Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) for rectal cancer by comparing the local control in patients with and without pathological lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM). Methods: We included 189 patients with rectal cancer who underwent total mesorectal excision and LLND at 13 institutions between 2017 and 2019. Patients with and without pathological LLNM were defined as the pLLNM (+) and (-) groups, respectively. Propensity score-matching helped to balance the basic characteristics of both groups. The incidences of local recurrence (LR) and lateral lymph node recurrence (LLNR) were compared between the groups. Results: In the entire cohort, 39 of the 189 patients had pathological LLNM. The 3-year LR and LLNR rates were 18.3% and 4.0% (p = 0.01) and 7.7% and 3.3% (p = 0.22) in the pLLNM (+) and (-) groups, respectively. After propensity score matching, the data from 62 patients were analyzed. No significant differences in LR or LLNR were observed between both groups. The 3-year LR and LLNR rates were 16.4% and 9.8% (p = 0.46) and 9.7% and 9.8% (p = 0.99) in the pLLNM (+) and (-) groups, respectively. Conclusion: LLND would lead to comparable local control in the pLLNM (+) and (-) groups if the clinicopathological characteristics except for LLNM are similar.

Perovskite based on cesium bismuth bromide offers a compelling, non-toxic alternative to lead-containing counterparts in optoelectronic applications. However, its widespread usage is hindered by its wide bandgap. This study investigates a significant bandgap tunability achieved by introducing Fe doping into the inorganic, lead-free, non-toxic, and stable Cs3Bi2Br9 perovskite at varying concentrations. The materials were synthesized using a facile method, with the aim of tuning the optoelectronic properties of the perovskite materials. Characterization through techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-vis spectroscopy was conducted to elucidate the transformation mechanism of the doping materials. The substitution process results in a significant change in the bandgap energy, transforming from the pristine Cs3Bi2Br9 with a bandgap of 2.54 eV to 1.78 eV upon 70% Fe doping. The addition of 50% Fe in Cs3Bi2Br9 leads to the formation of the orthorhombic structure in Cs2(Bi,Fe)Br5 perovskite, while complete Fe alloying at 100% results in the phase formation of CsFeBr4 perovskite. Our findings on regulation of bandgap energy and crystal structure through B site substitution hold significant promise for applications in optoelectronics.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the localization of chondroitin sulfate (CS), a primary extracellular matrix component, in the stromal region of endometrial carcinoma (EC). METHODS: Immunostaining was performed on 26 endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (EEC) samples of different grades and 10 endometrial serous carcinoma (ESC) samples to evaluate CS localization. This was further confirmed by Alcian Blue (AB) staining as well. RESULTS: In the G1-EEC samples, CS showed reactivity with fibrovascular stroma, supporting closely packed glandular crowding and papillary structures. As the grade increased, the original interstitial structure was re-established, and the localization of CS in the perigulandular region decreased. In the ESC samples, the thick fibrous strands supporting the papillary architecture showed reactivity with CS; however, the delicate stromal region branching into the narrow region showed poor reactivity. The AB staining results showed similar characteristics to the immunostaining ones. CONCLUSIONS: The characteristic localization of CS in various EC types was elucidated. The present study provides new information on endometrial stromal assessment.

Background and Objective: In endometrial cytology, differentiating endometrial glandular stromal breakdown (EGBD) from endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (G1-EEC) is often difficult. In this study, we provided a new focus on chondroitin sulfate (CS), a major substrate component of the endometrial stroma, and assessed the diagnostic utility of Alcian Blue (AB) staining in the differential diagnosis in liquid-based cytological (LBC) samples. Materials and Methods: LBC specimens from 19 patients with a proliferative endometrium, 36 with EGBD, and 30 with G1-EEC who underwent endometrial cytology were stained with AB (pH 1.0), and their reactivity was observed. In addition, immunocytochemical staining of CS and CD31 was performed for five cases each to evaluate their interrelationship with blood vessels. Results: Regarding the 30 G1-EEC cases, at least one of the three representative staining patterns was observed by AB staining: dot-like, microtubular, and finely branched linear patterns. Moreover, the inner portion of the tubular material observed by AB staining expressed CD31. Conversely, in the 36 EGBD cases, only five metaplastic clusters with irregular protrusions and condensed stromal clusters (CSCs) showed a dot-like positive pattern, and background CSCs did not show reactivity to AB staining in any of the cases. Furthermore, the vascular structure expressing CD31 in cell clusters was also unclear. Conclusions: We demonstrated that AB staining shows different staining patterns in G1-EEC and EGBD, reflecting their different tissue structures. Our data provide new insights into endometrial cell diagnosis changes and demonstrate that AB staining is a potential new diagnostic aid tool for the differentiation of G1-EEC from EGBD.

Aims: The present study aimed to investigate whether the presence of mitoses in hyperchromatic crowded groups (HCGs) in cervical cytological specimens can serve as cytological criteria for high-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions (HSILs). Methods and Material: Various parameters were examined, including the frequency of mitotic figures per high power field (HPF) in Pap, hematoxylin eosin (HE) samples, and PHH3 immunocytochemical (ICC) and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses. Results: In the Pap and PHH3-ICC samples, the number of mitotic figures observed in HCGs was significantly higher in HSIL (P < 0.001) compared to other groups. Furthermore, the frequency of observing two or more mitoses was significantly higher in HSIL (Pap: P = 0.002, PHH3-ICC: P < 0.001) than in low-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions (LSILs). Moreover, a comparison between Pap samples and PHH3-ICC showed that the frequency of two or more mitoses was significantly higher in the PHH3-ICC analysis of HSIL (P = 0.042). Regarding HE and PHH3-IHC samples, counting the number of mitoses in the lower and middle/upper layers of the squamous epithelial layer revealed that HSIL had a significantly higher value (HE: P = 0.0089, PHH3-IHC: P = 0.0002) than LSIL in the middle/upper layers. Conclusions: Hence, the presence of two or more mitotic figures in HCGs per HPF in cervical cytology indicates a suspicion of HSIL. The detection of mitoses in PHH3-ICC samples is more sensitive and easier to observe than in Pap samples, making it a valuable mitotic marker.

The application of carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns as thermoelectric materials for harvesting energy from low-grade waste heat including that generated by the human body, is attracting considerable attention. However, the lack of efficient n-type CNT yarns hinders their practical implementation in thermoelectric devices. This study reports efficient n-doping of CNT yarns, employing 4-(1, 3-dimethyl-2, 3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole-2-yl) phenyl) dimethylamine (N-DMBI) in alternative to conventional n-dopants, with o-dichlorobenzene emerging as the optimal solvent. The small molecular size of N-DMBI enables highly efficient doping within a remarkably short duration (10 s) while ensuring prolonged stability in air and at high temperature (150 °C). Furthermore, Joule annealing of the yarns significantly improves the n-doping efficiency. Consequently, thermoelectric power factors (PFs) of 2800, 2390, and 1534 µW m-1 K-2 are achieved at 200, 150, and 30 °C, respectively. The intercalation of N-DMBI molecules significantly suppresses the thermal conductivity, resulting in the high figure of merit (ZT) of 1.69×10-2 at 100 °C. Additionally, a π-type thermoelectric module is successfully demonstrated incorporating both p- and n-doped CNT yarns. This study offers an efficient doping strategy for achieving CNT yarns with high thermoelectric performance, contributing to the realization of lightweight and mechanically flexible CNT-based thermoelectric devices.

Sarcopenia is a prognostic factor for patients with colorectal cancer and is commonly seen in elderly patients. The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate the impact of preoperative sarcopenia on the short- and long-term outcomes of curative surgery for treating colorectal cancer in elderly patients. Between 2016 and 2020, patients aged ≥80 years with colorectal cancer were investigated. The total muscle cross-sectional area was calculated using computed tomography imaging at the mid-3rd lumbar vertebra. Elder sarcopenia was identified using sex-specific cut-offs. Out of 106 elderly colorectal cancer patients, 27 patients were diagnosed with elder sarcopenia. Patients with elder sarcopenia had a reduced body mass index (19.7±2.5 vs. 22.5±2.9 kg/m2; P<0.01), an advanced pN stage (P<0.01) and an advanced stage (stage 3) (P=0.029). Elder sarcopenia had a negative impact on relapse-free survival (3-year, 78.4 vs. 91.1%; P=0.049) and overall survival (3-year, 73.0 vs. 93.9%; P=0.022). Propensity score-matched analysis was performed, matching 27 patients in each group to remove selection bias, which demonstrated elder sarcopenia had a negative impact on overall survival (3-year, 73.0 vs. 100%; P<0.01). Overall, elder sarcopenia was prevalent in 25% of elderly patients with colorectal cancer that received curative surgery, and it was a poor prognostic indicator in this patient population.

SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) is important for sexual differentiation, chondrogenic differentiation, and cell proliferation in cancer. It acts as a target molecule of microRNA (miR)-138 in various tumors and is associated with tumor development and growth. In this study, we analyzed the functions of miR-138 and SOX9 in urothelial carcinoma. SOX9 was highly expressed in invasive urothelial carcinoma tissues. miR-138 precursor transfection of T24 and UMUC2 cells significantly decreased SOX9 expression, indicating that SOX9 is a miR-138 target in urothelial carcinoma. Moreover, miR-138 precursor or SOX9 small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection decreased the proliferation of urothelial carcinoma cell lines. To further confirm that miR-138-SOX9 signaling is involved in cell proliferation and invasion, urothelial carcinoma cells were transfected with the miR-138 precursor or SOX9 siRNA. This transfection reduced the proliferation and invasion of cells via the promotion of autophagy and apoptosis and G0/G1 cell cycle arrest. These results suggest that miR-138-SOX9 signaling modulates the growth and invasive potential of urothelial carcinoma cells.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have garnered attention as biomarkers for therapeutic response and prognosis in malignant neoplasms. Nonetheless, existing literature predominantly relies on surrogate markers of tumor cells or focuses on single-cell CTC, failing to adequately address the challenge of detecting cluster-forming CTCs, which bear considerable prognostic implications. This prospective study aims to validate the efficacy of a novel filtration membrane, namely Soft Micro Pore Filter (S-MPF®), for rare cell recovery in detecting CTCs through the analysis of clinical samples. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with confirmed lung cancer or highly suspected lung cancer based on specific criteria (solid tumor size >2.0 cm, serum carcinoembryonic level >7.5 ng/ml, maximum standard uptake value derived from fluorodeoxyglucose-position emission tomography >2.9) were included in the study. CTCs were extracted from preoperative peripheral arterial blood samples using S-MPF®, and the validity of the filtration system was positively verified. RESULTS: Out of the 25 enrolled patients, 23 had lung cancer. CTC positivity was observed in 17 cases (73.9%), whereas cluster CTC positivity was observed in 16 cases (69.6%), with a median count of two clusters. Single CTC positivity was observed in 11 cases (52.1%), with a median count of one cell. CONCLUSION: The utilization of the newly developed S-MPF® filtration membrane exhibited a high rate of CTC identification, demonstrating its suitability for clinical applications.

In this study, we investigated the impact of benzophenone (BP), a small molecule additive, on the performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Specifically, we introduced BP into the perovskite precursor solution of FAPbI3 to fabricate PSCs with an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/BP:FAPbI3/PCBM/C60/PCB/Ag architecture. The incorporation of BP with an optimum concentration of 2 mg mL-1 significantly enhanced the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted PSC from 13.12 to 18.84% with negligible hysteresis. Notably, the BP-based PSCs retained â¼90% of their initial PCE after being stored in ambient air with 30% relative humidity at 25 °C for 700 h. In contrast, control devices showed rapid degradation, retaining only 30% of their initial value within 300 h under the same conditions. We attributed the superior performance and stability of the BP-based PSCs to the grain boundary passivation of the perovskite film. The improvement was mainly attributed to the intermolecular interaction between the O-donor Lewis base BP material and both Pb2+ and FA+ in FAPbI3. This effectively suppresses trap-assisted recombination and promotes the conversion of the δ-phase to photoactive and stable α-phase FAPbI3. Overall, our findings suggest that BP is a promising additive for improving the performance and stability of inverted PSCs.

Molnupiravir (MOV) and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (NMV/r) are efficacious oral antiviral agents for patients with the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19). However, little is known about their effectiveness in older adults and those at high risk of disease progression. This retrospective single-center observational study assessed and compared the outcomes of COVID-19 treated with MOV and NMV/r in a real-world community setting. We included patients with confirmed COVID-19 combined with one or more risk factors for disease progression from June to October 2022. Of 283 patients, 79.9% received MOV and 20.1% NMV/r. The mean patient age was 71.7 years, 56.5% were men, and 71.7% had received ≥3 doses of vaccine. COVID-19-related hospitalization (2.8% and 3.5%, respectively; p = 0.978) or death (0.4% and 3.5%, respectively; p = 0.104) did not differ significantly between the MOV and NMV/r groups. The incidence of adverse events was 2.7% and 5.3%, and the incidence of treatment discontinuation was 2.7% and 5.3% in the MOV and NMV/r groups, respectively. The real-world effectiveness of MOV and NMV/r was similar among older adults and those at high risk of disease progression. The incidence of hospitalization or death was low.

BACKGROUND: In addition to potent agonist properties for sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptors, intracellularly, S1P is an intermediate in metabolic conversion pathway from sphingolipids to glycerolysophospholipids (glyceroLPLs). We hypothesized that this S1P metabolism and its products might possess some novel roles in the pathogenesis of cancer, where S1P lyase (SPL) is a key enzyme. METHODS: The mRNA levels of sphingolipid-related and other cancer-related factors were measured in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), colorectal cancer, and esophageal cancer patients' tumours and in their adjacent non-tumour tissues. Phospholipids (PL) and glyceroLPLs were measured by using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In-vitro experiments were performed in Colon 26 cell line with modulation of the SPL and GPR55 expressions. Xenograft model was used for determination of the cancer progression and for pharmacological influence. RESULTS: Besides high SPL levels in human HCC and colon cancer, SPL levels were specifically and positively linked with levels of glyceroLPLs, including lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI). Overexpression of SPL in Colon 26 cells resulted in elevated levels of LPI and lysophosphatidylglycerol (LPG), which are agonists of GPR55. SPL overexpression-enhanced cell proliferation was inhibited by GPR55 silencing. Conversely, inhibition of SPL led to the opposite outcome and reversed by adding LPI, LPG, and metabolites generated during S1P degradation, which is regulated by SPL. The xenograft model results suggested the contribution of SPL and glyceroLPLs to tumour progression depending on levels of SPL and GPR55. Moreover, the pharmacological inhibition of SPL prevented the progression of cancer. The underlying mechanisms for the SPL-mediated cancer progression are the activation of p38 and mitochondrial function through the LPI, LPG-GPR55 axis and the suppression of autophagy in a GPR55-independent manner. CONCLUSION: A new metabolic pathway has been proposed here in HCC and colon cancer, SPL converts S1P to glyceroLPLs, mainly to LPI and LPG, and facilitates cancer development.

Reconstruction of the mandible following hemimandibulectomy is difficult and complex. The appropriate approach to condylar reconstruction remains controversial. In this report, the authors propose the concept of "short ramus reconstruction" after hemimandibulectomy. In this technique, a neocondyle is constructed around the base of the condyle to avoid trismus and ankylosis. Four patients underwent short condylar reconstruction using fibula free flaps. Post-surgery, no patient developed trismus or ankylosis. Centric occlusion, good masticatory function, and favourable aesthetic outcomes were achieved in all cases. "Short ramus reconstruction" is a simple and convenient method to reconstruct the mandible following hemimandibulectomy.

BACKGROUND: Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder (Pub) is rare and presents with clinical symptoms caused by catecholamine production and release. The typical symptoms of Pub are hypertension, macroscopic hematuria, and a hypertensive crisis during micturition. The average size of detected Pubs is approximately 3 cm. Herein, we report a case of a large Pub in which the symptoms were masked by oral medication, precise preoperative diagnosis was difficult, and intraoperative confirmation of tumoral adhesion to the rectum resulted in hypertensive attacks during surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old Japanese male with a history of hypertension and arrhythmia controlled with oral medication presented with a large tumor in the pelvic region, detected on examination for weight loss, with no clinical symptoms. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor measuring 77 mm in diameter in the posterior wall of the urinary bladder. The border with the rectum was unclear, and the tumor showed heterogeneous enhancement in the solid part with an enhancing hypodense lesion. Cystoscopy revealed compression of the bladder trigone by external masses; however, no tumor was visible in the lumen. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration revealed CD34-positive spindle-shaped cells in the fibrous tissue, suggestive of a mesenchymal neoplasm. The tumor was suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and surgery was performed. After laparotomy, we suspected that the tumor had invaded the rectum, and total cystectomy and anterior resection of the rectum were performed. Histologically, the tumor cells had granular or clear amphophilic cytoplasm with an oval nucleus and nests of cells delimited by connective tissue and vascular septations. Immunohistochemically, the tumor was positive for chromogranin A, CD56, and synaptophysin, and a diagnosis of paraganglioma of the urinary bladder was confirmed. There was no tumor recurrence at the 7-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the importance of careful examination of pelvic tumors, including endocrine testing, for detecting paraganglioma of the urinary bladder in patients with a history of hypertension or arrhythmia.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare and highly lethal tumor that arises from mesothelial tissue on the surface of the chest and abdominal cavity. Cytological examination of body fluids, including pleural fluid and ascites, is essential for the differentiation of malignant mesothelioma from other carcinomas, such as lung and gastrointestinal carcinomas and metastatic tumors. To evaluate the effectiveness of cell block preparation procedures, which are used for immunocytochemical staining and genetic panel analysis of tumor-specific gene mutations, we used various fixatives. We also evaluated the effects of immunostaining, and the quality of nucleic acids for genetic analysis. METHODS: Cell blocks were prepared using the malignant mesothelioma cell lines MESO4 and H226 and non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line HCC78. The cells were fixed using 10% neutral buffered formalin and four different fixatives for liquid cytology. Fixed cells were formed into cell clusters using sodium alginate or centrifugation, and paraffin-embedded cell blocks were prepared. RESULTS: Cell blocks were morphologically evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin and immunocytological staining, and the nucleic acid quality was evaluated by DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, and next-generation sequence analysis. D2-40 and WT1 staining differed depending on the fixation solution and the cell cluster formation method; however, the degree of nucleic acid degradation was not impaired by any method. CONCLUSION: Although the morphological evaluation of cytology specimens is affected by the method of cell block preparation, it is still useful for nucleic acid extraction and gene panel analysis, as long as there are sufficient amounts of tumor cells.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites with novel functionalities and structural diversity are a perfect platform for emerging optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells. Here, we demonstrate that excess concentration of Cesium bromide (CsBr) is key to the formation of easily exfoliated 2D Cs2 Cu(Cl/Br)4 perovskite crystal. Furthermore, by employing this trick to 2D perovskite MA2 Cu(Cl/Br)4 (MA=methylammonium), we achieve a phase-pure easily exfoliated 2D mixed-cation (MA/Cs)2 Cu(Cl/Br)4 perovskite crystal, which exhibits reduced bandgap (1.53â eV) with ferromagnetic behavior and photovoltaic property. The resultant mixed-cation structured device reveals enhanced efficiency compared to all MA and all Cs counterparts. These findings demonstrate the importance of cation-engineering in developing innovative materials with novel properties.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit extremely high nanoscopic thermal/electrical transport and mechanical properties. However, the macroscopic properties of assembled CNTs are significantly lower than those of CNTs because of the boundary structure between the CNTs. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the relationship between the nanoscopic boundary structure in CNTs and the macroscopic properties of the assembled CNTs. Previous studies have shown that the nanoscopic phonon transport and macroscopic thermal transport in CNTs are improved by Joule annealing because of the improved boundary Van-der-Waals interactions between CNTs via the graphitization of amorphous carbon. In this study, we investigate the mechanical strength and thermal/electrical transport properties of CNT yarns with and without Joule annealing at various temperatures, analyzing the phenomena occurring at the boundaries of CNTs. The obtained experimental and theoretical results connect the nanoscopic boundary interaction of CNTs in CNT yarns and the macroscopic mechanical and transport properties of CNT yarns.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the causes of disruption of the three-dimensional architecture of endometrial glands prepared using BD SurePath™ liquid-based cytology (SP-LBC) reagents. One sample preparation method for endometrial cytology is presented in which this three-dimensional architecture can be retained. METHODS: SP-LBC specimens were prepared by the following three methods: (1) using the BD PrepMateTM (PrepMate) System after cellular fixation for 1-6 h (method A); (2) without using the PrepMate System after cellular fixation for 1-6 h (method B); and (3) using the PrepMate System after cellular fixation for at least 18 h (method C). Size and numbers of endometrial cell clusters and numbers of solitary scattered cells were then evaluated. RESULTS: Significantly higher numbers of cell clusters with a major axis of 200 µm or more were yielded by method C (71.3 ± 57.2) than methods A (9.3 ± 5.9, P < 0.001) or B (44.3 ± 28.8, P < 0.05). Method B yielded significantly higher numbers of cell clusters than method A (P < 0.001). Method A (132.2 ± 107.7, p < 0.001) yielded significantly higher numbers of solitary scattered cells than methods B (29.1 ± 14.8) and C (35.7 ± 23.3). No significant difference in solitary cell numbers was found between methods B and C. CONCLUSIONS: Retention of endometrial glandular architecture is rendered possible by allowing sample fixation times of 18 h or more when preparing specimens using the PrepMate System.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and handsewn anastomosis for ulcerative colitis requires pulling down of the ileal pouch into the pelvis, which can be technically challenging. We examined risk factors for the pouch not reaching the anus. METHODS: Clinical records of 62 consecutive patients who were scheduled to undergo RPC with handsewn anastomosis at the University of Tokyo Hospital during 1989-2019 were reviewed. Risk factors for non-reaching were analyzed in patients in whom hand sewing was abandoned for stapled anastomosis because of nonreaching. Risk factors for non-reaching in laparoscopic RPC were separately analyzed. Anatomical indicators obtained from presurgical computed tomography (CT) were also evaluated. RESULTS: Thirty-seven of 62 cases underwent laparoscopic procedures. In 6 cases (9.7%), handsewn anastomosis was changed to stapled anastomosis because of non-reaching. Male sex and a laparoscopic approach were independent risk factors of non-reaching. Distance between the terminal of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) ileal branch and the anus > 11 cm was a risk factor for non-reaching. CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic RPC with handsewn anastomosis may limit extension and induction of the ileal pouch into the anus. Preoperative CT measurement from the terminal SMA to the anus may be useful for predicting non-reaching.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic utility of CD10 in the differential diagnosis of grade 1-endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (G1-EEC) and the metaplastic changes associated with the endometrial glandular and stromal breakdown (EGBD) on liquid-based cytological (LBC) samples. METHODS: (1) The type and distribution of CD10-positive cells in EGBD and G1-EEC patients were evaluated. (2) Based on the results from (1), histological and cytological specimens were double-immunostained with CD31 and CD10 to confirm whether CD10-positive tubular-canalicular material found in (1) was represented by fine threads of endometrial-type fibrovascular stroma. (3) Based on the results from (2), additional immunostaining of histological specimens was performed for CD146 and αSMA as markers of perivascular cells. RESULTS: (1) CD10 positive cells showed two main patterns of expression: cytoplasmic immunoreactivity in the form of dense brown granules in EGBD and tubular-canalicular branching patterns in G1-EEC. (2) The tubular-canalicular material observed in cytological specimens of G1-EEC samples co-expressed CD10 and CD31, and was interpreted as representing fine threads of endometrial fibrovascular stroma in the corresponding histological samples. Conversely, metaplastic changes in EGBD cases, only a few CD31-positive signals were found inside the condensed stromal clusters with CD10-positive. (3) Cells surrounding the CD31-positive vascular endothelial cells expressed CD146 and αSMA; moreover, some of the thin CD10-positive fibrous stromal strands also co-expressed αSMA. CONCLUSIONS: CD10 is a very useful immunomarker for distinguishing between G1-EEC and the metaplastic changes of EGBD in LBC samples.
