RESUMO

Lack of knowledge and misinformations on HIV/AIDS are predictors of emotional responses as fear of contagion, homophobia, avoidance and excessive precautions. Fear of contagion is an affective stress response to the neurocognitive activity that leads to a perceived threat of AIDS in connection with the symbolic meanings os illness. Focused interviews were conducted with an opportunistic sample of 31 young people to know the affective responses and behaviors after blood screening for HIV antibody testing. The findings confirm the relationship of symbolic representation of illness as mystery, death, punishment and sexuality to fear of contagion and mitic conception of AIDS.

PIP: 31 occasional interviews were conducted with 10 university students and 21 detainees between 1993 and 1994 under the aegis of the AIDS research program of the University of Sao Paulo in order to verify the risk factors and transmission dynamics of HIV. Blood samples were collected to test antibodies for AIDS. The average duration of stay of students at the university was 3 years and 9 months; the average stay of the incarcerated population in jail was 3 years and 8 months. 80% of the students were 20-29 years old; 80% of the convicts were 20-34 years old. Myths, erroneous beliefs, and preconceived ideas regarding AIDS were explored, such as: 1) homosexuals, prostitutes, and drug users get AIDS; 2) condoms do not have to be used with people who are known; 3) AIDS occurs to others; and 4) AIDS can be transmitted by being in the proximity of persons infected with HIV. Deep-seated preconceived ideas and stigma about AIDS were expressed by 39.9% of the detainees and 23.5% of the students. Only 2 (11.8%) students and 2 (7.1%) convicts analyzed in a correct form risk behavior in terms of multiple partners, drug abuse, and the lack of necessary precautions. 23.5% of the students and 17.9% of the detainees said that it was not necessary to use condoms with known partners. 23.5% of the students and 7.1% of the prisoners expressed a sense of power and invulnerability. 11.8% of the students and 25.0% of the prisoners stated that the fear of contracting AIDS from being close to infected people was linked to the lack of knowledge about the modes of transmission of the disease. 76.5% of the students and 67.9% of the prisoner population stated that AIDS was something very distant, yet after getting the blood samples 50% of the students verbalized their fear of AIDS, as did 71.4% of the prisoners.
