RESUMO

Fractions of phosphorus (P) and its sorption characteristics are affected by different soil fertility (FM) technologies which ultimately affect crop growth and productivity. However, the response of P fractions and sorption characteristics to soil fertility technologies that integrate diverse amendments is still poorly understood in acidic Nitisols. A randomized complete block design was layout in an acidic Nitisol to determine fractions of P, its sorption characteristics and use efficiencies in acidic Nitisols under various FM technologies in field conditions. The use of minimum tillage + maize residue + inorganic fertilizer + goat manure (MTCrGF) had the highest impact on and significantly increased resin-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi, and maximum P sorption (Smax) by 182, 76, and 52 mg P kg-1. Moreover, NaOH-Pi and Smax concentrations were higher under conventional tillage + maize residue + inorganic fertilizer + goat manure (CTCrGF) by 216 mg P kg-1 and 49 mg P kg-1 than the control. MTCrGF and CTCrGF also had the lowest P bonding energy (0.04 L mg-1). CTCrGF had the highest P partial productivity factor (0.093 and 0.140 kg biomass kg-1 P) and P agronomic efficiency (0.080 and 0.073 kg biomass kg-1 P) during the two cropping seasons. The results demonstrate the positive influence of combining multiple P sources on soil P fractions, sorption characteristics, and use efficiencies. Notably, combining either conventional or minimum tillage with maize straw and applying integrated manure and inorganic fertilizer (MTCrGF or CTCrGF) can increase the labile P concentrations and reduce the potential depletion of the non-renewable rock phosphate and the use of inorganic phosphatic fertilizers for agricultural production.

RESUMO

This paper reports on the design of a study to examine the policy landscape relevant to sugar-sweetened beverage taxation in seven sub-Saharan African countries. The study responds to the need for strong policy to address the rising burden of non-communicable diseases in the region. Sugar-sweetened beverage taxation has been widely recommended as a key component of a comprehensive policy approach to NCD prevention. However, it has proved a contentious policy intervention, with industry strongly opposing the introduction of such taxes. The aim was to identify opportunities to strengthen sugar-sweetened beverage taxation-related policy for the prevention of nutrition-related NCDs in a subset of Eastern and Southern African countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Rwanda, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda. The study was conducted as a collaboration by researchers from nine institutions; including the seven study countries, South Africa, and Australia. The research protocol was collaboratively developed, drawing on theories of the policy process to examine the existing availability of evidence, policy context, and stakeholder interests and influence. This paper describes the development of a method for a policy landscape analysis to strengthen policies relevant to NCD prevention, and specifically sugar-sweetened beverage taxation. This takes the form of a prospective policy analysis, based on systematic documentary analysis supplemented by consultations with policy actors, that is feasible in low-resource settings. Data were collected from policy documents, government and industry reports, survey documentation, webpages, and academic literature. Consultations were conducted to verify the completeness of the policy-relevant data collection. We analysed the frames and beliefs regarding the policy 'problems', the existing policy context and understandings of sugar-sweetened beverage taxation as a potential policy intervention, and the political context across relevant sectors, including industry interests and influence in the policy process. This study design will provide insights to inform public health action to support sugar-sweetened beverage taxation in the region.

RESUMO

The essential-oil composition of six native populations of Sideritis scardica from Bulgaria was studied by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses. Altogether, 37 components, representing 73.1 to 79.2% of the total oil content were identified. Among them, α-pinene (4.4-25.1%), ß-pinene (2.8-18.0%), oct-1-en-3-ol (2.3-8.0%), phenylacetaldehyde (0.5-9.5%), ß-bisabolene (1.3-11.0%), benzyl benzoate (1.1-14.3%), and m-camphorene (1; 0.3-12.4%) were the main compounds. All samples were characterized by low contents of oxygenated mono- and sesquiterpenes (≤1.6 and 2.3%, resp.). Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) showed a significant variability in the chemical composition of the studied samples as well as a correlation between the oil profiles and the ecological conditions of the natural habitats of S. scardica.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a series of 15 new cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma treated with presurgical embolization along with a review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Retrospective review of 15 cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma treated with presurgical embolization. The clinical, CT and MR features as well as postsurgical follow-up are reviewed. RESULTS: Presurgical embolization reduced surgical difficulties, especially hemorrhage, allowing complete tumor resection in most cases. Two cases of recurrent disease and 1 case of residual tumor were noted and treated by repeat embolization. CONCLUSION: Presurgical embolization reduces intraoperative hemorrhage and allows complete resection of these highly vascularized tumors.

RESUMO

Sesquiterpene lactones isolated from the genus Anthemis are used as chemotaxonomic markers. The obtained results support with some exceptions the botanical classification in Flora Europaea. Discrepancy between the lactone profile, cluster analysis and classification of A. melampodina, A. macedonica and A. austriaca in the genus Anthemis is discussed. The lactone composition of the undescribed as an European species A. plutonia correlates well with the guaianolide containing group of sect. Hiorthia.

RESUMO

The aerial parts of Anthemis austriaca Jacq. afforded five new sesquiterpene lactones (two of which are dimeric guaianolides) and three new guaiane type sesquiterpene acids In addition, seven known terpenoids were also found in the studied species. Their structures were elucidated by spectral methods.
