RESUMO

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an illness that was sudden, unexpected, and global. Primarily a disease of the vascular endothelium, the virus threatens all of core systems, as well as behavioral and mental health, during the acute and long-term phases. Attention is now being given to the identification and care of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. This article presents the case of a "long hauler" who presented post-cardiac arrest with a history of COVID-19. Diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, his assessment, diagnosis, and care are discussed. In addition, the need for early identification and care for patients with post-COVID-19 symptoms is addressed.

RESUMO

Oral chronic graft-versus-host disease is a frequent complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, contributing to patient morbidity and mortality. Although an optimal treatment is not available, several systemic and topical or local therapies have shown efficacy in treating the disease. New therapies are being tested through clinical trials. This article examines the efficacy and safety of reported treatment modalities studied from 2006-2012. Nurses will encounter patients with oral chronic graft-versus-host disease suffering from pain, discomfort, and a decreased quality of life. Knowledge of new therapies found to be effective in managing these symptoms is imperative. Nurses play a key role in the assessment and management of this complex oral disease.

RESUMO

A 53-year-old man with a sudden onset of visual disturbances and a severe headache is transported to the emergency department, triaged as emergent, and seen immediately. His care is described on the basis of embolization and coiling in interventional radiology. Prioritization and nursing management postprocedure are discussed, and the importance of astute nursing interventions in the emergency department is presented.

RESUMO

The topic of family presence (FP) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation or invasive procedures has recently received attention and debate among healthcare professionals due to pioneering research in this field. Studies completed have included family perspectives on family presence, patients' feelings on family presence, and healthcare providers' views on family presence. Two key areas found to correlate with family presence acceptance among healthcare providers are education and experience. Senior nursing students in one baccalaureate program were introduced to this topic during a 3-hour class on death and dying. Comparisons between pretest and posttest scores revealed an increase in the acceptance of family presence as a priority in nursing care of the critically ill.

RESUMO

A major indicator of baccalaureate nursing program effectiveness is the pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examinations, Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) among first-time candidates. This article highlights the scope, instructional methods, and outcomes of the remediation program at Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies (GU-NHS). With implementation of the multifaceted program, the NCLEX-RN pass rate for first-time takers at GU-NHS has been consistently above the national mean among all first-time candidates. Although it is impossible to determine which strategy made the greatest contribution to the success of the program, the cumulative effect is impressive and indicates the students are prepared for the challenge of the examination and contemporary nursing practice.
