RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To estimate gingival crevicular immunoglobulin A(IgA) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) among type II diabetic patients with periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A non-randomized study was done of 40 periodontitis subjects with a mean age of 50 years and were recruited into two groups, Group A (Type II controlled diabetics with HbA1c < 7%) and Group B (non-diabetics with HbA1c between 4 and 6%). Both the groups underwent nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). The clinical parameters were recorded at baseline, 1, and 3 months. GCF sample was collected for the estimation of crevicular IgA at baseline and at 3 months. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Results were analyzed using parametric tests paired t-test and Student's t-test for every assessment point. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Difference in IgA levels and clinical parameters was seen between diabetic and non-diabetic groups, which was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Changes in crevicular IgA levels in patients with diabetic periodontitis can be used as a novel biomarker in assessing the inflammatory status.

Introduction: The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare the levels of salivary Interleukin-6 (IL-6) before and after the placement of dental implants in patients who are supplemented with nitric oxide (NO). Materials and Methods: The study comprised 34 patients, divided into control and study groups (17 in each group). The control group was given a placebo and in the study group, nitric oxide supplement was prescribed, whereas the control group received a placebo. Saliva samples were taken before placement of dental implants, first and third day after the implant placement. The levels of salivary IL-6 were assessed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant P value (<0.05) with respect to IL-6 levels on first and third days after placement of dental implants. Salivary IL-6 levels in the study group declined significantly. On day three, the IL-6 values for the control and study groups were 0.0639 and 0.0443, respectively. Within the groups, it was observed that there was a significant decrease in IL-6 values from day one to day three. Discussion: The levels of salivary IL-6 reduced from day one to day three more significantly and consistently in patients prescribed with NO supplements post-dental implant placement, suggesting better resolution of inflammation.

RESUMO

Mucormycosis or black fungus is a rare fungal infection, but cases are rising amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. The disease mostly infects immunocompromised patients including diabetics and those receiving corticosteroid therapy. The most common etiological agent is Rhizopus arrhizus, from the Mucorales family of fungi. The fungal spores may affect the nose and sinuses, the respiratory tract, renal tract, cutaneous tissues, or may be disseminated throughout the body. Early detection can be done by PCR technique, but direct microscopy is also commonly done. Treatment is most commonly done using high-cost liposomal Amphotericin B injections. Surgical debridement of the affected tissues may sometimes be necessary. Knowledge of the disease and its management techniques is absolutely essential for healthcare professionals in the current scenario. Early diagnosis may improve prognosis. In this narrative review, we seek to provide an overview of the most essential features of Mucormycosis, especially in association with SARS-CoV-2.

AIM: The present study aimed to individually evaluate and compare the aerobic and anaerobic antibacterial activity of Allium sativum extract, aqueous ozone, diode laser, and 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as root canal irrigants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients were selected and randomly allocated to one of the four groups (n = 12 each) according to the irrigant to be used in each group. For each included tooth, the preirrigation and postirrigation (after irrigation with the test solution) samples were collected through sterile paper points and microbial culturing was done by swabbing on blood agar plates followed by incubation for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Manual colony-forming units counting were done, and statistical analysis was performed. Analysis of variance (one-way) followed by post hoc test was performed as a parametric test to compare the difference between the groups for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. RESULTS: All the groups showed a statistically significant reduction in bacteria (P < 0.05). However, between the groups, the maximum reduction was seen with 3% NaOCl followed by diode laser, A. sativum extract, and least by aqueous ozone. CONCLUSION: A. sativum extract, aqueous zone, diode laser, and 3% NaOCl showed significant antibacterial activity against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
