RESUMO

Dengue fever (DF) is the most frequent arboviral disease globally. Deforestation, armed conflicts, and climate change have caused an unprecedented global spread of DF, raising concerns in healthcare systems worldwide. Systemic manifestations of the disease range from mild to severe and, in some cases, can lead to death. Although neurological complications have been reported over the last few decades, they are often neglected or underreported. The present narrative review aims to describe the most important central and peripheral nervous system complications and provide guidance to neurologists in terms of diagnosis and management.

O desmatamento, os conflitos armados e as mudanças climáticas levaram a uma disseminação global e sem precedentes da dengue, o que gera preocupações na maioria dos sistemas de saúde em todo o mundo. As manifestações sistêmicas variam de leves a graves, incluindo morte. Complicações neurológicas têm sido descritas nas últimas décadas, mas geralmente são negligenciadas ou subnotificadas. O objetivo desta revisão narrativa é descrever as complicações neurológicas centrais e periféricas e auxiliar os neurologistas em seu diagnóstico e manejo.

Aim: To develop a ß-AgVO3 gel and evaluate its physicochemical stability and antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Materials & methods: The gel was prepared from the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ß-AgVO3. The physicochemical stability was evaluated by centrifugation, accelerated stability (AS), storage (St), pH, syringability, viscosity and spreadability tests and antifungal activity by the agar diffusion. Results: The MIC was 62.5 µg/ml. After centrifugation, AS and St gels showed physicochemical stability. Lower viscosity and higher spreadability were observed for the higher ß-AgVO3 concentration and the minimum force for extrusion was similar for all groups. Antifungal effect was observed only for the ß-AgVO3 gel with 20xMIC. Conclusion: The ß-AgVO3 gel showed physicochemical stability and antifungal activity.


We used silver and vanadium to make a gel that can kill fungi in the mouth. We looked at the color of the gel, it's smell and also checked how well it lasted. The gel turned yellow and had no smell and did not spoil for at least 2 months. When we tested the gel against a type of fungus, it worked as well as another medicine called chlorhexidine, which is sold in pharmacies. But when we compared it with another medicine called nystatin, our gel was not as effective in killing the fungus.

Introduction: The phenomenon of aging is distinguished by profound life transformations, with the most dependent group being constituted by elderly individuals. The responsibility for their care primarily falls on the figure of the informal caregiver. The scarcity of time, the stress associated with caregiving, the financial, work-related, and personal difficulties it entails, make it a collective with high probabilities of experiencing various psychological disorders. Interventions that have shown the best results are those of multiple components, composed of various techniques that seek to adapt to the reality of the informal caregiver. Method: The purpose of this study is a systematic review of effective interventions on depressive symptoms, emotional wellbeing, burden, or quality of life in informal caregivers of non-institutionalized dependents from 2018 to the present. A search was conducted in November 2023, on Pubmed, Pubmed Central, Proquest, and Scielo. The final review was conducted on 11 articles. Results: The results indicate that multiple component interventions including cognitive behavioral techniques and psychoeducation in combination with stress coping techniques and social support are more effective on depressive symptoms, burden, quality of life, and increasing the social support network. Discussion: Results on web-based programs demonstrate their efficacy and effectiveness, but require a greater number of trials to adjust their methodological quality and content to the idiosyncrasies of the informal caregiver.

Obesity/overweight and its complications are a growing problem in many countries. Italian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery for Obesity (Società Italiana di Chirurgia dell'Obesità e delle Malattie Metaboliche-SICOB) decided to develop the first Italian guidelines for the endoscopic bariatric treatment of obesity. The creation of SICOB Guidelines is based on an extended work made by a panel of 44 members and a coordinator. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology has been used to decide the aims, reference population, and target health professionals. Clinical questions have been created using the PICO (patient, intervention, comparison, outcome) conceptual framework. We will perform systematic reviews, formal meta-analyses, and network meta-analyses for each PICO and critical outcomes aimed at assessing and rating the efficacy and safety of endoscopic bariatric procedures in comparison with either no interventions, lifestyle interventions, or approved anti-obesity treatments in trials with a follow-up of at least 52 weeks. For PICO on temporary endoscopic bariatric treatments, we will also consider RCT with a minimum duration of 6 months. The panel proposed 8 questions, organized into four domains: A. Indication for endoscopic bariatric surgery; B. Revisional surgery; C. Temporary gastric and duodenal-jejunal procedures; D. Endoscopic diagnosis/treatment of bariatric and metabolic surgery complications. These guidelines will apply to patients aged ≥ 14 years) with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m2 and requiring endoscopic bariatric surgery or endoscopic diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. The areas covered by the clinical questions included indications of endoscopic bariatric surgery, types of surgery, revisional surgery, and management of bariatric and metabolic surgery complications.

Tumor-associated myeloid-derived cells (MDCs) significantly impact cancer prognosis and treatment responses due to their remarkable plasticity and tumorigenic behaviors. Here, we integrate single-cell RNA-sequencing data from different cancer types, identifying 29 MDC subpopulations within the tumor microenvironment. Our analysis reveals abnormally expanded MDC subpopulations across various tumors and distinguishes cell states that have often been grouped together, such as TREM2+ and FOLR2+ subpopulations. Using deconvolution approaches, we identify five subpopulations as independent prognostic markers, including states co-expressing TREM2 and PD-1, and FOLR2 and PDL-2. Additionally, TREM2 alone does not reliably predict cancer prognosis, as other TREM2+ macrophages show varied associations with prognosis depending on local cues. Validation in independent cohorts confirms that FOLR2-expressing macrophages correlate with poor clinical outcomes in ovarian and triple-negative breast cancers. This comprehensive MDC atlas offers valuable insights and a foundation for futher analyses, advancing strategies for treating solid cancers.

Brazil stands out in research, industrial development, and farmers' use of microbial inoculants, with an emphasis on getting benefits from the biological nitrogen fixation process with the soybean crop. Nowadays, about 140 million doses of inoculants are commercialized annually for the soybean in the country, and strain identification is achieved by rep-PCR, an effective but time-consuming method. Aiming to develop an easy, low-cost, and low-time-consuming method, we used a complete genome-based approach based on the unequivocal identification of unique genes present in the genomes of each of the four Bradyrhizobium strains used in commercial inoculants: Bradyrhizobium elkanii strains SEMIA 587 and SEMIA 5019, Bradyrhizobium japonicum SEMIA 5079, and Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens SEMIA 5080. The unique pairs of primers able to amplify genomic regions of different sizes allowed the identification of the four strains in a simple multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Validation was confirmed by using single colonies, multiple cultures, and commercial inoculants. The number of labor hours of a technician was 3.08 times higher, and the final cost was 3.25 times higher in the rep-PCR than in the multiplex PCR. Most importantly, the results for multiplex PCR were obtained on the same day, in contrast with 15 days in the traditional methodology. The genomic approach developed can be easily applied to a variety of microbial inoculants worldwide, in addition to studies of ecology and evaluation of the competitiveness of the strains.

The dataset provides data obtained with eye-tracking while 55 volunteers solved 3 distinct neuropsychological tests on a screen inside a closed room. Among the 55 volunteers, 22 were women and 33 were men, all with ages ranging between 9 and 50, and 5 of whom were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) [1]. The eye-tracker used for the collection of the data was an EyeTribe, which has a sampling rate of 60 Hz and an average visual angle between 0.5 and 1, which correspond to an on-screen error between 0.5 and 1cm (0.1969 to 0.393 inches aprox) respectively, when the distance to the user is around 60cm (23.62 in) [2], which was the case during the collection of these data. The neuropsychological tests were implemented in a software named NEURO-INNOVA KIDS® [3], which are the following: a domino test adapted from the D-48 intelligence test [4], an adaptation of the MASMI test consisting of unfolded cubes [5], the figures series completion test adapted from [6], and the Poppelreuter figures test [7]. Before each of the tests, a calibration process was performed, ensuring that the visual angle error was less than or equal to 0.5 cm (0.1969 in), which is considered an acceptable calibration. The collective mean duration of the four administered tests amounted to 20 minutes. This dataset exhibits significant promise for potential utilization due to the extensive prevalence of these neuropsychological assessments among healthcare practitioners for evaluating diverse cognitive faculties in individuals. Moreover, it has been empirically established that poor performance on these tests is associated with attention deficits [8].

Computational modeling (CM) is a versatile scientific methodology used to examine the properties and behavior of complex systems, such as polymeric materials for biomedical bioengineering. CM has emerged as a primary tool for predicting, setting up, and interpreting experimental results. Integrating in silico and in vitro experiments accelerates scientific advancements, yielding quicker results at a reduced cost. While CM is a mature discipline, its use in biomedical engineering for biopolymer materials has only recently gained prominence. In biopolymer biomedical engineering, CM focuses on three key research areas: (A) Computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) utilizes specialized software to design and model biopolymers for various biomedical applications. This technology allows researchers to create precise three-dimensional models of biopolymers, taking into account their chemical, structural, and functional properties. These models can be used to enhance the structure of biopolymers and improve their effectiveness in specific medical applications. (B) Finite element analysis, a computational technique used to analyze and solve problems in engineering and physics. This approach divides the physical domain into small finite elements with simple geometric shapes. This computational technique enables the study and understanding of the mechanical and structural behavior of biopolymers in biomedical environments. (C) Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations involve using advanced computational techniques to study the behavior of biopolymers at the molecular and atomic levels. These simulations are fundamental for better understanding biological processes at the molecular level. Studying the wide-ranging uses of MD simulations in biopolymers involves examining the structural, functional, and evolutionary aspects of biomolecular systems over time. MD simulations solve Newton's equations of motion for all-atom systems, producing spatial trajectories for each atom. This provides valuable insights into properties such as water absorption on biopolymer surfaces and interactions with solid surfaces, which are crucial for assessing biomaterials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the various applications of MD simulations in biopolymers. Additionally, it highlights the flexibility, robustness, and synergistic relationship between in silico and experimental techniques.

Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant tumor in the pediatric population. Its classification has incorporated key molecular variations alongside histological characterization. CD39 (also known as ENTPD1) and CD73 (also known as NT5E), enzymes of the purinergic signaling pathway, act in synergy to generate extracellular adenosine, creating an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Our study examined the expression of mRNA of these genes in previously described transcriptome data sets of medulloblastoma patient samples from the Cavalli Cohort (n = 763). Survival distribution was estimated according to the Kaplan-Meier method using a median cut-off and log-rank statistics (p ≤ 0.05). In non-WNT and non-SHH medulloblastoma Group 4 (n = 264), the high expression of ENTPD1 and NT5E was significantly related to a lower overall survival (p = 2.7e-04; p = 2.6e-03). In the SHH-activated group (n = 172), the high expression of ENTPD1 was significantly related to lower overall survival (p = 7.8e-03), while the high expression of NT5E was significantly related to greater overall survival (p = 0.017). In the WNT group (n = 63), the expressions of ENTPD1 and NT5E were not significantly correlated with overall survival (p = 0.212; p = 0.101). In non-WNT and non-SHH medulloblastoma Group 3 (n = 113), the high expression of ENTPD1 was significantly related to greater survival (p = 0.034), while expression of NT5E was not significantly related to survival of patients (p = 0.124). This in silico analysis indicates that ENTPD1 (CD39) and NT5E (CD73) can be seen as potential prognostic markers and therapeutic targets for primary medulloblastomas in non-WNT and non-SHH Group 4.

This paper reports the case of a female patient who underwent minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) in another service that evolved with bar rotation and cardiac perforation caused by the left stabilizer. The unique and frightening aspect of the case is that despite having the stabilizer inside the ventricle, the patient was oligosymptomatic: occasional chest pain and respiratory discomfort. Preoperative imaging showed rotation of the bar with stabilizers within the thoracic cavity. During surgery, intense ossification was observed around the prosthesis and it was noted that the left stabilizer had perforated the patient's left ventricle. Cardiac repair required a Clamshell incision and cardiopulmonary bypass. This case reinforces the validity of late radiological follow-up after MIRPE in an attempt to avoid this type of event, and the need to reevaluate the use of stabilizers perpendicular to the bar since they are not safe to prevent rotation of these implants.

Obesity is associated with a low-grade chronic inflammatory process characterized by higher circulating TNFα levels, thus contributing to insulin resistance. This study evaluated the effect of silybin, the main bioactive component of silymarin, which has anti-inflammatory properties, on TNFα levels and its impact on glucose uptake in the adipocyte cell line 3T3-L1 challenged with two different inflammatory stimuli, TNFα or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Silybin's pre-treatment effect was evaluated in adipocytes pre-incubated with silybin (30 or 80 µM) before challenging with the inflammatory stimuli (TNFα or LPS). For the post-treatment effect, the adipocytes were first challenged with the inflammatory stimuli and then post-treated with silybin. After treatments, TNFα production, glucose uptake, and GLUT4 protein expression were determined. Both inflammatory stimuli increased TNFα secretion, diminished GLUT4 expression, and significantly decreased glucose uptake. Silybin 30 µM only reduced TNFα secretion after the LPS challenge. Silybin 80 µM as post-treatment or pre-treatment decreased TNFα levels, improving glucose uptake. However, glucose uptake enhancement induced by silybin did not depend on GLUT4 protein expression. These results show that silybin importantly reduced TNFα levels and upregulates glucose uptake, independently of GLUT4 protein expression.

BACKGROUND: In the present study, we evaluated whether DEFB1 gene polymorphisms are associated with the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Two rs11362 A/G, and rs1800972 C/G gene polymorphisms of DEFB1 gene were genotyped by 5'exonuclease TaqMan assays in 219 patients with CAD and 522 control individuals. RESULTS: The distribution of rs1800972 C/G polymorphisms was similar in patients with CAD and healthy controls. Nonetheless, under the co-dominant, dominant, recessive, and additive models, the AA genotype of the rs11362 A/G polymorphism was associated with the risk of developing CAD (OR = 1.89 pCCo-Dom = 0.041, OR = 1.46, pCDom = 0.034, OR = 1.69, pCRes = 0.039, and OR = 1.37, pCAdd = 0.012, respectively). In addition, the linkage disequilibrium showed that the 'AG' haplotype was associated with an increased risk of developing CAD (OR = 1.23, p = 0.042). According, with the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) consortium data, the rs11362 AA genotype is associated with a low mRNA expression of the ß-defensin-1 in tissues, such as artery aorta, artery coronary, heart left ventricle, and heart atrial appendage (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that rs11362 A/G polymorphism of the DEFB1 gene is involved in the risk of developing CAD, and with a low RNA expression of the ß-defensin-1 in heart tissue.

In this work, the (TiO2)20 cluster is proposed to adsorb the methylene blue (BM) dye; thus, the quantum parameters to explain the adsorption process are calculated by means of density functional theory calculations. Eight possible configurations are obtained and labeled from M1 to M8. According to the adsorption energy values, they reveal physisorption for at least two cases, and for the rest of the systems, they exhibit chemisorption. The preferential positions that lead to good adsorption for the BM dye are parallel to the semiconductor cluster; however, when one end of the BM dye formed by hydrogen atoms is interacting with the cluster, a weak chemical interaction is reached. The chemical interactions for M4 and M5 systems generate considerable increases of their electronic gap values (E g) with respect to the rest, and this effect is explained based on iso-surfaces of frontier orbitals and electronic charge transference. The chemical interactions between these chemical species are stable under vibrational and thermal criteria. This semiconductor cluster arises as a good candidate to adsorb some dyes like BM.

INTRODUCTION: Decompressive craniectomy substantially reduces mortality and disability rates following a malignant stroke. This procedure remains a life-saving option, especially in contexts with little access to mechanical thrombectomy despite downward trends in the performance of decompressive craniectomy due to discussions on the acceptance of living with severe disabilities. However, the outcomes of the surgery in cases involving concomitant occlusion of anterior or posterior cerebral arteries have not been extensively studied. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, spanning January 2010 to December 2022 and including patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy, we compared outcomes between patients with and without additional vascular territory involvement. Independent variables included age, sex, comorbidities, admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores, time elapsed between stroke and surgery, laterality of the stroke, midline shift, and postoperative infarction volume. Outcomes included mortality and Modified Rankin Score at the 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: Of the 86 patients analyzed, 61 (70.9%) and 25 (29.1%) demonstrated no territory and additional territory involvement, respectively. Patients with involvement of additional territories exhibited lower admission GCS scores, higher NIHSS scores, and larger postoperative infarction volumes. However, these variables were not associated with poor outcomes. Univariate analyses revealed no differences in mortality or severe disability. Even after adjustment, the differences remained insignificant for mortality and severe disability. Age emerged as the sole variable linked to increased mortality. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that, for patients with malignant stroke undergoing decompressive craniectomy, the outcomes for patients with and without involvement of additional vascular territory are similar.

BACKGROUND: Ring chromosome 14 syndrome is a rare disorder primarily marked by early-onset epilepsy, microcephaly, distinctive craniofacial features, hypotonia, intellectual disability, and delay in both development and language acquisition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman with a history of epileptic seizures since the age of 1.5 years presented with distinctive craniofacial features, including a prominent and narrow forehead, sparse and short eyebrows, palpebral ptosis, horizontal palpebral fissures, a broad nasal bridge, a prominent nasal tip, a flat philtrum, hypertelorism, midfacial hypoplasia, horizontal labial fissures, a thin upper lip, crowded teeth, an ogival palate, retrognathia, and a wide neck. Additional physical abnormalities included kyphosis, lumbar scoliosis, pectus carinatum, cubitus valgus, thenar and hypothenar hypoplasia, bilateral hallux valgus, shortening of the Achilles tendon on the left foot, and hypoplasia of the labia minora. Chromosomal analysis identified a ring 14 chromosome with breakpoints in p11 and q32.33. An aCGH study revealed a ~ 1.7 Mb deletion on chromosome 14qter, encompassing 23 genes. Genomic instability was evidenced by the presence of micronuclei and aneuploidies involving the ring and other chromosomes. CONCLUSION: The clinical features of our patient closely resembled those observed in other individuals with ring chromosome 14 syndrome. The most important point was that we were able to verify an instability of the r(14) chromosome, mainly involving anaphasic lags and its exclusion from the nucleus in the form of a micronucleus.

Ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) hydrolyses 5'AMP to adenosine and inorganic phosphate. Breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) express high CD73 levels, and this enzyme has been found to play a tumour-promoting role in breast cancer. However, no studies have sought to investigate whether CD73 has differential affinity or substrate preferences between noncancerous and cancerous breast cells. In the present study, we aimed to biochemically characterise ecto-5'-nucleotidase in breast cancer cell lines and assess whether its catalytic function and tumour progression are correlated in breast cancer cells. The results showed that compared to nontumoral breast MCF-10A cells, triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells had a higher ecto-5'-nucleotidase expression level and enzymatic activity. Although ecto-5'-nucleotidase activity in the MDA-MB-231 cell line showed no selectivity among monophosphorylated substrates, 5'AMP was preferred by the MCF-10A cell line. Compared to the MCF-10A cell line, the MDA-MB-231 cell line has better hydrolytic ability, lower substrate affinity, and high inhibitory potential after treatment with a specific CD73 inhibitor α,ß­methylene ADP (APCP). Therefore, we demonstrated that a specific inhibitor of the ecto-5-nucleotidase significantly reduced the migratory and invasive capacity of MDA-MB-231 cells, suggesting that ecto-5-nucleotidase activity might play an important role in metastatic progression.

Human papillomavirus 16 (HPV 16) infection is associated with several types of cancer, such as head and neck, cervical, anal, and penile cancer. Its oncogenic potential is due to the ability of the E6 and E7 oncoproteins to promote alterations associated with cell transformation. HPV 16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins increase metabolic reprogramming, one of the hallmarks of cancer, by increasing the stability of hypoxia-induced factor 1 α (HIF-1α) and consequently increasing the expression levels of their target genes. In this report, by bioinformatic analysis, we show the possible effect of HPV 16 oncoproteins E6 and E7 on metabolic reprogramming in cancer through the E6-E7-PHD2-VHL-CUL2-ELOC-HIF-1α axis. We proposed that E6 and E7 interact with VHL, CUL2, and ELOC in forming the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that ubiquitinates HIF-1α for degradation via the proteasome. Based on the information found in the databases, it is proposed that E6 interacts with VHL by blocking its interaction with HIF-1α. On the other hand, E7 interacts with CUL2 and ELOC, preventing their binding to VHL and RBX1, respectively. Consequently, HIF-1α is stabilized and binds with HIF-1ß to form the active HIF1 complex that binds to hypoxia response elements (HREs), allowing the expression of genes related to energy metabolism. In addition, we suggest an effect of E6 and E7 at the level of PHD2, VHL, CUL2, and ELOC gene expression. Here, we propose some miRNAs targeting PHD2, VHL, CUL2, and ELOC mRNAs. The effect of E6 and E7 may be the non-hydroxylation and non-ubiquitination of HIF-1α, which may regulate metabolic processes involved in metabolic reprogramming in cancer upon stabilization, non-degradation, and translocation to the nucleus.

Microorganisms with multiple ecological functions can be a useful biotechnological resource in integrated pest- and disease-management programs. This work aimed to investigate the potential endophytic and virulent effects of a strain of Purpureocillium lilacinum on organic cultivation in Brazil. Specifically, the strain's ability to establish itself as an endophyte in common bean, soybean, and sunflower plants when inoculated via seed was evaluated. Furthermore, its antifungal activity against phytopathogens and its pathogenicity and virulence against insects of the order Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera were evaluated. Furthermore, the strain was evaluated for its biochemical and physiological characteristics. For virulence bioassays, the experiments were conducted under a factorial scheme (2 × 3), with the following factors: (a) fungal inoculation and control without inoculum and (b) types of inocula (blastospores, aerial conidia, and metabolites). The treatments were sprayed on insect species at different stages of development. In summary, it was found that the SBF054 strain endophytically colonized the common bean, with partial recovery from the root tissues of soybean and sunflower plants, 30 days after inoculation; suppressed 86% of Rhizoctonia solani mycelial growth in an in vitro assay; and controlled eggs, nymphs, and Euschistus heros adults. These multifunctional abilities are mainly attributed to the strain's mechanisms of producing metabolites, such as organic acids, soluble nutrients, and hydrolytic enzymes.

This review explores the historical and current significance of gestures as a universal form of communication with a focus on hand gestures in virtual reality applications. It highlights the evolution of gesture detection systems from the 1990s, which used computer algorithms to find patterns in static images, to the present day where advances in sensor technology, artificial intelligence, and computing power have enabled real-time gesture recognition. The paper emphasizes the role of hand gestures in virtual reality (VR), a field that creates immersive digital experiences through the Ma blending of 3D modeling, sound effects, and sensing technology. This review presents state-of-the-art hardware and software techniques used in hand gesture detection, primarily for VR applications. It discusses the challenges in hand gesture detection, classifies gestures as static and dynamic, and grades their detection difficulty. This paper also reviews the haptic devices used in VR and their advantages and challenges. It provides an overview of the process used in hand gesture acquisition, from inputs and pre-processing to pose detection, for both static and dynamic gestures.

HPV 16 integration is crucial for the onset and progression of premalignant lesions to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC) because it promotes the amplification of proto-oncogenes and the silencing of tumor suppressor genes; some of these are proteins with PDZ domains involved in homeostasis and cell polarity. Through a bioinformatics approach based on interaction networks, a group of proteins associated with HPV 16 infection, PDZ domains, and direct physical interaction with E6 and related to different hallmarks of cancer were identified. MAGI-1 was selected to evaluate the expression profile and subcellular localization changes in premalignant lesions and ISCC with HPV 16 in an integrated state in cervical cytology; the profile expression of MAGI-1 diminished according to lesion grade. Surprisingly, in cell lines CaSki and SiHa, the protein localization was cytoplasmic and nuclear. In contrast, in histological samples, a change in subcellular localization from the cytoplasm in low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) to the nucleus in the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) was observed; in in situ carcinomas and ISCC, MAGI-1 expression was absent. In conclusion, MAGI-1 expression could be a potential biomarker for distinguishing those cells with normal morphology but with HPV 16 integrated from those showing morphology-related uterine cervical lesions associated with tumor progression.
