RESUMO

We present the case of a 3-year-old male child with an epibulbar bone choristoma. The patient presented with a hard consistency subconjunctival mass of 8×10mm in the superior-temporal quadrant of his right eye along with vascularisation and a long cilium of approximately 8 to 10mm that touched the corneal surface. The histopathology study showed the presence of trabeculae of mature, compact bone surrounded by fibrous tissue, as well as Havers channels with concentric rings of laminar bone without bone marrow, and with normal osteocytes which defined the diagnosis of epibulbar bone choristoma. Osseous choristoma is the rarest type of the ocular choristoma and should be considered as a differential diagnosis among paediatric epibulbar tumours.

RESUMO

CLINICAL CASE: An 18 year-old male patient presented with an injury to the left eye caused by a firearm. He remained unconscious for 2 days in an agricultural area, had a visual acuity of non-perception of light, wounds with loss of substance in upper and lower eyelid, atalamia, hypotonia, corneal oedema, wound with uveal exposure and exit of larvae in zone II. He was subjected to evisceration of the left eye. DISCUSSION: An untreated open ocular traumatism is a risk factor for intraocular ophthalmomyiasis.

RESUMO

AIMS: Bacterial kiwifruit canker disease, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) was detected in north-west Portugal in 2010, and has since caused significant losses. The objectives of this work were to characterize the Portuguese population(s) of Psa and to define the actual prevalence of Psa biovars in the most productive kiwifruit region in Portugal. METHODS AND RESULTS: Isolates obtained from Actinidia deliciosa orchards were characterized by morphological, biochemical, physiological, fatty acids and molecular tests (PCR, BOX-PCR, duplex-PCR, multiplex-PCR and RFLP), phaseolotoxin, housekeeping and effector genes and pathogenicity. Results established that only Psa biovar 3 is present in the north-west of Portugal, despite phenotypic and genetic variability among the isolates. CONCLUSIONS: This work provides new information on P. syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) genetic profile in Portugal, indicating for the first time, that two genetically different subpopulations of Psa biovar 3 are present. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: A new subpopulation of Psa biovar 3 was found for the first time in Portugal, contributing to increase knowledge about this population worldwide and to support further understanding of the impact of Psa.

RESUMO

Hydatid disease, also known as Echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus. The human cystic variant primarily affects liver and lungs. The pelvic location of the disease is a rare finding usually secondary to a ruptured liver cyst, although it may also appear as a primary lesion affecting the genital organs. Despite its rarity, in endemic areas, pelvic hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of complex adnexal cystic mass, to make an appropriate treatment strategy. The suspected diagnosis is based on imaging studies and serodiagnostic techniques, in which a new field of research attempts to find a standardized test with sufficient sensitivity and specificity. We report a case of primary pelvic hydatid disease in postmenopausal women operated for suspected ovarian cancer.

RESUMO

A radiometric study was carried out in two Radiodiagnostic Units, with seven rooms being assessed. Methodology of the Radiodiagnostics Quality Control Protocol ARCAL XLIX (Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was used. From radiation protection viewpoint, effective dose rates on surface for different relevant positions were calculated. The eigthy-five percent (85 percent) of assessed positions showed effective dose rates within limit values established in the ARCAL XLIX Protocol. Nevertheless, occupationally-exposed personnel (OEP) placed at position A (controlled area) -one meter distant from the phantom- was found to be exceeding by 7 the ARCAL XLIX advised values.
