Taiwanese Momordica charantia. The chemical framework and relative stereochemistry of these four natural products were isolated, purified, and determined by using various separation and spectroscopy techniques. Each of them features a unique bicyclic-fused or trifuso-centro-fused ring system. Notably, 1 and 2 are cucurbitane-based compounds possessing a new C-24 and C-2″ carbon-carbon linkage with 5-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-4H-pyran-4-one and 6-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-4H-pyran-3,4,4-triol units, respectively, and represented an unprecedented molecular skeleton. In terms of biosynthesis, they all originate from a common precursor 3-hydroxycucurbita-5,24-dien-19-al-7,23-di-O-ß-glucopyranoside. Of two sugar moieties, the one at 23-O-ß-glucopyranoside grants each individual congener uniqueness likely through microbial symbiont-mediated intramolecular transformation into two major types of furo[2,3-b]pyranone and furo[3,2-c]pyranone derivatives. These new products possess desirable anti-inflammatory biological activities in addition to being generally regarded as safe.

RESUMO

Crataegus pinnatifida is used to treat various diseases, including indigestion, congestive heart failure, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and myocardial dysfunction. We evaluated antioxidant and anti-α-glucosidase activities of various solvent extracts and major bioactive components from the fruit of C. pinnatifida. Ethyl acetate extracts showed potent antioxidant activities with IC50 values of 23.26 ± 1.97 and 50.73 ± 8.03 µg/mL, respectively, in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays. Acetone extract exhibited significant anti-α-glucosidase activity with IC50 values of 42.35 ± 2.48 µg/mL. HPLC analysis was used to examine and compare the content of active components in various solvent extracts. We isolated four active compounds and evaluated their antioxidant and anti-α-glucosidase properties. Among the isolated compounds, chlorogenic acid and hyperoside showed potential antioxidant activities in ABTS and superoxide radical scavenging assays. Moreover, hyperoside also displayed stronger anti-α-glucosidase activity than other isolates. The molecular docking model and the hydrophilic interactive mode of anti-α-glucosidase assay revealed that hyperoside might have a higher antagonistic effect than positive control acarbose. The present study suggests that C. pinnatifida and its active extracts and components are worth further investigation and might be expectantly developed as the candidates for the treatment or prevention of oxidative stress-related diseases and hyperglycemia.

RESUMO

A novel chromone analogue, phyllomakin A (1), and a new flavonolignan, (-)-quiquelignan C (2), along with 18 phenolic and 2 triterpenoids, were isolated from the leaves of Phyllostachys makinoi Hayata. The structures of 1-22 were elucidated by an application of various spectroscopic analyses (1D & 2D NMR and MS) and compared with reported data. A biological evaluation showed that compound 3 had very potent anti-NO production activity (IC50 = 4.80 µM), while compounds 2, 6, 11, and 15 showed moderate inhibitory effects (IC50 = 10.19, 13.26, 13.56, and 10.96 µM, respectively) without affecting cell viability at 20 µM.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Medicinal ink is used as a traditional topical medicine for treating inflammatory diseases via detoxification, relieving pain, hemostasis, and reducing swelling. However, the effect of medicinal ink on the inhibition of inflammatory responses and the underlying molecular mechanism remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory function of water extract of medical ink (WEMI) and elucidate its active mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell viability was assessed using crystal violet staining assay. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were detected by ELISA. Nitric oxide (NO) production was measured by Griess assay. The activation of inflammatory signaling molecules stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was evaluated by assessing levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), phosphorylated Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) using Western blot assay. RESULTS: Water extract of medical ink (WEMI) did not present cytotoxic effect on murine macrophage Raw264.7 cells. High dosage of WEMI slightly rescued LPS-suppressed cell viability of Raw264.7 cells. WEMI did not induce NO production or IL-6 secretion, though WEMI significantly induced secretion of TNF-α on Raw264.7 cells not stimulated with LPS. On the other hand, LPS effectively stimulated inflammation on Raw264.7 cells; however, WEMI dramatically reduced LPS-induced NO production. WEMI alleviated LPS-stimulated IL-6 secretion but did not affect the content of TNF-α. In addition, WEMI effectively reduced expression of iNOS by abolishing LPS-mediated phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 but not TLR4-mediated NF-κB and MAPK molecules. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that WEMI targets of the JAK2/STAT3-mediated iNOS expression play a key role in alleviating LPS-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 macrophages. Therefore, medicinal ink may be a potential topical agent for treating fasciitis or synovitis via regulating the immune system.

RESUMO

Phytochemical investigation of the ethanol extract from wild Momordica charantia vines has resulted in isolation of seven cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, including six undescribed compounds, kuguaovins H‒M, and the known compound, momordicoside K. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR, and MS experiments. The chemical structure of momordicoside K was determined for the first time by X-ray crystallographic analysis and its absolute configuration assigned. The cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines and anti-inflammatory activities on LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages were evaluated. Of the isolates, kaguaovin L exhibited potential cytotoxicity against MCF-7, HEp-2, Hep-G2, and WiDr cancer cell lines and showed moderate anti-NO production activity. In addition, kuguaovins H and J also showed the stimulatory effect of GLP-1 secretion on the murine intestinal secretin tumor cell line (STC-1).
