RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This paper aims to provide empirical evidence concerning the impact of team climate on knowledge sharing behavior and the mediating effects of individuals' altruistic intentions in the context of healthcare settings. METHODS: Questionnaire data were collected from 212 administrators employed at a medical center in Taiwan. Team climate was assessed by the Team Climate Inventory composed of four factors, participative safety, support for innovation, vision, and task orientation. The proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: The influence of the team innovation climate on knowledge sharing behavior was evident. Furthermore, individuals' altruistic intentions played a full mediating role in the relationship between team innovation climate and knowledge sharing behavior. CONCLUSIONS: These results contribute to the field of the people-orientated perspective in knowledge management. The full mediating effect of employees' altruistic intentions provides healthcare team managers the direction to accelerate knowledge sharing behavior.

RESUMO

A novel dengue vaccine candidate comprised of a consensus dengue virus envelope protein domain III (cED III) was developed to fight against dengue virus infection. The amino acid sequence of this novel cED III was obtained by alignment of amino acid sequences from different isolates of the four serotypes of dengue viruses. A proof-of-concept study demonstrated that BALB/c mice immunized with the recombinant cED III developed neutralizing antibodies against all serotypes of dengue virus. Moreover, formulation of recombinant cED III with aluminum phosphate could induce long-lasting antibody responses and anamnestic neutralizing antibody responses following challenge with dengue virus at week 28 after priming. These results demonstrate the possibility of developing a single tetravalent vaccine against dengue viral infections.

Infectious gastroenteritis is a common illness in children. This study investigated the etiology and clinical manifestations of hospitalized children with symptoms of infectious gastroenteritis in southern Taiwan. We studied 467 consecutive patients with infectious gastroenteritis aged from 2 days to 10 years hospitalized from April 2001 to March 2002. Rotavirus was the most common etiology (57%) of infectious gastroenteritis in these patients. Bacterial infection was noted in 57 cases (12%). Rotavirus was found in 92% of nosocomial infectious gastroenteritis (p < or = 0.001). Bloody stool was a presentation of bacterial infection in 74% of cases and rotavirus gastroenteritis in 8% of cases (p < or = 0.001). The G serotype of rotavirus was identified in 87 patients. Serotype G1 was the most common (51%), followed by G9 (31%). The emergence of serotype G9 strains in rotavirus infection has not been previously reported from Taiwan. Incorporation of G9 rotavirus into vaccines should be considered.

Distinct Taura syndrome virus (TSV) isolates were found in Metapenaeus ensis (isolate Tw2KMeTSV), Penaeus monodon (isolate Tw2KPmTSV) and Litopenaeus vannamei (isolate Tw02LvTSV). Nucleotide sequence analysis of these three isolates revealed differences in the TSV structural protein (capsid protein precursor) gene orf2. TSV ORF2 amino acid sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis suggested a comparatively close relationship between these three Taiwanese isolates and the Hawaiian isolate HI94TSV. In P. monodon specimens that were naturally and experimentally infected with the Tw2KPmTSV isolate, the virus was contained and shrimps showed no clinical signs of infection. However, when P. monodon was challenged with the Tw2KMeTSV isolate, the virus replicated freely. The ORF2 amino acid sequence of the Tw2KMeTSV isolate differed from that of isolate Tw2KPmTSV in four positions and these differences may account for their phenotypic differences, at least in terms of their ability to replicate in specific hosts.
