RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Self-regulated learning in higher education has increasingly attracted attention in recent years. This study involved a survey of nursing students using an originally developed tool called the Self-regulated Learning Strategy Scale for Undergraduate Nursing Students (SRLSS-NS). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to elucidate factors relating to the promotion of self-regulated learning while confirming the reliability and validity of the novel scale. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. SETTING: School of Health Science, Faculty of Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included first- to fourth-year undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: Descriptive statistics were used to ascertain participant characteristics. We confirmed the criterion-related validity of the survey through exploratory factor analysis and Pearson's product-moment coefficient with external criteria. Reliability was calculated using Cronbach's α coefficient. To examine stability, we confirmed the correlation between the first and second surveys. Multiple regression analysis was performed using the SRLSS-NS score as the objective variable and basic attributes/individual factors, learning-related factors, and cognitive factors as explanatory variables. The statistical significance level was defined as 5 %. RESULTS: The scale consisted of 12 items related to three factors-construct validity, internal consistency, and stability-which were confirmed. Regarding factors related to the SRLS of undergraduate nursing students, the SRLSS-NS score was greater for items such as, "I feel that university education gives me confidence in learning" (ß = 0.255, p < 0.001), "I like/find interest in things I am learning" (ß = 0.228, p < 0.001), "I feel that university education teaches me how to learn" (ß = 0.198, p = 0.003), and "Self-esteem as a professional" (ß = 0.143, p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: As more efforts are made to improve undergraduate nursing students' SRLS, the importance of education for increasing confidence, promoting intrinsic motivation, teaching learning methods, and fostering occupational identity is emphasized.

During the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the ability to be a self-regulated learner has become more important with the introduction of online classes. These changes mean that students are now required to review their learning strategies and self-manage their learning time. We have developed a new "ePortfolio system" with the aim of building a system that fosters self-regulated learners and can visualize students' learning outcomes. This paper introduces the concepts of our ePortfolio system as a Learning Management System ePortfolio building system that will provide enhanced functions and become a university-wide initiative.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: In Japan, some nursing and health science universities that train nurses and/or clinical laboratory technicians have a curriculum in which students observe medical students performing a cadaver dissection. Observing a cadaver dissection is believed to affect the formation of a student's professional identity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of observing a cadaver dissection on the professional identity of nursing and clinical laboratory science students to find an effective educational support system for developing professional identity. METHODS: Sophomores majoring in nursing science or clinical laboratory science were asked to complete a questionnaire with a professional identity scale before and after hands-on experience of a cadaver dissection performed by medical students. After their hands-on session was complete, they responded to a free-answer question about acquiring a professional identity. RESULTS: The professional identity score of nursing students significantly decreased after the hands-on experience of the cadaver dissection. No significant change in professional identity score was observed in the clinical laboratory science students. However, the effect size (r) was moderate. CONCLUSION: Although professional identity formation fluctuates immediately after the experience of the hands-on experience of a cadaver dissection, the findings do suggest that these hands-on sessions will be effective for developing their professional identity if educational support is provided to help them utilize what they learned through reflection.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Self-care agency is an important determinant of self-care behavior. The purpose of this study was to identify the causal relationship between self-care agency and healthy behavior, and to construct a conceptual model of healthy behavior among older people living in a rural community. METHODS: This study was conducted as a cross-sectional survey at the Hino, a town in western Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Participants who were enrolled in the Good Ageing and Intervention against Nursing Care and Activity Decline (GAINA) study from 2014 to 2018 (467 new participants) were initially investigated. Of 398 participants aged ≥ 65 years, 5 were excluded due to missing data, and thus 393 were analyzed. Nurse researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with participants to check the accuracy of data obtained from a self-administered questionnaire, which included demographic information, physical condition (comorbidities, knee pain, low back pain, and locomotive syndrome), healthy behavior, and self-care agency. Correlations among variables were investigated by Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, and path analysis was performed to assess causal relationships. RESULTS: A total of 393 persons (160 men and 233 women) were investigated, ranging in age from 65 to 92 years, with a mean age of 75.1 years (SD: 6.9 years). Path analysis revealed poor fit of a model in which pain and locomotive syndrome were factors inhibiting healthy behavior. When the model included only self-care agency, the indices of model fit were almost satisfactory (Goodness-of-fit index = 0.967, Adjusted goodness-of-fit index = 0.900, Comparative fit index = 0.951, and Root mean square error of approximation = 0.088), and the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.38. The self-care agency items with the greatest influence on healthy behavior were the ability to "grasp the techniques/tips needed to maintain health," and the ability to "persist with healthy behavior." CONCLUSION: Self-care agency can promote healthy behavior among community-dwelling older people. Regardless of physical problems such as pain and locomotive syndrome, older people have the potential to adopt positive healthy behavior if they acquire self-care agency.
RESUMO
The aim of this report is to evaluate the effects of voice rehabilitation with a voice prosthesis in a young patient with thyroid cancer. A 17-year-old girl underwent voice restoration with a voice prosthesis after laryngectomy to treat thyroid cancer. She completed voice-related questionnaires (the Voice Handicap Index-10 and Voice-Related Quality Of Life Survey) at ages 17 and 21 and underwent phonetic functional evaluation. The sound spectrograms of her phonation using the voice prosthesis showed low frequency sounds without an obvious basic frequency. She was ashamed of her hoarse voice and did not use her voice prosthesis during high school. However, after beginning to work at age 20, she used her voice to communicate in the workplace. At age 21, her questionnaire scores, especially those related to the physical and functional domains, improved compared with those at age 17. Voice restoration with a voice prosthesis is recommended for young patients who undergo laryngectomy for advanced thyroid cancer. The advantages of voice restoration with a voice prosthesis may increase when the patient reaches working age, and it may improve post-laryngectomy quality of life considerably.

BACKGROUND: The use of tracheoesophageal speech with voice prosthesis (T-E speech) after total laryngectomy has increased recently as a method of vocalization following laryngeal cancer. Previous research has not investigated the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and phonatory function in those using T-E speech. This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship between phonatory function and both comprehensive health-related QOL and QOL related to speech in people using T-E speech. METHODS: The subjects of the study were 20 male patients using T-E speech after total laryngectomy. At a visit to our clinic, the subjects underwent a phonatory function test and completed three questionnaires: the MOS 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-8), the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10), and the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) Measure. RESULTS: A significant correlation was observed between the physical component summary (PCS), a summary score of SF-8, and VHI-10. Additionally, a significant correlation was observed between the SF-8 mental component summary (MCS) and both VHI-10 and VRQOL. Significant correlations were also observed between voice intensity in the phonatory function test and both VHI-10 and V-RQOL. Finally, voice intensity was significantly correlated with the SF-8 PCS. CONCLUSIONS: QOL questionnaires and phonatory function tests showed that, in people using T-E speech after total laryngectomy, voice intensity was correlated with comprehensive QOL, including physical and mental health. This finding suggests that voice intensity can be used as a performance index for speech rehabilitation.

In neonatal suckling rats, the absorptive cells of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum endocytose maternal milk macromolecules, including antibodies from the lumen. To determine whether the absorptive cells from the middle segment of small intestine have an apical endocytic membrane system that is the same as that of the duodenum, jejunum or ileum, we applied horseradish peroxidase by intraluminal injection, and examined the absorptive cells using light and transmission electron microscopy. In the middle segment of the small intestine, the absorptive cells had an apical endocytic membrane system including apical coated pits, apical invaginations, coated vesicles, vesicles, tubules, early endosomes, late endosomes and a large homogeneous electron-dense lysosome at the supranuclear region. This would suggest that the endocytic membrane system in the absorptive cells from the middle segment of the small intestine is specialized for quick and active intracellular digestion. The apical endocytic membrane system of the absorptive cells varied according to the segment of the small intestine, and the absorptive cells made their transition gradually from jejunal type to middle type, and then from middle type to ileal type at the suckling stage. The jejunal and ileal type of absorptive cells increased with growth, in contrast to the middle type.

The localization of caveolins in the sinus endothelial cells of the rat spleen has been demonstrated by confocal laser scanning and electron microscopy. Caveolin-3, a muscle-specific caveolin, was detected by Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy of isolated sinus endothelial cells and tissue cryosections of the spleen. During the immunofluorescence microscopy of isolated endothelial cells, both caveolin-3 and caveolin-1 were found. In tissue cryosections of the spleen, caveolin-3, as well as caveolin-1 and -2, was present in the contours and cytoplasm of the cells. Immunogold electron microscopy of tissue cryosections revealed caveolin-3, -1, and -2 to be present in caveolae in the apical, lateral, and basal plasma membranes and some vesicular profiles in the cytoplasm of sinus endothelial cells. Furthermore, caveolin-3 was colocalized with caveolin-1 in the same caveolae in the apical, lateral, and basal plasma membranes. Stress fibers and tubulovesicular structures were situated in the vicinity of caveolae labeled with anti-caveolin-3, anti-caveolin-1, and anti-caveolin-2 antibodies. It is speculated that caveolae in sinus endothelial cells play an important role in the constriction of stress fibers.

The three-dimensional arrangement of the intestinal smooth muscle in the ammocoetes of the lamprey (Lampetra japonica) was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after removal of the intestinal mucosa. In cross section of the posterior midgut, its wall was composed of the parietal wall and the typhlosolar wall of the spiral fold, lining a horseshoe-shaped space, and had two distinct muscle layers. The fiber extensions of the muscle layers in the two parts of the wall were reversed; internal longitudinal and external circular in the parietal wall, but internal circular and external longitudinal in the typhlosolar wall. The positional exchange of the two layers occurred within the transitional area from the parietal wall to the typhlosolar wall, where an interlacing texture of longitudinal and circular braids of fibers was observed. Furthermore, the external fibers of the longitudinal braid extended successively into the circular braid until the longitudinal braid disappeared. However, any fibrous transition from the circular braid into the longitudinal braid in the typhlosolar wall was not clear in the present study. The internal location of the longitudinal layer at the parietal wall may be optimal for its main function of contracting the intestinal tract longitudinally. In addition, the external (to be precise, the internal to the hematopoietic tissue) longitudinal muscle layer in the typhlosolar wall may play an important role in saving and squeezing out blood into the cardinal intestinal vein by longitudinal contraction of the elongated adjacent hematopoietic tissue mass.
RESUMO
Cellular differentiation of the absorptive cells in the neonatal-suckling rat colon was investigated using horseradish peroxidase as a macromolecular tracer with a scanning or transmission electron microscope. Numerous villi were lined on oblique folds in an orderly fashion and smaller villi were lined between the folds in the proximal colon in 0- to 12-day-old rats. Three different types of absorptive cells were observed in the epithelium covering their villi: type I cells, type II cells, and type III cells. The type I cells were most numerous, and similar to typical absorptive cells of the adult rat large intestine. The type II cells endocytosed macromolecules into an apical endocytic membrane system without giant lysosome from the large intestinal lumen. The type III cells were characteristic of the well-developed endocytic membrane system, including a large supranuclear giant lysosome specialized for endocytosis, storage, and intracellular digestion as an ileal absorptive cell of the suckling rat. At no time was macromolecular tracer detected in the Golgi apparatus of the absorptive cells or in the intercellular space of the epithelium. These results suggest that the villial absorptive cells of the proximal colon have differentiated to three types at specific neonatal-suckling times. The type II and type III cells were not observed in the epithelium after the disappearance of the villi.
