OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a single intra-articular injection of high-molecular-weight (HMW) hyaluronic acid (HA) at a dose of 4 mL/60 mg to reduce pain in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA) over 12 months. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective study was conducted after obtaining ethical approval from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Bangladesh. From July 2020 to June 2021, a medical professional conducted the investigation. The investigation encompassed patients aged 40 to 70 hospitalized at our facility and diagnosed with Grade 2 or Grade 3 knee OA according to the Kellgren-Lawrence grading method. We divided the patients into two categories based on the treatments they received. Patients in Group A received a single injection of HMW HA (60 mg/4 mL) into the joint, along with instructions on activities of daily living, exercise, and painkillers. Group B patients received conservative therapy, which involved the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, therapeutic exercises, and a knee brace during physical activity. RESULTS: This study compared the efficacy of a single injection of HMW HA in the joint versus NSAIDs for managing OA-related symptoms over 12 weeks. The HA group initially scored similarly to the comparison group. By week three, however, the group receiving HA had considerably higher Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores (p=0.019). This pattern continued through weeks 6 (p=0.044), 9 (p=0.016), and 12 (p<0.001). Similarly, by week 3 (p=0.029), the visual analog scale (VAS) scores, which were initially identical (p=0.120), demonstrated a significant preference for HA, and this preference persisted through weeks 6, 9, and 12 (all p<0.001). The results show that by the third week, HA is more effective than NSAIDs at relieving pain and improving symptoms. CONCLUSION: The study's results indicated that over 12 weeks, the use of HMW HA led to statistically significant reductions in pain intensity, as measured by the VAS. Furthermore, HMW HA demonstrated a more significant improvement in WOMAC ratings, which assess physical function, stiffness, and pain, compared to NSAIDs. The findings suggest that administering HMW HA injections can significantly reduce symptoms and improve functionality in individuals with knee OA.

Tilapia aquaculture is rapidly expanding worldwide, particularly in Bangladesh. However, metal pollution in aquaculture presents significant environmental and human health risks. This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of 13 potentially toxic metals (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, Mn, Se, and Zn) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), surface water, and sediment from freshwater and brackish water aquaculture ponds. The study also assessed the associated environmental and human health risks. Samples of tilapia, water, and sediment were collected between October and November 2021 and analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The estimated daily intake (EDI) of As, Cr, Pb, Se, and Zn in tilapia muscle of both freshwater and brackish water, as well as Cd and Ni in brackish water, exceeded recommended EDI values. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) was less than 1 for most metals, except for As in brackish water tilapia and Cr in both freshwater and brackish water tilapia, indicating potential health risks. The Target Cancer Risk (TR) values for As in both freshwater and brackish water tilapia, and for Cr and Ni in freshwater tilapia, exceeded acceptable ranges. While the concentrations of metals in surface water of both freshwater and brackish water tilapia farms varied, all mean concentrations were below WHO recommended limits. The contamination factor (Cf) values were less than 1 for all metals in both types of aquaculture ponds, except for Zn in freshwater sediment and Se in brackish water sediment. Additionally, the calculated risk indices including the Pollution Load Index (PLI), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Ecological Risk Factor (Er), and Potential Ecological Risk Factor (PER) for sediment were below the risk thresholds values (PLI < 1, Igeo < 0, Er < 40, and PER < 150). The significant positive correlations were found between tilapia muscle and the sediment of the respective ponds for arsenic (As) (ρ= 0.8, p<0.002) and Cr (ρ= 0.7, p<0.02). Although the levels of studied metals in water and sediment from freshwater and brackish water aquaculture ponds were generally within recommended guidelines, this study underscores the need for continuous monitoring and preventative measures, particularly to address elevated levels of As and Cr in tilapia muscle, which may pose potential risks to human health.

The present study aimed to elucidate the effect of different levels of dietary protein during late pregnancy on the performance of Black Bengal does and their kids. Twelve does were divided into three groups, with four in each, and three diets, i.e., high protein (18% CP), medium protein (14% CP), and low protein (10% CP) were supplied for 50 days, commencing from 100 days post-coitum to parturition. During the first 100 days of pregnancy, uniform rations with similar ingredients were provided to fulfill the nutrient requirements depending on the live weight of does. All three diets were isocaloric (10.0 MJ/kg DM). Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA, and the significance of the difference among means was determined by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The main effects of diet and sex, as well as their interaction, were analyzed by two-way ANOVA by using the GLM procedure. The relative expression values of qPCR were calculated by using the 2-ΔΔCt analysis method. Live weight gain was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in high-protein-fed dams than other groups during the experimental period. The milk yield of does was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in high-protein-fed goats than in the low-protein group. The lactation length of does was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the high- and medium-protein-fed does than in the low-protein-fed does. The duration of post-partum anestrus of does was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the low-protein-fed dams than in the high-protein group. The birth weight of kids tended to be higher in the high-protein group but did not differ significantly among the treatment groups. In male kids, weaning weight, final weight, live weight gain, and average daily gain were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than in female kids. Weaning weight was higher (p < 0.05) in kids of the high-protein-fed does than the low-protein group. Final weight and live weight gain were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in kids of the high-protein-fed does than in the low-protein-fed group. On the other hand, average daily gain was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in kids of the high- and medium-protein-fed does than the low-protein group. The average body length and wither height of kids at the 32nd week was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in kids of high-protein-fed does than those of the low-protein-fed group. The average heart girth of kids at the 32nd week was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in kids of high-protein-fed does than the medium- and low-protein groups. The survival rate of kids was higher in the medium- and high-protein-fed does than in low-protein group. Hot carcass weight and ether extract content of meat were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the high-protein group than in the other groups. The dressing percentage was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the kids of high-protein-fed does than low-protein-fed goats. The expression of the H-FABP gene was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in kids of high-protein-fed does than those of the medium- and low-protein groups. In conclusion, maternal dietary protein levels positively influences the production performance of Black Bengal does and their kids.

Dengue fever is a febrile viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The symptoms of dengue fever are numerous and varied; however, cardiac tamponade is a particularly rare and atypical complication. This study describes a case of a 30-year-old male who presented with acute respiratory distress and chest pain on the ninth day after diagnosis of dengue fever. On admission, a computed tomography scan revealed a large pericardial effusion. The patient went into shock and was urgently treated with pericardial drainage, which resulted in rapid improvement of his symptoms. Emergent management of this rare but potentially fatal complication of dengue fever resulted in a favorable outcome in this case.

Urban air quality stands as a pressing concern in cities globally, with airborne particulate matter (PM) emerging as a significant threat to human health. An investigation was carried out to examine the potential of four prevalent evergreen roadside tree species grown at different locations in Dhaka to capture PM using their leaves. The distribution of PM by mass and quantity in Dhaka are presented for the first time for Bangladesh and these results will also be applicable to countries with similar climates and tree species. Separate gravimetric analyses were carried out to quantify PM in three different size ranges (0.2-2.5 µm, 2.5-10 µm, and 10-100 µm) accumulated on surfaces and trapped within waxes by using the rinse and weigh method. The method is validated for the first time through SEM-EDX analysis, which confirmed that the increase in weight from chloroform-rinsed leaves was exclusively attributable to particle deposition on the filter. The chemical composition of the deposited PM2.5 was analyzed quantitatively by determining the concentration of twenty-five trace elements employing ICP-MS. SEM-EDX analysis revealed the significance of leaf microstructural traits in effectively capturing PM. Significant variations in the deposition of PM were found among different species for two PM categories (surface PM and wax-embedded PM) and three size fractions (large, coarse, and fine) (one-way ANOVA; p<0.05). The quantity of wax retained on the foliage of trees documented in these locations also varied (p<0.05). Among the species studied, Ficus benghalensis demonstrated a greater ability to retain PM. Mangifera indica was identified to be the most efficient collector of wax-related PM and appears to be the ideal species for traffic-heavy areas distinguished by high concentrations of organic compounds from vehicle emissions.

Latency is a common strategy in a wide range of viral lineages, but its prevalence in giant viruses remains unknown. Here we describe the activity and viral production from a 617 kbp integrated giant viral element in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. We resolve the integrated viral region using long-read sequencing and show that viral particles are produced and released in otherwise healthy cultures. A diverse array of viral-encoded selfish genetic elements are expressed during GEVE reactivation and produce proteins that are packaged in virions. In addition, we show that field isolates of Chlamydomonas sp. harbor latent giant viruses related to the C. reinhardtii GEVE that exhibit similar infection dynamics, demonstrating that giant virus latency is prevalent in natural host communities. Our work reports the largest temperate virus documented to date and the first active GEVE identified in a unicellular eukaryote, substantially expanding the known limits of viral latency.

This study aimed to assess the concentrations of eight trace metals - Cr, As, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, Hg, and Co - in the intertidal zone of Cox's Bazar of Bangladesh, the world's longest continuous beach. Most metal concentrations were below sediment quality guidelines and other comparative studies. The mean metal concentrations (mg kg-1) were as follows: Mn (471.67) > Zn (256.35) > Cr (89.96) > Pb (39.66) > Ni (36.44) > As (18.79) > Co (11.08) > Hg (0.0036). Statistical analyses revealed that only samples collected from stations 5 and 7 presented any cause for concern. Risk assessment indices, i.e., Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), and Toxic Risk Index (TRI), all indicated a low to moderate risk of pollution for all sites, suggesting that the study area is currently free from any significant negative impacts resulting from human activities. The calculated Hazard Index (HI) was <1, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic impact on adults or children. The Total Carcinogenic Risk was also well below the threshold value.

The prevalence of brown carbon (BrC) in the atmosphere has experienced a notable upsurge owing to human activities of anthropogenic origin. This study aims to examine the optical characteristics of BrC in both deionized (DI) water and organic solvents (OS), alongside the identification of BrC chromophores within the ambient atmosphere of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Particulate matter (PM) samples were collected on quartz filters using a low-volume sampler from December 2021 to May 2022 at Mukarram Hussain Khundker Bhaban, University of Dhaka. The concentration of BrC was measured using soot analyzer, optical properties of BrC were determined using UV-Vis spectrometer, and BrC chromophores were identified with GC-MS. Average concentration of BrC was 19.13 ± 5.71 µgm-3. The average of absorption coefficient (babs_365), mass absorption efficiency (MAE), absorption angstrom exponent (AAE), and refractive index (kabs_365) of BrC_DI have been observed to be 38.75 ± 21.90 Mm-1, 2.16 ± 1.42 m2 g-1, 1.51 ± 0.08, 0.06 ± 0.04, respectively. The absorption coefficient and MAE of BrC_OS are 1.3 and 1.36 times, respectively higher than that of BrC_DI. Thirty chromophores of BrC have been identified, predominantly consisting of oxygenated compounds. Derivatives of Bisphenol A (C27H44O2Si2) were detected in all samples of oxygenated compounds, primarily originating from the combustion of plastic and the incineration of e-waste. Additionally, compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur, such as C14H26N2O, C31H55N, and C31H49NO3S, were identified, largely attributed to biomass combustion and traffic emissions. These chromophores play a significant role in the absorption of solar radiation, thus influencing atmospheric photochemistry.

The relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and physical activity (PA) remains unclear with both positive and negative associations between segregation and PA recently reported. We aimed to examine the relationship between county-level residential segregation and total daily PA and domain-specific PA and whether these associations varied by gender. Participants (N = 2625, mean age [SD] = 45.2 [15.4]) were recruited from the AmeriSpeak panel who completed up to two Activities Completed over Time in 24 Hours (ACT24) previous day recalls in 2019. PA outcomes were created for the following: (1) light PA (LPA), (2) moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), (3) total active time, and (4) domain-specific PA, including leisure, work, household, transport, personal, and other activities. County-level residential segregation based on isolation. Weighted generalized linear models were used to examine the relationship between county-level segregation and each PA outcome, controlling for age, gender, race/ethnicity, income, employment, body mass index, county-level poverty, and census region. Overall, results showed no association between county-level residential segregation and LPA, MVPA, total active time, and domain-specific PA among NH Black and Hispanic populations. Among NH Black females, greater residential segregation was associated with more total hours/day of activity (ß = 3.54, 95% CI [0.23, 6.85]). Only NH Black females living in segregated neighborhoods had more total active time. Additionally, it is important to acknowledge that these relationships may vary among NH Black and Hispanic populations. Future studies should examine the interaction between segregation and a broader range of individual, contextual, and environmental factors in relation to PA and domain-specific PA.

With priority given to various-sized samples of market-available Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha), human health consequences of trace metals along with total essential acids, including the fatty acid (FA) and amino acid (AA) profile were measured and compared to different size groups (G I, G II, and G III) using chemometric approaches. Essential amino acids were lower than nonessential amino acids. The G III contained the highest (97.55%) saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The highest concentrated metal was found in G1 among the groups and the order of metal (mg/kg) was Zn (205.01) > Mn (37.37) > Fe (69.39) > Cu (1.47) > Cr (1.31) > Ni (0.42) > Pb (0.017) > Cd (0.005). Even though the adult group showed no health hazards for Hilsa consumption, non-carcinogenic risks have been identified for G1 fish consumption by children. Continued monitoring is recommended to overcome the health consequences caused by fish consumption.

Nucleocytoplasmic Large DNA Viruses (NCLDVs, also called giant viruses) are widespread in marine systems and infect a broad range of microbial eukaryotes (protists). Recent biogeographic work has provided global snapshots of NCLDV diversity and community composition across the world's oceans, yet little information exists about the guiding 'rules' underpinning their community dynamics over time. We leveraged a five-year monthly metagenomic time-series to quantify the community composition of NCLDVs off the coast of Southern California and characterize these populations' temporal dynamics. NCLDVs were dominated by Algavirales (Phycodnaviruses, 59%) and Imitervirales (Mimiviruses, 36%). We identified clusters of NCLDVs with distinct classes of seasonal and non-seasonal temporal dynamics. Overall, NCLDV population abundances were often highly dynamic with a strong seasonal signal. The Imitervirales group had highest relative abundance in the more oligotrophic late summer and fall, while Algavirales did so in winter. Generally, closely related strains had similar temporal dynamics, suggesting that evolutionary history is a key driver of the temporal niche of marine NCLDVs. However, a few closely-related strains had drastically different seasonal dynamics, suggesting that while phylogenetic proximity often indicates ecological similarity, occasionally phenology can shift rapidly, possibly due to host-switching. Finally, we identified distinct functional content and possible host interactions of two major NCLDV orders-including connections of Imitervirales with primary producers like the diatom Chaetoceros and widespread marine grazers like Paraphysomonas and Spirotrichea ciliates. Together, our results reveal key insights on season-specific effect of phylogenetically distinct giant virus communities on marine protist metabolism, biogeochemical fluxes and carbon cycling.

Deep-sea brine pools represent rare, extreme environments, providing unique insight into the limits of life on Earth, and by analogy, the plausibility of life beyond it. A distinguishing feature of many brine pools is presence of thick microbial mats that develop at the brine-seawater interface. While these bacterial and archaeal communities have received moderate attention, viruses and their host interactions in these environments remain underexplored. To bridge this knowledge gap, we leveraged metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from three distinct zones within the NEOM brine pool system (Gulf of Aqaba) to reveal the active viral ecology around the pools. We report a remarkable diversity and activity of viruses infecting microbial hosts in this environment, including giant viruses, RNA viruses, jumbo phages, and Polinton-like viruses. Many of these form distinct clades-suggesting presence of untapped viral diversity in this ecosystem. Brine pool viral communities exhibit zone-specific differences in infection strategy-with lysogeny dominating the bacterial mat further away from the pool's center. We linked viruses to metabolically important prokaryotes-including association between a jumbo phage and a key manganese-oxidizing and arsenic-metabolizing bacterium. These foundational results illuminate the role of viruses in modulating brine pool microbial communities and biogeochemistry through revealing novel viral diversity, host associations, and spatial heterogeneity in viral dynamics.

This study examined the water quality of the Turag River, an important tributary river in Dhaka, Bangladesh in terms of physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal contamination to assess the potential risks to both ecological systems and human health. The majority of the water samples complied with the acceptable limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for various parameters including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR), except total hardness (TH). The sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), chloride (Cl-), fluoride (F-), nitrate (NO3 -), and sulfate (SO4 2-) levels in the water samples were found to be within acceptable ranges for most cases. Moreover, heavy metals including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and mercury (Hg) were analyzed and their mean concentrations (µg/L) were found in the order of Fe (244.72 ± 214.35) > Mn (28.93 ± 29.64) > Zn (22.97 ± 10.93) > Cu (8.28 ± 5.99) > Hg (8.23 ± 6.58) > As (1.34 ± 0.39) > Ni (1.20 ± 0.38) > Cr (0.67 ± 0.85) > Pb (0.61 ± 0.72) > Se (0.42 ± 0.48) > Cd (0.13 ± 0.09) which were within the acceptable limit, except Hg. The cumulative effect of all heavy metals was assessed through the heavy metal pollution index (HPI), contamination degree (Cd), and nemerow pollution index (PN). The mean value of HPI (682.38 ± 525.68) crossed the critical index value of 100, indicating an elevated level of pollution. The mean value of Cd (8.763 ± 6.48) indicates a low-moderate-significant level of contamination due to an elevated level of Hg, and for the PN it was found 174.27 ± 146.66, indicating a high level of pollution due to high level of Fe. Ecological risk index (ERI) indicated low levels of risk for Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Fe, Mn, As, Se, Cu, and Zn but a significantly high risk for Hg. The water was classified as good to excellent based on its physicochemical properties (pH, EC, TDS, COD, DO, F-, Cl-, NO3 -, and SO4 2-) while it was deemed poor to unsuitable for heavy metals according to the water quality index (WQI). Among the carcinogenic constituents, As poses the greatest carcinogenic risk, particularly for children. The mean value of Cr, Mn, and As in the HQingestion for adult and child, and Cd, Hg for child exceeded the threshold value established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), while the HQdermal values remained below the maximum limit for all heavy metals. The value of HI at all locations exceeds the threshold of 1, as specified by USEPA. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis revealed that the presence of heavy metals in the Turag River was mainly attributed to anthropogenic sources, including industrial effluent discharge from neighboring industries, domestic wastewater, and agricultural runoff containing agrochemicals from the surrounding lands.

This study investigated heavy metal accumulations in fish, water and sediment from three rivers around a major urban area in Bangladesh, namely the Rupsha, the Atai, and the Bhairab with a view to assessing the ecological and human health risks. Samples were collected from 10 stations over two seasons (summer and winter) and concentrations of 11 metals (As, Se, Pb, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V) were measured using ICP-MS. Heavy metals in water of these rivers were above the WHO higher thresholds. The Rupsha River, which runs close to industrially dense areas and the downstream part of the three-river network, demonstrated the highest As, Cu, and V concentrations during both seasons. On the other hand, As, Mn and Cr were highest in the Bhairab which is the upstream to the Rupsha and connected to several industrial setups which differ from Bhairab. The less anthropogenically connected Atai River only showed elevated concentrations of Cu and Se. Ecological risk indices indicated low pollution in the rivers during both seasons. In all three rivers and in nearly all fish species, the contamination was higher in winter than summer. Benthic and carnivorous fish species such as, Cynoglossus lingua, Glossogobius giuris, Pseudapocryptes elongatus showed higher metal accumulation compared to other species. Health risk indices like the target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) suggested low risks but pointed potential risks to human health. The outcomes of this research reports insights into metal contamination pattern in interconnected river systems.

The increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, primarily due to the use of fossil fuels, pose a significant threat to the environment and necessitate urgent action to mitigate climate change. Carbon capture and utilization technologies that can convert CO2 into economically valuable compounds have gained attention as potential solutions. Among these technologies, biocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation using bacterial whole cells shows promise for the efficient conversion of CO2 into formate, a valuable chemical compound. Although it was discovered nearly a century ago, comprehensive reviews focusing on the utilization of whole-cell bacteria as the biocatalyst in this area remain relatively limited. Therefore, this review provides an analysis of the progress, strategies, and key findings in this field. It covers the use of living cells, resting cells, or genetically modified bacteria as biocatalysts to convert CO2 into formate, either naturally or with the integration of electrochemical and protochemical techniques as sources of protons and electrons. By consolidating the current knowledge in this field, this review article aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners interested in understanding the recent progress, challenges, and potential applications of bacterial whole cell catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation into formate.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-protein amino acid that is found in the brain and central nervous system of animals as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It has been shown to have a variety of physiological functions, including stress reduction and immune enhancement. This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with GABA on growth, serum biochemistry, innate immunity, and disease resistance in juvenile olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) challenged with Edwardsiella tarda under high-stocking density. A control diet and three experimental diets were prepared, with 150 mg/kg (GABA150), 200 mg/kg (GABA200), and 250 mg/kg (GABA250) of GABA added to each diet, respectively. Each experimental diet was fed to olive flounders in triplicate with an initial weight of 12.75 g ± 0.3 g in 40 L tanks at two stocking densities: normal density (20 fish/tank) and high density (40 fish/tank). After 8 weeks of the feeding trial, growth, feed utilization, whole-body proximate compositions, blood analyses, and non-specific immune responses were measured, and challenge tests were performed. There were no significant differences in the weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) among fish fed the GABA-supplemented diets at the two stocking densities. However, the normal-density groups showed significantly higher WG and SGR than the high-density groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio among all groups. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the whole-body proximate composition analysis (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences in cortisol levels in fish fed the GABA at both densities, but the high-density group showed a significantly higher cortisol than the low-density group. Blood GABA significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner regardless of the density groups (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase activity showed significantly higher levels than the control group, but there was no significant effect of the stocking densities in fish fed the GABA diets (p < 0.05). Myeloperoxidase activities in fish fed the GABA200 and GABA250 diets showed significantly higher levels at both of the stocking densities (p < 0.05). Lysozyme activity was significantly higher in the GABA150 group than in the CON, GABA200, and GABA250 groups (p < 0.05). After 15 days of challenge tests with Edwardsiella tarda, the cumulative survival rates of the GABA150, GABA200, and GABA250 groups were significantly higher than that of the CON group (p < 0.05). The results suggested that the optimal dietary GABA level for juvenile olive flounder culture is 150 mg/kg, regardless of rearing density, to enhance growth, immunity, and disease resistance.

Spatiotemporal monitoring of pesticide residues in river water is urgently needed due to its negative environmental and human health consequences. The present study is to investigate the occurrence of multiclass pesticide residue in the surface water of the Feni River, Bangladesh, using an optimized salting-out assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (SALLME) coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The optimized SALLME method was developed and validated following the SANTE/11312/2021 guidelines. A total of 42 water samples were collected and analyzed to understand the spatiotemporal distribution of azoxystrobin (AZ), buprofezin (BUP), carbofuran (CAR), pymetrozine (PYM), dimethoate (DMT), chlorantraniliprole (CLP), and difenoconazole (DFN). At four spike levels (n = 5) of 20, 40, 200, and 400 µg/L, the recovery percentages were satisfactory, ranging between 71.1 % and 107.0 % (RSD ≤13.8 %). The residues ranged from below the detection level (BDL) to 14.5 µg/L. The most frequently detected pesticide was DMT (100 %), followed by CLP (52.3809-57.1429), CAR (4.7619-14.2867), and PYM (4.7619-9.5238). However, AZ and BUP were below the detection limit in the analyzed samples of both seasons. Most pesticides and the highest concentrations were detected in March 2023, while the lowest concentrations were present in August 2023.Furthermore, ecological risk assessment based on the general-case scenario (RQm) and worst-case scenario (RQex) indicated a high (RQ > 1) risk to aquatic organisms, from the presence of PYM and CLP residue in river water. Human health risk via dietary exposure was estimated using the hazard quotient (HQ). Based on the detected residues, the HQ (<1) value indicated no significant health risk. This report provides the first record of pesticide residue occurrences scenario and their impact on the river environment of Bangladesh.

Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods (NRs) were grown hydrothermally on the wide bandgap (∼3.86 - 4.04 eV) seed layers (SLs) of grain size ∼162 ± 35 nm, prepared using ball-milled derived ZnO powder. The synthesized ZnO NRs were further decorated with ZnS nanocrystals to achieve a ZnO NR-ZnS core-shell (CS)-like nano-scaffolds by a subsequent hydrothermal synthesis at 70 °C for 1 h. UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, x-ray diffractometry (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) coupled with Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses confirmed the formation of ZnS atop the vertically aligned ZnO NR arrays of ∼1.79 ± 0.17µm length and ∼165 ± 27 nm diameter. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/EDX analyses revealed that vertically aligned ZnO NRs (core dia. ∼181 ± 12 nm) arrays are conformally coated by an ultrathin ZnS (∼25 ± 7 nm) shell layer with a preferential ZnS{111}/ZnO{10-10}-like partial epitaxy. The ZnO NRs exhibited a sharp band edge near ∼384 nm having optical bandgap energy (Eg) of ∼3.23 eV. However, the ZnO NR-ZnS CS exhibited double absorption bands atEg∼ 3.20 eV (ZnO-core) andEg∼ 3.78 eV (ZnS-shell). The ZnS{111}/ZnO{10-10}-nano-scaffolds could be utilized to facilitate the enhanced absorption of UV photons as well as the radial junction formation between the Pb-free perovskite absorber and ZnS/ZnO NRs layers.

The Shiga Epidemiological Study of Subclinical Atherosclerosis was conducted in Kusatsu City, Shiga, Japan, from 2006 to 2008. Participants were measured for LDL-p through nuclear magnetic resonance technology. 740 men participated in follow-up and underwent 1.5 T brain magnetic resonance angiography from 2012 to 2015. Participants were categorized as no-ICAS, and ICAS consisted of mild-ICAS (1 to < 50%) and severe-ICAS (≥ 50%) in any of the arteries examined. After exclusion criteria, 711 men left for analysis, we used multiple logistic regression to examine the association between lipid profiles and ICAS prevalence. Among the study participants, 205 individuals (28.8%) had ICAS, while 144 individuals (20.3%) demonstrated discordance between LDL-c and LDL-p levels. The discordance "low LDL-c-high LDL-p" group had the highest ICAS risk with an adjusted OR (95% CI) of 2.78 (1.55-5.00) in the reference of the concordance "low LDL-c-low LDL-p" group. This was followed by the concordance "high LDL-c-high LDL-p" group of 2.56 (1.69-3.85) and the discordance "high LDL-c-low LDL-p" group of 2.40 (1.29-4.46). These findings suggest that evaluating LDL-p levels alongside LDL-c may aid in identifying adults at a higher risk for ICAS.
