RESUMO

Herein we report a photo-mediated formal addition of carboxylic acids to activated alkenes catalyzed by a pyrimidopteridine photoredox catalyst. The decarboxylation of aliphatic carboxylic acids upon single-electron oxidation is countered in the presence of electron-rich alkenes and a hydroacetoxylation is observed. Mechanistic proposals have been made based on CV measurements, competitive Stern-Volmer quenching and EPR experiments. Evidence that tetra-N-substituted pyrimidopteridines function as dual photoredox and hydrogen atom transfer catalyst was supported by spectroscopic means.

RESUMO

Single nanowire radial junction solar cell devices were fabricated using Si nanowires synthesized by Al-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid growth of the p(+) core (Al auto-doping) and thin film deposition of the n(+)-shell at temperatures below 650 °C. Short circuit current densities of 11.7 mA cm(-2) were measured under 1-sun AM1.5G illumination, showing enhanced optical absorption. The power conversion efficiencies were limited to < 1% by the low open circuit voltage and fill factor of the devices, which was attributed to junction shunt leakage promoted by the high p(+)/n(+) doping. This demonstration of a radial junction device represents an important advance in the use of Al-catalyzed Si nanowire growth for low cost photovoltaics.

RESUMO

Electric-field-assisted assembly has been used to place rod-shaped metal nanowires containing 4-[[2-nitro-4-(phenylethynyl) phenyl] ethynyl] benzenthiol molecules onto lithographically defined metal pads. These junctions exhibited negative differential resistance. The quantum chemical approach was used to compare the properties of Au-bonded 4-[[2-nitro-4-(phenylethynyl) phenyl] ethynyl] benzenthiol molecule and a molecule that does not exhibit the negative differential resistance, Au-bonded 4-[[4-(phenylethynyl) phenyl] ethynyl] benzenthiol. The influence of the static electric field and charge variation were modelled for both systems.

RESUMO

This article reviews theoretical and empirical issues concerning the relations of language and memory in deaf children and adults. An integration of previous studies, together with the presentation of new findings, suggests that there is an intimate relation between spoken language and memory. Either spoken language or sign language can serve as a natural mode of communication for young children (deaf or hearing), leading to normal language, social, and cognitive development. Nevertheless, variation in spoken language abilities can be shown to have a direct impact on memory span. Although the ways in which memory span can effect other cognitive processes and academic achievement are not considered in depth here, several variables that can have direct impact on the language-memory interaction are considered. These findings have clear implications for the education of deaf children.
