RESUMO

Thrombosis and infection are two major complications associated with central venous catheters (CVCs), which significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality. Antifouling coating strategies currently represent an efficient approach for addressing such complications. However, existing antifouling coatings have limitations in terms of both duration and effectiveness. Herein, we propose a durable zwitterionic polymer armor for catheters. This armor is realized by pre-coating with a robust phenol-polyamine film inspired by insect sclerotization, followed by grafting of poly-2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (pMPC) via in-situ radical polymerization. The resulting pMPC coating armor exhibits super-hydrophilicity, thereby forming a highly hydrated shell that effectively prevents bacterial adhesion and inhibits the adsorption and activation of fibrinogen and platelets in vitro. In practical applications, the armored catheters significantly reduced inflammation and prevented biofilm formation in a rat subcutaneous infection model, as well as inhibited thrombus formation in a rabbit jugular vein model. Overall, our robust zwitterionic polymer coating presents a promising solution for reducing infections and thrombosis associated with vascular catheters.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sex estimate is a key stage in forensic science for identifying individuals. Some anatomical structures may be useful for sex estimation since they retain their integrity even after highly severe events. However, few studies are focusing on the Chinese population. Some researchers used teeth for sex estimation, but comparison with maxillary sinus were lack. As a result, the objective of this research is to develop a sex estimation formula for the northwestern Chinese population by the volume of the maxillary sinus and compare with the accuracy of sex estimation based on teeth through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT images from 349 samples were used to establish and verify the formula. The volume of both the left and right maxillary sinuses was measured and examined for appropriate formula coefficients. To create the formula, we randomly picked 80% of the data as the training set and 20% of the samples as the testing set. Another set of samples, including 20 males and 20 females, were used to compare the accuracy of maxillary sinuses and teeth. RESULTS: Overall, sex estimation accuracy by volume of the left maxillary sinus can reach 78.57%, while by the volume of the right maxillary sinus can reach 74.29%. The accuracy for females, which can reach 91.43% using the left maxillary sinus, was significantly higher than that for males, which was 65.71%. The result also shows that maxillary sinus volume was higher in males. The comparison with the available results using measurements of teeth for sex estimation performed by our group showed that the accuracy of sex estimation using canines volume was higher than the one using maxillary sinus volume, the accuracies based on mesiodistal diameter of canine and first molar were the same or lower than the volume of maxillary sinus. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates that measurement of maxillary sinus volume based on CBCT scans was an available and alternative method for sex estimation. And we established a method to accurately assess the sex of the northwest Chinese population. The comparison with the results of teeth measurements made the conclusion more reliable.

RESUMO

The Miao group is one of the representative Hmong-Mien-speaking populations and primarily scattered in southern China and Southeast Asia, which has experienced massive migrations in history and thus forms distinctive evolutionary genetics. Yet, the genetic explorations of Miao group are relatively limited based on complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome), especially for the Miao group from Yunnan Province (YNM). Here, we sequenced complete mitogenomes of 132 Miao individuals from Yunnan Province using massively parallel sequencing method. Total 132 Miao individuals could be allocated to 119 various haplotypes, which were mainly dominated by haplogroups prevalent in southern East Asia (B, F, M7 and R9), and rarely occupied by northern lineages (A, D, G and M8). In order to dissect the genetic background of YNM more comprehensively, we introduced 99 published population data with 7135 complete mitochondrial sequences for population genetic comparisons. YNM exhibited closer genetic relationships with Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai, Sino-Tibetan and Austroasiatic populations, especially for Hmong-Mien populations; we further speculated that Miao group might have certain direct or indirect gene exchanges with ancient Baiyue groups. Several maternal lineages, such as B5a1c1a, F1g1, B4a5 and D4e1a3, were found to be specifically shared by YNM and other Hmong-Mien populations, and these matrilineal expansions occurred roughly during the Neolithic period. Eventually, according to the population dynamic analyses of YNM, the population size began to emerge recovery âˆ¼1-0.5 kya after a long-term population reduction âˆ¼1-5 kya, during which the B5a1c1a haplogroup manifested relatively apparent lineage expansion.

RESUMO

The application of microfluidic technology in forensic medicine has steadily expanded over the last two decades due to the favorable features of low cost, rapidity, high throughput, user-friendliness, contamination-free, and minimum sample and reagent consumption. In this context, bibliometric methods were adopted to visualize the literature information contained in the Science Citation Index Expanded from 1989 to 2022, focusing on the co-occurrence analysis of forensic and microfluidic topics. A deep interpretation of the literature was conducted based on co-occurrence results, in which microfluidic technologies and their applications in forensic medicine, particularly forensic genetics, were elaborated. The purpose of this review is to provide an impartial evaluation of the utilization of microfluidic technology in forensic medicine. Additionally, the challenges and future trends of implementing microfluidic technology in forensic genetics are also addressed.

RESUMO

Sex estimation is very important in forensic applications as part of individual identification. Morphological sex estimation methods predominantly focus on anatomical measurements. Based on the close relationship between sex chromosome genes and facial characterization, craniofacial hard tissues morphology shows sex dimorphism. In order to establish a more labor-saving, rapid, and accurate reference for sex estimation, the study investigated a deep learning network-based artificial intelligence (AI) model using orthopantomograms (OPG) to estimate sex in northern Chinese subjects. In total, 10703 OPG images were divided into training (80%), validation (10%), and test sets (10%). At the same time, different age thresholds were selected to compare the accuracy differences between adults and minors. The accuracy of sex estimation using CNN (convolutional neural network) model was higher for adults (90.97%) compared with minors (82.64%). This work demonstrated that the proposed model trained with a large dataset could be used in automatic morphological sex-related identification with favorable performance and practical significance in forensic science for adults in northern China, while also providing a reference for minors to some extent.

RESUMO

To realize continuous real-time monitoring of the large-scale internal strain field of coal and rock mass, a bidirectional strain sensor based on FBGs encapsulated using a hollow cylindrical steel tube was designed. The sensor's structural parameters were optimized through unidirectional loading, and the strain change laws of the sensor were analyzed under unidirectional and bidirectional loading conditions, in which the stress-strain fitting curves of the sensor and the relationships of the strain in the vertical and horizontal directions were obtained under different lateral pressure loading conditions. A similar theoretical model was established to verify the accuracy of the linear relationship between the surrounding rock stress and the strain measured by the sensor system.

RESUMO

Short tandem repeats (STRs) play an essential role in forensic genetics due to their high degree of polymorphisms, wide distributions and easy detection method. In this study, allelic frequencies and forensic statistical parameters of the 19 autosomal STR loci in a Kazak ethnic group were calculated, and its genetic relationships with reference populations were assessed in order to understand population structure better and enrich population genetic data for forensic practice in Chinese Kazak ethnic group. There were 226 identified alleles with the corresponding allelic frequencies ranging from 0.0008 to 0.5295 in the 628 unrelated healthy Kazak individuals in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. All autosomal STRs were conformed to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium after Bonferroni's correction. The cumulative power of discrimination and the combined probability of exclusion of all the 19 autosomal STRs were 0.999 999 999 999 999 999 999 997 162 and 0.999 999 994 484, respectively. Furthermore, the D A distances and Fixation index values of pairwise populations, principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling analysis, phylogenetic tree analysis and structure analysis were conducted to probe the genetic relationships between the Kazak group and other reference populations. The population genetic results showed that these 19 autosomal STR loci were characterised by high genetic diversities in the Kazak group. Furthermore, the studied Kazak group had close genetic relationships with the Uyghur group and the Uzbek group. The present results may facilitate understanding the genetic background of the Chinese Xinjiang Kazak group.

RESUMO

Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) are expansively used in different applications and recycling the significant amounts of UPR waste is still a universal problem. Vitrimerization is a feasible, environmental-friendly, cost effective, and operative method, which can be used for recycling the crosslinked UPRs. In this method, the thermoset permanent network is changed into a dynamic network similar to the vitrimer-type polymers. The results show that the existence of a transesterification catalyst in the system significantly enhances the efficiency of vitrimerization. The vitrimerized UPR thermosets can be reprocessed three times with mechanical properties comparable to the initial UPR. The results show that the excess of external hydroxyl groups in the system can prevent the formation of zinc ligand complexes in the network and consequently reduce the crosslinked density and mechanical properties of vitrimerized samples. The vitrimerized thermoset powder can be reprocessed through injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding which are conventional thermoplastic processing techniques. The unrecyclable UPR thermoset wastes can be recycled and reused through vitrimerization with the least loss in mechanical properties.

RESUMO

Co-separation studies between surnames and Y chromosome genetic markers are beneficial to revealing population migrations, surname origins, population formation histories and forensic familial searching. Genetic distributions of 27 Y-STRs in Chinese four surnames (Li, Lin, Chen and Huang) from Zhanjiang Han population were investigated. Meanwhile, we tried to develop a decision tree model for surname predictions based on Y-STR haplotypes. Allelic frequencies of 27 Y-STRs showed that unique alleles were only observed in a certain surname; besides, some alleles displayed higher frequencies in a certain surname than those in other surnames, implying these alleles might be employed as the useful indicators for surname predictions. Haplotype match probability values of 27 Y-STRs in these surnames revealed that the system could be used as a valuable tool for forensic male identification. The developed decision tree model performed well for the training set with the accuracy of 0.9860 and obtained the relatively high accuracy (>0.70) for surname predictions of the testing set. To sum up, we explored the power of the machine learning to the surname predictions based on obtained Y-STR haplotypes, which showed promising application values in forensic familial searching.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Individual identification is one of the most important tasks in the field of forensic genetics. Insertion/Deletion (InDel) polymorphism marker has been a promising marker for individual identification. However, a part of InDel loci in commonly used commercial kit show low polymorphisms in Chinese populations. METHODS: We evaluated a panel of 35 InDel loci constructed previously for individual identifications in Hui group. Subsequently, population data of three Chinese populations from 1,000 Genomes Project database were used to evaluate individual identification performance of these 35 InDels. Forensic parameters, such as heterozygosity, power of exclusion, match probability and power of discrimination, were calculated to evaluate the forensic efficiency of these loci in Hui group. The heatmap of insertion allelic frequencies, Nei's genetic distances, pairwise fixation index values, principal component analyses and admixture analyses were used to analyze the genetic differentiations and structure between Hui group and other populations. RESULTS: In studied Hui group, besides rs3054057, polymorphism information content values of the remaining loci were greater than 0.3. Values of expected heterozygosity of these loci were close to 0.5. The combined power of discrimination and power of exclusion values were 0.99999999999999659609 and 0.998682, respectively. Analyses of population genetics revealed that Chinese Hui group had closer genetic relationships with East Asian populations than other intercontinental populations. CONCLUSION: The forensic statistical analyses revealed these loci showed relatively high genetic polymorphisms in Chinese Hui group, and could be served as a useful tool for individual identifications in Hui group. Population genetic evaluations indicated that Chinese Hui group had close genetic relationships with East Asian populations.

RESUMO

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been widely employed as one tool for the studies of human migration and phylogenetic evolution owing to the characteristics of its lack of recombination and matrilineal inheritance. In this study, we analyze genetic distributions of 60 mtDNA markers in 126 unrelated individuals of Southern Shaanxi Han population and classify their haplogroups. Genetic distribution comparisons between Southern Shaanxi Han and other populations from different continents are conducted based on the same mtDNA markers. The majority of 60 mtDNA markers are polymorphic in Southern Shaanxi Han population. The most common haplogroups observed in Southern Shaanxi Han population are B5, followed by D5, A, D4e, and N9a1'3. Obtained matching probability for these 60 mtDNA markers indicates that the panel could be used as a valuable tool in forensic caseworks. Results of genetic distances (Fst) and multidimensional scaling analysis show that Southern Shaanxi Han population has relatively close genetic relationships with other Han populations in different regions. In conclusion, the panel comprising 60 mtDNA markers could be utilized for forensic applications in Southern Shaanxi Han population.

RESUMO

Insertion and deletion markers (InDels) have gained considerable attentions in population genetics and forensic research. In this study, we investigated genetic distributions of 30 InDels in Gansu Yugur and Guizhou Miao groups and evaluated their forensic application values. Genetic relationship analyses between Gansu Yugur, Guizhou Miao groups and other published populations were conducted based on these 30 InDels. Power of discrimination and power of exclusion in trio and duo cases of 30 InDels ranged from 0.3528 to 0.6247, 0.0937 to 0.1873, and 0.0219 to 0.1247 in Gansu Yugur group; and they ranged from 0.2579 to 0.6247, 0.0671 to 0.1874, and 0.0105 to 0.1247 in Guizhou Miao group. Obtained cumulative power of discrimination values indicated these InDels could be used for forensic individual identifications in both ethnic groups. Principal component analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction revealed that Gansu Yugur and Guizhou Miao groups had close affinities with their neighboring populations. Genetic structure analyses among these populations also indicated that studied Gansu Yugur and Guizhou Miao groups showed similar genetic structure with their neighboring populations. Further analyses of Y-STR, mtDNA, and ancestry informative markers should be conducted to better understand genetic backgrounds of Gansu Yugur and Guizhou Miao groups in the future.

RESUMO

Prior to implementing a new kit into application, developmental validation should be conducted to demonstrate the robustness and applicability of the kit. In this study, 24 Y-STR loci from the AGCU Y SUPP STR kit were tested including 11 loci overlapping with other commercial kits (DYS385a/b, DYS635, DYS533, DYS481, DYS549, DYS460, DYS527a/b, DYS522, and DYS444) and 13 new loci (DYS531, DYS630, DYS622, DYS552, DYS510, DYS459a/b, DYS446, DYS443, DYS587, Y-GATA-A10, DYS520, and DYS557). Developmental validation including PCR-related studies, sensitivity, stability, and species specificity studies were conducted. The performance of the kit in genotyping case-type samples was also estimated. The results indicated that the kit is robust, accurate and sensitive and is able to detect male samples without being affected by female samples or other species. Population data were obtained with this kit in Chinese Xibe group as well. Totally 139 different haplotypes were obtained from 167 male samples and demonstrated that this typing system is relatively discriminative.

RESUMO

China is a multinational country composed of 56 ethnic groups of which the Han Chinese accounts for 91.60%. Qinghai Province is located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has an area of 72.12 km2, and is the fourth largest province in China. In the present study, we investigated the genetic polymorphisms of 20 short tandem repeat (STR) loci in a Qinghai Han population, as well as its genetic relationships with other populations. A total of 273 alleles were identified in 2 000 individuals at 20 loci, and the allelic frequency ranged from 0.000 2 to 0.532 7. The 20 STR loci showed a relatively high polymorphic rate in the studied group. Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged 0.613 0-0.907 5 and 0.614 8-0.920 0, respectively. The combined power of discrimination, and the probability of exclusion in duo and trio cases were 0.999 999 999 999 999 999 999 999 34, 0.999 996 0 and 0.999 999 996 5, respectively. Analyses of interpopulation differentiation revealed that the most significant differences were found between the Qinghai Han and Malaysian, while no significant differences were found between the Qinghai Han and Han people from Shaanxi and Jiangsu. The results of principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling analysis and phylogenetic reconstructions also suggested the close relationships between the Qinghai Han and other two Han populations. The present results, therefore, indicated that these 20 STR loci could be used for paternity testing and individual identification in forensic applications, and may also provide information for the studies of genetic relationships between Qinghai Han and other groups.

RESUMO

Short tandem repeats (STRs) with a high level of polymorphisms and convenient detection method play an indispensable role in human population and forensic genetics. Recently, we detected the 21 autosomal non-combined DNA index system (non-CODIS) STR loci in a Kyrgyz ethnic group, calculated their forensic parameters and analysed its genetic relationships with reference populations from China. In total, 168 alleles were observed at 21 non-CODIS STRs with corresponding allelic frequencies from 0.0016 to 0.4788. No significant deviations at these STRs were observed from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The values of cumulative power of discrimination and probability of exclusion for all the 21 non-CODIS STRs were 0.99999999999999999998835 and 0.9999994002, respectively. Furthermore, the analyses of phylogenetic trees, genetic distances and interpopulation differentiations demonstrated that the Kyrgyz group had relatively close genetic relationships with the Uygur and Kazak groups. These 21 non-CODIS STRs were characterized by high genetic diversities in the Kyrgyz group and could be applied as a robust tool for individual identification and kinship testing in forensic sciences.

RESUMO

We investigated the allelic frequencies and forensic descriptive parameters of 23 autosomal short tandem repeat loci in a randomly selected sample of 1218 unrelated healthy Uyghur individuals residing in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, northwest China. A total of 281 alleles at these loci were identified and their corresponding allelic frequencies ranged from 0.0004 to 0.5390. The combined match probability and combined probability of exclusion of all loci were 5.192 × 10-29 and 0.9999999996594, respectively. The results of population genetic study manifested that Uyghur had close relationships with those contiguous populations, such as Xibe and Hui groups. In a word, these autosomal short tandem repeat loci were highly informative in Uyghur group and the multiplex PCR system could be used as a valuable tool for forensic caseworks and population genetic analysis.

RESUMO

We analyzed the genetic polymorphisms of 15 autosomal and 10 Y-chromosomal STR loci in 214 individuals of Han population from Southern Shaanxi of China and studied the genetic relationships between Southern Shaanxi Han and other populations. We observed a total of 150 alleles at 15 autosomal STR loci with the corresponding allelic frequencies ranging from 0.0023 to 0.5210, and the combined power of discrimination and exclusion for the 15 autosomal STR loci were 0.99999999999999998866 and 0.999998491, respectively. For the 10 Y-STR loci, totally 100 different haplotypes were obtained, of which 94 were unique. The discriminatory capacity and haplotype diversity values of the 10 Y-STR loci were 0.9259 and 0.998269, respectively. The results demonstrated high genetic diversities of the 25 STR loci in the population for forensic applications. We constructed neighbor-joining tree and conducted principal component analysis based on 15 autosomal STR loci and conducted multidimensional scaling analysis and constructed neighbor-joining tree based on 10 Y-STR loci. The results of population genetic analyses based on both autosomal and Y-chromosome STRs indicated that the studied Southern Shaanxi Han population had relatively closer genetic relationship with Eastern Han population, and distant relationships with Croatian, Serbian and Moroccan populations.

RESUMO

Thirty insertion/deletion loci were utilized to study the genetic diversities of 125 bloodstain samples collected from Bai group in Yunnan Dali region, China. The observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity of the 30 loci ranged from 0.1520 to 0.5680, and 0.1927 to 0.4997, respectively. No deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium tests after Bonferroni correction were found at all 30 loci in Bai group. The cumulative probability of exclusion and combined discrimination power were 0.9859 and 0.9999999999887, respectively, which indicated the 30 loci could be used as complementary genetic markers for paternity testing and were qualified for personal identification in forensic cases. We found the studied Bai group had close relationships with Tibetan, Yi and Han groups from China by the population structure, principal component analysis, population differentiations, and phylogenetic reconstruction studies. Even so, for a better understanding of Bai ethnicity's genetic milieu, DNA genotyping at various genetic markers is necessary in future studies.
