Mangrove ecosystems are essential to society, providing ecological and economic services, and play a crucial role in the geochemical land-ocean interface as a sink for potentially toxic metals. This study assessed metals (Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn) and arsenic in sediments from three mangrove zones (Tidal Flat, Rhizophora mangle L. and Avicennia schaueriana Stapf & Leechman ex Moldenke forests) during two seasons: spring of 2015 and autumn of 2016, with the latter being a severe drought year. Overall results suggest that Fe/Mn oxyhydroxides and clay minerals control the distribution of metal and arsenic in the Tidal Flat zone. In the mangrove forest however, sulfur and organic matter dominate complexation, with Fe mainly present as insoluble sulfide, and As, Cd, Cu and Zn as metal sulfides or organometallic complexes. In the autumn of 2016, all elements except Cd and Pb had lower concentrations compared to the spring of 2015. Cd and Pb were probably transferred from sources other than mangrove sediments, due to increased saline water intrusion, a consequence of reduced riverine flow, and precipitated in the Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia schaueriana mangrove forests. This increase of Cd and Pb in the mangrove forest suggests potential storage of metal contaminants in the organic rich areas, a change in availability and potential toxicity to fauna and flora and a need for regulatory responses to sediment quality. These results indicate a change in sediment metal contaminant dynamics with the increasing occurrence of extreme weather events - an increased risk to the ecosystem.

The pathogenicity of Xylella fastidiosa is associated with its ability to colonize the xylem of host plants. Expression of genes contributing to xylem colonization are suppressed, while those necessary for insect vector acquisition are increased with increasing concentrations of diffusible signal factor (DSF), whose production is dependent on RpfF. We previously demonstrated that transgenic citrus plants ectopically expressing rpfF from a citrus strain of X. fastidiosa subsp. pauca exhibited less susceptibility to Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, another pathogen whose virulence is modulated by DSF accumulation. Here, we demonstrate that ectopic expression of rpfF in both transgenic tobacco and sweet orange also confers a reduction in disease severity incited by X. fastidiosa and reduces its colonization of those plants. Decreased disease severity in the transgenic plants was generally associated with increased expression of genes conferring adhesiveness to the pathogen and decreased expression of genes necessary for active motility, accounting for the reduced population sizes achieved in the plants, apparently by limiting pathogen dispersal through the plant. Plant-derived DSF signal molecules in a host plant can, therefore, be exploited to interfere with more than one pathogen whose virulence is controlled by DSF signaling.

Potential sex and/or gametogenic stage differences in the metabolism of chlorophyll-a and carotenoids in the brown mussel Perna perna of southern Brazil were studied using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Carotenoids derived directly from diet (phytoplankton) were fucoxanthin plus diatoxanthin (diatoms), alloxanthin (cryptophytes) and zeaxanthin (mainly cyanobacteria). Females accumulated carotenoid-diols and epoxides (~3-4 mg/g-dry wt.) while males had much lower concentrations (~0.7 mg/g-dry wt.). An antioxidant/free radical scavenging role is proposed for carotenoids in females. Mean ratios of chlorophyll plus derivatives (Chlns-a) to carotenoids for male and female P. perna were 50:1 and 4:1, respectively. The higher ratio in males relates to both higher carotenoid contents in females plus higher total Chlns-a in males (~22 mg/g-dry wt.), relative to the females (~4 mg/g-dry wt.). Chlorophyll-a metabolism in both sexes followed two distinct pathways. First, cyclization of pyropheophorbide-a gave 13(2), 17(3)-cyclopheophorbide-a-enol (CPPaE) which was further oxidized to hydroxy-chlorophyllone. Second, chlorophyll-a derivatives retaining the 13(2)-carbomethoxy moiety were oxidized to purpurin-18 which was hydrolyzed to chlorin-p(6). In both cases, metabolism of dietary chlorophyll-a was oxidative and derivatives could either serve as antioxidants or merely be the results of non-specific digestive processes.

In a comparative study of two commercial baby hamster kidney rabies vaccines produced in Brazil, the authors were able to demonstrate the following: a) both vaccines provoked a high level of antibody response and protection against challenge in cattle b) in primary vaccination, at least, the addition of avridine (a synthetic lipoidal amine) enhances the immune response in terms of the level and persistence of antibody c) over 90% of cattle vaccinated with either vaccine were protected against experimental challenge one year after revaccination, and the antibody response profile indicated that these vaccines were capable of maintaining antibody titres above protective levels for more than two years after revaccination. On the basis of these results, the authors recommend optional revaccination of young animals (i.e. "primo-vaccinates") at six months of age. Thereafter, annual revaccination should be sufficient to ensure high levels of antibody between vaccination cycles.
