The epidemic of coronary heart disease in the western world followed the introduction of partially hydrogenated fats in food. Exposure to trans fatty acids (TFA) in those foods can explain the observed sex and age differences in serum cholesterol concentrations and coronary heart disease (CHD), the cholesterolaemic response to pregnancy, and national differences in rates of CHD. There is evidence that TFA can be innocuously used for muscular work. I propose that the TFA in partially hydrogenated fats impair lipoprotein receptors during energy surfeit, leading to hypercholesterolaemia, atherogenesis, obesity, and insulin resistance. A series of feasible experiments is proposed to examine this hypothesis.

A system is described for collecting small aliquots of each voiding. A pool of these samples is returned to the laboratory for calculation of the 24-hr urine volume and for chemical analysis. The components of the system are reusable so that the cost per collection is likely to be less than that of cumbersome large bottles.

Southern Africa presents some fine opportunities to examine the relation of lifestyle to chronic disease. A cross-cultural comparison of disease is the only feasible way to study many of the chronic diseases. Biomedical scientists have an obligation to undertake this. If they do not, there is the dreadful expectation that the rising cultures will soon suffer the same diseases which the members of the highest socio-economic classes must now endure.

Extracts of foods were examined to identify materials which inactivate Na+-K+-dependent ATPase. Active material which we call food factor was found in tea, cocoa, red wines, and in certain other dietary components. A unit of activity is defined and the material is compared with ouabain and an inhibitory flavone. The possible role of such a food factor in the regulation of sodium metabolism and in the causation of essential high blood pressure is discussed.
