BACKGROUND: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been the cornerstone for managing acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) with hypercapnic respiratory failure. Nasal high flow (NHF) oxygen therapy has emerged as a potential alternative, offering a more tolerable modality with promising outcomes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether NHF respiratory support is noninferior to NIV with respect to treatment failure, in patients with mild-to-moderate hypercapnic AECOPD. METHODS: In this multi-center, randomized, noninferiority trial, 105 patients with AECOPD and respiratory failure type II were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either NHF therapy or NIV. The primary endpoint was the frequency of treatment failure, defined as the need for intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation or a switch to the alternative treatment group. Secondary endpoints included changes in respiratory parameters, patient comfort indicators, and the occurrence of complications. RESULTS: The findings revealed no significant difference in the primary outcome between the groups, with a treatment failure rate of 19.6 % (10 out of 51) in the NHF group and 14.8 % (8 out of 54) in the NIV group. Interestingly, NHF users reported significantly lower levels of dyspnea and discomfort at multiple follow-up points. Despite the differences in patient comfort, respiratory parameters such as respiratory rate, arterial blood gases, and use of accessory muscles of respiration showed no significant disparities between the groups throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS: NHF therapy was similar to NIV in preventing treatment failure among patients with hypercapnic AECOPD, offering a viable alternative with enhanced comfort. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was prospectively registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT03466385) on March 15, 2018.

In the present study, we conducted a scoping review to provide an overview of the existing literature on the carbocyanine dye DiI, in human neuroanatomical tract tracing. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched. We identified 61 studies published during the last three decades. While studies incorporated specimens across human life from the embryonic stage onwards, the majority of studies focused on adult human tissue. Studies that utilized peripheral nervous system (PNS) tissue were a minority, with the majority of studies focusing on the central nervous system (CNS). The most common topic of interest in previous tract tracing investigations was the connectivity of the visual pathway. DiI crystals were more commonly applied. Nevertheless, several studies utilized DiI in a paste or dissolved form. The maximum tracing distance and tracing speed achieved was, respectively, 70 mm and 1 mm/h. We identified studies that focused on optimizing tracing efficacy by varying parameters such as fixation, incubation temperature, dye re-application, or the application of electric fields. Additional studies aimed at broadening the scope of DiI use by assessing the utility of archival tissue and compatibility of tissue clearing in DiI applications. A combination of DiI tracing and immunohistochemistry in double-labeling studies have been shown to provide the means for assessing connectivity of phenotypically defined human CNS and PNS neuronal populations.

BACKGROUND: Patients with COVID-19 can rapidly deteriorate and develop acute hypoxic respiratory failure. Prominent features of the disease include severe inflammation, endotheliitis, and thrombosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic effectiveness of ischemia modified albumin (ΙΜΑ) in a cohort of COVID-19 patients. METHODS: This prospective observational study included adults with SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test, who were hospitalized specifically for COVID-19. The outcomes of interest were progression to severe acute respiratory failure during the index hospitalization defined as partial pressure of oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen lower or equal to 150, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and in-hospital mortality. Admission IMA levels were determined using the commercially available "IMA Assay Kit" method (Abbexa LTD, Cambridge, UK). Adults without SARS-CoV-2 infection were used as controls. RESULTS: 135 COVID-19 patients and 64 controls were included. Admission IMA levels were significantly higher in COVID-19 patients compared to controls [[24.38 (11.94) ng/ml vs. 14.69 (3.52) ng/ml, p < 0.01]. Receiver operating characteristic analysis of admission IMA showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 94% (p < 0.0001) for COVID-19 diagnosis (cut-off value: 17.5 ng/ml; sensitivity: 90.37%; specificity: 87.5%). Admission IMA was also associated with mortality (AUC: 68%, p = 0.01). However, it was not associated with severe acute respiratory failure (AUC: 47%, p = 0.53) or ICU admission (AUC: 58%, p = 0.41). CONCLUSION: Admission IMA was significantly increased in COVID-19 patients and was associated with in-hospital mortality.

Objective The current retrospective angiographic study establishes the rates of variants in the distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) in a sample of the Greek population. Methods Data were collected from 456 patients who underwent two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of the carotid and vertebral arteries bilaterally. The study focused on patients with good visualization of the anterior and posterior circulations and employed magnetic resonance (MR) or computed tomography (CT) angiography for 3D reconstruction. The anterior cerebral artery (ACA) was classified into one of its two basic configurations, that is, with or without the callosomarginal artery (CMA). The bihemispheric, median, and azygos ACA patterns were also identified. Results The majority (373/456, 81.8%) exhibited a typical DACA pattern. The bihemispheric, median, and azygos patterns were identified in 66/456 (14.5%), 10/456 (2.2%), and 7/456 (1.5%), respectively. The CMA was present in 824/912 (90.4%) of the hemispheres, with a trend toward male predominance for bilateral presence (males: 167/192, 86.98%; females: 210/264, 79.55%; p = 0.05). In particular, the CMA was present significantly more frequently (p = 0.002) in the left hemispheres of male patients. Gender differences in CMA presence persisted in the analysis of the patients with a typical DACA pattern. Conclusion This study provides insights into the variations of the DACA in the Greek population. The observed gender differences in CMA rates suggest potential morphological variations in cerebral vasculature between males and females and contribute to a better understanding of vascular anatomy for clinical and surgical applications.

Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) has been implicated in several human cancers. This review aims at mapping the available literature on the involvement of ALK in non-glial tumors localized in the posterior cranial fossa and at identifying diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic considerations. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, studies were included if they investigated ALK's role in primary CNS, non-glial tumors located in the posterior cranial fossa. A total of 210 manuscripts were selected for full-text review and 16 finally met the inclusion criteria. The review included 55 cases of primary, intracranial neoplasms with ALK genetic alterations and/or protein expression, located in the posterior fossa, comprising of medulloblastoma, anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, histiocytosis, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, and intracranial myxoid mesenchymal tumors. ALK pathology was investigated via immunohistochemistry or genetic analysis. Several studies provided evidence for potential diagnostic and prognostic value for ALK assessment as well as therapeutic efficacy in its targeting. The available findings on ALK in posterior fossa tumors are limited. Nevertheless, previous findings suggest that ALK assessment is of diagnostic and prognostic value in medulloblastoma (WNT-activated). Interestingly, a substantial proportion of ALK-positive/altered CNS histiocytoses thus far identified have been localized in the posterior fossa. The therapeutic potential of ALK inhibition in histiocytosis warrants further investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is associated with a high percentage of misdiagnosis and poor prognosis. Biomarkers could be useful in the identification, treatment/management guidance, and outcome improvement of SAH patients. The current systematic review aims to investigate the potential role of biomarkers GFAP (Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein) and UCH-L1 (Ubiquitin C-Terminal Hydrolase L1) in the diagnosis and prognosis of non-traumatic SAH. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted from their inception through February 2023. RESULTS: 17 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The vast majority of the included studies (82%) were on GFAP. Most studies used blood and/or CSF samples and incorporated multiple measurements through the initial hospitalization days. The majority of identified studies reported significantly higher levels of GFAP and UCHL1 in SAH patients with poor outcomes. There was notable variation in the specimen type and the timing of sampling. CONCLUSION: Quantification of GFAP and UCHL1 through the initial days of hospitalization shows promise in the prediction of SAH patient outcomes. Further research is nevertheless warranted to confirm these findings and further clarify the use of the two biomarkers in SAH diagnosis and the prediction of severity and secondary events.

STUDY DESIGN: This study constitutes a systematic review of the literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify and present all available studies that report on the costs of osteobiologics used in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). METHODS: The literature was systematically reviewed to identify studies with specific inclusion criteria: (1) randomized controlled trials and observational studies, (2) in adult patients, (3) with herniated disc(s) or degenerative cervical spine disease, (4) reporting on either direct or indirect costs of using specific osteobiologics in an ACDF operation. (5) Only studies in English were included. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the MINORS and RoB 2.0 tools. RESULTS: Overall, 14 articles were included; one randomized controlled trial and 13 observational studies. The most commonly used osteobiologics other than autograft/iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) were allograft and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). None of the studies was reported to be industry-supported. There was considerable heterogeneity on the reported costs. Overall, most studies reported on surgery-related costs, such as anesthesia, operating room, surgical materials and surgeon's fee. Only two studies, both using allograft, reported the exact cost of the osteobiologic used (450 GBP, $700). Some of the studies reported on the cost of care during hospitalization for the surgical operation, such as radiology studies, emergency room costs, cardiologic evaluation, laboratory studies, pharmacy costs, and room costs. Only a few studies reported on the cost of follow-up, reoperation, and physical therapy and rehabilitation. CONCLUSION: Based on the data of this current systematic review, no recommendations can be made regarding the cost-effectiveness of using osteobiologics in ACDF. Given the high costs of osteobiologics, this remains a topic of importance. The design of future studies on the subject should include cost effectiveness.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are common amongst neurosurgeons and can affect a surgeon's ability to operate. Performing surgical ergonomics research is important to minimize the prevalence and effect of WMSDs on the surgeons. The aim of this review is to highlight some of the most important objective and subjective tools available for surgical ergonomics research. Subjective tools can be divided into three categories: (1) questionnaires (either validated or non-validated) filled out by the participants, (2) survey assessments/standardized scoring systems filled out by the researchers, and (3) video analysis. Subjective tools have the drawbacks of recall bias and intra-rater and inter-rater variability. Some of the most important objective tools available are surface electromyography, force plate/pressure sensors analysis, inertial measurement units (IMUs) and kinematics data capturing using reflective markers. Although these modalities do not have the drawbacks that hinder the use of subjective tools, using most of them in the real-life operating theatre, with the exception of IMUs, is challenging. Conducting surgical ergonomics research is important to optimize the performance of neurosurgeons. The advancements towards wearable, wireless technologies will make it easier for surgeons to perform ergonomics research in the operating room.

Introduction: To date, the available guidance on venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in elective lumbar fusion surgery is largely open to surgeon interpretation and preference without any specific suggested chemoprophylactic regimen. Research question: This study aimed to comparatively analyze the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) with the use of commonly employed chemoprophylactic agents such as unfractionated heparin (UH) and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in lumbar fusion surgery. Material and methods: An independent systematic review of four scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, clinicaltrials.gov, Web of Science) was performed to identify relevant articles as per the preferred reporting in systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies reporting on DVT/PE outcomes of lumbar fusion surgery in adult patients with UH or LMWH chemoprophylaxis were included for analysis. Analysis was performed using the Stata software. Results: Twelve studies with 8495 patients were included in the analysis. A single-arm meta-analysis of the included studies found a DVT incidence of 14% (95%CI [8%-20%]) and 1% (95%CI [-6% - 8%]) with LMWH and UH respectively. Both the chemoprophylaxis agents prevented PE with a noted incidence of 0% (95%CI [0%-0.1%]) and 0% (95%CI [0%-1%]) with LMWH and UH respectively. The risk of bleeding-related complications with the usage of LMWH and UH was 0% (95% CI [0.0%-0.30%]) and 3% (95% CI [0.3%-5%]) respectively. Discussion and conclusion: Both LMWH and UH reduces the overall incidence of DVT/PE, but there is a paucity of evidence analyzing the comparative effectiveness of the chemoprophylaxis regimens in lumbar fusion procedures. The heterogeneity in data prevents any conclusions, as there remains an evidence gap. We recommend future high-quality randomized controlled trials to investigate in this regard to help develop recommendations on thromboprophylaxis usage.

Background: Thoracolumbar junction fractures (TLJFs) attract controversy for several parameters, including surgery versus conservative treatment, fusion versus stabilization, open versus percutaneous surgery, construct length, and downstream metalwork extraction. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this pilot study was to assess the effectiveness of surgical treatment in patients with burst (AO Classification Type A4) TLJFs using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and evaluate and compare different PROMs in this clinical scenario. Materials and Methods: Patient records of consecutive patients who underwent posterior stabilization surgery for TLJFs were retrospectively reviewed. Data were collected on demographics, medical and social history, neurological examination, and postoperative complications. Telephone interviews and a combined PROM methodology (Numerical Rating Scale [NRS], EuroQol [EQ]-5D-5L, and Oswestry Disability Index [ODI]) were utilized to assess the effectiveness of intervention. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze exposure variables and outcome measures. Spearman's rank correlation was used for the outcome measures. Results: Thirteen patients were included. The mean age was 42 ± 16 years; the male: female ratio was 8:5; the mean follow-up was 18.9 ± 6.4 months. The mean NRS score was 3.3 ± 2.5, in line with a median score of 2 (2) on EQ-5D-5L pain/discomfort scale. Statistically significant correlations were found between several PROMs: pain-EQ-5D-5L and NRS (rs = 0.8, P = 0.002), pain-EQ-5D-5L and ODI (rs = 0.8, P = 0.001), usual anxiety/depression-EQ-5D-5L, and ODI (rs = 0.7, P = 0.008). Conclusion: A combined PROM methodology showed supportive evidence for safety and efficacy in the surgical stabilization of burst TLJFs. This alleviated significant pain and prevented neurological deficit and major disability. The preliminary widespread correlation between these PROMs supports further larger studies of their combined use in clinical practice, to measure the outcomes of spine trauma patients.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) patients often report an affected quality of life (QoL). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the QoL of patients with MG in Greece using a specific tool. A cross-sectional online survey was performed. Adult patients were invited to participate. A questionnaire incorporating the MG-QOL15r scale was distributed, following its translation and cultural adaptation into Greek. Overall, 99 valid responses were submitted. The median age (interquartile range) of the participants was 48.50 (13.50) years and 76.80% were females. One third of the patients mentioned that they could not work/changed jobs after their diagnosis (28.30%) and that they face severe restriction of their everyday activities (26.30%). The mean MG-QOL15r score was 13.50 ± 7.70. Patients with important restriction of everyday activities (p < 0.01), patients with more pronounced need of emotional support (p < 0.01), patients with generalized MG (p < 0.01) and patients with myasthenic crises (p < 0.01) reported lower QoL. This study is the first to report on the affected QoL of the Greek population with MG using the MG-QoL15r scale. Further work should be done to incorporate the routine evaluation of QoL in the care of patients with MG.

BACKGROUND: The Lazarus phenomenon or autoresuscitation (autoROSC) is the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after the termination of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts. PURPOSE: The purpose of the current scoping review is to present the available data in the literature regarding autoROSC. METHODS: We reviewed four scientific databases to identify all studies which reported autoROSC cases in patients who underwent CPR. We then extracted all information relevant to CPR and autoROSC. The review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. RESULTS: We identified 66 studies describing 76 autoROSC cases. The majority of cardiac arrests were in-hospital (44, 57.89%). Median time from termination of CPR to autoROSC was 5 min. Regarding the outcome, 52 (77.61%) patients died and 11 (14.47%) patients had intact neurological outcome. A higher mortality rate was identified in patients with respiratory comorbidities. Overall, 24 (31.58%) patients survived. CONCLUSION: AutoROSC is probably an under-reported event in the medical community. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the phenomenon and actively monitor for it, when appropriate.

BACKGROUND: The derivatives-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and plasma antioxidant capacity (PAT) tests are oxidative indexes. Severe asthma has been related to oxidative stress. We aimed to investigate d-ROMs and PAT values in severely controlled asthmatics and the correlation of these values with lung function. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from severely controlled asthmatics and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 min. The supernatant was collected. The assays were performed within three hours of collection. The fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and spirometry were determined. Symptom control was recorded using the asthma control test (ACT). RESULTS: Approximately 40 patients with severe controlled asthma (75%: women), mean age of 62 ± 12 years, were recruited. Approximately 5% had obstructive spirometry. The IOS revealed airway abnormalities even though the spirometric results were within the normal range, with it being more sensitive than spirometry. The D-ROMs and PAT test values were higher than normal, indicating oxidative stress in severe asthmatics with controlled asthma. D-ROMs were positively correlated with R20 values, indicating central airway resistance. CONCLUSIONS: The IOS technique revealed an otherwise hidden airway obstruction with spirometry. The D-ROMs and PAT tests revealed a high level of oxidative stress in severe controlled asthmatics. D-ROMs correlate with R20, indicating central airway resistance.

While bilateral stimulation of the anterior thalamic nuclei remains the only approved deep brain stimulation (DBS) option for focal epilepsy, two additional thalamic targets have been proposed. Earlier work indicated the potential of centromedian thalamic nucleus stimulation with recent findings highlighting the medial pulvinar nucleus. The latter has been shown to exhibit electrophysiological and imaging alterations in patients with partial status epilepticus and temporal lobe epilepsy. On this basis, recent studies have begun assessing the feasibility and efficacy of pulvinar stimulation, with encouraging results on the reduction of seizure frequency and severity. Building on existing neuroanatomical knowledge, indicating that the medial pulvinar is connected to the temporal lobe via the temporopulvinar bundle of Arnold, we hypothesize that this is one of the routes through which medial pulvinar stimulation affects temporal lobe structures. We suggest that further anatomic, imaging, and electrophysiologic studies are warranted to deepen our understanding of the subject and guide future clinical applications.

INTRODUCTION: The formation of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has been associated with genetic polymorphisms. A few genome-wide (GWAS) and candidate gene association studies (CGAS) have reported that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in locus 9p21 have been associated with the formation of IAs. MATERIALS & METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of case-control studies to investigate the association of two SNPs (rs1333040, rs10757278), located at the 9p21 locus, with the formation of IAs. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar and CENTRAL databases were comprehensively searched. RESULTS: For the rs1333040 (C > T) polymorphism, a significant association with IA was observed in the dominant [OR (95% CI): 1.39 (1.24, 1.56); Pz < 0.00001], recessive [OR (95% CI): 1.38 (1.28, 1.49); Pz < 0.00001] and over-dominant [OR (95% CI): 0.85 (0.79, 0.91); Pz < 0.00001] models. For the rs10757278(A > G) SNP, we observed a statistically significant association with IAs in the dominant [OR (95% CI): 1.41 (1.28, 1.56); Pz < 0.01] and recessive [OR (95% CI): 1.42 (1.29, 1.56); Pz < 0.01] models, while statistical significance was not revealed in the over-dominant model [OR (95% CI): 1.01 (0.93, 1.10); Pz=0.83]. DISCUSSION: A possible association between the two SNPs and IAs was indicated. The associations reported by our meta-analysis need to be further studied and validated by larger CGAS and GWAS.

Study Design: Bibliometric analysis. Objectives: This study aimed to highlight the 200 most influential articles related to traumatic spinal cord and spinal column injuries and provide an insight of past and current global trends in spinal trauma research. Methods: The Web of Science database was used to identify the top 200 most cited articles on the topic of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and spinal column injuries between using a prespecified algorithm. The articles were manually reviewed; bibliometrics were collected on title, first and corresponding authors' country, institution, journal, publication year, and citation data. Results: The search string yielded 30,551 articles during 1977-2019. The average time from the publication was 19.5 years. A total of 1356 authors contributed to 67 different journals, the top 200 most cited articles amassing a total of 88,115 citations and an average 440.6 citations. The United States of America (USA) contributed the most with 110 articles; the top institution was the University of Toronto with 34 publications. Most studies focused on basic science research on SCI. Keyword analysis revealed the most commonly used keywords: SCI, inflammation, apoptosis, incidence/prevalence, and regeneration; four word-clusters were identified. Institutions from the USA and Canada collaborated the most and two major and two minor institutional collaboration subnetworks were identified. Co-citation analysis detected three main clusters of authors. Conclusion: This overview of the most cited articles on traumatic spinal cord and spinal column injuries provides insight into the international spinal trauma community and the terrain in this field, potentially acting as a springboard for further collaboration development.

INTRODUCTION: The most clinically useful concept in asthma is based on the intensity of treatment required to achieve good asthma control. Biomarkers to guide therapy are needed. AIMS: To investigate the role of circulating levels of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor suPAR as a marker for asthma severity. METHODS: We recruited patients evaluated at the Asthma Clinic, University of Thessaly, Greece. Asthma severity and control were defined according to the GINA strategy and Asthma Contro Test (ACT). Anthropometrics, spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), suPAR, blood cell count, c-reactive protein (CRP), and analyses of kidney and liver function were obtained. Patients with a history of inflammatory, infectious, or malignant disease or other lung disease, more than 5 pack years of smoking history, or corticosteroid therapy were excluded. RESULTS: We evaluated 74 asthma patients (69% female, mean age 57 ± 17 years, mean body mass index (BMI) 29 ± 6 kg/m2). In total, 24%, 13%, 6%, 5%, 29% and 23% of the participants had mild well-controlled, mild uncontrolled, moderate well-controlled, moderate uncontrolled, severe well-controlled, and severe uncontrolled asthma, respectively. Overall, 67% had T2-high asthma, 26% received biologics (15% and 85% received omalizumab and mepolizumab, respectively), and 34% had persistent airway obstruction. suPAR levels were significantly lower in asthmatics with moderate uncontrolled asthma than in patients with severe uncontrolled asthma without (2.1 ± 0.4 vs. 3.3 ± 0.7 ng/mL, p = 0.023) or with biologics (2.1 ± 0.4 vs. 3.6 ± 0.8 ng/mL, p = 0.029). No correlations were found between suPAR levels and age, BMI, T2 biomarkers, CRP, or spirometric parameters. CONCLUSIONS: suPAR levels were higher in asthmatics with severe disease than in those with moderate uncontrolled asthma.

Fine particulate matter that have a diameter of <2.5 µm (PM2.5) are an important factor of anthropogenic pollution since they are associated with the development of acute respiratory illnesses. The aim of this prospective study is to examine the correlation between PM2.5 levels in the semi-urban city of Volos and Emergency Department (ED) visits for respiratory causes. ED visits from patients with asthma, pneumonia and upper respiratory infection (URI) were recorded during a one-year period. The 24 h PM2.5 pollution data were collected in a prospective manner by using twelve fully automated air quality monitoring stations. PM2.5 levels exceeded the daily limit during 48.6% of the study period, with the mean PM2.5 concentration being 30.03 ± 17.47 µg/m3. PM2.5 levels were significantly higher during winter. When PM2.5 levels were beyond the daily limit, there was a statistically significant increase in respiratory-related ED visits (1.77 vs. 2.22 visits per day; p: 0.018). PM2.5 levels were also statistically significantly related to the number of URI-related ED visits (0.71 vs. 0.99 visits/day; p = 0.01). The temperature was negatively correlated with ED visits (r: −0.21; p < 0.001) and age was found to be positively correlated with ED visits (r: 0.69; p < 0.001), while no statistically significant correlation was found concerning humidity (r: 0.03; p = 0.58). In conclusion, PM2.5 levels had a significant effect on ED visits for respiratory causes in the city of Volos.

RESUMO

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a rather common cardiovascular disorder constituting one of the major manifestations of venous thromboembolism (VTE). It is associated with high mortality and substantial recurrence rates, and its diagnosis may be challenging, especially in patients with respiratory comorbidities. Therefore, providing a prompt and accurate diagnosis for PE through developing highly sensitive and specific diagnostic algorithms would be of paramount importance. There is sound evidence supporting the use of biomarkers to enhance the diagnosis and predict the recurrence risk in patients with PE. Therefore, several novel biomarkers, such as factor VIII, Ischemia Modified Albumin, and fibrinogen, as well as several MicroRNAs and microparticles, have been investigated for the diagnosis of this clinical entity. The present review targets to comprehensively present the literature regarding the novel diagnostic biomarkers for PE, as well as to discuss the evidence for their use in daily routine.
