RESUMO
Understanding how a fluid flows at the boundaries when it is confined at the microscale/nanoscale is crucial for a broad range of engineering and biology applications. We propose an experimental technique based on Bloch surface waves sustained by a one-dimensional photonic crystal to evaluate the speed of the contact line, i.e., the triple junction separating three phases, in the low Reynold's number regime, and with a nanometric resolution. Here, we report on the experimental characterization of the translatory motion of the contact line that separates two water solutions with a relatively high refractive index mismatch (7.35×10-3) and its slipping over a solid surface. The advantages are the relative simplicity and economy of the experimental configuration.
RESUMO
A combined label-free and fluorescence surface optical technique was used to quantify the mass deposited in binary biomolecular coatings. These coatings were constituted by fibronectin (FN), to stimulate endothelialization, and phosphorylcholine (PRC), for its hemocompatibility, which are two properties of relevance for cardiovascular applications. One-dimensional photonic crystals sustaining a Bloch surface wave were used to characterize different FN/PRC coatings deposited by a combination of adsorption and grafting processes. In particular, the label-free results permitted to quantitatively assess the mass deposited in FN adsorbed (185 ng/cm2) and grafted (160 ng/cm2). PRC binding to grafted FN coatings was also quantified, showing a coverage as low as 10 and 12 ng/cm2 for adsorbed and grafted PRC, respectively. Moreover, desorption of FN deposited by adsorption was detected and quantified upon the addition of PRC. The data obtained by the surface optical technique were complemented by water contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The results were in accordance with those obtained previously by qualitative and semiquantitative techniques (XPS, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) on several substrates (PTFE and stainless steel), confirming that grafted FN coatings show higher stability than those obtained by FN adsorption.

AIM: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an effective therapy for patients with reduced systolic function and enlarged QRS. Recently, some Authors have demonstrated that the presence of positive antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) may play a role in the development of heart failure in a population of patients implanted with PM. METHODS: We investigated the effect of positive ANAs in 90 patients (mean age 71±8 years) implanted with a CRT device in our Centre between May 2010 and June 2013. To assess for immunologic contribution to CRT outcome, patients were divided into positive and negative ANAs (ANA +, ANA -), considering as positive patients with an ANAs dilution > 1:80. The primary endpoint was constituted by a combined endpoint of death or first hospitalization for heart failure; secondary endpoints were constituted by: 1) incidence of first hospitalization for heart failure; and 2) total cause mortality. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 1200 days, primary endpoint occurred in 11 patients (30%) of ANA+ group and in 8 patients (15.1%) of ANA-group. The significant difference is due to difference in heart failure events (27% vs. 11.3%, P<0.05), whilst difference in total mortality did not reach statistical significance (10.8% vs. 3.8%). CONCLUSION: Immune status seems to play a role in patients with congestive heart failure. If this immunological alteration is a determinant or a consequence of heart failure remains unclear.

We experimentally demonstrate propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in the near-IR window lambda (1.45 microm,1.59 microm) at the interface of indium-tin-oxide films with different thicknesses deposited on glass. Dispersion of such polaritons is strongly dependent on the film thickness, putting into evidence a regime in which polaritons at both films's interfaces are coupled in surface supermodes. The experimental data are shown to be in good agreement with the analytical model for thin and absorbing conducting films. Measurements on aluminum-doped zinc oxide, characterized by a redshifted plasma resonance, do not show any surface plasmon polariton excitation in the same wavelength window.

The authors report a case of Kawasaki disease observed in a 3-years and 6-months-old girl, with pericardial effusion and premature cardiac beats. The pericardial effusion disappeared after gamma-globulin i.v. treatment (2 gr/kg); the premature cardiac beats, although progressively reducing, completely disappeared only after 6 months.

Prism coupling of radiation inside a linear film over a nonlinear substrate is studied with a numerical method, showing that the change of coupling as a function of the input power in the case of a quasi-continuous operation (thermal nonlinearity) is influenced by a thermal gradient generated in the linear film. A comparison with experimental data confirms these calculations.
RESUMO
The study of bile acids in the newborn permits to the AA. to point out that the beginning of the feeding does not influence the "physiologic cholestasis" of the first days of life. Neonatal cholestasis is the expression of the immaturity of bile acids synthesis and hepatic and intestinal carriage, which is not correlated with the maternal conditions. Furthermore, the AA. discuss about the analogy between cholestasis and "physiologic hyperbilirubinemia", from which it differs for the longer time. In fact, the maturation of the enterohepatic circle occurs very slowly under possible dietetic factors influences.

The thermal nonlinear response of a waveguide produced by sputtering a Corning 7059 glass film over a nonlinear substrate(Corning CS2-61) is studied with a pump-probe technique in a quasi-cw regime. The coupling efficiency is found to beafunction of pump power and chopping frequency. The coupling zone is scanned with a probe beam to examine the spatial dependence of the coupling efficiency.
RESUMO
In order to assess protection level against tetanus, the antitoxin titre was evaluated, by indirect haemagglutination test, in a sample, stratified by sex and age, of 805 subjects of three communes of Tuscany. On the whole the frequency of the serum protected is the 46.1% and it varies according to sex and age: under 20 years it is more than 90%, but it decreases in the successive ages, less in the male sex, probably owing to the vaccination made during the military service. The greatest percentage of immune subjects was observed in the most industrialized area. The less protected professional categories were pensioned people and housewives (25.8%). No differences of serum protection were found between those who practise or do not, recreative activities at the risk (sport, horticulture and gardening). No correlation was observed between the vaccinal anamnesis and the serological test.

The authors present two case-studies of achalasia in infancy and the emphasize the rarity of the illness in this stage of life. They point out that a correct diagnosis requires a meticulous anamnesis which should be followed by a radiological, endoscopic and manometric study. The authors discuss their therapeutical experience with Nifedipine and they suggest that it should be used while waiting for surgery.
