RESUMO

Lung cancer most often metastasizes to the central nervous system, bone and liver. Although metastases to the skin are quite rare, it is estimated that they may be the first clinical manifestation of this disease in 0.7%-12% of cases. Metastases to the skin are caused by adenocarcinoma (about 30%), squamous cell carcinoma (30%) and undifferentiated carcinoma (40%). Nasal tip metastases are extremely rare. They can be confused with more common skin problems, including non-melanoma skin cancers, rhinophyma, inflammatory tumors or infectious diseases. We report two patients with a tumor on the nose, which proved to be the first sign of the metastatic lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is very difficult to diagnose, especially in its early stages. Non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic factors for this cancer are urgently needed. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether the microRNAs (miRNAs) regulating genes involved in iron homeostasis, whose disruption is a hallmark of HCC, offer potential as diagnostic or prognostic factors of HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum and tumor samples, and adjacent liver specimens, were obtained from 65 HCC patients. Additionally, serum samples were obtained from 65 healthy controls. In total, 28 circulating and eight tissue microRNA expression profiles were estimated by TaqMan qPCR. RESULTS: The expression profiles of all tested miRNAs were altered in the hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Iron level was negatively related to serum miR-96 level in healthy controls. Although the expression of iron metabolism proteins correlated with the level of serum miRNA in the controls, this was not observed in cancer patients. In the group of cancer patients, Let-7a, miR-29b, and miR-133a were positively related to ferroportin, transferrin and ferritin levels, while miR-31, miR-221 and miR-532 were negatively related to ferroportin, transferrin receptor 1 and ferritin levels. According to ROC curve analyses, 15 miRNAs are able to discriminate with 100% sensitivity and specificity between hepatocellular carcinoma patients and healthy subjects, which is more efficient than α-fetoprotein. CONCLUSIONS: Circulating miRNAs that regulate the expression of iron metabolism proteins should be evaluated as promising candidates for HCV-related HCC diagnostic agents.

In 2018, during a circumnavigation of Antarctica below 62° S by the sailing boat Katharsis II, the presence of plastics was investigated with surface sampling nets at ten evenly spaced locations (every 36° of longitude). Although fibres that appeared to be plastic (particles up to 2 cm) were found in numbers ranging from 1 particle (0.002 particles per m3) to 171 particles (1.366 particles per m3) per station, a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis indicated that these particles were not composed of plastic. The fibres which superficially reminded plastic were composed of silica and are of biological origin most likely generated by phytoplankton (diatoms). Therefore, the offshore Antarctic locations were proven to be free of floating microplastics.

Literary fiction has been credited with considerable power to improve attitudes toward outgroups. It was even argued that it has been an important factor behind the global decline of violence against various minorities in the last centuries. Could it also help to reduce the human-inflicted suffering of animals? To test this, we studied the attitude toward animal welfare of n = 921 (experimental group) people of both sexes who read a short fragment of an unpublished novel with a motif of the physical abuse of an animal. The control group (n = 912) read a fragment of a similar length but not related to animals. After reading the text all subjects filled out an on-line questionnaire with seven items (camouflaged among many others items) measuring attitudes toward animal welfare. The questionnaire included also demographical questions, such as whether the subject keeps pets. We found that in comparison with the control group, the experimental group was significantly more concerned about animal welfare. This result indicates that literary fiction can influence attitudes toward other species. It is also worth noting that our study is characterized by a high level of ecological validity, i.e. a relatively high extent to which its results can be generalized (or extended) to real-world settings. Due to its specific design, which involved the cooperation of a bestselling author and his publisher, the study approximated the typical conditions in which people read fiction in a remarkably accurate way. Finally, our research has potential practical implications for promoting animal welfare.
