INTRODUCTION: Oral language skills are associated with children's later self-regulation and academic skills; in turn, self-regulation in early childhood predicts successful functioning later in life. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the separate and combined effectiveness of an oral language intervention (Enhancing Rich Conversations, ENRICH) and a self-regulation intervention (Enhancing Neurocognitive Growth with the Aid of Games and Exercise, ENGAGE) with early childhood teachers and parents for children's oral language, self-regulation and academic functioning. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Kia Timata Pai (Best Start) study is a cluster randomised controlled trial with teachers and children in approximately 140 early childhood centres in New Zealand. Centres are randomly assigned to receive either oral language intervention only (ENRICH), self-regulation intervention only (ENGAGE), both interventions (ENRICH+ENGAGE) or an active control condition. Teachers' and parents' practices and children's oral language and self-regulation development are assessed at baseline at age 1.5 years and approximately every 9 months to age 5, and academic performance at age 6. Teacher-child interactions will also be videotaped each year in a subset of the centres. Children's brain and behaviour development and parent-child interactions will be assessed every 6 months to age 6 years in a subgroup of volunteers. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The Kia Timata Pai trial and the two substudies (Video Project; Brain and Behaviour Development) have been approved by the University of Otago Human Ethics Committee (Health; H20/116), and reviewed for cultural responsiveness by: the Ngai Tahu Research Committee (University of Otago), the Maori Advisory Group (University of Auckland, Liggins Institute) and an internal cultural advisory group. Results will be disseminated in international and national peer-reviewed academic journals and communicated to local, national and international organisations serving early childhood teachers, parents and young children. More needs to be known about the benefits and risks to the development of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills in ubiquitous digital environments at school and at home. Nine to 12-year-old students (n = 186) in a 1:1 digital programme serving low SES and culturally diverse communities rated their self-regulation and social skills for both non-digital and digital contexts. Downward trends in self-regulation and related personality dimensions were found. Social skills were more variable. Students had heightened awareness of needing to self-regulate in digital contexts, rating their self-regulation lower than in non-digital contexts. High frequencies and durations of fun activities at home (e.g., posting photos or blogs, chatting, and games) were associated with lower ratings. But fun activities were associated with higher ratings of social skills in digital contexts. High levels of parental monitoring were related to higher ratings of self-regulation. These patterns reflect school-wide norms and practices (students are socialized as digital citizens) as well as more general features of socialization at home. We conclude that self-regulation and social skills are sensitive to contexts over the primary school years. Digital tools may be particularly 'impulsogenic', and students need context-specific self-regulatory strategies, but the tools create opportunities to develop valued social skills under specific conditions.

Purpose: Electromagnetic acoustic imaging (EMAI) is a hybrid imaging technique using radio-frequency irradiation to induce ultrasound (US), providing an US image in which spatial conductivity differences provide image contrast. The method is potentially clinically important in that the added diagnostic parameter has been shown to be useful in cancer detection and vascular space delineation. Approach: We report the development of coil configurations and imaging processing techniques designed to address the low signal-to-noise of EMAI and demonstrate achievable resolution and contrast in phantoms along with EMAI signals in excised animal tissue. Experiment results are compared with theoretical calculations. Results: EMAI signal intensities depend on the square of the ampere-turns in the coil radio frequency coil as predicted theoretically. Resolution is shown to be comparable to conventional US imaging with contrast and signal intensity depending on source conductivity. Optimizing signal-to-noise depends on coil design, orientation of the electromagnetic fields, and coherent processing. Conclusions: Two-dimensional EMAI images are shown to have the expected resolution of conventional US with image contrast dependent on conductivity. Achievable signal-to-noise is sufficient to form potentially clinically useful images.

This study assessed the status of te reo Maori, the indigenous language of New Zealand, in the context of New Zealand English. From a broadly representative sample of 6327 two-year-olds (Growing Up in New Zealand), 6090 mothers (96%) reported their children understood English, and 763 mothers (12%) reported their children understood Maori. Parents completed the new MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory short forms for te reo Maori (NZM: CDI sf) and New Zealand English (NZE: CDI sf). Mothers with higher education levels had children with larger vocabularies in both te reo Maori and NZ English. For English speakers, vocabulary advantages also existed for girls, first-borns, monolinguals, those living in areas of lower deprivation, and those whose mothers had no concerns about their speech and language. Because more than 99% of Maori speakers were bilingual, te reo Maori acquisition appears to be occurring in the context of the acquisition of New Zealand English.

RESUMO

Electromagnetic acoustic imaging (EMAI) is a new imaging technique that uses long-wavelength RF electromagnetic (EM) waves to induce ultrasound emission. Signal intensity and image contrast have been found to depend on spatially varying electrical conductivity of the medium in addition to conventional acoustic properties. The resultant conductivity- weighted ultrasound data may enhance the diagnostic performance of medical ultrasound in cancer and cardiovascular applications because of the known changes in conductivity of malignancy and blood-filled spaces. EMAI has a potential advantage over other related imaging techniques because it combines the high resolution associated with ultrasound detection with the generation of the ultrasound signals directly related to physiologically important electrical properties of the tissues. Here, we report the theoretical development of EMAI, implementation of a dual-mode EMAI/ultrasound apparatus, and successful demonstrations of EMAI in various phantoms designed to establish feasibility of the approach for eventual medical applications.
