Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy associated with biphasic calcium phosphate on calvaria critical defects in rats. Methods: Forty-eight (90 days old) adult male rats (Rattus norvegicus, Albinus variation, Wistar) received critical defects of 5 mm in diameter, which were made on their skull, and they were randomly assigned into the following groups: C-blood clot, B-biphasic calcium phosphate, L-photobiomodulation therapy, and B + L-biphasic calcium phosphate + photobiomodulation therapy. A low-level a gallium aluminum arsenide (GaAlAs) laser was applied in a single dose during surgery, in a wavelength of 660 nm and total energy density of 45 J/cm2. On 30th and 60th days, the animals from each group were euthanized. Histological and histomorphometric analyses were performed. Results:In 30 days, almost all specimens (C, L, B and B + L) showed bone neoformation areas in regions near the borders of the surgical defect. In 60 days, in many specimens (C, L, B, B + L), it was possible to see a narrow neoformed bone structure along almost the whole extension of the surgical defect, though it was thinner than the original calvary bone. Data were recorded as mean ± standard deviation, and after normality was tested, a suitable statistical test was applied (α = 5%). On day 60, there was a statistically significant difference when comparing the proportion of neoformation area between group L (0.52%±0.13) and group B+L (0.20%±0.08). Group L showed a difference compared with all the groups when we compared the remaining distance between the edges of neoformed bone (C×L, P=0.0431; B × L, P=0.0386; L×B+L, P=0.0352), demonstrating a great defect closure. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that although biphasic calcium phosphate exerts some osteogenic activity during bone repair, PBM therapy is not able to modulate this process.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Electrical stimulation (ES) has been used to treat chronic wound and other clinical applications, showing favorable results in wound closure. It was hypothesized that ES can present a positive effect on oral mucosa healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ES during the palatal mucosa early healing process in Swiss mice. METHODS: Ninety animals were divided into two groups: Control (C; n = 45), which received Sham ES applications, and Test (ES; n = 45), which received ES (100 µA; 9 kHz; 660 mVpp) once a day for 3 days. A full thickness wound was performed with a 1.5 mm diameter biopsy punch in the hard palate. Histologically, the following parameters were evaluated: palatal wound closure and epithelial and connective wound edge distance (EED and CED). Furthermore, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10 TNF-α, and VEGF cytokine levels were evaluated by multiplex assay. The percentage of collagen fibers was assessed using the polarization method and the Smad proteins using the immunofluorescence method. RESULTS: Palatal wound closure presented a significant reduction on day 5 in the ES group (p = 0.01). Additionally, both EED and CED were shorter for all time points in the ES group (p < 0.05), and the inflammatory markers IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and VEGF were reduced (p < 0.05). There were no differences in collagen fibers and phospho-Smad2 between the groups. CONCLUSION: ES had a positive effect on early palatal wound closure outcomes, as well as on inflammatory markers.

Frequently, the clinicians are addressed to decide between the preservation of Grade III furcation molar and the implant replacement, due to the increased access among the population to this therapy over the years and high success rate of the osseointegrated implants. This case series presents clinical and radiographic data collected from 10 patients who underwent 13 root amputations for the treatment of degree Grade III furcation in maxillary molars with follow-up until 16 years. The results showed improvements in probing depth, bleeding on probing, and radiographic aspects. The follow-up time indicates that root amputation is an effective long-term treatment solution, especially when the patient's local, systemic, or financial conditions make it difficult or impossible to implant placement.

The purpose of this case series is to describe a restorative and surgical approach to treat the combined defect (CD)-gingival recession associated with noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL)-through connective tissue graft in combination with partial resin composite filling, restoring the crown zone plus 1 mm of the NCCL. A total of 10 patients were included. Bleeding on probing, probing depth, relative gingival recession, clinical attachment level, CD height, and dentin hypersensitivity were measured. The treatment provided statistically significant gain in clinical attachment level and shallow probing depths. The percentage of the combined defect coverage was 70% ± 20.2%. It can be concluded that this treatment protocol, in the presence of a partial resin composite restoration, can be used successfully to treat CD.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal wound healing has been accelerated by different low-level laser therapy (LLLT) protocols. However, just a few studies have evaluated use of this therapy adjunctive to periodontal plastic surgery procedures. The present study shows 2-year results of a connective tissue graft (CTG) associated with LLLT in the treatment of gingival recession (GR) defects. METHODS: Forty patients presenting Miller Class I and II GRs were previously treated by CTG (control group; n = 20) or CTG + LLLT (test group; n = 20). A diode laser (aluminum-gallium-arsenide, 660 nm) was applied to test sites immediately after surgery and every other day for 14 days (total of eight applications). After a follow-up of 2 years, clinical and esthetic evaluations were performed in 36 patients. RESULTS: Mean percentage of root coverage was 93.43% for the test group and 92.32% for the control group (P = 0.55). Complete root coverage was 79% (n = 15) for the test group and 76% (n = 13) for the control group (n = 13) (P = 0.80). Both groups showed esthetics maintenance after 2 years. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, results indicate that LLLT showed no additional benefit in the long term when associated with a CTG in the treatment of Miller Class I and II GRs.
