RESUMO

Twenty core nursing skills have been identified by the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education. Proficiency in these skills is essential for all nursing professions, and many educational strategies exist to develop these skills in nursing students, including the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). To date, no study on the effects of the OSCE on nursing education has been published. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of the OSCE on the core nursing skills of 207 pre-licensure nursing students in Korea. We measured the nursing students' confidence, skills, and knowledge acquisition and retention. A one-way analysis of variance and Fisher's least significant difference were used for data analysis. Among the four nursing areas (fall, transfusion, pre-operative, and post-operative), students demonstrated the highest confidence level scores in pre-operative nursing. On the OSCE, students scored the highest in transfusion nursing. Significant differences were found between prior knowledge, knowledge acquisition, and retention. Our findings confirm that the OSCE, after lectures and core nursing skill practice, improved the retention of nursing students' knowledge. Therefore, this program can positively influence nursing students' knowledge level, and implementing the OSCE can strengthen students' clinical competency.

RESUMO

The timely delivery of drugs to specific locations in the body is imperative to ensure the efficacy of treatment. This study introduces a portable facial device that can deliver drugs efficiently using iontophoresis. Two types of power supplies-direct current and pulse ionization supplies-were manufactured by injection molding. Electrical stimulation elements, which contained Ag metal wires, were woven into facial mask packs. The diffusion phenomenon in the skin and iontophoresis were numerically modeled. Injection molding was simulated before the device was manufactured. Analysis using rhodamine B demonstrated a remarkable increase in the moisture content of the skin and effective absorption of the drug under an applied electric field upon the application of iontophoresis. The proposed concept and design constitute a new method of achieving effective drug absorption with wearable devices.

RESUMO

In Korea, about 3000 qualified male nurses enter the clinical nursing field annually; however, they face challenges in long-term job retention in general hospitals. Therefore, this study characterized the work and life experiences of mid-career male nurses engaged in clinical nursing care. Participants were nine registered nurses with a minimum of five years' work experience in a general hospital in Korea. Data were collected through face-to-face, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. A phenomenological qualitative design was used with Colaizzi's data analysis method. Three categories, eight theme clusters, and seventeen themes were revealed. The three categories were "limitations and adaptation to work performance", "interpersonal difficulties and coping", and "facing reality and preparing for the future". Findings suggested that mid-career male nurses were considering transitioning to other job roles. These findings help clarify the clinical work experience of mid-career male nurses and their difficulties with job retention. The results provide basic data that may inform the design of policies to practically support male nurses in preserving their careers.

RESUMO

Nursing handover facilitates the continuity of nursing and ensures patient safety and quality of care. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a handover education program by assessing handover knowledge, self-efficacy, and handover performance competency. A group pretest-post-test quasi-experimental design was used. Thirty 4th-year Korean nursing students participated in a handover education program comprising a lecture and simulation training using a high-fidelity simulator. The average level of handover knowledge was 4.63 ± 1.61 before the program and 5.83 ± 0.95 after (t = -3.71, p = 0.001). Meanwhile, the average self-efficacy score was 3.35 ± 0.57 before the program and 3.90 ± 0.60 after (t = -5.65, p < 0.001). Further, the average handover performance competency was 1.75 ± 0.25 before the program and 2.37 ± 0.21 after (t = -12.08, p < 0.001). The simulation-based handover education intervention was effective in improving knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance competency of nursing students. This intervention can provide an effective method of improving nursing students' handover skills prior to entering clinical practice.

RESUMO

This study investigates whether Pilates and yoga lead people to adopt generally health-promoting lifestyle elements and feel better about their physical and mental fitness. To this end, we designed an 8 week exercise program of Pilates and yoga reviewed by veteran practitioners and conducted an experimental study through which we collected the data from 90 volunteered adult subjects between ages 30 and 49 (mean age = 35.47), equally represented by women and men without previous experience with Pilates or yoga. In the 8 week long experiment, we assigned the subjects to three groups, where subjects in the two exercise groups regularly took part in either Pilates or yoga classes, and the control group participated in neither exercise classes. All participants completed two surveys, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP II) and the Health Self-Rating Scale (HSRS), before and after their assigned program. In our analysis of pre- and post-treatment differences across the three groups, we ran ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Sheffé test, implemented using SPSS PASW Statistics 18.00. Our results indicate that Pilates and yoga groups exhibited a higher engagement in health-promoting behaviors than the control group after the program. Subjective health status, measured with HSRS, also improved significantly among Pilates and yoga participants compared to those in the control group after the program. The supplementary analysis finds no significant gender-based difference in these impacts. Overall, our results confirm that Pilates and yoga help recruit health-promoting behaviors in participants and engender positive beliefs about their subjective health status, thereby setting a positive reinforcement cycle in motion. By providing clear evidence that the promotion of Pilates or yoga can serve as an effective intervention strategy that helps individuals change behaviors adverse to their health, this study offers practical implications for healthcare professionals and public health officials alike.

RESUMO

With the expanding use of polymers in modern our lives, there is an increasing need to manufacture advanced engineering polymeric parts in a systematic and inexpensive way. Herein, we developed an organic inorganic hybrid composite material with excellent mechanical properties by enhancing the dispersion and moldability of fillers. For this, we prepared and analyzed the physical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)/aluminum nanoparticle composites. Al nanoparticles of various sizes (20 nm and 40 nm) and concentrations (3, 6, 9, and 12 wt.%) were employed. The mechanical properties of the prepared composites were measured using a universal testing machine. Rheological and thermal analyses for the composites were carried out with use of a rheometer and a differential thermal calorimeter (DSC). We also conducted optical, chemical, electrical, and morphological property studies of the samples in order to help design and produce high-performance engineering products.

RESUMO

Here, we propose a novel and simple method to efficiently capture the diffusion of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran from a biocompatible substance and load the drug only to the tip of DNA microneedles. A dispensing and suction method was chosen to fabricate the designed microneedles with efficient amounts of FITC as the drug model. Importantly, the vacuum process, which could influence the capturing of FITC diffusion from the tip, was evaluated during the manufacturing process. In addition, the simulations were consistent with the experimental results and showed apparent diffusion. Moreover, dextrans of different molecular weights labeled with FITC were chosen to fabricate the tip of microneedles for demonstrating their applicability. Finally, a micro-jetting system with a micro-nozzle (diameter: 80 µm) was developed to achieve the accurate and rapid loading of small amounts of FITC using the anti-diffusion and micro-jetting methods. Our method not only uses a simple and fast manufacturing process, but also fabricates the tips of microneedles more efficiently with FITC compared with the existing methods. We believe that the proposed method is essential for the clinical applications of the microneedle drug delivery platform.

RESUMO

Attempts have been made to bring eco-friendly biomaterials into high-end electronic devices that require both high performance and durability. Polysaccharides, glycosidically linked monosaccharide units, are of particular interest because they serve as a promising material, owing to their environmentally friendly and adaptable features. We used a carbonized polysaccharide eco-material encompassing nanoparticles and chitosan to study the carrier-transport behavior of ß-glucosic materials. Chitosan composites incorporating nanoparticles were prepared and then carbonized to control the crystal structure of the material. Three kinds of metal-insulator-metal devices were fabricated using carbonized materials, and their carrier-transport properties were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of cellulose nano-whiskers (CNWs) into chitosan leads to a more ordered carbon structure, increasing the charge transport in the carbonized material. We anticipate that carbonizing nanoparticle dispersed green composites provides a new pathway for the development of sustainable and environmentally benign material systems.

RESUMO

A multifunctional system comprised of hyaluronic acid microneedles was developed as an effective transdermal delivery platform for rapid local delivery. The microneedles can regulate the filling amount on the tip, by controlling the concentration of hyaluronic acid solution. Ultrasonication induces dissolution of the HA microneedles via vibration of acoustic pressure, and AC iontophoresis improves the electrostatic force-driven diffusion of HA ions and rhodamine B. The effect of ultrasound on rhodamine release was analyzed in vitro using a gelatin hydrogel. The frequency and voltage dependence of the AC on the ion induction transfer was also evaluated experimentally. The results showed that the permeability of the material acts as a key material property. The delivery system based on ultrasonication and iontophoresis in microneedles increases permeation, thus resulting in shorter initial delivery time than that required by delivery systems based on passive or ultrasonication alone. This study highlights the significance of the combination between ultrasonic waves and iontophoresis for improving the efficiency of the microneedles, by shortening the reaction duration. We anticipate that this system can be extended to macromolecular and dependence delivery, based on drug response time.

RESUMO

In this study, a combined system of microneedles and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been developed for drug delivery. A triboelectric device, which converts mechanical energy into alternating current (AC), was chosen to replace the electrophoresis (EP) effect. To directly generate triboelectricity from salmon deoxyribonucleic acid (SDNA)-based microneedles, a triboelectric series of SDNA film and chargeable polymers (polyimide and Teflon) was studied. The electrical output of the two charged polymers was compared to find a material that could be highly charged with SDNA. The electrical output was also compared as a function of the concentration of a drug embedded in the SDNA film, and the results confirmed that drug intercalation affected the carrier diffusion. The mechanical strength of the microneedles was assessed by histological analysis of their penetration into porcine cadaver skin. Furthermore, the output voltage of a system incorporating microneedles and TENG in cadaver skin, and in vitro drug release into gelatin were evaluated to examine potential application as an electrically active drug delivery system. The electrical output voltage of this system was ∼95 V. The mechanism of triboelectric perturbation to the skin has also been discussed. The system developed in this work is a new, facile approach toward effective drug delivery that replaces the existing EP method and expands the application of TENGs.

RESUMO

We explored surface characteristics of polycarbonate substrates which were subjected to proton and nitrogen ion beams. Curved plates designed for a plastic window of a cell phone were fabricated using injection molding, and the process was simulated numerically. Different energy densities of proton and nitrogen ion beams were applied in this study. The physical and chemical properties of the samples were evaluated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nanoindentation, residual stress, and electrical analyses. Results revealed that the irradiation of proton and nitrogen ion beams led to changes in the chemical structures and energy levels of the polymer molecules. Furthermore, physical properties, such as hardness, glass transition temperature, transmittance, and electrical conductivity, were remarkably varied.

RESUMO

Although histone modifications are associated with gene activities, studies of their causal relationships have been difficult. For this purpose, we developed an inducible system integrating dCas9-based targeting and chemically induced proximity technologies to allow small molecule induced recruitment of P300 acetyltransferase and the acetylation of H3K27 at precise gene loci in cells. Employing the new technique, we elucidated the temporal order of histone acetylation and gene activation, as well as the stability of the installed histone modification.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling is not only a risk factor for falls, but it is also an important clinical predictor of functional decline in older adults. This study identified sex differences in fear of falling and related factors in older adults with low grip strength. METHODS: The data of 902 older adults from the 2012 Korean National Survey, conducted as a research project by the Korea Employment Information Service, were analyzed. Grip strength, activities of daily living, cognitive function, depressive symptoms, and fear of falling were assessed. Multiple regression analysis was performed by a simultaneous data entry method. RESULTS: Fear of falling was greater in older women with low grip strength than in their male equivalents (P<0.001). Regression analysis showed that age, fall experience within the previous 2 yr, activities of daily living, and depressive symptoms collectively accounted for 15.3% (P<0.001) of the variance among men. Meanwhile, age, fall experience within the previous 2 yr, grip strength, activities of daily living, and depressive symptoms collectively accounted for 13.4% (P<0.001) of the variance among women. CONCLUSION: Thus, the predictors of fear of falling differ between older men and women with low grip strength. Therefore, sex differences must be considered when developing intervention strategies for reducing fear of falling in this demographic.

RESUMO

In this review, we discuss the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) effect model analysis of organic devices and time-resolved optical second harmonic generation (TR-EFISHG) measurement that is available for directly probing carrier motion in organic semiconductor devices. Using these, we show that organic field effect transistor as well organic double-layer device operation is analyzed well, and we can make clear the mechanism of these organic devices' operation. Finally, we conclude that the dielectric physics approach using the MW model analysis and the TR-EFISHG experiment is useful to study carrier transport mechanism of organic devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psychological stressors may cause affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety, by altering expressions of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), serotonin (5-HT), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the brain. This study investigated the effects of essential oil from Asarum heterotropoides (EOAH) on depression-like behaviors and brain expressions of CRF, 5-HT, and TH in mice challenged with stress. METHODS: Male ICR mice received fragrance inhalation of EOAH (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g) for 3 h in the special cage capped with a filter paper before start of the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). The duration of immobility was measured for the determination of depression-like behavior in the FST and TST. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine as positive control was administered at a dose of 15 mg/kg (i.p.) 30 min before start of behavioral testing. Immunoreactivities of CRF, 5-HT, and TH in the brain were also measured using separate groups of mice subjected to the FST. RESULTS: EOAH at higher doses (1.0 and 2.0 g) reduced immobility time in the FST and TST. In addition, EOAH at a dose of 1.0 g significantly reduced the expected increases in the expression of CRF positive neurons in the paraventricular nucleus and the expression of TH positive neurons in the locus coeruleus, and the expected decreases of the 5-HT positive neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus. CONCLUSION: These results provide strong evidence that EOAH effectively inhibits depression-like behavioral responses, brain CRF and TH expression increases, and brain 5-HT expression decreases in mice challenged with stress.

RESUMO

4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA), one of the well-known phenolic compounds in diverse plants, displayed a significant inhibition in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) angiogenesis assay. HBA was shown to contain an anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced air pouch model in rats and acetic acid-induced permeability model in mice. Anti-nociceptive activity of HBA was also assessed using the acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. HBA was able to suppress production of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 macrophages. In the macrophages, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was diminished by HBA. Taken together, HBA possesses anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activity possibly via its down-regulating activity on NO production, which may be partly responsible for the pharmacological efficacy of several folkloric medicines.

RESUMO

This study aimed to elucidate anti-angiogenic activity of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica that has been widely used in folk medicine. The methanol extract (UDE) of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica concentration-dependently displayed a strong inhibition in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) angiogenesis. The n-butanol fraction of UDE and subsequent 30% MeOH subfraction were identified to be most responsible for the anti-angiogenic activity.

RESUMO

Gastrodia elata Blume rhizome has been traditionally used as a folk medicine for centuries in Oriental countries. Its ethanol extract (GEE) and subsequent fractions were used to evaluate anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and related activities of Gastrodia elata. GEE potently inhibited angiogenesis in the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay, and its n-butanol fraction (BuOH) exerted the higher inhibitory effect. In a dose-dependent manner, GEE inhibited vascular permeability induced by acetic acid. GEE and its BuOH fraction exerted an inhibitory activity on exudate production, leukocyte migration and nitric oxide (NO) level in rat air-pouch model. GEE caused a dose-dependent inhibition of acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing in mice. In addition, GEE inhibited NO production and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) upon stimulation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW264.7 macrophages. In summary, we demonstrate some novel pharmacological activities of Gastrodia elata, such as anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, and in vivo and in vitro inhibitory activity on NO production.

RESUMO

The electric field distribution in electronic devices, particularly in the organic devices, was visualized by the optical second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging technique on the basis of electric field induced SHG (EFISHG). Two-dimensional SHG images from organic field effect transistor using pentacene were taken with a cooled CCD camera, and the SHG images showed the electric field was successfully visualized with a resolution of 1 mum. The SHG imaging method provides us a novel technique for visualizing the electric field distribution in actual devices under device operation.
