RESUMO

Heterojunction formation is the key to adjusting the electronic and optoelectronic properties of various semiconductor devices. There have been various reports on the formation and importance of semiconducting heterojunction devices based on metal oxides. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the metal oxides that has many unique properties. TiO2's importance is due to its physical and chemical properties such as large band gap, large permittivity, stability, and low leakage current density. In this context, we present the electrical properties of the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) type-TiO2-based Schottky barrier diode (SBD) in the study. To create a thin layer of TiO2 on p-type silicon (p-type Si) patterned partially by the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) technique, an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique was used in the study. For comparison, the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the TiO2-based laser-patterned (LP) and nonlaser-patterned (non-LP) diodes were measured at 300 K and in the dark at ±5 V. Classical thermionic emission (TE) theory and Cheung functions were used to investigate the critical diode parameters of the diodes, including ideality factor (n), series resistance (Rs), and barrier height (Φb). The n values were obtained as 4.10 and 3.68 from the TE method and Cheung functions for the LP diode, respectively. The Φb values were found as 0.68 and 0.69 eV from the TE method and Cheung functions, respectively. According to experimental results, the laser patterning resulted in an increase in the Φb values and a decrease in the n values. After laser patterning, it was observed that the device worked effectively, and the ideality factor and barrier height values were improved. This study provides insight into the fabrication and electrical properties of TiO2-based heterojunction devices.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a disease characterized by headache attacks. The disease is multifactorial in etiology and genetic and environmental factors play role in pathogenesis. Migraine can also be accompanied by psychiatric disorders like neurotism and obsessive compulsive disorder. Stress, hormonal changes and certain food intake can trigger attacks in migraine. Previous studies showed that eating attitudes and disorders are prevalant in patients with migraine. Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders related to abnormal eating habits. Both migraine and eating disorders are common in young women and personality profiles of these patient groups are also similar. A possible relationship which shows that migraine and eating habits are related can lead to a better understanding of disease pathogenesis and subsequently new therapeutic options on both entities. Association of migraine in relation to severity, depression and anxiety and eating habits and disorders were aimed to be investigated in this study. METHODS: The study was designed as a prospective, multi-center, case control study. Twenty-one centers from Turkey was involved in the study. The gathered data was collected and evaluated at a single designated center. From a pool of 1200 migraine patients and 958 healthy control group, two groups as patient group and study group was created with PS matching method in relation to age, body-mass index, marital status and employment status. Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were applied to both study groups. The data gathered was compared between two groups. RESULTS: EAT-26 scores and the requirement for referral to a psychiatrist due to symptoms related to eating disorder were both statistically significantly higher in patient group compared to control group (p = 0.034 and p = 0.0001 respectively). Patients with migraine had higher scores in both BDI and BAI compared to control group (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.0001 respectively). Severity of pain or frequency of attacks were not found to be related to eating attitudes (r:0.09, p = 0.055). CONCLUSIONS: Migraine patients were found to have higher EAT-26, BDI and BAI scores along with a higher rate of referral to a psychiatrist due to symptoms. Results of the study showed that eating habits are altered in migraine patients with higher risk of eating disorders. Depression and anxiety are also found to be common amongst migraine patients.

Lanthanides are largely used in optoelectronics as dopants to enhance the physical and optical properties of semiconducting devices. In this study, lanthanum(III)hydroxide nanoparticles (La(OH)3NPs) are used as a dopant of polyethylenimine (PEI)-functionalized nitrogen (N)-doped graphene quantum dots (PEI-NGQDs). The La(OH)3NPs-dopedPEI-NGQDs nanocomposites are prepared from La(NO)3 in a single step by a green novel method and are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Deposited over an n-type Si wafer, the La(OH)3NPs-dopedPEI-NGQDs nanocomposites form Schottky diodes. The I-V characteristics and the photoresponse of the diodes are investigated as a function of the illumination intensity in the range 0-110 mW cm-2 and at room temperature. It is found that the rectification ratio and ideality factor of the diode decrease, while the Schottky barrier and series resistance increase with the enhancing illuminations. As a photodetector, the La(OH)3NPs-dopedPEI-NGQDs/n-Si heterojunction exhibits an appreciable responsivity of 3.9 × 10-3 AW-1 under 22 mW cm-2 at -0.3 V bias and a maximum detectivity of 8.7 × 108 Jones under 22 mW cm-2 at -0.5 V. This study introduces the green synthesis and presents the structural, electrical, and optoelectronic properties of La(OH)3NPs-dopedPEI-NGQDs, demonstrating that these nanocomposites can be promising for optoelectronic applications.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics and electrodiagnostic subtypes of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Istanbul. METHODS: Patients with GBS were prospectively recruited between April 2019 and March 2022 and two electrodiagnostic examinations were performed on each patient. The criteria of Ho et al., Hadden et al., Rajabally et al., and Uncini et al. were compared for the differentiation of demyelinating and axonal subtypes, and their relations with anti-ganglioside antibodies were analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred seventy-seven patients were included, 69 before the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic (April 2019-February 2020) and 108 during the pandemic (March 2020-March 2022), without substantial changes in monthly frequencies. As compared with the criteria of Uncini et al., demyelinating GBS subtype diagnosis was more frequent according to the Ho et al. and Hadden et al. criteria (95/162, 58.6% vs. 110/174, 63.2% and 121/174, 69.5%, respectively), and less frequent according to Rajabally et al.'s criteria (76/174, 43.7%). Fourteen patients' diagnoses made using Rajabally et al.'s criteria were shifted to the other subtype with the second electrodiagnostic examination. Of the 106 analyzed patients, 22 had immunoglobulin G anti-ganglioside antibodies (14 with the axonal subtype). They had less frequent sensory symptoms (54.5% vs. 83.1%, p = 0.009), a more frequent history of previous gastroenteritis (54.5% vs. 22.9%, p = 0.007), and a more severe disease as compared with those without antibodies. INTERPRETATION: Serial electrodiagnostic examinations are more helpful for accurate subtype diagnosis of GBS because of the dynamic pathophysiology of the disease. We observed no significant increase in GBS frequency during the pandemic in this metropolis.

OBJECTIVE: This as a cross-sectional controlled clinical study. We hypothesis that the olfactory functions in migraine patients may differ from the healthy controls. In this study, we evaluated the olfactory functions by using a Sniffin' Sticks test battery, which is a reliable and semi quantitative test to evaluate for olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: Patients above 18 years of age who had migraine received a definitive diagnosis of migraine from experienced headache specialists based on the criteria of The International Classification of Headache Disorders-3 were included. Odor threshold, discrimination, and identification parameters were assessed using the "Sniffin' Sticks" test. RESULTS: One-hundred and one migraine patients (age [mean ± SD], 36.9 ± 10.4 years; range, 18-60 years) and sixty healthy volunteers (age 34.5 ± 13.2 years, range 18-65 years) participated in our study. The median odor threshold score [percentiles 25th-75th] was 8.3 [6.5-9.8] for the migraine group during attack free period and 4.5[3.6-6.0] for the control group. It was found that the migraine group had a median odor discrimination score of 10.0 [10.0-13.0] and the control group 12.0 [11.0-13.0]. These differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001 and p = 0.032 respectively). The median odor discrimination and identification scores were statistically significant higher for the participants with higher educational level group than in those of lower educational group (p < 0.0001). The median odor discrimination and identification scores of those without allodynia (12.0 [10.0-14.0] and 13.0 [10.0-13.0] respectively) were higher than that of those with allodynia (11.0 [9.0-12.0] and 11.0 [10.0-13.0] respectively) (p = 0.037 and p = 0.034 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: We found that the odor thresholds, discrimination and identification scores of the migraine group demonstrate differences from those of the healthy group and in relation to allodynia.

Introduction: The 12-item Utah Photophobia Symptom Impact Scale (UPSIS-12) is a questionnaire to assess the impact of photophobia on daily living during and outside migraine episodes. We aimed to translate UPSIS-12 and assess its usability in the Turkish cohort by analyzing internal consistency, reliability, and reproducibility. Methods: In this multicenter prospective, descriptive study, 120 patients with migraine were recruited. The patients received the diagnosis of migraine without aura (MwoA) and migraine with aura (MwA) according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition. The scale was translated into Turkish, and the patients were evaluated by headache experts in two visits four weeks apart from each other. Results: The questionnaire showed highly correlated test-retest reliability (r=0.828). Cronbach alpha values of internal consistency revealed good to excellent results ranging from 0.78-0.82. There was a strong and positive correlation between self and physician-administered scales at both visits (r=0.964 and 0.985, respectively). The questionnaire was considered "well understood" by 95.6% of the patients. The average UPSIS-12 score of each visit was 25.8 and 26.9 (average standard deviation of 10.4). Subjects with MwoA (25.5±10.4) had remarkably lower mean scores compared to MwoA plus MwA (29.2±8.9) and MwA (32.9±9.4) (p=0.0167). Patients with high frequency migraine presented with a higher mean UPSIS-12 score than those with low frequency (31.3±9.5 and 24.7±9.8, respectively). It was noted that the mean UPSIS-12 scores of those with severe (29.4±9.4) and moderate ictal cutaneous allodynia (CA) (28.4±10.6) were higher than those without CA (22.0±9.3)(p=0.020). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the UPSIS-12 questionnaire is a reliable tool and well-understood by the Turkish population. Patients with MwA, frequent migraine headache days and moderate to severe CA presented with higher scores. Given the independent burden of photophobia in migraineurs, the use of UPSIS-12 scale should be encouraged in Turkish population.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the long-term results of patients who underwent facial nerve decompression surgery with either transmastoid-supralabyrinthine (TMSL) or combined transmastoid- middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach for traumatic facial nerve paralysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective case-control study. The medical records of traumatic facial paralysis patients with House Brackmann (HB) Grade 6 who underwent facial nerve decompression surgery at via either TMSL or MCF approach between January 2011 and December 2017 were reviewed. The patients who had otic capsule involvement and total sensorineural hearing loss, therefore underwent translabyrinthine facial nerve decompression, and the patients follow-up period has not yet reached four years were excluded from the study. Postoperative HB score and hearing status were compared. RESULTS: Eleven patients were operated with MCF approach (group 1), while 9 patients with TMSL approach (group 2). Average age of patients was 20.04 + 15.2 (range:4-47) years. Three (15 %) patients were female, while 17 (85 %) was male. Geniculate ganglion (90 %) was the most affected segment of the facial nerve. Facial nerve edema was observed in all cases, while intraneural hematoma were encountered in 4 (20 %) cases. Statistically significant improvement in median HB scores were reached in both groups, and no significant difference was observed in post-operative HB scores between both techniques. No significant difference in median AC 0,5-4 khZ and BC 0,5-3 kHz thresholds was observed between both techniques. CONCLUSION: Even middle fossa approach is the best surgical technique to explore geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine segment of facial nerve, the functional results of transmastoid supralabrynthine approach, which is not needed craniotomy with low complication rate are as successful as middle fossa approach in selected patients.

Objective: To investigate the possible subgroups of patients with Cluster Headache (CH) by using K-means cluster analysis. Methods: A total of 209 individuals (mean (SD) age: 39.8 (11.3) years), diagnosed with CH by headache experts, participated in this cross-sectional multi-center study. All patients completed a semi-structured survey either face to face, preferably, or through phone interviews with a physician. The survey was composed of questions that addressed sociodemographic characteristics as well as detailed clinical features and treatment experiences. Results: Cluster analysis revealed two subgroups. Cluster one patients (n = 81) had younger age at diagnosis (31.04 (9.68) vs. 35.05 (11.02) years; p = 0.009), a higher number of autonomic symptoms (3.28 (1.16) vs. 1.99(0.95); p < 0.001), and showed a better response to triptans (50.00% vs. 28.00; p < 0.001) during attacks, compared with the cluster two subgroup (n = 122). Cluster two patients had higher rates of current smoking (76.0 vs. 33.0%; p=0.002), higher rates of smoking at diagnosis (78.0 vs. 32.0%; p=0.006), higher rates of parental smoking/tobacco exposure during childhood (72.0 vs. 33.0%; p = 0.010), longer duration of attacks with (44.21 (34.44) min. vs. 34.51 (24.97) min; p=0.005) and without (97.50 (63.58) min. vs. (83.95 (49.07) min; p = 0.035) treatment and higher rates of emergency department visits in the last year (81.0 vs. 26.0%; p< 0.001). Conclusions: Cluster one and cluster two patients had different phenotypic features, possibly indicating different underlying genetic mechanisms. The cluster 1 phenotype may suggest a genetic or biology-based etiology, whereas the cluster two phenotype may be related to epigenetic mechanisms. Toxic exposure to cigarettes, either personally or secondarily, seems to be an important factor in the cluster two subgroup, inducing drug resistance and longer attacks. We need more studies to elaborate the causal relationship and the missing links of neurobiological pathways of cigarette smoking regarding the identified distinct phenotypic classes of patients with CH.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of inflammation in the pathophysiology of cluster headache (CH) has been suggested, with a role implied for interleukin (IL)-1ß. We aimed to measure peripheral blood expression levels of IL-1ß-inducing systems, the inflammasome complex, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling, and investigate their values as putative biomarkers in CH. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted in the Headache Unit of Istanbul University, Turkey, blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and sera were collected from 30 patients with episodic migraine, 4 with chronic CH, and 47 healthy individuals. Levels of inflammasome complex components (NLRP1, NLRP3, caspase 1, and ASC), end products of inflammasome complex activity (IL-1ß, IL-18, and nitric oxide synthase isoforms), neuron-specific enolase, other inflammatory factors (NF-κB, HMGB1, and s100b), and anti-inflammatory IL-4 were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and/or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: NLRP3 expression levels were significantly reduced in PBMC samples of patients with CH, obtained during CH attacks (n = 24) or headache-free (out of cycle) episodes (n = 10). CH-attack patients showed greater expression levels of IL-1ß (2-ΔΔCT median [25th-75th percentile], 0.96 [0.66-1.29 vs. 0.52 [0.43-0.73]) and NF-κB (1.06 [0.66-3.00] vs. 0.62 [0.43-1.19]) in PBMCs but not in sera compared with headache-free CH patients. However, these differences did not attain statistical significance (p = 0.058 and p = 0.072, respectively). Moreover, NLRP1 (52.52 [35.48-67.91] vs. 78.66 [54.92-213.25]; p = 0.017), HMGB1 (11.51 [5.20-15.50] vs. 13.33 [8.08-18.13]; p = 0.038), S100b (569.90 [524.10-783.80] vs. 763.40 [590.15-2713.00]; p = 0.013), NSE (11.15 [6.26-14.91] vs. 13.93 [10.82-19.04]; p = 0.021), nNOS (4.24 [3.34-12.85] vs. 12.82 [4.52-15.44]; p = 0.028), and eNOS (64.83 [54.59-91.14] vs. 89.42 [61.19-228.40]; p = 0.034) levels were lower in patients with three or more autonomic manifestations (n = 9). No correlation was found between inflammation factors and clinical parameters of CH. CONCLUSION: Our results support the involvement of the IL-1ß system in attacks of CH. However, the components of the inflammasome complex are suppressed in the peripheral blood and do not appear to play a role in the pathophysiology of CH. These findings argue against a potential biomarker value of the inflammasome complex in CH.

Background and Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of extraocular muscle function testing with video-oculography (VOG), which is a noninvasive and easily applicable method of recording eye movement with digital cameras, to the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG) in patients without any clinical eye movement abnormalities. Methods and Materials: The study included 18 patients prediagnosed with ocular MG: MG Group (N = 7) with abnormal, and non-MG Group (N = 11) with normal single-fiber electromyography. Control group included 50 healthy volunteers. Ocular movements were recorded with the EyeSeeCam VOG device. Results: The inward latency of the 10° horizontal saccade and the downward latency of the 10° vertical saccade were significantly delayed; and the downward amplitude of the 10° vertical saccade was significantly lower in the MG group. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses showed high specificity values for the discrimination of MG patients. Conclusions: This study supports the usefulness of the VOG device in revealing subclinical extraocular muscle involvement in MG.

We investigated how properties of single-fiber action potentials (SFAP) and jitter changed in different recording sites in patients with myopathy and controls. SFAP and jitter were recorded using a disposable single-fiber electrode in the biceps brachii muscle of three patients and controls in two sites: i) near the end-plate zone (EPZ), ii) near the tendon. SFAP and spike duration were longer in patients than in controls. Moving the needle away from the EPZ did not change the electrophysiologic parameters. Longer SFAP duration may reflect slow velocity in muscle fibers and serve as an indicator for small fiber size in myopathy.

Cell adhesion molecules are membrane-bound proteins predominantly expressed in the central nervous system along principal axonal pathways with key roles in nervous system development, neural cell differentiation and migration, axonal growth and guidance, myelination, and synapse formation. Here, we describe ten affected individuals with bi-allelic variants in the neuronal cell adhesion molecule NRCAM that lead to a neurodevelopmental syndrome of varying severity; the individuals are from eight families. This syndrome is characterized by developmental delay/intellectual disability, hypotonia, peripheral neuropathy, and/or spasticity. Computational analyses of NRCAM variants, many of which cluster in the third fibronectin type III (Fn-III) domain, strongly suggest a deleterious effect on NRCAM structure and function, including possible disruption of its interactions with other proteins. These findings are corroborated by previous in vitro studies of murine Nrcam-deficient cells, revealing abnormal neurite outgrowth, synaptogenesis, and formation of nodes of Ranvier on myelinated axons. Our studies on zebrafish nrcamaΔ mutants lacking the third Fn-III domain revealed that mutant larvae displayed significantly altered swimming behavior compared to wild-type larvae (p < 0.03). Moreover, nrcamaΔ mutants displayed a trend toward increased amounts of α-tubulin fibers in the dorsal telencephalon, demonstrating an alteration in white matter tracts and projections. Taken together, our study provides evidence that NRCAM disruption causes a variable form of a neurodevelopmental disorder and broadens the knowledge on the growing role of the cell adhesion molecule family in the nervous system.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Motor unit number estimation by F waves (F-MUNE) is an uncommonly used MUNE technique. Our aim in this study was to assess the sensitivity of F-MUNE values elicited with newly developed software in motor neuron diseases. METHODS: F waves were recorded by 300 submaximal stimuli from abductor digiti minimi and abductor pollicis brevis muscles of 35 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, 18 with previous poliomyelitis, and 20 controls. The software determined the surface motor unit action potentials (sMUAPs) and calculated the F-MUNE values. Compound muscle action potential scans were also recorded to obtain MScanFit. RESULTS: The sMUAP amplitudes were higher and F-MUNE values were lower in both muscles of the patients when compared with controls. F-MUNE values could distinguish patients from controls. Significant correlations were found between F-MUNE and MScanFit in the patient groups. DISCUSSION: The new F-MUNE software offered promising results in revealing motor unit loss caused by motor neuron diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Headache is a frequent adverse event after viral vaccines. We aimed to investigate the frequency and clinical associations of COVID-19 vaccine-related headache. METHODS: The characteristics, associations of this headache, main comorbidities, headache history following the influenza vaccine and during COVID-19 were investigated using a web-based questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 1819 healthcare personnel (mean age: 44.4 ± 13.4 years, 1222 females), vaccinated with inactivated virus, contributed to the survey; 209 (11.4%) had been infected with COVID-19. A total of 556 participants (30.6%) reported headache with significant female dominance (36.1% vs. 19.3%), 1.8 ± 3.5 (median: 1; IQR: 0-2) days following vaccination. One hundred and forty-four participants (25.9%) experienced headache lasting ≥3 days. Headache was mostly bilateral without accompanying phenomena, less severe, and shorter than COVID-19-related headache. The presence of primary headaches and migraine were significantly associated with COVID-19 vaccine-related headache (ORs = 2.16 [95% CI 1.74-2.68] and 1.65 [1.24-2.19], respectively). Headache during COVID-19 or following influenza vaccine also showed significant association with headache following COVID-19 vaccine (OR = 4.3 [95% CI 1.82-10.2] and OR = 4.84 [95% CI 2.84-8.23], respectively). Only thyroid diseases showed a significant association (OR = 1.54 [95% CI 1.15-2.08]) with vaccine-related headache among the common comorbidities. CONCLUSION: Headache is observed in 30.6% of the healthcare workers following COVID-19 vaccine and mostly experienced by females with pre-existing primary headaches, thyroid disorders, headache during COVID-19, or headache related to the influenza vaccine.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the audiological, radiological, and examination findings of patients who have been treated for hearing loss (HL) due to head trauma and evaluated in terms of causality to reveal current data, and to highlight the steps to be taken. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the reports of cases that had applied for disability with HL due to head injury and had been evaluated by the Forensic Medicine Institute between January 01, 2009 and January 01, 2019. RESULTS: Of the total cases of head trauma, 52.42% were not vehicle-related, and cases were observed to be concentrated in the age range of 19-40 (55.92%; n = 283). Although otorrhagia/otorrhea was the most common finding in all types of trauma, TM perforation was the most common finding in blast-type injuries. While the rate of newly developed unilateral HL was 84.2%, 72.7% of the patients had sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) . Temporal bone fractures were detected in 59.3% of the cases, and 60.2% of them were of the longitudinal type. Facial paralysis (FP) was detected in 28.6% of the cases, and there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of HL compared to those without FP. Other nerve palsy was detected in 4.9% of the cases, and N. Abducens paralysis was the most common. CONCLUSION: Accompanying intracranial nerve injury, temporal fracture, and intracranial pathologies are considerably high in patients who develop HL following head trauma. The first examination requires a multidisciplinary approach to guide future disability applications.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in chronic low back pain and neuropathic pain. METHODS: Seventy-four patients aged 18-65 with chronic low back pain were included in the study. Baseline measurements were performed, and patients were randomized into three groups. The first group received burst TENS (bTENS), the second group conventional TENS (cTENS), and the third group placebo TENS (pTENS), all over 15 sessions. Patients' visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were evaluated before treatment (preT), immediately after treatment (postT), and in the third month after treatment (postT3). Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4), the Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (MOS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and sympathetic skin response (SSR) values were also evaluated preT and postT3. RESULTS: A statistically significant improvement was observed in mean VAS scores postT compared to preT in all three groups. Intergroup comparison revealed a significant difference between preT and postT values, that difference being assessed in favor of bTENS at multiple comparison analysis. Although significant improvement was determined in neuropathic pain DN4 scores measured at postT3 compared to preT in all groups, there was no significant difference between the groups. No statistically significant difference was also observed between the groups in terms of MOS, BDI, or SSR values at postT3 (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: bTENS therapy in patients with low back pain is an effective and safe method that can be employed in short-term pain control.

OBJECTIVE: Cluster headache (CH) is a primary headache characterized by strictly unilateral, short-lasting severe headache attacks accompanied by at least one ipsilateral autonomic symptom. Our study aimed to determine whether CH patients had olfactory dysfunction and to correlate it with clinical characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients and 57 healthy volunteers were included in the study. All participants were examined in the otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinics to exclude other clinical problems causing olfactory dysfunction. The Sniffin' Sticks test was performed, and threshold (T), discrimination (D), identification (I) scores, and TDI global olfactory score were evaluated. RESULTS: The CH patients had significantly lower threshold scores than healthy controls (6.9 ± 1.70 vs. 7.8 ± 1.08, p = 0.007). The mean threshold scores of CH patients during in-bout (n = 9) were significantly lower than CH patients during out-of-bout (n = 11) in subgroup analysis (5.9 ± 1.16 vs. 7.6 ± 1.76, p = 0.038). CH patients with left-sided headache had significantly lower discrimination scores compared to CH patients with right-sided headache (12.8 ± 1.24 vs. 14.4 ± 1.51, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: There is marked impairment in olfactory function in CH patients compared to healthy controls.

PURPOSE: To examine upper motor neuron functions comparatively in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and poliomyelitis survivors using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) methods. METHODS: Single- and paired-pulse TMS with conventional methods and the triple-stimulation technique were performed by recording from the abductor digiti minimi and abductor pollicis brevis muscles in 31 patients with ALS, 18 patients with poliomyelitis survivors, and 21 controls. Nine patients were diagnosed as having postpoliomyelitis syndrome after a 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: Triple-stimulation technique and some of conventional TMS studies were able to distinguish ALS from both poliomyelitis survivors and controls. A reduced ipsilateral silent period in abductor pollicis brevis muscles was the only parameter to show a significant difference when comparing thenar and hypothenar muscles in ALS. No significant difference was present in any TMS parameters between the postpoliomyelitis syndrome and non-postpoliomyelitis syndrome groups. CONCLUSIONS: Conventional TMS and particularly triple-stimulation technique studies are helpful in disclosing upper motor neuron dysfunction in ALS. The results of this study might favor the cortical hypothesis for split hand in ALS, but they revealed no significant indication for upper motor neuron dysfunction in postpoliomyelitis syndrome.

AIM: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a disease of obscure origin, is characterized by headache and visual disturbances due to increased intracranial pressure. Recent line of evidence has suggested involvement of inflammation in IIH pathogenesis thus bringing forward anti-glial autoimmunity as a potential contributor of IIH. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a major astrocytic autoantigen associated with a specific form of meningoencephalitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we investigated the presence of GFAP-antibody in 65 sera (49 obtained during active disease and 16 during remission) and in 15 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of 58 consecutively recruited IIH patients using cell based assay and indirect immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: GFAP-antibody was found in active period sera of 2 IIH patients with classical symptoms and good treatment response. Two remission period sera obtained at different time points from one of these cases showed lower titers of GFAP-antibody positivity. IgG from positive samples yielded an astrocytic immunoreactivity pattern. None of the CSF samples showed GFAP-antibodies. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that anti-astrocyte autoimmunity might be present in a fraction of IIH patients. Exact pathogenic significance of this association needs to be further studied.

BACKGROUND: Headache is the most common COVID-19-related neurological symptom. We aimed to reveal diagnostic clues of headache for COVID-19 infection and to investigate the course of primary headaches during the pandemic. METHODS: We developed a detailed web-based questionnaire screening the characteristics and course of headaches besides clinical COVID-19 features. The participants were grouped according to being diagnosed with COVID-19 infection or not, and having previous or new-onset headaches. The COVID-19 related headache features and their associations with other clinical features were investigated. A binary logistic regression model was performed to differentiate the characteristics of headache related to COVID-19. FINDINGS: A total of 3458 participants (2341 females;67.7%, 1495 healthcare workers;43.2%) with a mean age of 43.21 ± 11.2 years contributed to the survey. Among them, 262 participants had COVID-19 diagnosis and 126 (48.1%) were male. The rate of males in the group without COVID-19 was 31% (991 out of 3196 participants) showing significant gender difference between groups (p < 0.000). COVID-19 related headaches were more closely associated with anosmia/ageusia and gastrointestinal complaints (p < 0.000 and p < 0.000), and showed different characteristics like pulsating, pressing, and even stabbing quality. Logistic regression analyses showed that bilateral headache, duration over 72 h, analgesic resistance and having male gender were significant variables to differentiate COVID-19 positive patients from those without COVID-19 (p = 0.04 for long duration and p < 0.000 for others). A worsening of previous primary headaches due to the pandemic-related problems was not reported in the majority of patients. INTERPRETATION: Bilateral, long-lasting headaches, resistance to analgesics and having male gender were more frequent in people with COVID-19 in conjunction with anosmia/ageusia and gastrointestinal complaints. These features may be helpful for diagnosing the headache related to COVID-19 during the pandemic.
