RESUMO

This paper presents a significant scheme to drive the numerical solution of multi-dimensional diffusion problems where the fractional derivatives are taken in Caputo sense. The Mohand homotopy integral transform scheme (MHITS) is the composition of Mohand integral transform (MIT) and the homotopy perturbation scheme (HPS) which can be used to investigate the numerical solution in the form of convergence series. This approach does not require any presumptions, limitations on elements, or any other hypothesis. The primary objective of this strategy is to perform its direct implementation to the recurrence relation. This method produces results in the form of a convergent series, which accurately predicts the exact results. Graphical results and plot error distribution show an excellent agreement between MHITS results and the exact solution.

RESUMO

Heavy metal stress poses a significant threat to the productivity of agricultural systems and human health. Silicon (Si) is widely reported to be very effective against the different heavy metal stresses in crops. According to reports, it can help plants that are under cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) stress. The presented work investigated how silicon interacted in Cd- and Ni-stressed wheat and mitigated metal toxicity. A pot experiment was carried out in which wheat crop was irrigated with Cd- and Ni-contaminated water. Application of Cd and Ni-contaminated water to wheat significantly reduced the root and shoot growth parameters and physiological and biochemical factors while increasing the antioxidant enzymatic activity and bioaccumulation of Cd and Ni metal in shoot and root as compared to the control. Application of Si led to an improvement in physiological parameters, i.e., greenness of leaves, i.e., SPAD values (17% and 26%), membrane stability (26% and 25%), and growth parameters i.e., root surface area (42% and 23%), root length (81% and 79%), root dry weight (456% and 190%), root volume (64% and 32%), shoot length (41% and 35%), shoot dry weight of shoot (111% and 117%), and overall grain weight (62% and 72%) under Cd and Ni stress, respectively. It increased the activity of antioxidant activity (max. up to 20%) whereas decreased the metal bioaccumulation of Cd and Ni in the roots and shoot (max. up to 62%) of wheat. It was concluded that the application of Si potentially increases antioxidant activity and metal chelation resulting in decreased oxidative damage and reducing the effect of Cd and Ni stress on wheat which improves growth and physiological parameters as well as inhibits Cd and Ni inclusion in food chain under Cd and Ni toxicity reducing health risks associated with these metals.

RESUMO

Introduction: Flight attendants, as the front-line staff in the cabin, play a crucial role in improving air travel safety. This research explores how psychological safety affects flight attendants' adoption of mindful safety practices through voice participation. This mechanism also identifies ethical leadership and traditionality as two moderators. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data from 621 flight attendants in Chinese private commercial airline companies. PLS-SEM (partial least square structured equation modeling) is used to examine the hypotheses proposed in the present study. Results: After data analysis, the results reveal that the underlying mechanism covering both mediating and moderating effects through which flight attendants' voluntary and extra-role safety behavior could be improved. Discussion: The findings extend the existing literature regarding the antecedents of flight attendants' mindful safety practices adoption and obstacles to employee voice participation. Managerial implications are also provided in the commercial aviation industry and discussed along with future research directions.

RESUMO

The molecular energy, which is the sum of all eigenvalues, is crucial in determining the total π-electron energy of conjugated hydrocarbon molecules. We used machine learning techniques to calculate the energy, inertia, nullity, signature, and Estrada index of molecular graphs for bismuth tri-iodide and benzene rings embedded in P-type surfaces within 2D networks. We applied MATLAB to extract the actual eigenvalues from the data and developed general equations for these molecular properties. We then used these equations to estimate the values and compared them to the actual values through graphical analysis. Our results demonstrate the potential of data-driven techniques in predicting molecular properties and enhancing our understanding of spectral theory.

RESUMO

In the current study, NiO nanoparticles, MnO nanoparticles, and Mn2NiO4 nanocomposites (Ni-NPs, Mn-NPs and MN-NCs, respectively) were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method, and their performance in the removal of amaranth (AM) dye from synthetic wastewater was compared. XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, BET analysis, and TGA were performed to characterize the produced catalysts. The effect of pertinent parameters, including pH, dosage of catalysts, temperature, and shaking speed on the uptake of AM was investigated through batch experiments. The MN-NCs showed ultrafast and high efficiency for AM removal compared to their counter parts Mn-NPs and Ni-NPs. Under ideal conditions, the highest adsorption efficiencies of AM onto Ni-NPs, Mn-NPs, and MN-NCs were calculated to be 80.50%, 93.85%, and 98.50%, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm fitted the experimental data of AM removal better as shown by the higher values of r 2, compared to the Freundlich isotherm, indicating monolayer type adsorption of AM. According to kinetic analyses, the adsorption of AM was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, regeneration/recycling studies showed that MN-NCs retained 79% adsorption efficiency after four cycles. DFT experiments were also conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the process and behavior of AM adsorption. In conclusion, as Ni-NPs, Mn-NPs, and MN-NCs adsorb AM predominantly via electrostatic interaction, they can be applied for the removal of both cationic and anionic dyes by controlling the pH factor.

RESUMO

NS1 is an elusive dengue protein, involved in viral replication, assembly, pathogenesis, and immune evasion. Its levels in blood plasm are positively related to disease severity like thrombocytopenia, hemorrhage, and vascular leakage. Despite its pathogenic roles, NS1 is being used in various vaccine formulations due to its sequence conservancy, ability to produce protective antibodies and low risk for inducing antibody-dependent enhancement. In this study, we have used bioinformatics tools and reported literature to develop an NS1 variant (dNS1). Molecular docking studies were performed to evaluate the receptor-binding ability of the NS1 and dNS1 with TLR4. NS1 and dNS1 (153 to 312 amino acid region) genes were cloned, expressed and protein was purified followed by refolding. Docking studies showed the binding of NS1 and dNS1 with the TLR4 receptor which suggests that N and C-terminal sequences of NS1 are not critical for receptor binding. Antibodies against NS1 and dNS1 were raised in rabbits and binding affinity of anti-dNS1 anti-NS1 sera was evaluated against both NS1 and dNS1. Similar results were observed through western blotting which highlight that N and C-terminal deletion of NS1 does not compromise the immunogenic potential of dNS1 hence, supports its use in future vaccine formulations as a substitute for NS1.

RESUMO

Background and objective Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant global public health challenge, especially among the Asian population who experience higher prevalence and more rapid disease progression. This study aimed to compare the epidemiology and risk factors associated with CKD between rural and urban residents in Peshawar, Pakistan. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study involving adult patients with CKD was conducted at a public tertiary care hospital in Peshawar between July 2023 and January 2024. To collect data, a tool was developed based on existing literature. CKD was defined as follows: a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2, albuminuria (urine albumin-creatinine ratio >3 mg/mmol), or a combination of both low eGFR and albuminuria. The prevalence of moderate to severe CKD, adjusted for place of residence, was calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics V. 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results Among the study sample, 114 (41.45%) patients hailed from rural areas while 161 (58.55%) resided in urban areas. Urban patients had a higher prevalence of albuminuria levels below 30 mg/g than rural patients (83.2% vs. 76.3%, p=0.00). Additionally, the mean eGFR was slightly higher among rural residents. Rural patients had a higher prevalence of hypertension, and there was a noticeable disparity in the occurrence of kidney stones, with rural residents experiencing a greater incidence. Patients living in urban areas showed a higher level of understanding of risk factors and reported taking preventive measures for CKD. Factors associated with moderate to severe CKD included living in urban areas and having a medical history of diabetes and hypertension (p=0.00). No significant association was observed between behavioral factors and the severity of CKD. Conclusions Urban residents exhibited higher rates of CKD and albuminuria and had a greater awareness of CKD risk factors. In contrast, rural areas had a slightly higher mean eGFR and greater prevalence of hypertension and kidney stones. Diabetes and hypertension were key predictors of moderate to severe CKD.

RESUMO

Background The objective of our investigation was to evaluate the mortality rate and predictor factors that are associated with bloodstream infections (BSIs) in elderly patients who are admitted to the internal medicine ward. Materials and methods A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted at a 550-bed tertiary care hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan, from January 2021 to June 2022. The study involved elderly inpatients aged 65 and older with positive culture results detected within two days of admission. Data collection involved demographic and patient-related risk variables, BSI-related risk factors, and environmental risk factors, with statistical analysis performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 26.0, Armonk, NY). Results Of the total study sample (n=186), 103 (55.4%) survived while 83 (44.6%) did not. The non-survivor group had a higher median Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (6 vs. 2, p<0.0001) and Charlson Comorbidity Index (5 ± 2 vs. 3 ± 2, p<0.0001), with more frequent immunosuppression (25.3% vs. 8.7%, p=0.001). Additionally, gram-positive bacteria were more common in non-survivors (42% vs. 10%, p<0.0001), while gram-negative bacteria were more prevalent in survivors (73% vs. 36%, p=0.002). Conclusions Our research validates that BSI in older adults is a serious condition that is linked to a substantial death rate during hospitalization. The biggest determinant of death in older patients with BSI is the severity of clinical symptoms evaluated by the SOFA score upon admission. It is imperative to acknowledge that respiratory-induced BSIs are the most fatal, and patients who are hospitalized and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) are at an elevated risk.

RESUMO

Spermatic cord malignancies are a scarce modality and liposarcoma of spermatic cord is even a rarer condition encountered. Liposarcoma is usually a slowly progressive, non-tender, well circumscribed mass of variable shapes owing to conformity to fascial compartments. We are reporting a case of 65-year-old male, with a two-month history of initially tender and later non-tender mass in the scrotum, above the testis. Ultrasonography showed a right mid inguinal mass measuring 6x3x3 cm at the superior pole of the right testis and small fluid around the right testis. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the right inguinal mass revealed a spindle cell neoplasm. The patient underwent right inguinal radical orchiectomy with local wide excision of the sarcoma of the spermatic cord origin. Final histopathology confirmed dedifferentiated liposarcoma. No adjuvant treatment was offered and the patient was put on surveillance. Follow-up of more than 10 months has not revealed any local recurrence, regional or non-regional lymph nodes, or systemic metastasis.

RESUMO

This study explores copyrolysis of soybean straw (SS) with hydrogen-rich tire waste (TW) to enhance pyrolytic product quality and reduce pollutant emissions. Addition of TW increased SS biomass conversion from 67.19 to 72.46% and decreased coke/residue formation from 32.81 to 27.54%. The activation energy dropped to 121.84 kJ/mol from 160.73 kJ/mol (as calculated by the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose method) and 122.78 kJ/mol from 159.76 kJ/mol (as calculated by the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method). Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) showed lowered CO2, NO2, and SO2 emissions (5.58, 5.72, 3.38) compared to conventional SS pyrolysis (18.38, 11.55, 12.37). Yields of value-added chemicals (phenols, olefins, aromatics) increased (32.38, 22.17, 30.18%) versus conventional SS pyrolysis (23.56, 13.78, 20.36%). Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/GC-MS) analysis reveals that the addition of TW leads to a decrease in the production of oxygenates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, reducing their yields to 8.96 and 7.67%, respectively, down from 19.37 and 14.37%. Simultaneously, it enhances the yields of olefins, aromatics, phenols, and aliphatic hydrocarbons to 23.38, 26.78, 26.17, and 25.78%, respectively, compared to 15.37%, 15.29, 18.36, and 17.25%, respectively, in the absence of TW. In summary, copyrolysis of TW with SS improves product quality and reduces pollutant emissions, marking a significant research contribution.

RESUMO

Objectives: To determine the response of various histological types of locally advanced rectal cancer to neoadjuvant multimodality therapy. METHODS: The non-randomised, quasi-experimental retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and comprised data of patients treated between January 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021. The data retrieved related to histologically proven and locally advanced rectal cancer patients aged 18-70 years receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Radiotherapy dose was 45 gray to pelvis with a boost to gross tumour of 5.4 gray in 3 fractions by using volumetric arc therapy concurrently with capecitabine 625mg/m² daily. A magnetic resonance imaging scan of pelvis with contrast was done at 5-10 weeks before surgery. Histological response to neoadjuvant treatment of various histological types was evaluated using the Rectal Cancer Regression Grade. Data was analysed using SPSS 22. RESULTS: Of the 182 patients evaluated, 108(59.34%) were included; 64(59.3%) males and 44(40.7%) females. The overall mean age was 45.4±5.2 years. Regression status was grade 1 in 24(22%) patients, grade 2 in 43(40%) and grade 3 in 41(38%) (p=0.074). There were 12(11.11%) patients with signet ring cell and 10(83.3%) showed pathological tumour regression. There were 17(15.74%) patients with mucinous variant, and 12(70.5%) had tumour regression. There were 79(73.15%) patients with adenocarcinoma, and 59(74.6%) of them showed tumour regression. . CONCLUSIONS: There was less tumour regression in mucinous and signet ring cell variants of adenocarcinoma. Modification and intensification of neoadjuvant therapy may be required in such histologies.

RESUMO

The study of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) model is widely used for simulating several scientific phenomena, including the evolution of water wave surfaces, the processes of soliton diffusion, and the electromagnetic field of transmission. In current study, we explore some multiple soliton solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional generalized KP model via applying modified Sardar sub-equation approach (MSSEA). By extracting the novel soliton solutions, we can effectively obtain singular, dark, combo, periodic and plane wave solutions through a multiple physical regions. We also investigate the chaotic structure of governing model using the chaos theory. The behavior of the collected solutions is visually depicted to demonstrate the physical properties of the proposed model. The solutions obtained in this paper can expand the existing solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional KP model and enhance our understanding of the nonlinear dynamic behaviors. This approach allows for consistent and effective treatment of the computation process for nonlinear KP model.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the adverse impacts of abusive supervision on helping behaviors among employees, as mediating by intention to leave and moderating by Islamic work ethics (IWE). DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A quantitative approach was employed, and the sample consisted of 283 nurses working in various public sector hospitals in Pakistan. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS and AMOS with the PROCESS macro. FINDINGS: The results suggest that abusive supervision diminishes helping behavior among nurses. Additionally, the study reveals that intention to leave mediates the relationship of abusive supervision and nurses' helping behavior. Moreover, the introduction of IWE as a boundary condition reveals that the mediated link is weaker when IWE is higher, and vice versa. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This study provides valuable insights for hospital authorities to develop intervention strategies and policies aimed at reducing abusive supervision in hospitals. Hospital management should also be aware of the detrimental effects of abusive supervision on nurses' helping behaviors, which can be mitigated by promoting ethical values aligned with IWE. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This study makes a valuable contribution to the limited research on the link between abusive supervision and helping behaviors in hospital settings. It offers new perspectives by incorporating the Conservation of Resources theory, particularly within the healthcare sector. Furthermore, this research expands the current knowledge by investigating the mediating influence of intention to leave and the moderating effect of IWE in mitigating the adverse impact of abusive supervision on nurses' helping behavior in Pakistan's public sector hospitals.

RESUMO

Quantum materials, with nontrivial quantum phenomena and mechanisms, promise efficient quantum technologies with enhanced functionalities. Quantum technology is held back because a gap between fundamental science and its implementation is not fully understood yet. In order to capitalize the quantum advantage, a new perspective is required to figure out and close this gap. In this review, spin gapless quantum materials, featured by fully spin-polarized bands and the electron/hole transport, are discussed from the perspective of fundamental understanding and device applications. Spin gapless quantum materials can be simulated by minimal two-band models and could help to understand band structure engineering in various topological quantum materials discovered so far. It is explicitly highlighted that various types of spin gapless band dispersion are fundamental ingredients to understand quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on conventional transport in the bulk and topological transport on the boundaries, various spintronic device aspects of spin gapless quantum materials as well as their advantages in different models for topological field effect transistors are reviewed.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) cause significant global morbidity, mortality and public health burden annually. CVD alters richness, diversity, and composition of Gut microbiota along with RAS and histopathological differences. Present study explores Metformin role in mitigating doxorubicin induced cardiovascular toxicity/remodeling. Animals were divided into 4 groups with n=6: Group I (N. Control) free access to diet and water; Group II (MET. Control) on oral Metformin (250 mg/kg) daily; Group III (DOX. Control) alternate day intraperitoneal Doxorubicin (3 mg/kg) totaling 18 mg/kg; Group IV (DOX. MET. Control) received both daily oral Metformin (250 mg/kg) and alternate day Doxorubicin (3 mg/kg). Gut microbial analysis was made from stool before animals were sacrificed for biochemical and histopathological analysis. Significant alterations were observed in ɑ and ß-diversity with new genus from Firmicutes, specifically Clostridia_UCG-014, Eubacterium ruminantium, and Tunicibacter, were prevalent in both the DOX. Control and DOX.MET groups. Proteobacteria, represented by Succinivibrio, were absent in all groups. Additionally, Parabacteroides from the Bacteroidia phylum was absent in all groups except the N. control. In the DOX.MET Control group, levels of Angiotensin II ( 7.75± 0.49 nmol/min, p<0.01) and Renin (2.60±0.26 ng/ml/hr) were significantly reduced. Conversely, levels of CK-MB, Fibrinogen, Troponin, CRP ( p < 0.0001), and TNFɑ (p < 0.05) were elevated. Histopathological examination revealed substantial cardiac changes, including Fibrinogen and fat deposition and eosinophilic infiltration, as well as liver damage characterized by binucleated cells and damaged hepatocytes, along with altered renal tissues in the DOX.MET.Control group. The findings suggest that MET. significantly modifies gut microbiota, particularly impacting the Firmicutes and Proteobacteria phyla. The reduction in Angiotensin II levels, alongside increased inflammatory markers and myocardial damage, highlights the complex interactions and potential adverse effects associated with MET therapy on cardiovascular health.

RESUMO

Radial neck fractures with radial head rotation are very rare and extremely difficult to manage. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl who fell on her outstretched left upper extremity and damaged her left elbow in a road traffic accident. An arthrotomy was performed under a C-Arm fluoroscope, which confirmed the radial head displacement of 180° along with the fracture. The fracture site was reduced and fixed with two Kirschner wires, cutting the wire short at its distal end for a complete closure. Open reduction and internal fixation were followed by casting for five weeks. After two years of follow-up, she had complete pain free range of motion of the affected limb. No post-operative complications have been observed till date. Open reduction and internal fixation with two Kwires is a viable option for such complex injuries. However, further evaluation of outcomes and post-operative complications are required.
