Parental support is instrumental in protecting the mental health of trans and nonbinary youth (TNB). Yet minimal measures exist that measure parental support, and current measures typically measure parental attitudes or general perceptions of supportiveness rather than measuring specific TNB-affirming behaviors. This study aimed to fill this gap by developing and validating the Trans- and Nonbinary-Affirming Parental Practices scale. The scale items were developed based on existing psychological literature on TNB-affirming parenting behaviors as well as adapting existing measures. The sample consisted of 570 parents or caregivers of TNB youth ages 5-27 (M = 15). The vast majority of participants were White (90%) and cisgender women (92%). The sample was randomly split to conduct both exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Factor analysis found good fit for a four-factor structure with 14 items. Each subscale represented a type of TNB-affirming parental behavior: communicating support, affirming language, advocating for their TNB child, and seeking affirming resources. The measure demonstrated invariance with both heterosexual participants and participants with minoritized sexual identities and demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity. The Trans- and Nonbinary-Affirming Parental Practices measure can be useful in intervention research aimed at increasing TNB-affirming behaviors among parents and caregivers of TNB youth. Resilience is often viewed as the ability to bounce back from challenges. This conceptualization tends to be individualistic and can be less fitting for marginalized communities. Research with transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals has shown that resilience can manifest in various ways, such as developing pride in one's identity, connection to a TGD community, or advocating against oppression. Given these conflicting views, we sought to (1) describe common themes in TGD people's experience of resilience by pooling information from qualitative research; and (2) evaluate how well quantitative measures of resilience reflected the ways that TGD people define resilience in qualitative research. We reviewed articles published from January 2010 to January 2020. Our search for research on resilience in TGD samples revealed 33 quantitative articles and 17 qualitative articles. We developed a codebook from the qualitative articles by retrieving information about themes from these past studies (e.g., developing motivation and agency, pride or positive self-image). We also reviewed the quantitative studies and retrieved the measures used to assess resilience, followed by coding these scales to understand whether the themes from the qualitative data were reflected in the quantitative measures of resilience. Overall, themes related to social support were common across the measures. However, other themes were not reflected in any measures, such as self-definition of gender, hope, and self-advocacy. Our research demonstrates the discrepancy between qualitative research on TGD resilience and quantitative measurement of resilience. Measure development that more fully reflects TGD people's experiences is key to advancing this research.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color experience high rates of mental health disorders, yet they experience challenges to accessing mental health services. Community health worker (CHW) models of care have potential to promote equitable mental health services among LGBTQ youth. Our aim was to understand how CHW models could be adapted to better support LGBTQ youth of color in accessing mental health services. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with LGBTQ youth of color (n = 16), caregivers of LGBTQ youth (n = 11), and CHWs (n = 15) in Massachusetts and California. Interviews were coded by 8 members of the research team. A Rapid Qualitative Analysis was conducted to identify themes. Caregivers, youth, and CHWs all endorsed the value of CHW models for this population. They also almost universally suggested multiple adaptations are needed for the model to be effective. Four main categories of themes emerged related to intervention adaptations: (1) Why adaptations are needed for LGBTQ youth, (2) Who should serve as CHWs providing care, (3) How CHWs should be trained, and (4) What content needs to be included in the intervention. Broadly, findings suggest the relevance of having CHW models for LGBTQ youth of color to address stigma and discrimination experienced, access to culturally and linguistically relevant services, and the need for caregiver support of LGBTQ youth. CHWs need increased training in these areas.

Minimal research has examined the experiences of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people in graduate school with no studies to date examining the experiences of TNB students in psychology graduate programs. The purpose of this study was to utilize a critical-ideological paradigm to identify recruitment, retention, and attrition factors for TNB people in counseling psychology (CP) programs with the aim of providing specific recommendations to CP programs. Individual interviews (between 35 and 70 min) were conducted with a sample of 16 TNB graduate students, aged 23-37-years old (M = 26.9, SD = 3.84), in masters (n = 6) and doctoral (n = 10) CP programs. Participants were nonbinary (n = 13) and trans men (n = 3), the majority were White (n = 10), and all were sexual minorities. Participants were recruited online through email listservs and on social media posts on Facebook and Twitter. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed themes related to challenges experienced in CP programs (systemic/structural challenges, interpersonal challenges, individual/internal challenges) and strengths of or recommendations for CP programs (transaffirming resources/policies, supporting TNB competence and expertise, being a TNB accomplice). Several unique subthemes emerged across the seven themes. Findings may be applied by CP programs to more effectively recruit and retain TNB people, and collectively contribute to an increasing number of TNB people within this field. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth in the United States are met with systemic barriers that affect their physical and mental health. Recent scholarship has found that TGD youth have been negatively impacted as a result of antitransgender federal, state, and local laws and bills. Given the crucial role of parental figures in the well-being of TGD youth (e.g., supporting their child's health-care decisions), parents can provide important insight about the experiences of their children as they navigate the effects of antitransgender legislation. This study aimed to explore parental figures' perceptions of how bans on gender affirming care affect their TGD child and parental figures' advice for legislators/policymakers regarding the impact of these laws and bills on the well-being of TGD youth. Responses to an online survey with 134 self-identified parental figures of TGD youth were analyzed. Thematic analysis revealed five themes regarding the impact that these antitransgender laws and bills have on TGD youth, including (a) depression and suicidal ideation/risk of suicide, (b) anxiety, (c) increased gender dysphoria, (d) decreased safety and increased stigma, and (e) lack of access to medical care. Parental figures also provided direct feedback to legislators/policymakers regarding the impact of these laws and bills on the well-being of TGD youth, including (a) transgender youth health is not a political issue, (b) decriminalize gender affirming medical care, (c) decrease discrimination and violence against transgender people, and (d) become educated on transgender health-care issues. This study explored how 30 trans graduate students made decisions regarding graduate school. Specifically, it examined how the students chose their graduate program and, secondarily, how they chose their field, what led them to apply to graduate school, and their outness during the application process. In selecting a program, participants considered contextual and personal factors that encompassed commonly cited academic and pragmatic circumstances (e.g., reputation; cost) and factors salient to their gender identity, including state and university climate. Participants identified a number of tensions in choosing a program (e.g., whether to prioritize academic factors over program climate)-although some could not prioritize program climate because their field (e.g., STEM) was not LGBTQ savvy. In applying to graduate school, participants weighed the benefits of being out as trans (e.g., authenticity; finding a "good fit") and risks (e.g., discrimination). Findings have implications for higher education administrators, career counselors, clinicians, and researchers.

We refined and replicated an efficacious brief intervention to reduce internalized homonegativity (IH) with a sample of gay and exclusively same-sex attracted men recruited from outside of LGBT community networks using Amazon Mechanical Turk. We sought to 1) determine if levels of IH differed between the original study's community-based sample and our non-community-based sample, 2) examine the efficacy of the replicated intervention, and 3) assess for longitudinal effects of the intervention at a 30-day follow-up. Four hundred eighty-four participants completed either the intervention or a stress management control condition. Mean levels of IH were higher in the current sample compared with the earlier study's community sample. The intervention was efficacious at reducing global IH, reducing personal homonegativity, and increasing gay affirmation. Ninety-six participants completed the follow-up; follow-up results were not significant and may have been affected by high rates of attrition. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) may benefit from psychological interventions tailored to specific subpopulations (e.g., lesbians, gay men, bisexual people, transgender people) given differing experiences with stigma. However, determining the inclusion/exclusion process for subpopulation-specific interventions is challenging and recommendations for this process are scarce. We developed and evaluated a matching procedure to place 1183 SGM participants into four targeted online interventions designed to reduce internalized stigma for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. We evaluated participant attrition, efficacy, satisfaction with placement, and qualitative feedback across the four interventions. Results indicated that our matching procedure was time-efficient and largely successful in terms of low attrition, high satisfaction, and reaching segments of the SGM population not usually captured with the LGBT acronym. Based on these findings, we offer six practical guidelines for devising the inclusion/exclusion process or matching procedure for future subpopulation-specific SGM interventions studies.
