RESUMO
In aquatic ecosystems, dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a vital role in microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling of elements. However, little is known about the associations between DOM and microbial communities in lake sediments. This study investigated the composition of water-extractable organic matter and microbial communities in surface sediments of lakes with different salinities on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and high-throughput microbial sequencing techniques were employed to assess the associations between molecular diversity and microbial diversity and the effects of salinity in 19 lakes spanning a salinity range from 0.22 to 341.87 . Our results show that increasing salinity of lake water led to higher molecular diversity of DOM in surface sediments. High-salinity lakes exhibited distinct DOM characteristics, such as lower aromaticity, smaller molecular weight, and higher oxidation degree, compared to freshwater lakes. The complexity of the microbial network composition of sediments first increased and then decreased with the increase of salinity. Moreover, as salinity increases, the dominant species transitioned from Gammaproteobacteria to Bacteroidia, and this transition was accompanied by a decrease in microbial diversity and an increase in molecular diversity. Microbial factors accounted for 34.68 % of the variation in the molecular composition of DOM. Overall, this study emphasizes the significant effects of salinity on both molecular and microbial diversity in lake sediments. Furthermore, our findings underscore the importance of microbes in controlling the range of organic compounds present in lakes and deepen our knowledge of the biogeochemical cycling of DOM.

The Yellow River Basin (YRB) plays a very important role in China's economic and social development and ecological security. In particular, the ecosystem of the YRB is sensitive to climate change. However, the change of nutrient fluxes in this region during the past years and its main driving forces remain unclear. In this study, a hydrologic model R System for Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (RSPARROW) was employed to simulate the spatio-temporal variations in the fluxes of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) during the period of 2006-2017. The results suggested that the TN and TP loads increased by 138% and 38% during 2006-2014, respectively, and decreased by 66% and 71% from 2015 to 2017, respectively. During the period of 2006-2017, the annual mean fluxes of TN and TP in the YRB were in the range of 3.9 to 591.6 kg/km2/year and 1.7 to 12.0 kg/km2/year, respectively. TN flux was low in the upstream area of the Yellow River, and presented a high level in the middle and lower reaches. However, the flux of TP in Gansu and Ningxia section was slightly higher than that in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. Precipitation and point source are the key drivers for the inter-annual changes of TN loads in most regions of the YRB. While the inter-annual variations of TP loads in the whole basin are mainly driven by the point source. This study demonstrates the important impacts of climate change on nutrient loads in the YRB. Moreover, management measures should be taken to reduce pollution sources and thus provide solid basis for control of nitrogen and phosphorus in the YRB.

Increases in nutrient loadings to waterways over the past four decades have led to widespread eutrophication and water quality impairments across China. Understanding the spatial, interannual and long-term variations in nutrient loadings and associated drivers at the national scale is crucial for developing effective nutrient reduction strategies. However, the controls on, and spatiotemporal variations in, nutrient fluxes remain a problem from both an academic and management perspective. This study provides spatially extensive and temporally contiguous estimates of changes in riverine total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and total phosphorus (TP) fluxes for continental area of China based on machine learning stack models and empirical modeling over the period from 1980 to 2018. Results reveal considerable spatial, interannual and long-term variability in annual TN, NH3-N and TP fluxes, with spatial variations in average TN and NH3-N fluxes primarily driven by net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. Interannual variability is dominated by precipitation across continental areas of China. Spatial variability in the estimated average annual TP flux in the undeveloped western and the developed middle east regions of China are primarily controlled by net anthropogenic phosphorus inputs and precipitation, respectively. We found that TN, NH3-N and TP fluxes increased from 1980 to 2018 in watersheds in East China; the national mean annual TN, NH3-N and TP fluxes increased before 2015 and decreased after 2015. This study illustrates the important role of precipitation and temperature variability in controlling the spatial, interannual and long-term variability of nutrient fluxes, and indicates that the influence of the meteorological conditions on annual loadings is needed when designing watershed nutrient reduction or management strategies.

Cable bacteria occur in many natural environments, and their electrogenic sulfide oxidation (e-SOx) may influence sediment biogeochemistry. The environmental factors determining the growth and diversity of cable bacteria are poorly known, especially in freshwater sediments. We conducted a laboratory incubation experiment, using freshwater sediments with different sulfide supply levels, to study how sulfide availability in sediment affects the metabolic activity and population dynamics of cable bacteria. A moderate increase in the sulfide availability in sediment significantly promoted metabolic activity and the proliferation of the cable bacteria population, as revealed by enhanced e-SOx intensity and increased bacteria abundance. In high-sulfide treatments there was a more significant increase in the population of cable bacteria in the deeper sediment layers, indicating that increased sulfide availability may expand the vertical scale impact of cable bacteria activities on sediment biogeochemistry. The relative proportions of co-existing species in the cable bacteria population also changed with sulfide supply levels, indicating that sulfide availability can be involved in determining the interspecies relationships of cable bacteria. Our findings provide new insight into the relationship between sediment sulfide availability and the growth, depth distribution, and species composition of cable bacteria, implying the consideration of regulating environmental sulfide availability as a potential management practice for the development of cable bacteria-based environmental biotechnologies.

The impact of meteorological factors on the transport behavior and distribution of volatile and semi-volatile organic pollutants has become an area of increasing concern. Here, we analyzed seasonal variation in climatic variables including wind, temperature, and precipitation to quantitatively assess the impact of these factors on the multimedia transport and fate of BaP in the continental region of China using a Berkeley-Trent (BETR) model. The advective rates of air exhibited an increasing trend of autumn (1.830 mol/h) < summer (1.975 mol/h) < winter (2.053 mol/h) < spring (2.405 mol/h) in association with increasing wind speed, indicating that lower atmospheric BaP concentrations are present in regions with high wind speeds and advective rates. The air-soil transport rates (0.08-45.55 mol/h) in winter were higher than in summer (0.07-32.41 mol/h), while low winter temperatures accelerate BaP accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems due to cold deposition. Cold deposition effects were more evident in northern regions than in southern regions. Further, increasing precipitation enhanced air-soil and soil-freshwater transport rates with the correlation coefficients of r = 0.445 and r = 0.598 respectively, while decreasing the air-vegetation transport rates (r = 0.475), thereby contributing to the accumulation of BaP in soils and freshwaters. In the light of the potential dispersion of BaP pollution at regional and global scales affected by these key climatic factors, this indirectly indicated the impact of future climate change on the BaP transport. Thus, flexible policy interventions should be enacted to slow future climate change.

To enhance the remediation efficiency of arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr)co-contaminated soil, the effect of various combinations of reducing and chelating agents on the removal of As and Cr was studied in the present work by using electrokinetic technology coupled with a permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB). In an experiment with EK-PRB, reducing agents (ascorbic acid and citric acid) and chelating agents (EDTA-2Na) were applied together with CaAl-layered double hydroxide (CaAl-LDH) to pretreat As and Cr co-contaminated soil. The chelating agents increased the removal efficiency of As and Cr, while the reducing agent only improved As removal in co-contaminated soil. The best removal efficiencies of As and Cr were 41.2% and 46.8%, respectively. The reducing agents promoted the production of As(III) and enhanced the migration of As. However, a large amount of Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), which affected the migration of Cr. Although the addition of chelating agents partly increased the migration of Cr(III), the removal of total chromium (TCr) still decreased. In this remediation system, a PRB can effectively capture and fix As and Cr. The results indicated that As was mainly adsorbed on the surface of CaAl-LDH, while the surface adsorption and intercalation of CaAl-LDH were the main mechanisms for Cr.

Emission intensity and climate change control the transport flux and fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in multiple environmental compartments. This study applied a multimedia model (BETR model) to explore alternations in the spatio-temporal trends of concentrations and transport flux of benzopyrene (BaP), phenanthrene (Phe), perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Chaohu watershed, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China in response to changes in source emissions and climate. The potential historic and future risks of these pollutants also were assessed. The results suggest that current trends in concentrations and transport were similar to that of their emissions between 2005 and 2018. During the next 100 years, temporal trends and spatial patterns were not predicted to change significantly, which is consistent with climate change. Based on sensitivity and correlation analyses, climate change had significant effects on multi-media concentrations and transport fluxes of BaP, Phe, PFOS and PCBs, and rainfall intensity was the predominant controlling factor. Risk quotients (RQs) of BaP and Phe-in soil increased from 0.42 to 0.95 and 0.06 to 0.35, respectively, from 2005 to 2090, indicating potential risks. The RQs of the other examined contaminants exhibited little potential risk in soil, water, or sediment. Based on spatial patterns, it was inferred that the ecosystem around Lake Chaohu is the most at risk. The study provides insights needed for local pollution control of POPs in the Chaohu watershed. In addition, the developed approach can be applied to other watersheds world-wide.

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are expected to impact the environmental behaviors and fates of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), however, quantitative studies on these combined factors are scarce. In this study, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as examples to identify how and when those factors may be related to the deposition of POPs in the sediment of Lake Chaohu, China, using generalized additive models (GAMs). Three historical trends of DDT, PAH, and PCB deposition were delineated in a dated sediment core encompassing ~100â¯years of historical record: a steady state or gradually increasing stage, a rapidly increasing stage, and a declining stage. The GAM results showed that aquatic total phosphorus (TP) concentrations and regional GDP (anthropogenic factors) were dominant contributors to POP accumulation rates in the lake sediment. The fitted relationships between air temperature and sedimentary DDT and PAH concentrations were linear and negative, while a positive linear relationship was found for PCBs, suggesting that Lake Chaohu may have become a net source for DDTs and PAHs, and a sink for PCBs, under a progressively warming climate.

Studies that address the potential effects of climate and anthropogenic activities on lacustrine phytoplankton succession are scarce in the shallow lakes. In the present work, the succession of phytoplankton community inferred from sedimentary pigments has been investigated; the impacts of climate and anthropogenic activities on the succession have been evaluated by the generalized additive models (GAMs) in a shallow eutrophied lake, Lake Chaohu, located eastern China. The results show that phytoplankton succession can be divided into two periods: pre-1960s and post 1960s. The mean values of ßßCar and Chl a increased after the 1960s at both sites sampled, from 0.013 to 0.359, and 0.013 to 1.382⯵gâ¯g-1, respectively (site C4), and from 0.015 to 0.530, and 0.010 to 0.921⯵gâ¯g-1, respectively (site C14), reflecting significant increases of primary productivity since the 1960s. The percentage of diatoms and dinoflagellates preserved in sediments decreased from ~90% to ~15% since the 1960s, while cyanobacteria and green algae increased from ~5% to ~35%, respectively, reflecting the shift of the lake phytoplankton community. This succession was related to construction of the Chaohu Dam in 1963, increasing discharges of anthropogenic N and P into the Lake, and a generally warming environment as reflected by increasing average air temperatures. The results of GAMs showed aquatic total phosphorus (TP) concentration is the dominant contributor to phytoplankton community change, explaining 42.74%, 40.27%, 40.77% and 72.28% of the variance of total algae, cyanobacteria, green algae, and diatoms and dinoflagellates, respectively. The positive impacts of increasing TP concentrations on abundances of total algae, cyanobacteria, and green algae were observed during periods of relatively high TP concentrations since the mid-1970s. The positive responses of total algae, cyanobacteria, green algae and diatoms and dinoflagellates to increasing average air temperatures were observed since the mid-1990s, showing that a generally warmer environment facilitated algae proliferation.

Nutrient criteria provide a scientific foundation for the comprehensive evaluation, prevention, control and management of water eutrophication. In this review, the literature was examined to systematically evaluate the benefits, drawbacks, and applications of statistical analysis, paleolimnological reconstruction, stressor-response model, and model inference approaches for nutrient criteria determination. The developments and challenges in the determination of nutrient criteria in lakes and reservoirs are presented. Reference lakes can reflect the original states of lakes, but reference sites are often unavailable. Using the paleolimnological reconstruction method, it is often difficult to reconstruct the historical nutrient conditions of shallow lakes in which the sediments are easily disturbed. The model inference approach requires sufficient data to identify the appropriate equations and characterize a waterbody or group of waterbodies, thereby increasing the difficulty of establishing nutrient criteria. The stressor-response model is a potential development direction for nutrient criteria determination, and the mechanisms of stressor-response models should be studied further. Based on studies of the relationships among water ecological criteria, eutrophication, nutrient criteria and plankton, methods for determining nutrient criteria should be closely integrated with water management requirements.

In this study, a large scale investigation of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in sediments from 52 lakes, located in five geographic regions across China, was conducted to assess sediment quality in terms of organic contaminants. Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment were found to range between 17.00-6,633, 0.12-45.24, and 0.03-13.99ngg-1, respectively. Lake sediments from different regions exhibited variation in contamination levels, and in the compositions of isomers. The descending order of contamination levels for the three SVOCs groups (i.e., ∑PAHs, ∑OCPs, ∑PCBs) were as follows: the eastern plain region (EPR)>the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau (YGP)>the northeast China region (NCR)>the Qinghai-Tibet plateau (QTP)>the Mongolia-Xinjiang plateau (MXP). High molecular weight PAHs, OCPs and PCBs were found at high concentrations in parts of the EPR and YGP, while lighter isomers were likely to be atmospherically transported, resulting in their nationwide distribution. The sources and type variation (local input or atmospheric deposition) are the primary controls of spatial variation. Additionally, human related socio-economic factors, and geographic conditions also played important roles in influencing the spatial differentiation. According to simple sediment quality guidelines (SQG), the risks posed by PCBs in sediments were not as serious as those posed by PAHs and DDT.

The importance of developing numeric nutrient criteria has been recognized to protect the designated uses of water bodies from nutrient enrichment that is associated with broadly occurring levels of nitrogen/phosphorus pollution. The identification and estimation of stressor-response models in aquatic ecosystems has been shown to be useful in the determination of nutrient criteria. In this study, three methods based on stressor-response relationships were applied to determine nutrient criteria for Yungui ecoregion lakes with respect to total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and planktonic chlorophyll a (Chl a). Simple linear regression (SLR) models were established to provide an estimate of the relationship between a response variable and a stressor. Multiple linear regressions were used to simultaneously estimate the effect of TP and TN on Chl a. A morphoedaphic index (MEI) was applied to derive nutrient criteria using data from Yungui ecoregion lakes, which were considered as areas with less anthropogenic influences. Nutrient criteria, as determined by these three methods, showed broad agreement for all parameters. The ranges of numeric nutrient criteria for Yungui ecoregion lakes were determined as follows: TP 0.008-0.010 mg/L and TN 0.140-0.178 mg/L. The stressor-response analysis described will be of benefit to support countries in their numeric criteria development programs and to further the goal of reducing nitrogen/phosphorus pollution in China.

Establishing the nutrient reference condition (baseline environmental condition) of lakes in an ecoregion is a critical consideration in the development of scientifically defensible aquatic nutrient criteria. Three methods were applied to determine reference conditions in the Eastern plain ecoregion lakes with respect to total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), planktonic chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Secchi depth (SD). The reference condition value for the lakes in the Eastern plain ecoregion by the trisection method is TP of 0.029 mg/L, TN of 0.67 mg/L, Chl-a of 3.92 mg/m3, SD of 0.85 m, and the reference condition range by the lake population distribution approach is TP of 0.014-0.043 mg/L, TN of 0.360-0.785 mg/L, Chl-a of 1.78-4.73 mg/m3, SD of 0.68-1.21 m. Additionally, empirical models were developed for estimating the reference Chl-a concentration and SD successfully for lakes in the Eastern plain ecoregion. Overall, the data suggest that multiple methods can be used to determine reference conditions and that in Eastern plain ecoregion lakes the reference condition corresponds to a mesotrophic status.

The trophic status assessment of lakes in different lake regions may provide important and fundamental information for lake trophic state classification and eutrophication control. In this study, a region-specific lake eutrophication assessment standard was established through a frequency distribution method based on chlorophyll-a concentration. The assessment standards under the oligotrophic state for lakes in the Eastern plain, Yungui Plateau, Northeast Plain and Mountain Mongolia-Xinjiang regions are total phosphorus of 0.068, 0.005, 0.011, 0.005 mg/L; total nitrogen of 1.00, 0.16, 0.37, 0.60 mg/L; Secchi depth of 0.60, 8.00, 1.55, 3.00 m; and COD(Mn) of 2.24, 1.00, 5.11, 4.00 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, a region-specific comprehensive trophic level index was developed to provide an understandable assessment method for the public. The results indicated that the frequency distribution analysis based on chlorophyll-a combined with trophic level index provided a useful metric for the assessment of the lake trophic status. In addition, the difference of eutrophication assessment standards in different lake regions was analyzed, which suggested that the sensitivities of algae to nutrients and the assessment standard of trophic status possessed significant regional differences for the four lake ecoregions. Lake eutrophication assessment standards would contribute to maximizing the effectiveness of future management strategies, to control and minimize lake eutrophication problems.
