RESUMO
Smokeless tobacco (SLT) causes the excessive production of reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative damage and carcinogenesis. The present study aimed to evaluate the levels of biomarkers, such as glutathione (GSH) in the blood, as well as serum albumin and total protein levels in SLT users with oral precancerous and cancerous lesions. A cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted on 240 patients aged 30-60 years, divided into four groups with 60 patients in each group as follows: Group 1, control group, non-tobacco users; group 2, 60 subjects with a history of SLT use and no oral lesions; group 3, SLT users with precancerous oral lesions; and group 4, SLT users with cancerous lesions. GSH levels in the blood, serum albumin levels and total protein levels were evaluated in all groups. ANOVA and Tukey's test post hoc were used to compare the levels of the biomarkers in all groups. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the reliability of the biomarkers, and regression analysis was used to determine the associations between the variables. The use of SLT was predominantly observed in males. The mean GSH and serum albumin levels were lowest in group 4 and highest in the control group (P<0.001). The total serum protein levels were higher in group 4 than in group 3. On the whole, as demonstrated herein, GSH and serum albumin were reliable biomarkers, whereas total protein was a weak biomarker. GSH and serum albumin levels may thus be efficiently used for the early diagnosis and prognosis of oral malignancies in SLT users.
RESUMO
INTRODUCTION: The consumption of smokeless tobacco (SLT) and related products has become an epidemic worldwide, especially among young people, as they come into direct contact with the tissues of the oral cavity. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study was conducted to compare the status of dentition and periodontal health of teeth associated with the unilateral SLT pouch keratosis with the unaffected contralateral side. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 96 SLT users from north Maharashtra, India, with unilateral SLT pouch keratosis were studied. Demographic data, past and present SLT use history, features of SLT pouch keratosis, modified community periodontal index, dentition status index, and loss of tooth attachment were recorded. Data were collected and subjected to statistical analysis using the unpaired t-test and chi-square test. RESULTS: The results of the present study showed a significant difference (p≤0.05) in gingival bleeding, pocket depth, and attachment loss in teeth associated with smokeless tobacco keratosis (STK) compared to teeth at the contralateral sides of the arch. The duration of tobacco use had a significant effect on the severity of loss of attachment at SLT pouch keratosis sides. There was a significant difference (p≤0.05) in the mean scores of the sound crown, carious crown, and coronal caries status between the SLT pouch keratosis side and the contralateral side. CONCLUSION: The results of the study revealed that significant gingival bleeding, gingival recession, and attachment loss in the teeth are associated with SLT pouch keratosis compared with the teeth on the contralateral side without the lesion.
RESUMO
Mucormycosis is one of the most lethal and rapidly spreading fungal infection which is caused by fungus of the order Mucorales. The swiftness of spreading and high mortality rate that characterize mucormycosis cases added more burden to the enormous challenge brought by the Covid-19 pandemic globally. The aim of this article is to identify and discuss mucormycosis and review the literature related to its diagnosis and management. A total of 15 mucormycosis cases with a history of Covid-19 infection were identified in the Department of Dentistry of Shri B M Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Centre BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura, India. The duration of the study was between April 1st and mid-September 2021. Nasal swab and tissue samples from oral and maxillofacial region were collected. Blood investigations, RT-PCR and HbA1c tests and radiography revealed changes in the trabecular pattern and bone loss associated with periodontal inflammation. Mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection. Hence, dental and other clinical professionals must be aware of this possible fatal complication, so as to avoid an unfavorable outcome in clinical practice.
RESUMO
Introduction Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to reducing the morbidity of patients with enteric fever/typhoid fever. Among the available diagnostic tests, the blood culture is considered a gold standard. However, in most of the developing and resource-limited settings, the diagnosis is made utilizing the traditional Widal test and rapid immunochromatographic test (ICT). This study was aimed to compare the diagnostic value and efficacy of ICT and traditional Widal test in the diagnosis of typhoid fever. Methods A prospective study was conducted, and 40 patients were included in the study. The Widal test and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi IgM/IgG immunochromatographic test were performed for all the patients. The Widal is a tube agglutination test, and the rapid ICT utilizes the principle of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All the samples were also tested for the presence of antibodies (IgG and IgM) against the S. enterica serovar Typhi and the titers against 'O' and 'H' antigens of S. enterica serovar Typhi. An antibody titer of 1:80 or more against the 'O' and 'H' antigen was considered positive. Results In the ICT, 24 samples (60%) tested positive for the IgM antibodies, and only 15 samples tested positive and for IgG antibodies. In the Widal test, 27 samples (67.6%) returned positive for antibodies against the S. enterica serovar Typhi 'O' antigen. The sensitivity (90% vs 72.73%), specificity (81.25% vs 64%), and accuracy (82.12% vs 64.87%) for the Widal test were found to be more when compared to the ICT. Conclusion The results indicate that the traditional Widal agglutination test is superior to the rapid ICT in the diagnosis of enteric fever. However, both these tests cannot be considered as gold standards for the diagnosis owing to their low positive predictive values.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The study of lip-print pattern (cheiloscopy) is a scientific method for personal identification and plays a major role in forensic and criminal investigations. OBJECTIVE: To compare the lip print patterns in Kerala and Maharashtra population and correlate between ABO blood groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred subjects, 100 from Maharashtra and 100 from Kerala were considered for the study. Lip prints were recorded, analyzed according to Tsuchihashi classification. The lip print patterns were compared in the two populations, correlated in ABO blood groups. The data obtained was statistically analyzed with SPSS software using chi-square test. RESULTS: In our study, predominant lip print pattern observed in Kerala population was type IV (53%) and Maharashtra population was type II (42%). The difference between the two population was statistically significant (p<0.001). Subjects with A+ and O- blood groups had type II lip print predominance. Subjects with B+, AB+ and O+ blood groups had type IV predominance. The lip print patterns do not show any correlation in ABO blood groups. CONCLUSION: Lip prints are unique to each individual and are different even in two persons. Lip print patterns were different in the two sub populations studied, and they showed no correlation in ABO blood groups.
