Background: Aerobic capacity has shown to predict physical and mental health-related quality of life in bipolar disorder (BD). However, the correlation between exercise respiratory capacity and mitochondrial function remains understudied. We aimed to assess longitudinally intra-individual differences in these factors during mood episodes and remission in BD. Methods: This study included eight BD patients admitted to an acute psychiatric unit. Incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) was conducted during acute episodes (T0), followed by constant work rate cycle ergometry (CWRCE) to evaluate endurance time, oxygen uptake at peak exercise (VO2peak) and at the anaerobic threshold. The second test was repeated during remission (T1). Mitochondrial respiration rates were assessed at T0 and T1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Results: Endurance time, VO2peak, and anaerobic threshold oxygen consumption showed no significant variations between T0 and T1. Basal oxygen consumption at T1 tended to inversely correlate with maximal mitochondrial respiratory capacity (r=-0.690, p=0.058), and VO2peak during exercise at T1 inversely correlated with basal and minimum mitochondrial respiration (r=-0.810, p=0.015; r=-0.786, p=0.021, respectively). Conclusions: Our preliminary data showed that lower basal oxygen consumption may be linked to greater mitochondrial respiratory capacity, and maximum oxygen uptake during the exercise task was associated with lower basal mitochondrial respiration, suggesting that lower oxygen requirements could be associated with greater mitochondrial capacity. These findings should be replicated in larger samples stratified for manic and depressive states.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and recurrent disease characterized by acute mood episodes and periods of euthymia. The available literature postulates that a biphasic dysregulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics might underpin the neurobiology of BD. However, most studies focused on inter-subject differences rather than intra-subject variations between different mood states. To test this hypothesis, in this preliminary proof-of-concept study, we measured in vivo mitochondrial respiration in patients with BD during a mood episode and investigated differences compared to healthy controls (HC) and to the same patients upon clinical remission. METHODS: This longitudinal study recruited 20 patients with BD admitted to our acute psychiatric ward with a manic (n = 15) or depressive (n = 5) episode, and 10 matched HC. We assessed manic and depressive symptoms using standardized psychometric scales. Different mitochondrial oxygen consumption rates (OCRs: Routine, Leak, electron transport chain [ETC], Rox) were assessed during the acute episode (T0) and after clinical remission (T1) using high-resolution respirometry at 37°C by polarographic oxygen sensors in a two-chamber Oxygraph-2k system in one million of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMBC). Specific OCRs were expressed as mean ± SD in picomoles of oxygen per million cells. Significant results were adjusted for age, sex, and body mass index. RESULTS: The longitudinal analysis showed a significant increase in the maximal oxygen consumption capacity (ETC) in clinical remission (25.7 ± 16.7) compared to the acute episodes (19.1 ± 11.8, p = 0.025), and was observed separately for patients admitted with a manic episode (29.2 ± 18.9 in T1, 22.3 ± 11.9 in T0, p = 0.076), and at a trend-level for patients admitted with a depressive episode (15.4 ± 3.9 in T1 compared to 9.4 ± 3.2 in T0, p = 0.107). Compared to HC, significant differences were observed in ETC in patients with a bipolar mood episode (H = 11.7; p = 0.003). Individuals with bipolar depression showed lower ETC than those with a manic episode (t = -3.7, p = 0.001). Also, significant differences were observed in ETC rates between HC and bipolar depression (Z = 1.000, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Bioenergetic and mitochondrial dysregulation could be present in both manic and depressive phases in BD and, importantly, they may restore after clinical remission. These preliminary results suggest that mitochondrial respiratory capacity could be a biomarker of illness activity and clinical response in BD. Further studies with larger samples and similar approaches are needed to confirm these results and identify potential biomarkers in different phases of the disease.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are neurotrophins that play critical roles in brain neuronal function. Previous studies have established the association between BDNF and NGF signaling and severe mental disorders, but changes in BDNF plasma levels and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) response are controversial. The aim of his study was to explore the acute effects of a single session of ECT on these neurotrophins signaling. Plasma levels of BDNF and NGF and their tyrosine kinase-type receptors expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were determined before and two hours after a single ECT session in 30 subjects with a severe mental disorder. Two hours after an ECT session we found a statistically significant decrease of BDNF plasma levels (p=0.007). We did not find significant acute effects on NGF plasma levels or receptors expression in PBMCs. We found a significant inverse correlation between the time of convulsion and BDNF plasma levels decrease (r=-0.041, p=0.024). We have identified a decrease in BDNF plasma levels after 2h of a single ECT session. These results indicate the interest for future research in the role of neurotrophins in the response and safety of ECT.

BACKGROUND: Altered intestinal permeability and low-grade chronic inflammation disrupt the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (microbiota-gut-brain axis), probably playing a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. However, studies assessing the microbiota-gut-brain axis are inconsistent. This article describes the rationale, objectives, protocol, and presents descriptive results for a new project. METHODS: The sample of this study came from an observational, cross-sectional and multisite study including four centers in Spain (PI17/00246) recruiting adult patients with DSM-5 schizophrenia-spectrum disorders at any stage of the disease. The aims of the project are to assess the interrelation between intestinal permeability and low-grade chronic inflammation in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and the role of peripheral biomarkers, diet, exercise, metabolic syndrome, disease severity and functioning as well as cognition. Assessments included the following variables: (1) anthropometric, (2) intestinal permeability, diet, and physical exercise, (3) clinical and functional, (4) neuropsychological and cognitive reserve, and (5) peripheral biomarkers from blood. RESULTS: A total of 646 patients were enrolled (257, 39.7% female). Mean age was 43.2±13.6 years, illness duration 15.1±11.5 years. 55.8% consumed tobacco. Positive PANSS score was 13.68±6.55, and 20.38±8.69 in the negative symptoms. CGI was 4.16±2.22 and GAF was 60.00±14.84. CONCLUSION: The results obtained by this project are expected to contribute toward the understanding of the physiopathology of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. This will likely aid to personalize treatments in real-world clinical practice, potentially including variables related to intestinal permeability and inflammation.

OBJECTIVES: To study whether there is an association between caries and periodontitis in a representative sample from employed Spanish adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study is part of a wide epidemiological survey (WORALTH, Workers' ORAL healTH). Oral examination was carried out in 5130 dentate subjects. Periodontal status was assessed by clinical attachment level (CAL) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) in index teeth. For caries, all teeth were classified as healthy, decayed (D), filled (F), or missed (M), and DMFT index and prevalence of cavitated caries were calculated. ANOVA, Chi-square tests, and regression models were performed. RESULTS: DMFT increased with CAL values, being 7.8, 9.6, and 10.5 for CAL 0-3 mm, 4-5 mm, and ≥ 6 mm, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, subjects with CPI ≥ 3 showed an odds ratio of 1.6 (95% confidence interval (CI) [1.3; 1.8]; p < 0.001) for presenting cavitated caries, and patients with CAL ≥ 6 mm had 0.8 higher mean DMFT (95% CI [0.2; 1.5]; p = 0.015), and 0.3 higher mean DFR (95% CI [0.2; 0.5]; p < 0.001) than those with CAL < 6 mm. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of CAL ≥ 6 m mm was associated with an increased DMFT and DFR, and the presence of CPI ≥ 3 was associated with a higher prevalence of cavitated caries in this representative sample. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There is a tendency to present higher prevalence of dental caries among patients with periodontitis. Therefore, common preventive measures in dentistry, such as oral hygiene practices, should ideally include actions aimed to prevent at the same time dental caries and periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence of an association between periodontitis and MetS (metabolic syndrome) remains controversial. The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between periodontitis and MetS in a cross-sectional population survey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: WORALTH (Workers' ORAL healTH) Study is a cross-sectional survey, conducted on a representative sample of the Spanish employed population, including 5154 participants. An oral examination following the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria evaluated the periodontal status using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and Clinical Attachment Levels (CAL). Logistic regression analysis with adjustment for potential confounders was used to evaluate the association between periodontitis and MetS, and its individual components. RESULTS: Participants presenting a CPI = 4 were more likely to have MetS than subjects with CPI < 4 [odds ratio, OR = 1.41; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10-1.81; p < 0.001]. High blood pressure was the component with stronger association with periodontal status (OR = 1.94 for CAL ≥6 mm; 95% CI 1.49-2.53; p < 0.001). After stratifying for sex, the association was higher in women (OR = 2.20 for CPI = 4; 95% CI 1.31-3.62; p < 0.001). Non-metabolically healthy subjects, obese or not, presented a worse periodontal condition. CONCLUSION: Severe periodontitis (CPI = 4) was associated with MetS in a representative sample of the Spanish employed population. This association seems to be independent of body mass index and other potential confounders.

Objectives: The worldwide SARS-COV2 pandemic has impacted the health of workers and companies. The aim is to quantify it according to sick leave. Methods: Using ICD-9 codes, we analyzed Ibermutua records of all sick leaves during the first trimester of 2020, compared to during the same months of 2017, 2018, and 2019. We stratified the analysis by causes, patient sex, activity sectors, and regional data. All sick leaves were adjusted by the number of Ibermutua-affiliated persons in each period. Results: In March 2020, there was an unprecedented (116%) increase in total sick leaves, mainly due to infectious and respiratory diseases. Men and women were equally affected. All activity sectors were impacted, with the highest increase (457%) observed among health-related workers, especially due to contagious disease. The incidences of sick leaves were heterogeneous among different regions. Cost-analysis of sick leaves during the first trimester of 2020 compared with in previous years showed 40.3% increment (mean 2,813 vs. 2,005 € per 100 affiliated workers). Conclusions: The SARS-COV2 pandemic is having a huge impact on workers' health, as shown by data regarding sick leaves in March 2020. This is associated with greater economic burden for companies, both due to the cost associated with sick leaves and the losses in productivity due to confinement.

Integrated Pest Management programs do not always prioritize natural enemies when selecting control methods; too often these important pest reducing agents are negatively affected by the action of other methods in agroecosystems. The aim of this research was to evaluate side effects of a bioinsecticide, developed from the mixture of cedar (Cedrus atlantica), eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oils (EOs), in a ratio of 1:1:1, on Psyttalia concolor (Szèpligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) which is a parasitoid of some pests of the Tephritidae family, as Ceratitis capitata. The LD50 of the EOs mixture for C. capitata females was 3.09 µl/g, whereas the LD50 for P. concolor females was 20.45 µl/g which suggests the natural enemy is more tolerant to the EOs mixture. P. concolor parasitized L3 larvae of C. capitata through a voile treated with the mixture of EOs at 1.8% without causing any deleterious effects neither on the percentage of attacked hosts nor on the emergence rate, whereas at the highest concentration tested, 4.8%, decreased both parameters during the 2 first days after treatment. Semi-field assays showed that mixture of EOs was harmless to P. concolor when released 4 h after treatment whereas killed 55 ± 3.9% males and 37.5 ± 1.6% females of C. capitata. The mixture of EOs used jointly with lambda-cyhalothrin or kaolin, both compounds applied against C. capitata in conventional and organic farming, respectively, did not increase the toxicity and/or persistence against the pest.

AIM: There is a great interest in the role of the immune system and the inflammatory balance as key mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of severe mental disorders. Previous studies have indicated that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) produces changes in certain inflammatory mediators or in the immune system response. This study aimed to explore the effects of ECT on the nuclear transcription factor κB (NFκB) pathway, a main regulatory pathway of the inflammatory/immune response. METHODS: Thirty subjects with a severe mental disorder receiving treatment with ECT in our center were included. Thirteen systemic biomarkers related to the NFκB pathway were analyzed right before and 2 h after a single ECT session. RESULTS: An ECT session significantly decreased the expression of NFκB (P = 0.035) and of the inducible nitric oxide synthase (P = 0.012), and the plasma levels of nitrites (P = 0.027), prostaglandin E2 (P = 0.049), and 15-deoxy-PGJ2 (P < 0.001). Decrease in plasmatic levels of nitrites was greater in females than in males (P = 0.021). A positive correlation between the ECT stimulus load and changes in the expression of NFkB was found (P = 0.036). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels were decreased in treatment responders and increased in non-responders (P = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Our study shows the effects that a single session of ECT produces on a canonical regulatory pathway of the inflammatory/innate immune system and the inflammatory balance. These biomarkers could be useful as treatment response targets and could help to clarify the biological basis of ECT action. These findings warrant greater attention in future investigations and in the translational significance of these data.

(1) Background: The cognitive reserve (CR) concept has not been precisely defined in severe mental disorders and has been estimated using heterogeneous methods. This study aims to investigate and develop the psychometric properties of the Cognitive Reserve Assessment Scale in Health (CRASH), an instrument designed to measure CR in people with severe mental illness; (2) Methods: 100 patients with severe mental illness (non-affective psychoses and affective disorders) and 66 healthy controls were included. The internal consistency and convergent validity of CRASH were assessed. Spearman's correlations coefficients were also performed to examine the relationship between CRASH and neuropsychological tests, psychosocial functioning, and clinical course; (3) Results: The internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.903). The CRASH global score had a large positive correlation with the Cognitive reserve questionnaire total score (r = 0.838, p < 0.001), demonstrating good convergent validity. The correlation coefficients between the CRASH total scores and clinical, functional, and neuropsychological performance were different between groups. In order to provide clinical interpretation, severity classification based on diagnosis (non-affective psychotic disorders, affective disorders, and healthy controls) have been created; (4) Conclusions: CRASH is the first CR measure developed specifically for patients with severe mental illness, facilitating reliable and valid measurement of this construct. The scale may aid in the stratification of patients and the implementation of personalized interventions.

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of functional remediation (FR) in serum brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in euthymic adult patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD). A total of 128 participants were recruited at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. They were assessed at baseline and at the end of follow-up by the means of Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST), as well as a clinical structured interview to collect clinical and demographic variables of interest. Blood samples were also collected to assess BDNF levels. After baseline assessment, patients received FR, Psychoeducation or treatment as usual (TAU). One hundred and two out of 126 participants finished the study distributed as follows: FR group (n = 39); Psychoeducation group (n = 47) and TAU group (n = 16). Longitudinal repeated-measures analyses addressing the treatment effect on BDNF levels showed non-significant differences between the three groups (Pillai's trace = 0.06; F(2,97)= 0.28; p = 0.75), suggesting no interaction between treatment allocation and time on BDNF levels. The results of this study suggest that FR has no effect on peripheral BDNF levels in euthymic patients with BD, despite the improvement in psychosocial functioning.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between periodontitis, diabetes, and prediabetes, assessed by fasting plasma glucose (FPG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Workers' Oral Health Study is a cross-sectional survey conducted on a representative sample of the Spanish employed population including 5154 participants (59.5% men, aged 16-65). Examination of periodontal status assessed Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and clinical attachment levels (CAL). Biochemical determinations included fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Logistic regression analysis with adjustment for potential confounders was used to evaluate the association between periodontitis and abnormal glucose regulation. RESULTS: Ninety-five participants (2.2%) of the study population had diabetes, while 373 (8.8%) presented prediabetes. Prediabetes was not associated with CPI or CAL in fully adjusted multivariate logistic regressions models. Diabetes was significantly associated with subjects having a CPI 4 after adjustment for potential confounders (odds ratio OR = 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-3.1). This association was stronger in subjects < 45 years (OR = 4.0, 95% CI 1.2-12.7). CONCLUSION: Periodontitis was associated with diabetes mellitus, but not with prediabetes, in a representative sample of the Spanish employed population. The association was stronger for younger subjects, which emphasizes the need for early detection of diabetes in younger patients affected by periodontitis, particularly because periodontal therapy may help to improve glycemic control. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Periodontitis is associated with diabetes mellitus, having at the same time a negative effect on glycemic control. It is important to develop proper early diagnosis strategies for both conditions, particularly in young male adults.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex medical entity with a reduced life expectancy, mostly due to an increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases compared to the general population. An unbalanced immune response and a pro-inflammatory state might underlie this process. In treated patients, abnormal white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte and neutrophil count suggests atypical immune response related to clinical variables. We aimed to test the hypothesis that newly diagnosed naïve patients with non-affective psychosis would show abnormal blood cell count values after controlling for potential confounding factors compared to matched controls. METHODS: Seventy-five patients were compared with 80 controls matched for age, gender, body mass index and smoking. Analyses were conducted before and after controlling for smoking. RESULTS: Patients and controls displayed similar mean values (×103 /µL [SD]) for WBC count 7.02 [2.2] vs 6.50 [1.7] (P = .159), neutrophil count 4.25 [1.8] vs 3.84 [1.3] (P = .110) and monocyte count 0.43 [0.2] vs 0.40 [0.1] (P = .326). After controlling for smoking, 38 non-smoking patients showed a higher WBC and neutrophil count compared with 49 matched controls. Respective means of 7.01 [2.2] vs 5.97 [1.4] (P = .011) for WBC and 4.24 [1.9] vs 3.51 [1.2] (P = .028) for neutrophil count. Monocyte count showed an increased mean value 0.43 [0.2] vs 0.36 [0.1] with a trend towards signification (P = .063). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that abnormal immune response is present before the effects of medication and other confounders had taken place. Increased immune parameters might underlie the high ratio of medical co-morbidities described in schizophrenia.

AIMS: Our aim was to describe the electrocardiographic findings of a large sample of Spanish workers from several different employment sectors. METHODS AND RESULTS: Between May 2008 and November 2010, 13 495 consecutive 12-lead resting electrocardiograms (ECGs) were obtained during health examinations of working adults aged 16-74 years in 5 cities in different regions of Spain. Of those, 13 179 ECGs suitable for interpretation were included in this study. All tracings were classified by the same cardiologist, according to the Minnesota Code criteria. The mean age of the sample was 40 years, and 73.4% were male. Frequencies of complete right bundle branch block, complete left bundle branch block, and left ventricular hypertrophy were 1.1, 0.2, and 3.6%, respectively. Major Q wave abnormalities were observed in 1.7% of the subjects, T wave abnormalities in 0.7%, early repolarization in 2.4%, and other ST segment abnormalities in 0.2%. Atrial fibrillation was present in 0.08% of the workers and atrial flutter in 0.02%. Frequencies of the Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern, Brugada pattern, long QT pattern, and short QT pattern were 0.2, 0.068, 0.038, and 0.015%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study shows the electrocardiographic findings of a large sample of Spanish workers from several different employment sectors. The frequencies of many ECG patterns related to an adverse prognosis (left ventricular hypertrophy, complete left bundle branch block, T wave abnormalities, ST segment abnormalities, and atrial fibrillation) were low.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and severity of periodontal conditions among a representative sample of employed adults in Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A national cross-sectional study was conducted during 2008-2011. Periodontal status of 5130 workers, stratified by gender, age and occupation, was assessed based on Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL), following the WHO criteria. RESULTS: The percentage of subjects with periodontal pockets (CPI codes 3-4) was 38.4%, [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 36.4-40.5] increasing significantly in subjects ≥45 years; 13.7% (95% CI: 12.8-14.7) of workers showed CAL 4-5 mm, while 7.7% (95% CI: 7.0-8.5) showed CAL ≥6 mm, again increasing significantly in the population ≥45 years. Prevalence of worse periodontal conditions was significantly higher in male workers, in subjects with primary school education and lower income, and in smokers and former smokers. The periodontal condition in young adults (35-44 years) was worse in comparison with those previously reported in Spanish national surveys. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of destructive periodontal diseases was age-, gender-, education-, income- and tobacco smoking-related. Young adults showed worse periodontal conditions than has been previously reported in national surveys in Spain. It is suggested to include oral evaluation and preventive strategies in work-related medical check-ups.

Several hypotheses involving alterations of the immune system have been proposed among etiological explanations for psychotic disorders. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has a homeostatic role as an endogenous neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory system. Alterations of this system have been associated with psychosis. Cannabis use is a robust risk factor for these disorders that could alter the ECS signalling. In this study, 95 patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) and 90 healthy controls were recruited. Protein expression of cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), the protein levels of the main endocannabinoid synthesizing enzymes N-acyl phosphatidylethanolamine phospholipase (NAPE) and diacylglycerol lipase (DAGL), and of degradation enzymes fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) were determined by western blot analysis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Patients with a FEP showed a decreased expression of CB2 and of both endocannabinoids synthesizing enzymes (NAPE and DAGL) in comparison to healthy controls. After controlling for age, gender, body mass index, and cannabis use, NAPE and DAGL expression remained significantly decreased, whereas FAAH and MAGL expression were increased. On the other hand, FEP subjects with history of severe cannabis use showed a larger ECS dysregulation compared with healthy controls. These results indicate an ECS dysregulation in PBMC of FEP patients. The alteration of the ECS presented at the initial phases of psychosis could be contributing to the pathophysiology of the disease and constitutes a possible biomarker of psychotic disorders and an interesting pharmacological target to take into account for therapeutic purposes.

AIM: To study the prevalence, risk factors, and vascular disease associated with moderate and severe hypertriglyceridemia in an active working population. DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 594,701 workers from all Spanish geographical areas, occupation sectors, ages, and sexes who underwent a yearly routine checkup. Data collected from participants included age, sex, anthropometric measurements, vascular risk factors, lipidic profile and basic biochemical analysis, from a fasting blood sample. A cardiovascular risk assessment was performed. RESULTS: The study population included 428,334 males and 166,367 females, mean age 36+/-10 years. A total of 95,673 (16%) workers had mild hypertriglyceridemia (HTg) (Tg 150-399mg/dL), 7,081 (1.1%) had moderate HTg (400-999mg/dL), and 224 (0.03%) had severe HTg (>or=1000mg/dL). Of workers with hypertriglyceridemia, 90% were male. Age, obesity, type 1 and 2 diabetes, alcohol consumption, and vascular disease were associated with hypertriglyceridemia. Cardiovascular risk gradually increased for each HTg category. Amongst risk factors, the major independent predictor of mild-HTg was obesity (OR 2.42, CI 95% 2.37-2.48), whereas diabetes was a predictor of moderate HTg (OR 3.64, CI 95% 3.17-4.18) and severe HTg (OR 7.35, CI 95% 4.27-12.66). In multivariate analyses, HTg was gradually associated with vascular disease, even after adjusting for other risk factors. CONCLUSION: In this working population, preventive programs for HTg and associated vascular disease should consider obesity-diabetes control as its first objective.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the Spanish working population and determine how the prevalence varies according to occupation and sex. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 259,014 workers (mean age 36.4 years, range [16-74]; 72.9% male) who underwent a routine medical checkup. The Adult Treatment Panel III (2001) definition for metabolic syndrome was used. RESULTS: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 11.6% (95% CI 11.5-11.7) in male subjects and 4.1% (4.0-4.2) in female subjects and increased with age. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome varied in the different categories of occupational activity depending on the sex considered. Among female subjects, the age-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in blue-collar than in white-collar workers, but this difference was not evident among male workers. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome varies in the different categories of occupational activity in the Spanish working population. This variation also depends on sex.
