Dehumanization refers to the act of likening others to objects or animals. This, in turn, mitigates feelings of conscience, guilt, and moral obligation in the face of behaviors such as violence, mistreatment, or discrimination against the dehumanized individuals. The aim of this study is to determine the extent of which women with mismatching vocal tone, occupation and appearance to their gender expectations are dehumanized by others. To achieve this, we conducted a between-groups factorial design experiment. In the experiment, participants looked at the photo and listened to the voice of a target woman with either a gender congruent or incongruent vocal tone, occupation, or appearance. Participants indicated the extent to which human attributes were appropriate for this individual. The results revealed that the main effects of vocal tone and occupation were significant for both mechanistic and animalistic dehumanization. A target woman with a mismatched vocal tone and occupation was more dehumanized compared to those with a matched vocal tone and occupation. However, the interaction effect of vocal tone, occupation type, and appearance was found to be significant only for mechanistic dehumanization. Our study provides evidence to recent concerns that women may experience dehumanization due to their vocal tone and occupation.

Introduction: Drawing on Durkheim's historical theorization of suicide, we extend his concept of anomic suicide, which is suicide due to a lack of social regulation, to introduce the concept of institutional suicide. We define institutional suicide as suicide due to the absence or decline of institutional policies, practices, and discourses for prevention. In this study, we explore the mechanisms for institutional suicides based on suicide notes Turkey, in a context without institutional responsibilization for prevention. Turkey provides a significant context for studying institutional suicides as policies, practices, and discourses for suicide prevention have been declining for some decades. Methods: Drawing on publically available suicide notes and narratives in Turkish media outlets, we analyze 17 suicide notes and responses from their institutions of work and friends, family, and colleagues. Findings and Discussion: We identify two mechanisms that lead to institutional suicides: (1) dehumanization due to lack of recognition and (2) misrecognition through a devaluation of potential. We extend the theory of anomie to institutional settings and offer social policy suggestions to improve institutional responses based on co-design based on suicide notes to prevent institutional suicides and call for institutional responsibilization for preventing work-related suicides.

For the first time, the interaction of the Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) and Chitosan (CH) with Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanotube was studied using density functional theory (DFT). The binding energies of the most stable configurations of PLGA and CH monomers absorbed on ZrO2 were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) methods. The obtained results indicate that both CH and PLGA monomers were chemisorbed on the surface of ZrO2. The interaction between PLGA and ZrO2 is stronger than that of CH due to its shorter equilibrium interval and higher binding energy. In addition, the electronic density of states (DOS) of the most stable configuration was computed to estimate the electronic properties of the PLGA/CH absorbed on ZrO2. Also, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were computed to investigate the mechanical properties of all studied compounds in individual and nanocomposite phases. MD simulation revealed that the shear and bulk moduli of PLGA, CH as well as Young's modulus increase upon interacting with the ZrO2 surface. As a result, the mechanical properties of PLGA and CH are improved by adding ZrO2 to the polymer matrix. The results showed that the elastic modulus of PLGA and CH nanocomposites decreased with increasing temperature. These findings indicate that PLGA-ZrO2 nanocomposites have mechanical and thermal properties, suggesting that they could be exploited as potential agents in biomedical sectors such as bone tissue engineering and drug delivery.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. BACKGROUND: Two subphenotypes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), hypoinflammatory and hyperinflammatory, have been reported in adults and in a single paediatric cohort. The relevance of these subphenotypes in paediatrics requires further investigation. We aimed to identify subphenotypes in two large observational cohorts of paediatric ARDS and assess their congruence with prior descriptions. METHODS: We performed latent class analysis (LCA) separately on two cohorts using biomarkers as inputs. Subphenotypes were compared on clinical characteristics and outcomes. Finally, we assessed overlap with adult cohorts using parsimonious classifiers. FINDINGS: In two cohorts from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (n=333) and from a multicentre study based at the University of California San Francisco (n=293), LCA identified two subphenotypes defined by differential elevation of biomarkers reflecting inflammation and endotheliopathy. In both cohorts, hyperinflammatory subjects had greater illness severity, more sepsis and higher mortality (41% and 28% in hyperinflammatory vs 11% and 7% in hypoinflammatory). Both cohorts demonstrated overlap with adult subphenotypes when assessed using parsimonious classifiers. INTERPRETATION: We identified hypoinflammatory and hyperinflammatory subphenotypes of paediatric ARDS from two separate cohorts with utility for prognostic and potentially predictive, enrichment. Future paediatric ARDS trials should identify and leverage biomarker-defined subphenotypes in their analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare three endoscopy operators who performed colonoscopy in three different styles in terms of procedure results, colonoscopy quality, and operator comfort during the procedure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 246 patients, who underwent routine screening colonoscopy for precancerous lesions between May and December 2022 in Istanbul Haydarpasa Numune Education and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, were prospectively analyzed. The results of three different styles (single operator sitting, single operator standing, and two operators standing) were compared with each other. The following criteria were examined: polyp/adenoma detection rate, number of polyps detected per patient, cecal intubation rate, total procedure time, number of endoscope corrective maneuvers, number of patient position corrections during the procedure, and the endoscopist's subjective pain scale after the procedure. RESULTS:  The number of corrections and changes in scope position, rates of changing the patient's position during the procedure, and the postprocedural fatigue degree of the endoscopist were the highest for the single-operator standing style (p<0.001). The total processing time and post-procedure fatigue degree of the endoscopist were the lowest for the single-operator sitting style (p<0.001). The adenoma detection rate was the highest for single-operator standing style (37.8% vs 22.0% and 29.3%). The strongest predictive factors for the total procedure time were the colonoscopy style and patient age. The strongest predictive factors for the change in the total number of detected polyps were colonoscopy style, patient gender, and patient age. Independent of all other factors, the total detected number of polyps was statistically significantly higher for the single-operator standing style compared to other styles (B=-0.217, 95% confidence interval: -0.369 - -0.066 and p=0.005) (B=-0.172, 95% confidence interval: -0.326 - -0.017 and p=0.029). CONCLUSIONS: Two conclusions were drawn from this study. For routine screening colonoscopy, the single-operator sitting style seems to be superior to other styles in terms of the shortest procedure time and the least tiring. However, the widely used single-operator standing style should be preferred over other styles in terms of the highest adenoma detection rate although it is most tiring and time-consuming.

This paper introduces an optimized DC-DC converter that employs a modified switched inductor-capacitor technique to achieve ultra-high voltage gain for renewable energy systems. The development is based on adding one cell of modified switched inductor (MSL1) with series diodes interleaved with the main switch in the proposed DC-DC converter. The (MSL1) with capacitor operates in resonant mode to reduce current stress across the main switch when the charge in capacitor becomes zero. This approach also reduces voltage stress across the main switch, all inductors, and diodes. Furthermore, modified switched inductors (MSL2) with an auxiliary switch and a coupled capacitor are incorporated to provide double boosting voltage and to achieve high voltage gain. Additionally, a main and auxiliary switch are integrated with modified switched capacitors (MSC) to provide ultra-high voltage gain and to reduce voltage stress across auxiliary switch. Moreover, the proposed converter exhibits a continuous input current with zero pulsating, even at very low duty cycles. The advantages of the proposed converter are high efficiency, low voltage stress, and low values of inductors and capacitors when utilizing a high switching frequency. A mathematical model for the proposed converter is developed for both continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode. In addition, the PCB design for the proposed converter is presented, and experimental tests are conducted to verify the simulation and laboratory results. The proposed converter aims to boost the voltage from 20 to 40 V to a variable output voltage between 200 and 400 V, delivering 400 watts of power with an efficiency of 96.2%.

The purpose of this study was to explain differences between employees who feel a sense of belonging and those who feel a sense of otherness in terms of their opinions about diversity works in their organizations. We conducted an empirical study to examine the perceptual differences between two independent groups of the study "who feel a sense of belonging" and "who feel a sense of otherness." We collected data from 792 employees working for organizations in different sizes, industries, and capital structures, which enriched the representativeness of the sample. The findings show that out-group members remain less satisfied with diversity works in their organizations based on four main issues such as "competence of diversity actors," "embeddedness of diversity works in organizational policies/practices," "diversity awareness in the HRM functions," and "diversity-related employee satisfaction." This paper makes two contributions. First, it contributes to the extant literature an understanding of the differences between those who remain indifferent to diversity works and those who care to see, speak, and hear about them. Second, with a few exceptions, extant studies on diversity works have been dominated by Western-centered research. Research is needed on countries with different macro-contextual conditions, such as different legal regulations, socio-political status, and history. For this study, survey data were collected from people who work in Turkey, a country which has limited legal measures and underdeveloped discourses for equality, diversity, and inclusion. The paper provides significant insights into leading diversity works in national settings with less developed supportive mechanisms for diversity.

Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with IBD may undergo a segmental or total colectomy, depending upon the extent of the disease. It is estimated that approximately 20 to 30 percent of patients with advanced ulcerative colitis will eventually require surgical resection. The incidence and prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) are increasing globally. There is plausible evidence linking inflammation to the initiation and perpetuation of AF. Given the importance of systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of AF, an increased risk of the development of other diseases related to systemic inflammation can be expected. Objective Study how AF can affect the outcome of the patients in a population database hospitalized due to IBD flare and in whom colectomy was performed.  Methodology Data from the National Inpatient Sample database from 2016 to 2019 were used to obtain baseline demographic numbers and outcome variables. T-tests and chi-square tests were used to compare data. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate Odds ratios for comorbidities.  Results The study identified 27,165 patients with IBD who had colectomy during the same admission, among whom 2,045 also had AF. AF patients had a statistically significant longer mean LOS than patients without AF (16.79 vs. 11.24 days, p-value 0.001). AF patients also had significantly higher hospital charges ($222,109 vs. $142,011, p-value < 0.001). The mortality rate in IBD undergoing colectomy patients with AF was higher than in patients without AF (13.45% vs. 2.69%, p-value < 0.001), which was also reflected in multivariate analysis with an odds ratio of 2.27 (p-value < 0.001) after adjusting for age, gender, race, and comorbidities. Conclusion Our study showed that a national cohort of IBD patients with a history of colectomy had increased mortality and morbidity in the presence of AF. A finding that can guide physicians to allocate more time to optimizing the management of AF in this group of patients decreases the risk of complications, length of stay, and overall mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic colitis (IC) results from compromised blood flow to the colon. Risk factors include atrial fibrillation (A.Fib), peripheral artery disease (PAD), coronary artery disease (CAD), and congestive heart failure (CHF). However, few studies compared the mortality rate and colectomy between patients with IC with CHF and IC alone. OBJECTIVE: We aim to investigate the possibility of worse outcomes in patients with IC and CHF compared to IC alone. METHODOLOGY: Using the National Inpatient Sample database from 2016 to 2019, we obtained baseline demographic data, total hospital charge, rate of colectomy, length of hospital stay (LOS), and in-hospital mortality. Data were compared using a t-test and chi-squared. Odds ratios for comorbidities including A.Fib, CAD, PAD, end-stage renal disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and cirrhosis were calculated. RESULTS: 106,705 patients with IC were identified, among which 15,220 patients also had CHF. IC patients with CHF had a longer LOS (6.6 days vs 4.4 days; P<0.0001), higher total hospital charge ($71,359 vs $45,176; P<0.0001), higher mortality rate (8.5% vs 2.9%; P<0.0001), and higher colectomy rate (9.2% vs 5.9%; P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: CHF is associated with poor outcomes in patients with IC. Our study showed an increased risk of mortality and colectomy compared to patients with IC alone. The findings suggest it may be warranted to have a heightened clinical suspicion of IC in patients with CHF who present with bleeding per rectum.

Brine is a byproduct of desalination plants and several industrial processes which can have an adverse impact on the environment if not managed properly. Conventional brine management technologies are energy intensive and costly which limit their adoption. This study presents the first cost optimization of convection-enhanced evaporation (CEE) system to achieve a modular, cost-effective brine management and on-site treatment option for decentralized desalination plants and small-volume industries. CEE involves evaporating water from saline liquid films, released on evaporation surfaces, by the difference in vapor pressure created by forced air convection. The optimization identifies the optimal operating settings (brine flow rates, brine temperatures, and air speeds) and enables comprehensive investigation of the effect of various operational decisions on operating (energy) cost, capital cost, and footprint area. The objective functions are formulated using two cost ratios that relate material, thermal, and electrical energy costs, effectively generalizing the optimization results to be independent of location-specific cost parameters. The optimization reveals two distinct operation modes, "all-electric mode" and "heating mode". The "all-electric mode" corresponds to a lower total specific cost, ranging from $1.4 to $5 per m3, and higher footprint area, ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 m2 per m3 of evaporated volume. The "heating mode" corresponds to a higher total specific cost, up to $6.5 per m3; at low energy cost ratios, a compact footprint area ranging from 0.072 to 0.5 m2 per m3 of evaporated volume is achieved. Proposed designs were found to have lower costs than technologies available in the literature.

Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos containing content related to ovarian cysts. Methods The search terms "Ovarian Cyst", "Ovarian Cyst Symptoms", "Ovarian Cyst Treatment", and "Ovarian Cyst Diagnosis" were searched on YouTube. A total of 110 videos were examined and repetitive videos, non-English videos, videos with advertising content, videos with entertainment and news content, and videos with very poor image and sound quality were excluded. Finally, the videos included in the study were evaluated using DISCERN and Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results It was found that 50 videos examined in this study were uploaded between the years 2014 and 2020, with an average of 492.252 ± 710.768 and a total of 24.612.595 views. The mean DISCERN score given to 50 videos analyzed by two researchers was 2.81 ± 1.3 and the mean GQS score was 2.88 ± 1.4. When we divided the scores given to the videos by two researchers into three groups, it was determined that 27 (54%) of the 50 videos were in the misleading/poor quality group, nine (18%) were in the medium quality group, and 14 (28%) were in the useful/quality group. Conclusion It has been determined that the videos with "ovarian cyst" content on YouTube are generally of poor quality. Bad quality videos were uploaded by non-doctors and attracted more attention than videos uploaded by doctors.

BACKGROUND: Improved understanding of the molecular basis of insecticide resistance may yield new opportunities for control of relevant disease vectors. In this current study, we investigated the quantification responses for the phenotypic and genotypic resistance of Aedes aegypti populations from different states in Malaysia. METHODS: We tested the insecticide susceptibility status of adult Ae. aegypti from populations of three states, Penang, Selangor and Kelantan (Peninsular Malaysia), against 0.25% permethrin and 0.25% pirimiphos-methyl using the World Health Organisation (WHO) adult bioassay method. Permethrin-resistant and -susceptible samples were then genotyped for domains II and III in the voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) gene using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR) for the presence of any diagnostic single-nucleotide mutations. To validate AS-PCR results and to identify any possible additional point mutations, these two domains were sequenced. RESULTS: The bioassays revealed that populations of Ae. aegypti from these three states were highly resistant towards 0.25% permethrin and 0.25% pirimiphos-methyl. Genotyping results showed that three knockdown (kdr) mutations (S989P, V1016G and F1534C) were associated with pyrethroid resistance within these populations. The presence of a novel mutation, the A1007G mutation, was also detected. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the high resistance level of Malaysian populations of Ae. aegypti to currently used insecticides. The resistance could be due to the widespread presence of four kdr mutations in the field and this could potentially impact the vector control programmes in Malaysia and alternative solutions should be sought.

Age is one of the major risk factors for the development of chronic pathologies, including kidney diseases. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction play a pathogenic role in aging kidney disease. Transcription factor NRF2, a master regulator of redox homeostasis, is altered during aging, but the exact implications of altered NRF2 signaling on age-related renal mitochondrial impairment are not yet clear. Herein, we investigated the role of sulforaphane, a well-known NRF2 activator, on age-related mitochondrial and kidney dysfunction. Young (2-4 month) and aged (20-24 month) male Fischer 344 rats were treated with sulforaphane (15 mg/kg body wt/day) in drinking water for four weeks. We observed significant impairment in renal cortical mitochondrial function along with perturbed redox homeostasis, decreased kidney function and marked impairment in NRF2 signaling in aged Fischer 344 rats. Sulforaphane significantly improved mitochondrial function and ameliorated kidney injury by increasing cortical NRF2 expression and activity and decreasing protein expression of KEAP1, an NRF2 repressor. Sulforaphane treatment did not affect the renal NRF2 expression or activity and mitochondrial function in young rats. Taken together, our results provide novel insights into the protective role of the NRF2 pathway in kidneys during aging and highlight the therapeutic potential of sulforaphane in mitigating kidney dysfunction in elders.

In this work, the ability of B12N12 fullerene-like nanoclusters as a drug carrier for isoniazid anti-tuberculosis drug has been studied by DFT methods. Binding energies in both gas and water phases are reported. The formed bonds between B12N12-FLN and Iso drug are studied and computed using QMAIM method. NPA is computed to obtain the total charges transferred in the B12N12-FLN-Iso drug complexes, NPA obtained values suggested that the cluster may oxidize the coordinated of Iso drug. The charge-transfer energy values are also computed and confirmed that the charges were transferred from the non-bonding lone-pair (n) of N and O atoms orbitals to the σ* orbitals of B and N atoms of B12N12-FLN. Also, the adsorption of Iso drug on BN nanoparticles surface (different sizes and shapes) and BN nanotubes was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. We found that increasing the BN size did not affect significantly on the adsorption energies of Iso drug for all various BN nanoparticles shapes. All adsorption energies obtained by MC calculations are negative values which revealed that the adsorption of the Iso drug molecule on BN surfaces is exothermic, spontaneous and energetically favourable. Also, the stability of B12N12-FLN-Iso drug complex in water explicitly was studied by MD simulations. MD simulation confirmed that iso-B12N12-FLN complexes are stable in the presence of water molecules. So, finally, we deduced that B12N12 fullerene-like nanoclusters can be acted as a drug carrier for isoniazid anti-tuberculosis drug. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Sexuality is an understated yet increasingly important motive for migration. Motivation to migrate is often viewed from a polarized lens, either as the pursuit of economic security or as a desire to access to human rights, on which social policy on migration has been predicated. We introduce the notion of the toxic triangle to account for contexts that prove hostile to freedom of sexuality and trigger individuals to migrate. Drawing on insights from 25 interviews, we demonstrate how sexuality remains a silent yet significant contributor to individuals' decisions to migrate from an adversarial context. We illustrate how the participants fall into four archetypes of dreamers, climbers, escapists, and seekers, based on their endowments and experiences of sexuality and gender identity as salient sources of their motivation to migrate. Focusing on the hidden side of Turkish migration to the UK offers insights into how the pursuit of freedom of sexuality in terms of safety and security shapes motivations and experiences of migration across two cultures.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the most frequent malignancies in women, and it is a major cause of cancer death worldwide, as well as one of the leading causes of cancer mortality. Traditional herbal therapy has been widely used in some developing countries as a complementary and alternative technique. Because of their low toxicity, medicinal edible plants have been allowed to minimize the risk of breast cancer and other diseases. The heart of Phoenix dactylifera is a well-known, safe, and common edible part of the P. dactylifera plant (Hilawi variety). The biological properties of heart of P. dactylifera are unclear, and the appeal warrants further investigation. The aim of this study is to look into the chemical compositions, antioxidant and anticancer properties of heart of P. dactylifera extract obtained via microwave-assisted extraction. METHODS: Microwave-assisted extraction, ethanol solvent, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis, DPPH assay, MTT assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining, cell cycle, reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis were all used to evaluate the activity of heart of P. dactylifera. RESULTS: GC-MS was used to identify the chemical compositions of heart of P. dactylifera extract, which revealed about 15 bioactive compounds. The antioxidant activity of heart of P. dactylifera extract was determined to have an IC50 value of 114.2 µg/ml. The cytotoxicity was measured using MCF-7 cells, and the IC50 was reported to be 620.1 µg/ml. The cell cycle was arrested at the G1 gate, resulting in the formation of reactive oxygen species and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that regular consumption of P. dactylifera heart components is important for nutrition and immune system support in the prevention of breast cancer, and that more research into molecular apoptotic pathways is needed.

Advances in DNA sequencing and proteomics mean that researchers must now regularly interrogate thousands of positional gene/protein changes in order to find those relevant for potential clinical application or biological insights. The abundance of already known information on protein interactions, mechanism, and tertiary structure provides the possible means to understand these changes rapidly, though a careful and systematic integration of these diverse datasets is first needed. For this purpose, we developed Mechnetor, a tool that allows users to quickly explore and visualize integrated mechanistic data for proteins or interactions of interest. Central to the system is a careful cataloguing of diverse sources of protein interaction mechanism, and an efficient means to visualize interactions between relevant and/or known protein regions. The result is a finer resolution interaction network that provides more immediate clues as to points of intervention or mechanistic understanding. Users can import protein, interactions, genetic variants or post-translational modifications and see these data in the best known mechanistic context. We demonstrate the tool with topical examples in human genetic diseases and cancer genomics. The tool is freely available at: mechnetor.russelllab.org.

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is a highly selective method that reduces the time and number of solvents used, has high efficiency, and is environmentally friendly. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial activities of Iraqi Terfezia claveryi desert truffle extract and silver nanoparticles by MAE using water and hexane as extraction solvents. Chemical compositions were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Silver nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Antioxidant activity was assessed with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against four types of pathogenic bacteria, and anticancer activity was also assessed. The T. claveryi hexane extract showed approximately 18 bioactive compounds, with an antioxidant half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 6.896 µg/mL. This extract also had significant antibacterial action against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A cytotoxicity test of the hexane extract showed moderate toxicity against hepatocellular carcinoma mouse (HCAM) liver cancer cells. Acridine orange/ ethidium bromide staining showed apoptosis and DNA damage in HCAM cells treated with the hexane extract. The results of this study suggest that components of the T. claveryi wild desert truffle could have important nutrition functions that might support the immune system in fighting liver diseases when taken in daily regular doses.
