People sometimes mistakenly identify an unknown person they encounter as a known person. Previous studies have elucidated this phenomenon and revealed that it is a common experience. However, no experimental study has identified factors associated with its occurrence. We termed this relatively under-examined phenomenon as 'person misidentification' and examined its factors. Specifically, we focused on (1) establishing experimental procedures to detect person misidentification in a laboratory context, and (2) investigating the mechanism by which visual familiarity with the encountered unknown faces contributes to person misidentification. The results indicated that the developed procedure measured 247 misidentifications in 72 of 106 participants in all experiments. Although the effect of familiarity on person misidentification was not observed in Experiment 1, this effect was detected in Experiment 2, where the manipulation of familiarity was enhanced and confirmed. Concretely, unknown faces with familiarity enhanced by subliminal exposure were more frequently misidentified as another known person. This indicates that familiarity with an encountered face contributes to and induces person misidentification. In addition, the results demonstrated that similarities, especially in terms of hairstyle, between the encountered face and the misidentified known person might be related to its occurrence. These results have rich implications and expand the literature on face processing.

Previous neuroimaging studies have reported dual-task interference (DTi) and deterioration of task performance in a cognitive-motor dual task (DT) compared to that in a single task (ST). Greater frontoparietal activity is a neural signature of DTi; nonetheless, the underlying mechanism of cortical network in DTi still remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the regional brain activity and neural network changes during DTi induced by highly demanding cognitive-motor DT. Thirty-four right-handed healthy young adults performed the spiral-drawing task. They underwent a paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT) simultaneously or independently while their cortical activity was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Motor performance was determined using the balanced integration score (BIS), a balanced index of drawing speed and precision. The cognitive task of the PASAT was administered with two difficulty levels defined by 1 s (PASAT-1 s) and 2 s (PASAT-2 s) intervals, allowing for the serial addition of numbers. Cognitive performance was determined using the percentage of correct responses. These motor and cognitive performances were significantly reduced during DT, which combined a drawing and a cognitive task at either difficulty level, compared to those in the corresponding ST conditions. The DT conditions were also characterized by significantly increased activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) compared to that in the ST conditions. Multivariate Granger causality (GC) analysis of cortical activity in the selected frontoparietal regions of interest further revealed selective top-down causal connectivity from the right DLPFC to the right inferior parietal cortex during DTs. Furthermore, changes in the frontoparietal GC connectivity strength between the PASAT-2 s DT and ST conditions significantly correlated negatively with changes in the percentage of correct responses. Therefore, DTi can occur even in cognitively proficient young adults, and the right DLPFC and frontoparietal network being crucial neural mechanisms underlying DTi. These findings provide new insights into DTi and its underlying neural mechanisms and have implications for the clinical utility of cognitive-motor DTs applied to clinical populations with cognitive decline, such as those with psychiatric and brain disorders.

During human embryonic development, early cleavage-stage embryos are more susceptible to errors. Studies have shown that many problems occur during the first mitosis, such as direct cleavage, chromosome segregation errors, and multinucleation. However, the mechanisms whereby these errors occur during the first mitosis in human embryos remain unknown. To clarify this aspect, in the present study, we image discarded living human two-pronuclear stage zygotes using fluorescent labeling and confocal microscopy without microinjection of DNA or mRNA and investigate the association between spindle shape and nuclear abnormality during the first mitosis. We observe that the first mitotic spindles vary, and low-aspect-ratio-shaped spindles tend to lead to the formation of multiple nuclei at the 2-cell stage. Moreover, we observe defocusing poles in many of the first mitotic spindles, which are strongly associated with multinucleation. Additionally, we show that differences in the positions of the centrosomes cause spindle abnormality in the first mitosis. Furthermore, many multinuclei are modified to form mononuclei after the second mitosis because the occurrence of pole defocusing is firmly reduced. Our study will contribute markedly to research on the occurrence of mitotic errors during the early cleavage of human embryos.

Context: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors lower blood glucose levels by promoting urinary glucose excretion, but their overall effects on hormonal and metabolic status remain unclear. Objective: We here investigated the roles of insulin and glucagon in the regulation of glycemia in individuals treated with an SGLT2 inhibitor using mathematical model analysis. Methods: Hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp and oral glucose tolerance tests were performed in 68 individuals with type 2 diabetes treated with the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin. Data previously obtained from such tests in 120 subjects with various levels of glucose tolerance and not treated with an SGLT2 inhibitor were examined as a control. Mathematical models of the feedback loops connecting glucose and insulin (GI model) or glucose, insulin, and glucagon (GIG model) were generated. Results: Analysis with the GI model revealed that the disposition index/clearance, which is defined as the product of insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion divided by the square of insulin clearance and represents the glucose-handling ability of insulin, was significantly correlated with glycemia in subjects not taking an SGLT2 inhibitor but not in those taking dapagliflozin. Analysis with the GIG model revealed that a metric defined as the product of glucagon sensitivity and glucagon secretion divided by glucagon clearance (designated production index/clearance) was significantly correlated with blood glucose level in subjects treated with dapagliflozin. Conclusion: Treatment with an SGLT2 inhibitor alters the relation between insulin effect and blood glucose concentration, and glucagon effect may account for variation in glycemia among individuals treated with such drugs.

Objective The presence of a short white hair-like appearance in the lower esophagus has recently been noted during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) at our institution. Histological findings showed that this formation was a spiked protrusion of the esophageal papilla. The results regarding the prevalence of such lesions in individuals who underwent EGD examinations as part of medical checkup procedures are herein presented. Methods The EGD results of 14,338 individuals (9,225 males, 5,113 females; mean age 54.0±9.8 years) were examined. The findings related to the presence of multiple lesions with a short white hair-like appearance in the lower esophagus of patients with reflux esophagitis, esophageal squamous papilloma, or gastric mucosal atrophy (GMA), as well as the hiatal hernia width, were investigated. Results Endoscopic findings indicating short white hair-like appendages in the lower esophagus were noted in 167 patients, with a prevalence rate of 1.2%. A female sex, younger age, lower body mass index, lower percentages of habitual smoking and drinking, and the presence of esophageal squamous papilloma were characteristic features of cases with such findings. In addition, a significantly lower prevalence of reflux esophagitis and a smaller diaphragmatic hiatus size were observed. A multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that a female sex, absence of reflux esophagitis, presence of esophageal squamous papilloma, and a smaller diaphragmatic hiatus were factors significantly related to the presence of these short white hair-like appendages. An analysis of circumferential localization revealed the main location to be the left-posterior wall. Conclusion This study is the first to report the prevalence of multiple short white hair-like appendages in the lower esophagus. The occurrence of such lesions is inversely associated with the presence of reflux esophagitis.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of hydrodissection during computed tomography-guided renal cryoablation by evaluation of the fluid distribution based on the retroperitoneal anatomy with the interfascial plane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 2014 and March 2021, 52 renal tumors were treated by cryoablation with hydrodissection (36 men; mean age 72.5 years). The hydrodissection needle was located in perirenal space. The spreading fluid space based on the retroperitoneal anatomy with the interfascial plane was retrospectively evaluated. The fluid space that most effectively separated the tumor from the adjacent organs was defined. The relationship of the needle tip position in the perirenal space (renal capsule or fascia side) and the most effective fluid space was also evaluated. RESULTS: Cryoablation was successfully completed in all cases with no major complications. Hydrodissection was effective in all cases. The distance between the tumors and the adjacent organs was significantly longer after hydrodissection (from 7.50 ± 7.43 to 22.6 ± 9.86 mm) (P < 0.0001). Although fluid spreading through multiple retroperitoneal spaces was frequently observed, the retromesenteric plane was observed more frequently as the most effective fluid space (67.3%) than the perirenal space (21.2%) (P < 0.0001). Regardless of the needle tip position, the most effective fluid space was also commonly the retromesenteric plane. CONCLUSIONS: The retromesenteric plane could be the most effective fluid space to separate the tumor from the adjacent organ, regardless of where the hydrodissection needle tip is positioned in the perirenal space. Although the initial symptoms of corticobasal degeneration (CBD) are varied, psychiatric symptoms are uncommon. Here, we report the autopsy findings of a patient with early CBD who presented with hallucinations. A 68-year-old man developed memory loss and visions of bears and insects. Because of slow vertical eye movement, postural instability, and levodopa-unresponsive parkinsonism, the patient initially was clinically diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy. He died of a urinary tract infection 11 months after the onset of the disease. Histopathological examination revealed neuronal loss and gliosis, which were severe in the substantia nigra and moderate in the globus pallidus and subthalamic nucleus. Astrocytic plaques were scattered throughout the amygdala and premotor cortex. The superficial cortical layers lacked ballooned neurons and spongiosis, and tau deposition was greater in glia than in neurons. The amygdala contained a moderate number of argyrophilic grains and pretangles. Western blot analysis showed a 37-kDa band among the low-molecular-weight tau fragments. Because the CBD pathology was mild, we attributed the patient's visual hallucinations to the marked argyrophilic grain pathology. CBD can occur with psychiatric symptoms, including visual hallucinations, and argyrophilic grain pathology may be associated with psychiatric symptoms.

Performing a cognitive task prior to making a recognition judgment increases the probability of old responses, which is known as the revelation effect. The criterion shift account (Niewiadomski & Hockley, 2001) proposes that occupation of working memory causes the revelation effect. However, we proposed that working memory does not cause it. Two experiments were conducted to disconfirm the relationship between working memory and the revelation effect and to consider an alternative explanation that metacognition causes the effect. In Experiment 1, the revelation effect was caused by a finger movement task, which puts little or no load on working memory. In Experiment 2, a metacognitive instruction that a cognitive task would make subsequent recognition easier induced a conservative criterion shift. The finding that a simple motor task caused the revelation effect in Experiment 1 disconfirms the relationship between working memory and the revelation effect and extends the boundaries of the occurrence of the effect. The findings in Experiment 2 suggest that metacognition may be related to the occurrence of the revelation effect. This study implies a paradoxical aspect of human cognition in that metacognition, which usually makes cognition more effective and rational, may also cause an irrational phenomenon, the revelation effect. Purpose: Dynamic morphological changes in the chromosome and cytoskeleton occur in mammals and humans during early embryonic development, and abnormalities such as embryonic chromosomal aneuploidy occur when development does not proceed normally. Visualization of the intracellular organelles and cytoskeleton allows elucidation of the development of early mammalian embryos. The behavior of the DNA and cytoskeleton in early mammalian embryos has conventionally been observed by injecting target molecule mRNAs, incorporating a fluorescent substance-expressing gene, into embryos. In this study, we visualized the chronological behavior of male and female chromosome condensation in mouse embryos, beginning in the two-pronuclear zygote, through the first division to the two-cell stage, using fluorescent chemical probes to visualize the behavior of DNA, microtubules, and microfilaments. Method: Mouse two-pronuclear stage embryo were immersed in medium containing fluorescent chemical probes to visualize DNA, microtubules, and microfilaments. Observation was performed with a confocal microscope. Results: This method allowed us to observe how chromosome segregation errors in first somatic cell divisions in mouse embryos and enabled dynamic analysis of a phenomenon called lagging chromosomes. Conclusions: By applying this method, we can observe any stage of embryonic development, which may provide new insights into embryonic development in other mammals.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effects of acupuncture treatment through the ear acupoints on transport stress in experimental microminipigs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experiment 1: Six animals were equally divided into two groups (Control and Treatment). In the treatment group, before transportation (6 h; vehicle and plane), short, ultrathin circular transdermal needles were applied to locations corresponding to the acupoints on the apical area of both ears. Peripheral blood samples were collected from the cranial vena cava 2 days before and immediately after transportation. Blood stress markers, biochemistry indicators, and oxidative stress levels were examined. Experiment 2 (follow-up study: diarrhea incidence after transportation): Diarrhea incidence after transportation in the control and treatment groups was investigated. RESULTS: Experiment 1: Transport stress induced an increase in blood cortisol, serum amyloid A (SAA), glucose, non-esterified fatty acid, and derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and decreased the biological antioxidant potential (BAP)/d-ROMs ratio yet did not affect BAP. Acupuncture suppressed the increases in SAA and d-ROMs values and the decrease in BAP/d-ROMs ratio. Experiment 2: The total diarrhea incidence was 25% in the control group, whereas diarrhea was not observed in the treatment group. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture treatment suppresses hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function and, as a result, reduces transport stress without affecting the suppression of the central catecholaminergic system. Acupuncture treatment for transport stress can improve animal welfare.

BACKGROUND: Male pseudohermaphroditism is a developmental anomaly wherein animals are genetically and gonadally male, but their internal and/or external genitalia resemble those of females. In cattle, pseudohermaphroditism is often accompanied by multiple severe malformations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of male pseudohermaphroditism in a complex malformed calf born with an acardius amorphous cotwin. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a three-day-old, male anurous Japanese Black calf born with an acardius amorphous cotwin, complete absence of the tail, agenesis of the anus, separate scrota, and umbilical hernia. Transthoracic echocardiography and computed tomography revealed serious malformations in the skeletal system and the circulatory, digestive, urinary, and genital organs. Necropsy revealed rectal atresia, immature testes, epididymis, and penis, but no male accessory gonads. Histological analyses revealed vaginal- and uterine-like tissues adjacent to or fused to the rectum. Fluorescence in situ hybridization detected X and Y chromosomes, and some cells presented two X-probe signals in the same nucleus. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to the male genitalia, the female genitalia derived from the Müllerian ducts were difficult to detect by necropsy in the presented case. Many similar cases may be overlooked in clinical practice.

The purpose of this study is to show the characteristics of person misidentifications, that is, experiences in which persons are misidentified as known persons. A total of 121 participants were asked how many times they misidentified persons in the last year and details of a recent person misidentification were recorded through a traditional questionnaire. Additionally, they answered questions in a diary method questionnaire, about the details of person misidentification each time they experienced it, during the two-week survey period. The questionnaires revealed that the participants misidentified both known and unknown persons as familiar persons approximately six (traditional questionnaire) or 19 (diary method) times a year on average, regardless of whether they expected the persons to be there. They were more likely to misidentify a person as a familiar than as a less familiar person. It was also shown that the similarity of the faces of the person actually seen and the person they were mistaken for was not as high as the similarities of build and clothing. This study is expected to provide suggestions for models of person identification and enhance the research on errors.

Protruded signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is extremely rare. We herein report a rare case of flat elevated gastric SRCC in a patient without Helicobacter pylori infection. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy of a woman in her 50s revealed a flat, whitish lesion in the gastric body with elevation. Histological results of an endoscopically biopsied specimen led to a diagnosis of SRCC. Resection using endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed, and histology results revealed that the tumor was localized in the lamina propria. The size was 10×6 mm, and a protrusion had been formed by SRCC enlargement without destruction of the surface epithelium structure.

PURPOSE: The present study introduced the half-dose method (HDM), which halves the radiation dose for conventional head computed tomography (CT), for postoperative hydrocephalus and follow-up for craniosynostosis at a children's hospital. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of selective head CT scanning optimization towards the overall reduction of radiation exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 1227 and 1352 head CT examinations acquired before and after the introduction of the HDM, respectively, in children aged 0-15 years. The radiation exposure was evaluated using the CT dose index volume (CTDI-vol), dose-length product (DLP), rate of HDM introduction, and effect of reducing in-hospital radiation dose before and after the introduction of the HDM. For an objective evaluation of the image quality, head CT scans acquired with HDM and full-dose method (FDM) were randomly selected, and the image noise standard deviation (SD) was measured for each scan. In addition, some HDM images were randomly selected and independently reviewed by two radiologists. RESULTS: The HDM was introduced in 27.9% of all head CTs. The mean CTDI-vol of all head CTs was 21.5 ± 6.9 mGy after the introduction, a 14.9% reduction. The mean DLP was 418.4 ± 152.9 mGy.cm after the introduction, a 17.2% reduction. Compared to the FDM images, the noise SD of the HDM ones worsened by almost 0.9; however, none of the images were difficult or impossible to evaluate. CONCLUSION: The HDM yielded diagnostically acceptable images. In addition, a change in protocol for only two diseases successfully reduced the patients' overall radiation exposure by approximately 15%. Introducing and optimizing the HDM for frequently performed target diseases will be useful in reducing the exposure dose for the hospital's patient population.

Objective This study was performed to clarify the prevalence of raspberry-type gastric foveolar-type tumors, along with the time-course changes in the size and clinical course. Methods The subjects were 10,663 consecutive patients who underwent a medical checkup between April 2016 and March 2022, including an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) examination and determination of Helicobacter pylori infection status (uninfected, positive, post-eradication). The presence of characteristic reddish polypoid lesions in the stomach was investigated, and a diagnosis of raspberry-type gastric foveolar-type tumor was made based on histological findings. Results Thirty-eight cases had gastric polyps with a raspberry-like appearance on endoscopy, with 29 lesions in 28 cases endoscopically and histologically diagnosed as a raspberry-type gastric foveolar-type tumor. All of the affected subjects were determined to be H. pylori-uninfected. The prevalence of this type of lesion in all subjects was 0.26%, while that in the 6,635 H. pylori-uninfected subjects was 0.42%. An older age and the presence of a fundic gland polyp were found to be significant risk factors associated with the occurrence of the tumor. The mean size was 3.8±1.9 (range: 2-10) mm, and the location was in a fundic gland area in all affected subjects. Furthermore, examinations of previous EGD images revealed that two-thirds of the lesions had not changed in size, while follow-up EGD findings showed that lesions ≤5 mm in size had disappeared after a biopsy procedure. Conclusion The prevalence of raspberry-type gastric foveolar-type tumors was 0.42% in H. pylori-uninfected subjects. More than half of the lesions were too small to be removed by an endoscopic biopsy.

Although abnormalities in glucose metabolism normally resolve rapidly after delivery, women with GDM have a higher lifetime risk of developing diabetes mellitus than those without GDM; thus, postpartum healthcare is essential. Of all GDM patients, 5%-10% test positive for diabetes-related autoantibodies, which increase the risk of developing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Autoantibody measurement in GDM screening remains debatable; however, it may be useful for the postnatal follow-up of GDM patients at high risk of developing T1DM. We treated a 29-year-old woman who was GDM positive for anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA) requiring high-dose insulin therapy during pregnancy. As the patient tested positive for GADA, she received judicious postpartum management, allowing for early diagnosis of T1DM and resumption of treatment. Her insulin secretory capacity was preserved at 1 year after parturition, suggesting either slowly progressive insulin-dependent T1DM or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults. This was a rare case of slowly progressive insulin-dependent T1DM or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults in the early postpartum period, but the fact that GADA was positive during pregnancy enabled early treatment without overlooking it. Measuring diabetes-related autoantibodies in patients considered to be at a high risk for T1DM, such as those who are of slim build, young, or suffering from autoimmune thyroid disorders, may be important for appropriate individualized follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is involved in early-phase manual dexterity skill acquisition when cognitive control processes, such as integration and complexity demands, are required. However, the effectiveness of left DLPFC transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on early-phase motor learning and whether its effectiveness depends on the cognitive demand of the target task are unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether tDCS over the left DLPFC improves non-dominant hand dexterity performance and determine if its efficacy depends on the cognitive demand of the target task. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 70 healthy, right-handed, young adult participants were recruited. They were randomly allocated to the active tDCS (2 mA for 20 min) or sham groups and repeatedly performed the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) left-handed peg task and left-handed assembly task three times: pre-tDCS, during tDCS, and post tDCS. RESULTS: The final sample comprised 66 healthy young adults (mean age, 22.73 ± 1.57 years). There were significant interactions between group and time in both PPT tasks, indicating significantly higher performance of those in the active tDCS group than those in the sham group post tDCS (p < 0.001). Moreover, a greater benefit was observed in the left-handed assembly task performance than in the peg task performance (p < 0.001). No significant correlation between baseline performance and benefits from tDCS was observed in either task. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrated that prefrontal tDCS significantly improved early-phase manual dexterity skill acquisition, and its benefits were greater for the task with high cognitive demands. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of the left DLPFC in the modulation of early-phase dexterity skill acquisition. BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for severe obesity and its associated medical problems. Preoperative factors that predict postoperative weight loss remain to be fully characterized, however. METHODS: Anthropometric and laboratory data were collected retrospectively for severely obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) between April 2016 and July 2019 at our hospital. Preoperative factors that predicted weight loss at 1 year after LSG were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 122 subjects (45 men and 77 women) underwent LSG. The mean ± SD age and body mass index at surgery were 44.4 ± 10.4 years and 40.7 ± 6.7 kg/m2. The percent total weight loss (%TWL) was 27.0 ± 8.6 among all subjects, 26.4 ± 8.0 among men, and 27.4 ± 8.9 among women, with no significant difference between the sexes. The %TWL showed a significant inverse correlation with serum cortisol level in men and with age and the visceral/subcutaneous fat area ratio in women. Multivariable regression analysis revealed the presence of type 2 diabetes and the serum cortisol concentration to be negatively associated with %TWL among all subjects and men, respectively. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis identified an optimal cutoff of 10 µg/dL for prediction of a %TWL of ≥ 25 in men by serum cortisol level. CONCLUSIONS: Serum cortisol concentration was identified as a predictor for postoperative weight loss in men. Our results may thus help inform the decision to perform LSG or more effective surgical procedures in men with severe obesity.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to analyze incidence and risk factors for air embolism during computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy-guided lung biopsies using noncoaxial automatic needle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2014 and December 2019, 204 CT fluoroscopy-guided lung biopsies (127 men; mean age, 70.6 years) using noncoaxial automatic needle under inspiratory breath holding were performed. We retrospectively evaluated the incidence of air embolism as presence of air in the systemic circulation on whole-chest CT images obtained immediately after biopsy. Risk factors of the patient, tumor and procedural factors (size, location and type of nodule, distance from the pleura, the level of the lesion relative to the left atrium, emphysema, patient position, penetration of a pulmonary vein, etc) were analyzed. RESULTS: The technical success rate was 97.1%. Air embolism was radiologically identified in 8 cases (3.92%, 7 males; size, 21.6 ± 18.2 mm; distance to pleura, 11.9 ± 14.5 mm). Two patients showed overt symptoms and the others were asymptomatic. Independent risk factors were needle penetration of the pulmonary vein ( P = 0.0478) and higher location relative to left atrium ( P = 0.0353). Size, location and type of nodule, distance from the pleura, emphysema, patient position, and other variables were not significant risk factors. As other complications, pneumothorax and alveolar hemorrhage were observed in 57.4% and 77.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In CT fluoroscopy-guided lung biopsy using the noncoaxial automatic needles, radiological incidence of air embolism was 3.92%. Given the frequency of air embolism, it is necessary to incorporate this into postprocedure imaging and clinical evaluation.

A 58-year-old woman with HER2-negative hormone-sensitive postmenopausal breast cancer underwent preoperative bone scintigraphy and CT to search for distant metastasis. Bone metastasis was suspected in the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra. MRI revealed a mass that was hypointense on T1- and T2-weighted images and hyperintense on diffusion- weighted images, with intense contrast enhancement, indicating bone metastasis at cT1N0M1, Stage Ⅳ(M: OSS). The patient underwent partial mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. The postoperative diagnosis was pT2N0cM1, Stage Ⅳ, with the status of bone metastasis being key to staging. PET-CT showed uptake in the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra but no other metastatic findings. However, solitary bone metastasis to the cervical spinous process is atypical. CT-guided needle biopsy confirmed benign fibrous dysplasia, and the final diagnosis was breast cancer at pT2N0M0, Stage ⅡA. Fibrous dysplasia is characterized by impaired osteogenesis leading to fibroplasia and commonly occurs in the skull, jaw bones, ribs, and limbs. Solitary fibrous dysplasia in the cervical spinous process is rare. The lesion was asymptomatic and pathologically benign, requiring no treatment. The patient underwent postoperative radiation therapy for the conserved breast and is followed up with endocrine therapy.
