RESUMO

Microplastic pollution is a major global environmental threat that has attracted increasing interest from the scientific community over the past decade. The semi-closed and highly urbanized Mediterranean Sea has been investigated since 2012, in several specific studies that have identified it as a target hotspot for microplastic contamination. The marine coastal zone of the Salento peninsula (Apulia, Italy) has peculiar geographical and hydrodynamic features, although there are few published data detailing the level of microplastics present in this area. The present manuscript contains both data on the concentration of microplastics in surface waters and the level of microplastics ingested by selected marine organisms in the Salento coastal zone. Microplastics floating on the water surface were monitored during Autumn 2020 and Spring 2021 using neuston Manta net at three different distances from the coasts (Lizzano, Gallipoli and Otranto). The level of microplastic ingestion was monitored in fish species (Sardina pilchardus, Boops boops, Mullus barbatus) and in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Episodic peaks of microplastic concentrations were found on the sea surface during transects performed in the 3 nautic miles from the seashore. High values of ingested microplastics were found in S. pilchardus. and B. boops (5.4 and 4.6 items/individual respectively). A higher concentration of microplastics was detected in the Adriatic Sea than in the Ionian Sea by comparing the gastrointestinal tract of S. pilchardus and B. boops, in the monitored areas. These results are correlated with the concentration of floating microplastics, although this last result is not validated by statistical analysis. These results support the effectiveness of S. pilchardus and B. boops used as targets in monitoring activity for these pollutants. Results show a worrying increase in the concentration of microplastics on the sea surface and in the gastrointestinal tract of the target species compared to data reported in the literature.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the effects of ecology (plant community, topography and pedology), as well as of climate, on the composition of essential oils (EOs) from two officinal wild plant species (Lamiales) from Apulia, namely Satureja cuneifolia Ten. and Thymus spinulosus Ten. Few scientific data on their chemical composition are available, due to the fact that the first has a limited distribution range and the second is endemic of southern Italy. Results for both species, never officially used in traditional medicine and/or as spices, showed that the ecological context (from a phytosociological and ecological point of view) may influence their EO composition, and hence, yield chemotypes different from those reported in the literature. S. cuneifolia and Th. spinulosus can be considered good sources of phytochemicals as natural agents in organic agriculture due to the presence of thymol and α-pinene. Overall, the obtained trend for EOs suggests a potential use of both species as food, pharmacy, cosmetics and perfumery. Hence, their cultivation and use represent a positive step to reduce the use of synthetic chemicals and to meet the increasing demand for natural and healthier products.

RESUMO

The study focused on the effects of ecology (plant communities and topographical data) on composition of essential oils (EOs) of some officinal wild plant species (Lamiales): Clinopodium suaveolens, Salvia fruticosa subsp. thomasii, Satureja montana subsp. montana, and Thymbra capitata, in different environments of Apulia (Italy). C. suaveolens and S. fruticosa subsp. thomasii are rare species of conservation interest, while S. montana subsp. montana and T. capitata, have a wide distribution and are used in traditional medicine or as spices. Results showed that the ecological context (phytosociological and ecological features) may influence the composition of EOs of the studied species. High differences in the compound composition have been found in S. montana subsp. montana, whereas minor effects were observed in C. suaveolens, S. fruticosa subsp. thomasii, and T. capitata accessions. The understanding of such aspects is necessary for providing optimal conditions to produce EOs rich in compounds known for their biological activities. The results are of great interest also for EOs producers and at the same time to improve our knowledge and valorize wild officinal plants.

RESUMO

A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of biochar on the growth and uptake of Pb and Zn by tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum, L.) cultivated in two highly contaminated Kosovo soils, A and B. Plants were cultivated in the biochar amended and unamended soils. As expected, the biochar addition to the two polluted soils has contributed to significantly improve the crop yields, in terms of both fresh and dry weight. Further, results indicated that the effect of biochar on metal mobility is closely related, besides its properties, to soil's native characteristics. In fact, the addition of biochar to soil B had also beneficial effects on the uptake of both metals, halving in some cases the values of the biological accumulation and transfer coefficients, while it did not show the same efficacy on soil A.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to elucidate the heterogeneous structural and functional composition of humic acids (HAs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) isolated from two Alfisol profiles with different soil texture, in order to develop a better understanding of the organic matter dynamics. Soil samples were collected at different depths from three (Ap, 2AB and 2Bt) and eight (A1, A2, A3, E1, E2, 2Bt1, 2Bt2 and 2Bt3) soil horizons of two Alfisols located in the south (PR1) and north (PR2) of Italy, with a clay texture and a silt loam to loam ones, respectively. Chemical and spectroscopic methods were used to characterize the HAs and the DOM isolated from different soil horizons, including Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Fluorescence spectroscopies. The HAs and the DOM isolated from the two Alfisols apparently showed significant differences in their compositional, structural and functional characteristics. In particular, the HAs isolated from the PR1 featured a higher degree of humification and molecular complexity with respect to those isolated from the PR2. On the contrary, the DOM samples isolated from the PR2 showed a more marked aromatic character and polycondensation degree. Both the HAs and the DOM obtained from the PR1 presented a greater qualitative homogeneity with respect to those obtained from the PR2. These results could be reasonably ascribed to the different texture and horizons of the two Alfisols, and to a greater pedogenesis occurred in the PR1.
