Previous studies on temperature and infectious diseases primarily focused on individual disease types, yielding inconsistent conclusions. This study collected monthly data on notifiable infectious disease cases and meteorological variables across 7 provinces in China from 2011 to 2019. A distributed lag nonlinear model was used to evaluate the association between ambient temperature and infectious diseases within each province, and random meta-analysis was applied to evaluate the pooled effect. Extreme hot temperature (the 97.5th percentile) was positively associated with the risk of respiratory infectious diseases with the relative risk (RR) of 1.45 (95%CI: 1.01-2.08). Conversely, extreme cold temperature (the 2.5th percentile) was negatively associated with intestinal infectious diseases and zoonotic diseases and vector-borne diseases, reporting RRs of 0.43 (95%CI: 0.30-0.60) and 0.46 (95%CI: 0.38-0.57), respectively. This study described the nonlinear association between ambient temperature and infectious diseases with different transmission routes, informing comprehensive prevention and control strategies for temperature-related infectious diseases.

Lead poisoning is globally concerning, yet limited testing hinders effective interventions in most countries. We aimed to create annual maps of county-specific blood lead levels in China from 1980 to 2040 using a machine learning model. Blood lead data from China were sourced from 1180 surveys published between 1980 and 2022. Additionally, regional statistical figures for 15 natural and socioeconomic variables were obtained or estimated as predictors. A machine learning model, using the random forest algorithm and 2973 generated samples, was created to predict county-specific blood lead levels in China from 1980 to 2040. Geometric mean blood lead levels in children (i.e., age 14 and under) decreased significantly from 104.4 µg/L in 1993 to an anticipated 40.3 µg/L by 2040. The number exceeding 100 µg/L declined dramatically, yet South Central China remains a hotspot. Lead exposure is similar among different groups, but overall adults and adolescents (i.e., age over 14), females, and rural residents exhibit slightly lower exposure compared to that of children, males, and urban residents, respectively. Our predictions indicated that despite the general reduction, one-fourth of Chinese counties rebounded during 2015-2020. This slower decline might be due to emerging lead sources like smelting and coal combustion; however, the primary factor driving the decline should be the reduction of a persistent source, legacy gasoline-derived lead. Our approach innovatively maps lead exposure without comprehensive surveys.

RESUMO

The Hunger Games Search (HGS) is an innovative optimizer that operates without relying on gradients and utilizes a population-based approach. It draws inspiration from the collaborative foraging activities observed in social animals in their natural habitats. However, despite its notable strengths, HGS is subject to limitations, including inadequate diversity, premature convergence, and susceptibility to local optima. To overcome these challenges, this study introduces two adjusted strategies to enhance the original HGS algorithm. The first adaptive strategy combines the Logarithmic Spiral (LS) technique with Opposition-based Learning (OBL), resulting in the LS-OBL approach. This strategy plays a pivotal role in reducing the search space and maintaining population diversity within HGS, effectively augmenting the algorithm's exploration capabilities. The second adaptive strategy, the dynamic Rosenbrock Method (RM), contributes to HGS by adjusting the search direction and step size. This adjustment enables HGS to escape from suboptimal solutions and enhances its convergence accuracy. Combined, these two strategies form the improved algorithm proposed in this study, referred to as RLHGS. To assess the efficacy of the introduced strategies, specific experiments are designed to evaluate the impact of LS-OBL and RM on enhancing HGS performance. The experimental results unequivocally demonstrate that integrating these two strategies significantly enhances the capabilities of HGS. Furthermore, RLHGS is compared against eight state-of-the-art algorithms using 23 well-established benchmark functions and the CEC2020 test suite. The experimental results consistently indicate that RLHGS outperforms the other algorithms, securing the top rank in both test suites. This compelling evidence substantiates the superior functionality and performance of RLHGS compared to its counterparts. Moreover, RLHGS is applied to address four constrained real-world engineering optimization problems. The final results underscore the effectiveness of RLHGS in tackling such problems, further supporting its value as an efficient optimization method.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a severe preventable complication among ophthalmic surgical patients. The knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of nurses play a key role in effective VTE prevention. However, little is known about the KAP of ophthalmic nurses' VTE prevention. This study aimed to examine the level of KAP toward VTE prevention among Chinese ophthalmic nurses and to investigate the influencing factors of their VTE practice. Methods: A total of 610 ophthalmic nurses from 17 cities in Hunan and Zhejiang Provinces, China, participated in this study. Data was collected via the Sojump online platform from March to April 2021. A self-administered VTE questionnaire was developed to assess nurses' KAP toward VTE prevention. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of ophthalmic nurses' VTE prevention practice. Results: The scores (correct rates) of ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice were 103.87 ± 20.50 (76.4%), 21.96 ± 2.72, and 48.96 ± 11.23 (81.6%), respectively. The three lowest-scored knowledge items were related to VTE complications, physical prevention, and risk assessment. The three lowest-scored attitude items were related to nurses' training, VTE risk, and patient education. The three lowest-scored practice items were related to the assessment scale, VTE assessment, and patient education. Nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice were significantly correlated with each other. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Hunan Province (B = 2.77, p = 0.006), general hospital (B = 2.97, p = 0.009), outpatient department (B = 3.93, p = 0.021), inpatient department (B = 2.50, p = 0.001), previous VTE prevention training (B = 3.46, p < 0.001), VTE prevention management in hospital (B = 4.93, p < 0.001), better knowledge (B = 0.04, p = 0.038), and positive attitude towards VTE prevention (B = 1.35, p < 0.001) were all significantly and positively associated with higher practice scores in VTE prevention. Conclusions: Our study provided a comprehensive understanding of the ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention, as well as identified specific items in each dimension for improvement. In addition, our study showed multiple factors were associated with ophthalmic nurses' practice in VTE prevention, including environmental factors, training and management, knowledge and attitudes toward VTE prevention. Our findings provide important implications and guidance for future intervention programs to improve the ophthalmic nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention.

BACKGROUND: Essential trace elements (ETEs) are essential nutrients for keeping the nervous system functioning. Associations between ETEs and cognitive function are still inconclusive and limited. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the individual and joint associations between ETEs and cognitive function among older adults. METHODS: A population (N = 2181) at an average age≥ 65 from Yiwu cohort in China was available for this study. Whole blood chromium (Cr), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), consisting of five specific cognitive domains: orientation, registry, attention and calculation, recall, and language and praxis. Linear regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to analyze the individual and joint associations between ETEs and cognitive function. RESULTS: The association between Cr and MMSE score presented an inverted-U shape (Q3 versus Q1: ß = 0.774, 95 % CI: 0.297, 1.250; Q4 versus Q1: ß = 0.481, 95 % CI: 0.006, 0.956); and Cr was especially associated with the registry, recall, and language and praxis. Per IQR (36.32 µg/L) increase of Se was positively associated with the MMSE score (ß = 0.497, 95 % CI: 0.277, 0.717) and all five cognitive domains. The BKMR showed that the dose-response association between Se and cognitive function increased initially and then decreased with increasing Se concentration when fixed the other ETEs in median. ETEs mixture was positively associated with cognitive function, and Se (posterior inclusion probabilities, PIPs = 0.915) was the most important contributor within the ETEs mixture. CONCLUSIONS: The nonlinear association between Cr and cognitive function suggested further exploration of an appropriate concentration range for ETEs. A positive association between mixed ETEs and cognitive function is a reminder that their joint association should be considered. Further prospective studies or intervention studies are warranted to validate our findings in the future.

BACKGROUND: Physical function (PF), such as muscle strength, performing daily activities, has gradually declined with the increase of age, causing the occurrence of disability and diseases burden. Air pollution exposure and physical activity (PA) were both linked to PF. We aimed to explore the individual and joint effects of particulate matter <2.5 µm (PM2.5) and PA on PF. METHODS: A total of 4537 participants and 12,011 observations aged ≥45 years old from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) cohort from 2011 to 2015 were included into the study. PF was assessed by a combined score of four tests, including grip strength, walking speed, sense of balance, and chair standing tests. Air pollution exposure data was from The ChinaHighAirPollutants (CHAP) dataset. The annual PM2.5 exposure for each individual was estimated based on county-level resident addresses. We estimated the volume of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) by quoting metabolic equivalent (MET). Multivariate linear model was conducted for baseline analysis, and linear mixed model with random participant intercepts was constructed for cohort longitudinal analysis. RESULTS: PM2.5 was negatively associated with PF, while PA was positively associated with PF in baseline analysis. In cohort longitudinal analysis, a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 was associated to a 0.025 point (95 % CI: -0.047, -0.003) decrease in PF score, and a 10-MET-h/week increase in PA was related to a 0.004 point (95 % CI: 0.001, 0.008) increase in PF score. The association between PM2.5 and PF decreased by increased PA intensity, and PA reversed the detrimental effects between PM2.5 and PF. CONCLUSION: PA attenuated the association of air pollution with PF at both high and low levels of air pollution, implying that PA may be an effective behavior to reduce the adverse effects of poor air quality on PF.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have reported an association between traffic-related pollution with risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, evidence from prospective studies on the association of walkability and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with MetS is still scarce. We, therefore, aimed to evaluate the association of long-term exposure to NO2 and walkability with hazards of incident MetS. METHODS: A total of 17,965 participants without MetS diagnosed within one year at baseline were included in our study from a population-based prospective cohort in Yinzhou District, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. Participants were followed up by the regional Health Information System (HIS) until December 15, 2021. MetS was defined based on the criteria of Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS2004). We used walkscore tools, calculating with amenity categories and decay functions, and spatial-temporal land-use regression (LUR) models to estimate walkability and NO2 concentrations. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to examine the association of walkability and NO2 with hazards of MetS incidence reporting with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Overall, we followed up 77,303 person-years and identified 4040 incident cases of MetS in the entire cohort. Higher walkability was inversely associated with incident MetS (HR = 0.94, 95 % CI: 0.91-0.99), whereas NO2 was positively associated with MetS incidence (HR = 1.07, 95 %CI: 1.00-1.15) per interquartile range increment in two-exposure models. Furthermore, we found a significant multiplicative interaction between walkability and NO2. Stronger associations were observed for NO2 and incident MetS among men, smokers, drinkers and participants who aged < 60 years and had higher levels of income. CONCLUSION: In summary, we found living in areas with lower walkability and higher concentrations of NO2 were associated with increased incidence of MetS. The beneficial effect of higher walkability may be attenuated by exposure to NO2.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Knowledge of interactions between genetic variants and near-work activities at the onset of myopia can facilitate health education regarding myopia. BACKGROUND: To investigate the interactions between genetic variants (PDE10A, AREG and GABRR1) and near-work activities in the onset of myopia in southeastern Chinese school children. METHODS: A total of 458 non-myopic, grade 1 children aged 6-7 years were included in a 4-year follow-up examination; 409 children were assessed further. Manifest (non-cycloplegic) refraction and axial length (AL) were measured every year, and questionnaires were administered annually to assess information regarding the demographic characteristics of children, near-work activities, outdoor exposure and parental myopia. Oral mucosa was collected in the last year of follow-up, and Sanger sequencing was used to genotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA. RESULTS: The cumulative change in the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) over 4 years was -1.20 ± 1.00 D, and the proportion of children with incident myopia was 42.9%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that an increased amount of time spent doing homework (>2 h/d) was an independent risk factor for incident myopia. The PDE10A rs12206610CT genotype and spending > 5 h/d on near-work activities showed an interaction for incident myopia (OR = 4.29, 95% CI: 1.27-14.53; Pinteraction = 0.02); moreover, the rs12206610CT genotype carriers who used electronic devices for > 1 h/d displayed an increased risk of incident myopia (OR = 3.43, 95% CI: 1.07-11.01; Pinteraction = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS: The rs2206610CT genotype carriers with near-work activities of >5 h/d were more likely to show incident myopia, especially those who used electronic devices >1 h/d. However, interactions between the rs12206610 SNP and near-work activities require further verification in animal models and larger sample cohorts.

BACKGROUND: After millions of years of coevolution, symbiotic microbiota has become an integral part of the host and plays an important role in host immunity, metabolism, and health. Vaccination, as an effective means of preventing infectious diseases, has been playing a vital role in the prevention and control of human and animal diseases for decades. However, so far, minimal is known about the effect of vaccination on fish symbiotic microbiota, especially mucosal microbiota, and its correlation with intestinal metabolism remains unclear. METHODS: Here we reported the effect of an inactivated bivalent Aeromonas hydrophila/Aeromonas veronii vaccine on the symbiotic microbiota and its correlation with the intestinal metabolism of farmed adult Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics. RESULTS: Results showed that vaccination significantly changed the structure, composition, and predictive function of intestinal mucosal microbiota but did not significantly affect the symbiotic microbiota of other sites including gill mucosae, stomach contents, and stomach mucosae. Moreover, vaccination significantly reduced the relative abundance values of potential opportunistic pathogens such as Aeromonas, Escherichia-Shigella, and Acinetobacter in intestinal mucosae. Combined with the enhancement of immune function after vaccination, inactivated bivalent Aeromonas vaccination had a protective effect against the intestinal pathogen infection of tilapia. In addition, the metabolite differential analysis showed that vaccination significantly increased the concentrations of carbohydrate-related metabolites such as lactic acid, succinic acid, and gluconic acid but significantly decreased the concentrations of multiple lipid-related metabolites in tilapia intestines. Vaccination affected the intestinal metabolism of tilapia, which was further verified by the predictive function of intestinal microbiota. Furthermore, the correlation analyses showed that most of the intestinal differential microorganisms were significantly correlated with intestinal differential metabolites after vaccination, confirming that the effect of vaccination on intestinal metabolism was closely related to the intestinal microbiota. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this paper revealed the microbial and metabolic responses induced by inactivated vaccination, suggesting that intestinal microbiota might mediate the effect of vaccination on the intestinal metabolism of tilapia. It expanded the novel understanding of vaccine protective mechanisms from microbial and metabolic perspectives, providing important implications for the potential influence of vaccination on human intestinal microbiota and metabolism. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Metal exposure is suspected to be associated with the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Copper (Cu) is an essential yet toxic trace element in humans. Epidemiological evidence on the association of Cu exposure with CKD remains inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the association of blood Cu and its co-exposure to other metals with CKD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3285 older participants in Zhejiang, China. The whole blood levels of Cu as well as other 10 metals were measured using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). CKD events were defined as the presence of albuminuria or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models were applied to assess the association of Cu with kidney function. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to examine the association of metal interactions with CKD. RESULTS: In logistic models, we found a dose-dependent positive association between blood Cu and the prevalence of CKD. Compared to the lowest quartile of blood Cu, the odds ratio (OR) of CKD in the highest quartile was 1.65 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.25, 2.17), and the ß of eGFR was -1.74 (95% CI: -3.15, -0.34) after adjusting for multiple covariates. The positive linear dose-response association was found between blood Cu and the OR of CKD, and negative linear association was found between Cu and the ß of eGFR. The positive association between blood Cu and CKD risk was stronger at lower level of manganese (Mn) in the BKMR model. CONCLUSION: The whole blood level of Cu was remarkably associated with the risk of CKD and showed positive dose-response relationships in the older Chinese population. The toxicity of Cu on kidney function could be antagonized by the exposure of Mn. These findings shed new light on the potential role of Cu in kidney health.

Blood pressure and pulse pressure (PP) had their own characteristics in the elderly population. This cross-sectional study including 5030 elderly participants was conducted to describe the distribution of blood pressure and wide PP in the elderly population and find influencing factors of wide PP. Wide PP was defined as PP equal to or more than 65 mmHg, and was classified three types as low systolic blood pressure (SBP) and low diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (LSLD), high SBP and low DBP (HSLD), and high SBP and high DBP (HSHD). Using multivariate logistic regression models to analyze the associations of demographic factors, health-related factors and lifestyle factors with different wide PP types. The associations of lifestyles with wide PP by gender were estimated by subgroup analyses. Among 5030 elderly participants, 2727 (54.2%) participants had wide PP. Logistic regression models showed older age (OR = 2.48, 95%CI: 2.14-2.88), female (OR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.07-1.60), not married (OR = 1.26, 95%CI: 1.07-1.49), having chronic diseases (OR = 1.28, 95%CI: 1.09-1.50), current alcohol drinker (OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.11-1.50) were positively associated, and higher body height (OR = .78, 95%CI: .62-.99), higher education level (OR = .60, 95%CI: .43-.82), current smoker (OR = .79, 95%CI: .64-.97) were negatively associated with wide PP. Among three different types of wide PP including LSLD, HSLD, HSHD, these factors had different effects. Subgroup analyses found that only among male, current smoker was negatively associated and current alcohol drinker was positively associated with wide PP.

AIM: To analyse the association of sleep quality with myopia under different genetic risk (GR) levels. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of students aged 9-14y in Wenzhou, China, was conducted. Refraction without cycloplegia and ocular parameters were measured. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Seventeen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were replicated by association analysis and used to compute the GR score (GRS). Possible confounders were assessed by a questionnaire that collected information about the children and their parents. Generalized linear models were used to analyse the sleep quality, the GR, and their interaction effects on the risk of myopia. RESULTS: Out of 1354 children included in this study, 353 (26.07%) had sleep disturbances. The GRS ranged from 4.49 to 12.89 with a mean of 7.74±1.23, and the participants were divided into a low GR group, a moderate GR group and a high GR group according to the GRS quartile. In the generalized linear model, the children with sleep disturbances and high GR had a higher risk of myopia than those without sleep disturbances and with low GR (OR=1.59, 95%CI: 1.12-2.25; OR=1.88, 95%CI: 1.23-2.88, respectively). Compared to those with low GR and SDs, children with high GR with or without SDs had a higher risk of myopia (OR=4.88, 95%CI: 2.03-11.71; OR=1.70, 95%CI: 1.06-2.72, respectively). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of sleep disturbances in elementary school students in Wenzhou was 26.07%. There is a significant interaction between sleep disturbances and a high GR of myopia, suggesting that a high GR of myopia may increase children's sensitivity to sleep disturbances. This study indicates that children with a high GR of myopia need to achieve adequate sleep duration and excellent sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the differences in optical axial length and close-work activities between only children and children with siblings in Wenzhou. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional population-based study. In total, 2913 school-aged children and their parents in Wenzhou were included as study subjects from April to May 2021. Data regarding the optical axial length, spherical equivalent refraction, number of children in a family, parental myopia, and close-work activities were collected through eye examinations and questionnaires. A multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the number of children in a family and optical axial length. RESULTS: The children were aged 9.80 ± 3.41 years. The overall percentage of children with an axial length > 24 mm was 38.9%, 44.5% in only children and 35.6% in multiples. The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of having an AL > 24 mm were 1.24 times higher in only children than in multiples (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.025-1.480, P = 0.028). Only children were 1.331 times more likely to perform homework > 1 h on weekends than multiples (OR: 1.331, 95% CI: 1.049-1.688, P = 0.019). Only children in upper grades were 1.543 times more likely to perform homework > 1 h on weekends than multiples (OR: 1.543, 95% CI: 1.065-2.235, P = 0.025). Boys who were only children were more likely to attend three or more extracurricular classes for academic subjects than multiples (OR: 1.224, 95% CI: 1.011-1.562, P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Being an only child may be associated with a higher risk of myopia and higher odds of close-work behaviors. Only children, especially those in upper grades, are more likely to spend more time on homework than their peers who are multiples. Only children, especially boys, are more likely to attend extracurricular classes in academic subjects. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial is registered as ChiCTR1900020584 at www.Chictr.org.cn .

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the changes in the prevalence of myopia and its relation to ocular biological parameters, and behaviors among primary school students in China, and understand the prevention and control of myopia. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were performed on 7-9-year-old children in the yrs. 2012 and 2019. In addition, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), axial length (AL), and AL/corneal radius ratio (AL/CR ratio) were collected without cycloplegia. Participants completed detailed questionnaires on behavior related to myopia. RESULTS: Data was collected on 623 children (8.02 ± 0.57 years old) in 2012 and 536 students in 2019 (8.09 ± 0.65 years old). The prevalence of myopia was 37.7% in 2012 and 39.9% in 2019. The SER was -0.25 (0.92) D in 2012 and -0.25 (1.25) in 2019. There was no statistical difference in the prevalence of myopia and SER over the 7 years (all P > 0.05). In 2019, the prevalence of myopia among girls demonstrated an increasing trend (33.8% vs. 37.8%), but there was no statistical difference (P > 0.05). The mean AL and AL/CR ratio of boys were decreasing (all P < 0.05). The proportion of children reading more than 2 h and using digital devices for more than 2 h per day after their classes in the 2019 group both decreased (all P < 0.05). However, the proportion of activities performed outdoors for more than 2 h./day decreased significantly (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Compared with 2012, the prevalence of myopia in primary school students in 2019 was under control, which may be related to the improvement of children's near-work behavior, but there was the problem of insufficient outdoor activity time. In terms of ocular biological parameters, the risk of myopia for boys in 2019 was lower.

AIMS: This study aimed to develop a live attenuated vaccine as an effective approach to prevent streptococcosis in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). METHODS AND RESULTS: We eliminated the virulence factor, sialic acid (Sia) encoded by the neuA-D gene cluster from the Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae, GBS) strain WC1535, to construct Sia-deficient S. agalactiae (ΔSia) mutant by homologous recombination. Results showed that the ΔSia mutant had higher adherence to HEp-2 cells and lower resistance to RAW264.7 cell phagocytosis than the wild-type S. agalactiae. The virulence of the ΔSia mutant to tilapia dramatically decreased with no virulence recovery. The relative percent survivals (RPSs) were 50.00% and 54.50% at 30 days when challenged at the wild-type WC1535 doses of 1.0 × 107 and 5.0 × 107  CFU fish-1 , respectively, via intraperitoneal (IP) injection. The tilapia vaccinated via IP injection with the ΔSia mutant induced strong antibody agglutination titers. The expression of IL-1ß, TNF-α, MHC-Iα, and MHC-IIß could be enhanced in the intestine, spleen, and head kidney for tilapia administered with the ΔSia mutant. CONCLUSIONS: GBS Sia plays a critical role in adherence to HEp-2 cells and resistance to the immune clearance of RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, the ΔSia mutant is a safe, stable, and immunogenic live attenuated vaccine candidate to protect tilapia against GBS infection. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: The results offer more evidence of the importance of Sia in GBS and may be instructive in the control of tilapia streptococcosis.

Importance: Acupoint hot compress during the early postpartum period may benefit patients after a vaginal delivery, but the evidence of this effect is limited. Objective: To assess whether acupoint hot compress involving the abdominal, lumbosacral, and plantar regions could reduce the incidence of postpartum urinary retention, relieve postpartum uterine contraction pain, prevent emotional disorders, and promote lactation. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter randomized clinical trial was conducted at 12 hospitals in China. Pregnant patients were screened for eligibility (n = 13 949) and enrolled after vaginal delivery (n = 1200) between January 17 and August 15, 2021; data collection was completed on August 18, 2021. After vaginal delivery, these participants were randomized 1:1 to either the intervention group or control group. Statistical analysis was based on per-protocol population. Interventions: Participants in the control group received routine postpartum care. Participants in the intervention group received routine postpartum care plus 3 sessions of a 4-hour acupoint hot compress involving the abdominal, lumbosacral, and plantar regions within 30 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours after delivery. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the incidence of postpartum urinary retention, defined as the first urination occurring more than 6.5 hours after delivery and/or use of an indwelling catheter within 72 hours after delivery. The secondary outcomes were postpartum uterine contraction pain intensity (assessed with the visual analog scale [VAS]), depressive symptoms (assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), and lactation conditions (including lactation initiation time, breastfeeding milk volume, feeding mood and times, and newborn weight). Results: Of the 1200 participants randomized, 1085 completed the study (537 in the intervention group and 548 in the control group, with a median [IQR] age of 26.0 [24.0-29.0] years). Participants in the intervention group compared with the control group had significantly decreased incidence of postpartum urinary retention (relative risk [RR], 0.58; 95% CI, 0.35-0.98; P = .03); improved postpartum uterine contraction pain when measured at 6.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [1-2] vs 2 [1-2]; P < .001), 28.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [0-1] vs 1 [1-2]; P < .001), 52.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 1 [0-1] vs 1 [0-1]; P < .001), and 76.5 hours (median [IQR] VAS score, 0 [0-1] vs 0 [0-1]; P = .01) after delivery; reduced depressive symptoms (RR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54-0.98; P = .01); and increased breastfeeding milk volume measured at 28.5, 52.5, and 76.5 hours after delivery. No adverse events occurred in either of the 2 groups. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this trial showed that acupoint hot compress after vaginal delivery decreased postpartum urinary retention, uterine contraction pain, and depressive symptoms and increased breastfeeding milk volume. Acupoint hot compress may be considered as an adjunctive intervention in postnatal care that meets patient self-care needs. The abuse of antibiotics in aquaculture has led to the increasing rate of antibiotic resistance of aquatic bacteria including Aeromonas, which is an increasing threat to environmental and human health. To date, no epidemiological cut-off values (COWT) for Aeromonas spp. have been established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute nor the European Commission on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. In this study, commercially prepared minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test 96-well plates (dry-form plates) were used to determine the MIC of eight antimicrobial agents against 556 Aeromonas strains. The obtained MIC distributions were simulated and analyzed by NRI and ECOFFinder to obtain tentative COWT values for Aeromonas spp. The COWT values of eight kinds of representative antimicrobial agents including trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, doxycycline, neomycin, colistin, florfenicol, enrofloxacin, and ceftazidime for Aeromonas spp. were established and were 0.25, 64/32, 4/2, 8, 4, 1, 0.062/0.125, and 0.5 µg/mL, respectively. Results showed that Aeromonas spp. had a very high proportion of non-wild-type strains to enrofloxacin, florfenicol, and doxycycline, which are the most widely used antimicrobials in aquaculture. The COWT values for Aeromonas spp. obtained in this study can contribute to the final establishment of COWT for Aeromonas spp. internationally.

Bacterial community plays a key role in environmental and ecological processes of river ecosystems. Given the special climatic and geographical conditions, studying the compositional characteristics of microorganisms in highland rivers and the relationship between such microorganisms and water physicochemical factors is important for an in-depth understanding of microbial ecological mechanisms. In the present study, high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate and study the bacterioplankton community of the Huangshui River in the ecotone zone of the Qinghai Plateau and Loess Plateau. The results showed that the Huangshui River had significantly lower alpha diversity than the plain rivers. Despite the similarity in their environmental conditions, the main taxonomic compositions of the bacterial communities were distinct between the Huangshui River and polar regions (the Arctic and Antarctica). Proteobacteria accounted for the largest proportion (30.79-99.98%) of all the sequences, followed by Firmicutes (0-49.38%). Acidiphilium was the most numerous genera, which accounted for 0.03-86.16% of the assigned 16S reads, followed by Acidocella (0-95.9%), both belonging to Alphaproteobacteria. The diverse taxa of potential pathogens, such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Aeromonas, were also identified. A principal coordinates analysis, coupled with a canonical correspondence analysis, showed spatial variations in the bacterial community composition. The water physical properties (e.g., Cr6+, total phosphorus, and CODMn); altitude; and land use (e.g., urban land cover and aquaculture) determined the distribution of the bacterioplankton composition. PICRUSt2 revealed that the overall functional profiles of the bacterial communities in different samples were similar, and our results suggested the potential health risks of water sources in this area. This work provided valuable insight into the composition of the plankton bacterial community and its relationship with the environmental factors in the Huangshui River in the ecotone zone of the Qinghai Plateau and Loess Plateau and a theoretical foundation for ecological health management.

In November 2019, an acute disease outbreak in Australian redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) occurred in a farm in Hubei, China, with a cumulative mortality rate of over 80%. One of the characteristic symptoms of the disease was blisters on the tail. This symptom is also common in diseased Procambarus clarkii every year in this country, but the causative agent has not been determined. This study analyzed the etiological characteristics of this disease. Bacterial isolation and identification combined with high-throughput sequencing analysis were conducted to obtain the microbiota characteristics in the hemolymph, hepatopancreas, and intestines. Results showed that this outbreak was caused by infection from Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii. The underlying cause was stress imposed on crayfish during transferring from outdoor pond to indoor pond because of temperature drops. Aeromonas infection caused remarkable changes in the structure of the microbial composition in the hemolymph, hepatopancreas, and intestines of the crayfish. The abundance of Aeromonas in the hemolymph of the sick crayfish was as high as 99.33%. In particular, KEGG metabolic pathway analysis showed that some antibiotic synthesis, enterobactin biosynthesis, and myo-inositol degradation pathways were abundant in healthy crayfish hemolymphs, which may be the mechanism of maintaining crayfish health. Conversely, inhibition of these pathways led to the disorder of microbiota structure, finally leading to the occurrence of diseases. To the knowledge of the authors, this study was the first to use high-throughput amplicon sequencing targeting the 16S rRNA gene to find the causative bacteria in aquatic animals. This protocol can provide more comprehensive and reliable evidence for pathogen identification, even if the pathogenic bacteria are anaerobes or other hard-to-culture bacteria.
