RESUMO

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is caused by chronic deprivation of estrogen and other sex steroids during the postmenopausal period, which leads to changes in the vulvovaginal tissues. These changes cause bothersome symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, pruritus, dyspareunia, increased daytime urinary frequency, urgency and urinary incontinence, which have considerable negative effects on women's quality of life and sexual function. Recent studies have investigated a novel treatment approach for GSM. Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) rehabilitation, a low-cost conservative management with no side-effects, has been studied alone or in combination with other treatment modalities to reduce the signs and symptoms of GSM. The aim of this article is to discuss why PFM rehabilitation could be useful for women with GSM, how it may help improve signs and symptoms of GSM and when this treatment should be recommended.

RESUMO

Vascular malformations of the jaws can lead to disastrous complications, but there seems to be no consensus as to their treatment. The literature presents the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of these lesions, as well as the divergent views of the authors. Treatment by catheterization and embolization, with direct transosseous injection of cyanoacrylate, appears to be the least harmful and most permanent treatment in certain conditions, as evidenced by the case of this 9-year-old patient having a high-flow mandibular vascular malformation

RESUMO

Periodontal disease seems to be more prevalent in smokers than in nonsmokers. Studies have reported both increases and decreases in gingival blood flow due to smoking. Smoking does not increase the presence of the periodontopathogens Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Bacteroides intermedius. Both the chemotaxis and the phagocytic capacity of the polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) harvested from smokers are lower than with those harvested from nonsmokers. Furthermore, smokers have lower IgA, IgG, IgM, and suppressor CD8 lymphocytes levels than nonsmokers. These differences between smokers and nonsmokers should be taken into account by clinicians during periodontal examinations, therapy, and the healing process.

RESUMO

Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections and antimicrobial agents appear to offer great potential in their treatment and prevention. One such chemotherapeutic agent is minocycline. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on this antibiotic concerning in vitro and in vivo studies, its pharmacokinetics and secondary effects.
