RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, ketamine has gained significant interest in psychiatry as a potential treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), especially in individuals who are resistant to traditional therapies or are at a high risk of suicide. Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can provide insight into how ketamine alters brain function and contributes to its antidepressant properties. METHODS: This mini-review followed the MOOSE guidelines for systematic reviews of observational studies. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using keywords and MeSH terms, such as 'major depressive disorder,' 'ketamine,' 'esketamine,' "task-based fMRI". RESULTS: Eight articles were included in the study. Results showed that ketamine affects brain activity in MDD, especially in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and amygdala. Interestingly, the majority of the reviewed studies showed a correlation between the changes in brain activity induced by ketamine and improvements in clinical depressive symptoms. These correlations involved the prefrontal cortex, ACC, and cortico-cerebellar circuits. LIMITATIONS: Lack of longitudinal data on the lasting effects of ketamine on brain activity and the small number of studies. CONCLUSIONS: This review identifies key research areas that can enhance understanding ketamine's effects on the brain in MDD. It calls for studies on ketamine's mechanisms of action, long-term impact, dose-response optimization, and comparisons with other fast-acting antidepressants. Addressing these areas can optimize ketamine's therapeutic use and reveal new treatment targets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Islet transplantation is an effective treatment for diabetes or even its complications. Aim of this study is to investigate efficacy of biomaterial treated islet transplantation on treating diabetic nephropathy. METHODS: Male rats were randomly divided into 6 groups; Control, diabetic control, diabetic transplanted with untreated islets, with platelet rich plasma treated islets, with pancreatic islets homogenate treated islets, or with these biomaterials combination treated islets. Islets cultured with biomaterials and transplanted to diabetic rats. After 60 days, biochemical, oxidative stress, and stereological parameters were assessed. RESULTS: Serum albumin and BUN concentration, decreased and increased respectively, Oxidative stress of kidney impaired, kidney weight, volume of kidney, cortex, medulla, glomerulus, proximal and distal tubules, collecting ducts, vessels, inflammatory, necrotic and fibrotic tissue in diabetic group increased compared to control group (p < 0.001). In treated groups, especially pancreatic islets homogenate treated islets transplanting animals, there was significant changes in kidney weight, and volume of kidney, proximal and distal tubules, Henle's loop and collecting ducts compared with diabetic group (p = 0.013 to p < 0.001). Combination treated islets animals showed significant increase in vessel volume compared to diabetic group (p < 0.001). Necrotic and fibrotic tissue significantly decreased in islets treated than untreated islet animals, it was higher in pancreatic islets homogenate, and combination treated islets groups (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Biomaterials treated islets transplanting could improve diabetic nephropathy. Improvement of oxidative stress followed by controlling glucose level, and effects of growth factors presenting in biomaterials can be considered as capable underlying mechanism of ameliorating inflammatory, necrotic and fibrotic tissue volume.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Some of the women experience low self-esteem and negative body image in pregnancy and postpartum. These two factors along with other factors can reduce the rate of exclusive breastfeeding among women. Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is one of the psychological approaches that is effective on the betterment of many of the psychological and personality disorders such as body image disorders as well as improvement of self-esteem. The aim of this randomized control trial is to recognize the effects of CBT during pregnancy period on self-esteem, body image (primary outcome) and exclusive breastfeeding (secondary outcome). METHOD: In this randomized controlled trial, 70 eligible pregnant women referring to health centers of Tabriz- Iran were assigned to two groups of 35 as intervention and control groups using randomized blocking method. For intervention group, 8 sessions of CBT based on Cash and Strachan's body image protocol and Michael Free's for self-esteem were performed. Control group was received routine pregnancy care by their health provider. Rosenberg self-esteem scale and multidimensional body self-relation questionnaire (MBSRQ) were completed before intervention, immediately after intervention and 4 weeks after delivery. Likewise, exclusive breastfeeding questionnaire was completed 4 weeks after childbirth. Independent t-test, chi square and repeated measures ANOVA tests were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: According to repeated measures ANOVA test and with controlling baseline score, the mean scores on self-esteem (AMD): 7.18; 95%confidence interval (CI): 4.43 to 9.94; p < 0.001)) and body image (AMD: 49.74; 95%CI = 28.57 to 70.91; p < 0.001) in the intervention group were significantly higher than the control group. Also, after intervention, the mean score of body image subscales including appearance evaluation (p = 0.010), appearance orientation (p = 0.001), fitness evaluation (p = 0.004), fitness orientation (p = 0.001), health evaluation (p = 0.001), health orientation (p = 0.018), and illness orientation (p = 0.002) was significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: CBT was effective on the improvement of self-esteem and body image and through which might lead to the increase of exclusive breastfeeding among women. RESUMO

PURPOSE: QT prolongation is one of the main unwanted cardiac effects caused by drugs, such as anti-psychotics and anti-depressants, inducing mainly via hERG channel dysfunction. The precise and underlying mechanism of adverse effects on hERG channel are still indecisive, but these effects limit their use in patients with cardiac risk factors. The aim of this review was studying mechanism of Long-term QT syndrome induction via hERG channel dysfunction by these Drugs. METHOD: Search was performed in PubMed, and Scopus. All human, animals, and cell lines studies, English and full text publications were included. Among 1280 papers, 23 studies were eligible for more assessments. Quality of studies cheeked by two researchers independently. KEY FINDING: most of studies were done on anti-psychotic drugs, especially typical class. Most used investigated method to long-term QT induction was patch clamp. SIGNIFICANCE: results suggests in susceptible cases with heart risk factors, these drugs should be taken with caution and monitored.

RESUMO

Background, recently, amnion-chorion membranes (ACMs), has provided new strategy to induce tissue regeneration in periodontal disorders. These biomaterials are rich sources of various biomarkers such as growth factors, proteins, and stem cells (SCs) which can accelerate regeneration. Numerous studies have been investigated beneficial effects of these materials on periodontal disorders9 tissue regeneration. Objective, the aim of this review was to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of these biomaterials, (combination of different effective biomarkers and SCs), more cost-effectiveness and with lower immune adverse effects on tissue regenerating in periodontal diseases. Methods, inclusion criterion was the English language and full text publications. Reviews, or strategies other than ACMs application for periodontal disorders treatment, and mechanism other than tissue regeneration were excluded. Data source, this search was done in PubMed, web of science (WOS) and Scopus using keywords. The search were repeated in May 2023 to identify any report that emerged during the time to develop the manuscript. After assessing bias, total of 151 articles were initially identified. After deleting duplication (30) using hand- screening, 121 papers met all inclusion criteria and were selected. Moreover, 31 papers were reviewed and excluded. Among remained articles (90), 57 articles excluded due to unrelated, 33 articles were assessed for the efficacy of ACMs on treating periodontal disorders. The most of studies used this material in the coronally flap technique. Miller recession defects was the most investigated periodontal disorder and clinical parameters were the most evaluated parameters in assessing the efficacy of ACMs. Discussion, different findings might be explained by different study designs, application techniques, or periodontal disorders in these studies. In the present review, we summarize the impacts of ACMs on tissues regeneration in treating periodontal disorders, but despite the promising and ameliorating results of this review, further studies are needed to assess these beneficial effects tissue to clarify the their helpfulness in clinical management of periodontal disorders. This review did not receive any funding.

RESUMO

Stem cells provided new opportunity to treat various diseases, including liver disorders. Stem cells are unspecialized cells, stimulating influential research interest be indebted to their multipotent self-renewal capacity and differentiation characteristics into several specialized cell types. Many factors contribute to their differentiation into different cell types such as insulin producing cells, osteoblast, and hepatocytes. Accordingly, wide range methods and materials have been used to transform stem cells into hepatocytes, but effectiveness of differentiation is different and depends on several factors such as cell-to-cell adhesion, cell-to-cell contact, and cell biological change. Search was done in PubMed, Scopus, and WOS to evaluate results of studies about stem cells differentiation for higher efficacy. Among more than 28000 papers, 51 studies were considered eligible for more evaluations. Results indicated that most studies were performed on mesenchymal stem cells compared with other types. Acute liver failure was the most investigated liver disorder, and tissue engineering was the most investigated differentiation methods. Also, functional parameters were the most evaluated parameters in assessing differentiation efficacy. We summarize recent advances in increasing efficiency of stem cells differentiation using varied materials, since promising results of this review, further studies are needed to assess efficiency and safety of these cells transplantation in some liver disease treatment.

RESUMO

Energy transport within biological systems is critical for biological functions in living cells and for technological applications in molecular motors. Biological systems have very complex dynamics supporting a large number of biochemical and biophysical processes. In the current work, we study the energy transport along protein chains. We examine the influence of different factors such as temperature, salt concentration, and external mechanical drive on the energy flux through protein chains. We obtain that energy fluctuations around the average value for short chains are greater than for longer chains. In addition, the external mechanical load is the most effective agent on bioenergy transport along the studied protein systems. Our results can help design a functional nano-scaled molecular motor based on energy transport along protein chains.

RESUMO

In recent years large datasets of lexical processing times have been released for several languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Dutch. Such datasets have enabled us to study, compare, and model the global effects of many psycholinguistic measures such as word frequency, orthographic neighborhood (ON) size, and word length. We have compiled and publicly released a frequency and ON dictionary of 64,546 words and 1800 plausible NWs from a language that has been relatively little studied by psycholinguists: Persian. We have also collected visual lexical decision reaction times for 1800 Persian words and nonwords. Persian offers an interesting psycholinguistic environment for several reasons, including that it has few long words and has resultantly dense orthographic neighborhoods. These characteristics provide us with an opportunity to contrast how these factors affect lexical access by comparing them to several other languages. The results suggest that sensitivity to word length and orthographic neighbourhood may reflect the statistical structure of a particular language, rather than being a universal element of lexical processing. The dictionary and LDRT data are available from https://osf.io/tb4m6/ .

RESUMO

We present a simple, sensitive, and specific colorimetric using the peroxidase properties method based on Pt doped WO3 nanosheets to detect the cysteine. Pt@WO3NSs were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) methods. The response surface methodology (RSM) method based on the central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize test parameters such as pH, nanosheet concentration, and temperature. When cysteine is present in the environment due to its competition with 3,3', 5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the use of hydrogen peroxide, the blue discoloration is reduced compared to the absence of cysteine and leads to its detection. We have favorably created a peculiar approach for sensing cysteine based on the colorimetric method in solution and paper with linear range 0.01-15 µM, 0.005-14 µM and R2 = 0.9887 and R2 = 0.9871 respectively. The detection limit for solution-based is 1.2 nM and for paper-based is 1 nM.

RESUMO

Cysteine is an essential biothiol that plays various functions in the human body. Decrease or exceeding of this excellent antioxidant from the expected range will lead to so many problems. Thus, appropriate sensing of it would be of great importance. Sulfur-doped carbon Dots(S-CDs) owe excellent fluorescence emission. Therefore, designing a Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system between S-CDs as donor and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated tungsten disulfide nanosheet (WS2 NSs) would be a perfect strategy for cysteine detection. Excitation at 340 nm will give the maximum quantum yield of S-CDs (21%) and fluorescence emission peak at 460 nm. In the presence of cysteine, the FRET mechanism inhibited through the affinity of cysteine's functional groups (-SH and -NH2) toward AuNPs and S-CDs fluorescence emission was recovered. To find the best efficiency of the system, optimization of pH, temperature, and time was investigated. Here the linear range of 3-275 µM and limit of detection of 0.01 µM was obtained. Finally, the fluorescence method was applied to the analysis of cysteine in human blood serum, which poses the potential of rapid and sensitive sensing. It can detect both lower and higher amounts of serum cysteine.

RESUMO

Graphene-based nanomaterials with remarkable properties, such as good biocompatibility, strong mechanical strength, and outstanding electrical conductivity, have dramatically shown excellent potential in various applications. Increasing surface area and porosity percentage, improvement of adsorption capacities, reduction of adsorption energy barrier, and also prevention of agglomeration of graphene layers are the main advantages of functionalized graphene nanocomposites. On the other hand, Cerium nanostructures with remarkable properties have received a great deal of attention in a wide range of fields; however, in some cases low conductivity limits their application in different applications. Therefore, the combination of cerium structures and graphene networks has been widely invesitaged to improve properties of the composite. In order to have a comprehensive information of these nanonetworks, this research reviews the recent developments in cerium functionalized graphene derivatives (graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and graphene quantum dot (GQD) and their industrial applications. The applications of functionalized graphene derivatives have also been successfully summarized. This systematic review study of graphene networks decorated with different structure of Cerium have potential to pave the way for scientific research not only in field of material science but also in fluorescent sensing, electrochemical sensing, supercapacitors, and catalyst as a new candidate.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to various neurological manifestations. There is an urgent need for a summary of neuroimaging findings to accelerate diagnosis and treatment plans. We reviewed prospective and retrospective studies to classify neurological abnormalities observed in patients with the SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: The relevant studies published in Scopus, PubMed and Clarivate Analytics databases were analysed. The search was performed for full-text articles published from 23 January 2020 to 23 February 2021. RESULTS: In 23 studies the number of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection was 20,850 and the number of patients with neurological manifestations was 1996 (9.5%). The total number of patients with neuroradiological abnormalities was 602 (2.8%). SARS-CoV-2 has led to various neuroimaging abnormalities which can be categorised by neuroanatomical localisation of lesions and their main probable underlying pathogenesis. Cranial nerve and spinal root abnormalities were cranial neuritis and polyradiculitis. Parenchymal abnormalities fell into four groups of: (a) thrombosis disorders, namely ischaemic stroke and sinus venous thrombosis; (b) endothelial dysfunction and damage disorders manifested as various types of intracranial haemorrhage and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome; (c) hypoxia/hypoperfusion disorders of leukoencephalopathy and watershed infarction; and (d) inflammatory disorders encompassing demyelinating disorders, encephalitis, vasculitis-like disorders, vasculopathy and cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum. Leptomeninges disorders included meningitis. Ischaemic stroke was the most frequent abnormality in these studies. CONCLUSION: The review study suggests that an anatomical approach to the classification of heterogeneous neuroimaging findings in patients with SARS-CoV-2 and neurological manifestations would lend itself well for use by practitioners in diagnosis and treatment planning.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and childbirth at an early age are associated with potential risks and complications for adolescent mothers. Health practices are behaviors that can positively affect maternal and fetal health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of self-care counseling on health practices (main outcome), attitudes towards motherhood and pregnancy, and pregnancy symptoms (secondary outcomes) in adolescent pregnant women. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 54 adolescent pregnant women admitted to the health centers of Bukan, Iran in 2020 were enrolled. Using randomized block design, the participants were randomly assigned to the counseling (n=27) and control (n=27) groups. Those in the intervention group attended 6 self-care group counseling sessions. The Health Practices Questionnaire-II (HPQ-II), Attitudes towards Motherhood and Pregnancy Questionnaire (PRE-MAMA), and Pregnancy Symptoms Inventory (PSI) were completed before and 4 weeks after the intervention. RESULTS: Based on the results of ANCOVA with controlled baseline values, after the intervention the mean health practices score of the participants in the intervention group was significantly higher than those in the control group (adjusted mean difference (AMD): 36.34; 95% CI: 34.69 to 37.98; P<0.001). The mean attitude towards motherhood score of the participants in the intervention group was significantly higher than those in the control group (AMD: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.06 to 1.96; P= 0.038). However, the mean pregnancy symptoms score of the participants in the intervention group was partially lower than those in the control group (AMD: -1.37; 95% CI: -4.32 to 1.58; P= 0.354). CONCLUSION: Self-care counseling sessions can improve the health practices of adolescent pregnant women and enhance their attitudes towards maternal role and pregnancy. Therefore, planners are recommended to organize self-care counseling programs for all pregnant women, especially for adolescent pregnant women.
