RESUMO

Selective fascicular involvement of the median nerve trunk above the elbow leading to anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) syndrome is a rare form of peripheral neuropathy. This condition has recently garnered increased attention within the medical community owing to advancements in imaging techniques and a growing number of reported cases. In this article, we explore the topographical anatomy of the median nerve trunk and the clinical features associated with AIN palsy. Our focus extends to unique manifestations captured through MRI and ultrasonography (US) studies, highlighting noteworthy findings, such as nerve fascicle swelling, incomplete constrictions, hourglass-like constrictions, and torsions, particularly in the posterior/posteromedial region of the median nerve. Surgical observations have further enhanced the understanding of this complex neuropathic condition. High-resolution MRI not only reveals denervation changes in the AIN and median nerve territories but also illuminates these alterations without the presence of compressing structures. The pivotal roles of high-resolution MRI and US in diagnosing this condition and guiding the formulation of an optimal treatment strategy are emphasized.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the comet tail artifact on ultrasonography can be used to reliably diagnose benign gallbladder diseases. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the clinical findings, imaging findings, preoperative ultrasonographic diagnoses, and pathological diagnoses of 150 patients with comet tail artifacts who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with pathologic confirmation. The extent of the involved lesion was classified as localized or diffuse, depending on the degree of involvement and the anatomical section of the gallbladder that was involved. This study evaluated the differences in clinical and imaging findings among pathologic diagnoses. RESULTS: All gallbladder lesions exhibiting the comet tail artifact on ultrasound examination were confirmed as benign gallbladder diseases after cholecystectomy, including 71 cases of adenomyomatosis (47.3%), 74 cases of chronic cholecystitis (49.3%), two cases of xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (1.3%), and three cases of cholesterolosis (2.0%); there were two cases of coexistent chronic cholecystitis and low-grade dysplasia. There were no statistically significant differences in any of the clinical and ultrasonographic findings, with the exception of gallstones (P=0.007), among the four diseases. There were no significant differences in the average length, thickness, or number of comet tail artifacts among the four diagnoses. No malignancies were detected in any of the 150 thickened gallbladder lesions. CONCLUSION: The ultrasonographic finding of the comet tail artifact in patients with thickened gallbladder lesions is associated with the presence of benign gallbladder diseases, and can be considered a reliable sign of benign gallbladder disease.

Nanoscale assemblies composed of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) can reveal interesting aspects about material properties beyond the functions of individual constituent NPs. This research direction may also represent current challenges in nanoscience toward practical applications. With respect to the assembling method, synthetic or biological nanostructures can be utilized to organize heterogeneous NPs in specific sites via chemical or physical interactions. However, those assembling methods often encounter uncontrollable particle aggregation or phase separation. In this study, we anticipated that the self-segregating properties of block copolymer micelles could be particularly useful for organizing heterogeneous NPs, because the presence of chemically distinct domains such as the core and the corona can facilitate the selective placement of constituent NPs in separate domains. Here, we simultaneously functionalized the core and the corona of micelles by Au NPs and Ag NPs, which exhibited plasmonic and catalytic functions, respectively. Our primary question is whether these plasmonic and catalytic functions can be combined in the assembled structures to engineer the kinetics of a model chemical reaction. To test this hypothesis, the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol was selected to evaluate the collective properties of the micellar assemblies in a chemical reaction.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FSE-68 isolated from meju, a Korean soybean fermentation starter, was identified on the basis of biophysical tests and 16S rRNA gene sequence. A neutral metalloprotease (NPR68) and an alkaline serine-protease (APR68) were purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and cation exchange chromatography and identified on the basis of their activities at different pH values and the selective protease inhibitors. The molecular weights of NPR68 and APR68 measured with ESI-MS were 32743 (+/- 0.8) and 27443 (+/- 0.5) Da, respectively. Against oxidized insulin chains, the NPR68 has a cleavage preference at the site where leucine is located as a P1' residue followed by phenylalanine, and the APR68 has broad specificity and favors leucine at the P1 site. These results indicate that the proteases are natural variants of subtilisin and bacillolysin.
