RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With increased attention to the importance of integrating the One Health approach into zoonotic disease surveillance and response, a greater understanding of the mechanisms to support effective communication and information sharing across animal and human health sectors is needed. The objectives of this qualitative case study were to describe the communication channels used between human and animal health stakeholders and to identify the elements that have enabled the integration of the One Health approach. METHODS: We combined documentary research with interviews with fifteen stakeholders to map the communication channels used in human and swine influenza surveillance in Alberta, Canada, as well as in the response to a human case of H1N2v in 2020. A thematic analysis of the interviews was also used to identify the barriers and facilitators to communication among stakeholders from the animal and human health sectors. RESULTS: When a human case of swine influenza emerged, the response led by the provincial Chief Medical Officer of Health involved players at various levels of government and in the human and animal health sectors. The collaboration of public and animal health laboratories and of the swine sector, in addition to the information available through the surveillance systems in place, was swift and effective. Elements identified as enabling smooth communication between the human and animal health systems included preexisting relationships between the various stakeholders, a relationship of trust between them (e.g., the swine sector and their perception of government structures), the presence of stakeholders acting as permanent liaisons between the ministries of health and agriculture, and stakeholders' understanding of the importance of the One Health approach. CONCLUSIONS: Information flows through formal and informal channels and both structural and relational features that can support rapid and effective communication in infectious disease surveillance and outbreak response.

Canada experienced a wave of HPAI H5N1 outbreaks in the spring of 2022 with millions of wild and farmed birds being infected. Seabird mortalities in Canada have been particularly severe on the Atlantic Coast over the summer of 2022. Over 7 million birds have been culled in Canada, and outbreaks continue to profoundly affect commercial bird farms across the world. This new H5N1 virus can and has infected multiple mammalian species, including skunks, foxes, bears, mink, seals, porpoises, sea lions, and dolphins. Viruses with mammalian adaptations such as the mutations PB2-E627K, E627V, and D701N were found in the brain of various carnivores in Europe and Canada. To date this specific clade of H5N1 virus has been identified in less than 10 humans. At the ground level, awareness should be raised among frontline practitioners most likely to encounter patients with HPAI.


Le Canada a vécu un vague d'éclosions de grippe aviaire de souche H5N1 hautement pathogène au printemps 2022 lorsque des millions d'oiseaux sauvages et d'oiseaux d'élevage ont été infectés. La mortalité des oiseaux marins au Canada a été particulièrement marquée sur la côte Atlantique pendant l'été 2022. Plus de sept millions d'oiseaux ont été abattus au Canada, et les éclosions continuent de nuire profondément aux élevages commerciaux d'oiseaux dans le monde. Ce nouveau virus H5N1 peut infecter de multiples espèces de mammifères, y compris des mouffettes, des renards, des ours, des visons, des phoques, des marsouins, des otaries et des dauphins. Les virus adaptés aux mammifères et porteurs des mutations PB2-E627K, E627V et D701N, ont été observés dans le cerveau de divers carnivores de l'Europe et du Canada. RESUMO

An unidentified myxosporean parasite (CKX) is described from the kidney of approximately 80% of spawning coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) in British Columbia, Canada and Washington, United States of America. Morphological features were described using light and electron microscopy. Sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified 18S ribosomal RNA gene and in situ hybridisation were used to further characterise CKX. The parasite occurred with a focal distribution within tubule epithelial cells, the tubule lumen and the interstitium as primary cells containing from one to at least 16 secondary cells. Luminal stages were degenerate and sporogony was not observed. In situ hybridisation using a digoxygenin-labelled DNA probe confirmed CKX to be the source of DNA used in PCR analyses. CKX 18S rDNA sequences were most similar (97%) to those of Sphaerospora oncorhynchi. Phylogenetic analysis revealed similarities among the 18S rDNA sequences of CKX, S. oncorhynchi and Myxidium lieberkuehni. CKX is hypothesised to be the abortive extrasporogonic development of a Sphaerospora sp. or Myxidium sp. occurring in immune-incompetent spawning and senescent salmon.
