The annual increase in global organic waste generation emphasises the need to develop a sustainable management platform to address environmental concerns. This study aims to explore sustainable treatments for the conversion of organic waste into energy in pursuit of zero-waste. The organic waste generated from the animal feed industry (referred to as WF) was used for the model compound in this study. 8.5 wt.% of lipids were extracted from the WF, which contained unidentified impurities. Acid-catalysed transesterification yielded less than 80 wt.% biodiesel might be due to the reversible reaction. In contrast, non-catalytic transesterification resulted in a significantly higher biodiesel yield (95.6 wt.%), suggesting that this method was more effective at converting impure lipids into biodiesel compared to acid-catalysed transesterification. These results indicate the potential advantages of the non-catalytic approach, particularly when dealing with impure lipid sources. To minimise the generation of waste in the process, the WF residue produced after lipid extraction was converted into combustible gas (syngas) through pyrolysis. CO2 was used as a reactive medium in pyrolysis. In one-stage pyrolysis, the gas yield under CO2 was comparable to that under N2, indicating that CO2 did not react effectively with the volatiles derived from the WF residue. Enhanced CO2 reactivity was achieved via catalytic pyrolysis using a nickel-impregnated catalyst. Consequently, the combustible gas yield under CO2 was much higher than that under N2. This approach might contribute to maximising the efficiency of converting organic waste into renewable energy while simultaneously consuming CO2 during pyrolysis, thereby enhancing the sustainability of this approach.

To address the challenges associated with medical plastic waste and to characterize its heterogeneity, non-recyclability, and potential biohazard risks, this study explored a carbon dioxide (CO2)-assisted pyrolysis process as a sustainable disposal method. Medical plastic waste typically includes polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride. To experimentally evaluate the functional reactivity of CO2, we employed three pyrolysis setups (one-stage, two-stage, and catalytic processes). The technical advantages of using CO2 over inert gases such as nitrogen (N2) were demonstrated through pyrolysis tests. The results showed that energy production was enhanced under CO2 conditions, with catalytic pyrolysis generating 146% more flammable gases compared to pyrolysis in an N2 environment. The use of CO2 also led to a reduction in the formation of toxic chemicals due to improved thermal cracking. The CO2-assisted pyrolysis process exhibited net negative CO2 emissions when a catalyst was present, as a substantial amount of CO2 was consumed during the process. In conclusion, CO2-assisted pyrolysis of medical plastic waste offers a sustainable management solution that maximizes the utilization of carbon resources.

Chiral hybrid perovskites show promise for advanced spin-resolved optoelectronics due to their excellent polarization-sensitive properties. However, chiral perovskites developed to date rely solely on the interaction between chiral organic ligand cations exhibiting point chirality and an inorganic framework, leading to a poorly ordered short-range chiral system. Here, we report a powerful method to overcome this limitation using dynamic long-range organization of chiral perovskites guided by the incorporation of chiral dopants, which induces strong interactions between chiral dopants and chiral cations. The additional interplay of chiral cations with chiral dopants reorganizes the morphological and crystallographic properties of chiral perovskites, notably enhancing the asymmetric behavior of chiral 2D perovskites by more than 10-fold, along with the highest dissymmetry factor of photocurrent (gPh) of ~1.16 reported to date. Our findings present a pioneering approach to efficiently amplify the chiroptical response in chiral perovskites, opening avenues for exploring their potential in cutting-edge optoelectronic applications.

Thermosetting polymers are used in a wide range of applications due to their robust mechanical strength and superior flame retardancy. Despite these technical benefits, recycling of thermosetting polymers has been challenging because of their crosslinking nature. Moreover, their disposal through conventional methods (landfill and combustion) poses environmental concerns, such as microplastics and air pollutants. To address these issues, this study introduces a thermo-chemical disposal platform for thermosetting polymer wastes that employs carbon dioxide (CO2) as a reactive medium. In this work, melamine-formaldehyde was used as model compound of thermosetting polymers. In single-stage pyrolysis, it was revealed that CO2 plays a crucial role in controlling in the compositional matrices of pyrolytic gases, liquid products, and wax. These compositional changes were attributed to the homogeneous reactions between CO2 and the volatile compounds released from the thermolysis of MF. To enhance the thermal cracking of the MF, a double-stage pyrolysis process was tested, which increased the production of pyrolytic gases and eliminated wax formation. However, the slow kinetics governing the reactivity of CO2 limits the occurrence of homogeneous reactions. A nickel-based catalyst was used to accelerate reaction kinetics. The catalytic pyrolysis under CO2 conditions led to substantial increases in syngas (H2 and CO) production of 880% and 460%, respectively, compared with double-stage pyrolysis. These findings demonstrate that thermosetting polymer wastes can be valorized into gaseous fuels through thermo-chemical process, and CO2 enhances the recovery of energy and chemicals. Therefore, this study presents an innovative technical platform to convert thermosetting polymer wastes and CO2 into syngas.

Porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) is a member of the species Alphacoronavirus 1 within the genus Alphacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae. A few studies have been conducted on the prevalence of PRCV since its first identification in 1997, but there have been no recent studies on the prevalence and genetic characterization of the virus in Korea. In this study, the seroprevalence of PRCV was determined in Korean pig farms using a commercially available TGEV/PRCV differential enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The farm-level seroprevalence of PRCV was determined to be 68.6% (48/70), similar to previous reports in Korea, suggesting that PRCV is still circulating in Korean pig herds nationwide. Among the 20 PRCV-seropositive farms tested in this study, PRCV RNAs were detected in 17 oral fluid samples (28.3%) from nine farms (45.0%), while TGEV RNAs were not detected in any sample. To investigate the genetic characteristics of Korean PRCV strains, genetic and phylogenetic analyses were conducted on PRCV spike gene sequences obtained in this study. The three Korean PRCV strains (KPRCV2401, KPRCV2402, and KPRCV2403) shared 98.5-100% homology with each other and 96.2-96.6% and 91.6-94.5% homology with European and American strains, respectively. A 224-amino acid deletion was found in the S gene of both Korean and European PRCVs but not in that of American PRCVs, suggesting a European origin for Korean PRCVs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Korean PRCVs are more closely related to European PRCVs than American PRCVs but clustered apart from both, suggesting that Korean PRCV has evolved independently since its emergence in Korean PRCVs. The results of this study will help expand knowledge on the epidemiology and molecular biology of PRCV currently circulating in Korea.

Multi-scale simulation is an important basis for constructing digital batteries to improve battery design and application. LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is experimentally proven to be crucial for the electrochemical performance of lithium metal batteries. However, the LiF-rich SEI is sensitive to various electrolyte formulas and the fundamental mechanism is still unclear. Herein, the structure and formation mechanism of LiF-rich SEI in different electrolyte formulas have been reviewed. On this basis, it further discussed the possible filming mechanism of LiF-rich SEI determined by the initial adsorption of the electrolyte-derived species on the lithium metal anode (LMA). It proposed that individual LiF species follow the Volmer-Weber mode of film growth due to its poor wettability on LMA. Whereas, the synergistic adsorption of additive-derived species with LiF promotes the Frank-Vander Merwe mode of film growth, resulting in uniform LiF deposition on the LMA surface. This perspective provides new insight into the correlation between high LiF content, wettability of LiF, and highperformance of uniform LiF-rich SEI. It disclosed the importance of additive assistant synergistic adsorption on the uniform growth of LiF-rich SEI, contributing to the reasonable design of electrolyte formulas and high-performance LMA, and enlightening the way for multi-scale simulation of SEI.

Neuroinflammation is an inflammatory immune response that arises in the central nervous system. It is one of the primary causes of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Phloroglucinol (PG) is a natural product contained in extracts of plant, algae and microbe and has been reported to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we synthesized PG derivatives to enhance antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Among PG derivatives, 6 a suppressed pro-oxidative and inflammatory molecule nitric oxide (NO) production more effectively than PG. Moreover, 6 a dose-dependently reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and NO producing enzyme iNOS in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. Additionally, we confirmed that 6 a alleviated cognitive impairment and glial activation in mouse model of LPS-induced neuroinflammation. These findings suggest that novel PG derivative, 6 a, is a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.

Objective: Microscopic microvascular decompression (MVD) has been considered to be a useful treatment modality for medically refractory hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN). But, the advent of the endoscopic era has presented new possibilities to MVD surgery. While the microscope remains a valuable tool, the endoscope offers several advantages with comparable clinical outcomes. Thus, fully endoscopic MVD (E-MVD) could be a reasonable alternative to microscopic MVD. This paper explores the safety and efficacy of the fully E-MVD technique. Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted in 25 patients diagnosed with HFS between September 2019 and July 2023. All surgeries were performed by a single neurosurgeon using the fully E-MVD technique without any assistance of a microscope. The study reviewed intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials and disappearance of the lateral spread response. Outcomes were assessed based on the patients' clinical status immediately after surgery and at their last follow-up. Complications, including facial palsy, hearing loss, ataxia, dysphagia, palsy of other cranial nerves, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, were also examined. Results: The most common offending artery was the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) in 15 cases (60.0%), followed by the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) in 8 cases (32.0%), vertebral artery (VA) in 1 case (4.0%), tandem lesions involving the AICA and VA in 1 case (4.0%). Ten patients (40.0%) had pre-operative facial palsy on the ipsilateral side, and 8 patients (32.0%) experienced delayed facial palsy on the ipsilateral side, from which they fully recovered by the last follow-up. The median operation time was 105 minutes. All patients were symptom free immediately after surgery and at the last follow-up. One patient experienced a permanent complication, such as high-frequency hearing loss, from which he partially recovered over time. Conclusion: Fully E-MVD demonstrated similar clinical outcomes to microscopic MVD. It offered a similar complication rate, shorter operation time, and a panoramic view with a smaller craniectomy size. Although there is a learning curve associated with fully E-MVD, it presents a viable alternative in the endoscopic era.

OBJECTIVE: A stretched coil, characterized by excessive elongation within the parent artery during a coil embolization procedure, poses a significant risk of forming a thrombus. This study reports on cases of stretched coils spanning 16 years and discusses effective assessment methods and treatment strategies. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of the institutional database comprising 14 cases where stretched coils were observed during coil embolization procedures was conducted, starting from January 2007. RESULTS: Among the 14 cases, four involved coil embolization for subarachnoid hemorrhage due to ruptured aneurysm, while the remaining cases were unruptured aneurysms. Starting in 2017, vaso-computed tomography (vaso-CT) was employed in nine cases to evaluate the proximal end of the stretched coils. Reimplantation was performed in 3 cases. Among them, two cases were relieved by pushing the coil delivery wire or microwire, while one case underwent balloon-assisted reimplantation. The stretched coils were removed in three cases by pulling. A rescue gooseneck microsnare technique was applied in one case. The stent was fixed in five cases. In two cases, no additional procedures were performed. Thrombosis is a potential complication that occurred in three cases of stretched coils. CONCLUSION: Many studies have addressed coil stretching and introduced various rescue methods, but relying solely on angiography for diagnosis or applying an inappropriate rescue technique can lead to ischemic stroke. This study emphasized the importance of vaso-CT as a tool for accurately identifying the proximal end of a stretched coil. Additionally, we aimed to facilitate the selection of an appropriate rescue technique.

In this study, GPS trackers were attached to black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) breeding on five islands in Republic of Korea during April and May 2021, and their flight frequency, behavioral range, and flight altitude were compared during and after the breeding season. During the breeding season, the flight frequency was lowest on Dongman Island (28.7%), where mudflats were distributed nearby, and the range of activity was narrow. In contrast, it tended to be high on Gungsi Island (52%), where the breeding colony was far from land, resulting in a wider range of activity. Although the flight frequency on Dongman Island increased post-breeding season (42.7%), it decreased on other islands. The mean flight altitude during the breeding season was lowest on Dongman Island and highest on Napdaegi Island. In most breeding areas, the mean flight altitude during the post-breeding season was higher than that during the breeding season. However, the lead flight altitude was lower during the non-breeding season compared to that in the breeding season. The home range expanded after the breeding season, with no significant difference in lead time between the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Our findings reveal that black-tailed gulls exhibit varying home ranges and flight altitudes depending on season and geographical location. As generalists, gulls display flexible responses to environmental changes, indicating that flight behavior adapts to the evolving environment over time and across regions.

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is a rare condition affecting approximately 1.5% of 1,000,000 individuals annually. It frequently occurs in the transsigmoid and cavernous sinuses. An isolated sigmoid sinus is extremely rare and is treated by performing transfemoral transvenous embolization along the opposite transverse sinus. A 69-year-old woman presented with asymptomatic Borden type III/Cognard type III DAVF involving an isolated sigmoid sinus. She underwent a staged operation in which a navigation system was used to expose the sigmoid sinus in the operating room before transferring the patient to the angio suite for transvenous embolization. Various modalities have been used to treat DAVF, including surgical disconnection, transarterial embolization, transvenous embolization, and stereotactic radiosurgery. However, treating DAVF cases where the affected sinus is isolated can be challenging because an easily accessible surgical route may not be available. In this case, direct sinus cannulation and transvenous embolization were the most effective treatments.

BACKGROUNDS: This study aimed to compare the incidence of bile reflux, quality of life (QoL), and nutritional status among Billroth II (BII), Billroth II with Braun anastomosis (BII-B), and Roux-en-Y (RY) reconstruction after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the prospective data of 397 patients from a multicentre database who underwent LDG for gastric cancer between 2018 and 2020 at 20 tertiary teaching hospitals in Korea. Postoperative endoscopic findings, QoL surveys using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire (C30 and STO22), and nutritional and surgical outcomes were compared among groups. RESULTS: In endoscopic findings, bile reflux was the lowest in the RY group ( n =67), followed by the BII-B ( n =183) and BII groups ( n =147) at 1 year (3.0 vs. 67.8 vs. 84.4%, all P <0.05). The anti-reflux capability of BII-B was statistically better than that of BII, but not as perfect as that of RY. From the perspective of QoL, BII-B was not inferior to RY, but better than BII reconstruction in causing fewer STO22 reflux symptoms at 6 and 12 months. However, only RY caused fewer C30 nausea symptoms than BII at 6 and 12 months, but not BII-B. Nutritional status and morbidities were similar among the three groups, and the operative time did not differ between the BII-B and RY groups. CONCLUSIONS: BII-B cannot substitute for RY in preventing bile reflux, shortening the operative time, or reducing morbidities. Regarding short-term QoL, BII-B was sufficient to reduce STO22 reflux symptoms but failed to reduce C30 nausea symptoms postoperatively.

Novel swine orthopneumovirus (SOV) infections have been identified in pigs in the USA and some European countries but not in Asian countries, including South Korea, to date. The current study reports the first SOV infections in four domestic pig farms located in four provinces across South Korea. The detection rate of SOV in oral fluid samples using qRT-PCR was 4.4% (14/389), indicating the presence of the virus in pigs at commercial farms in Korea. Two complete genome sequences and one glycoprotein (G) gene sequence were obtained from SOV-positive samples. The complete genome analysis of KSOV-2201 and KSOV-2202 strains showed 98.2 and 95.4% homologies with a previously reported SOV, and the phylogenetic tree exhibited a high correlation with a previously reported SOV strain from the US and a canine pneumovirus (CPnV) strain from China. Based on the genetic analysis of the viral G gene, the murine pneumonia virus (MPV)-like orthopneumoviruses (MLOVs) were divided into two genogroups (G1 and G2). Seventeen CPnVs and two feline pneumoviruses were grouped into G1, while the Korean SOV strains identified in this study were grouped into G2 along with one SOV and two CPnVs. These results will contribute to expanding our understanding of the geographical distribution and genetic characteristics of the novel SOV in the global pig population.

For rapid and reliable detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) from pig clinical samples, a multiplex, real-time, reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (mqRT-LAMP) was developed using two sets of primers and assimilating probes specific to the PEDV N gene and the Sus scrofa ß-actin gene, which was used as an endogenous internal positive control (EIPC) to avoid false-negative results. The assay specifically amplified both target genes of PEDV and EIPC in a single reaction without any interference but did not amplify other porcine viral nucleic acids. The limit of detection was 10 copies/µL, 100-fold lower than that of a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and equivalent to that of quantitative/real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). This assay has high repeatability and reproducibility with coefficients of variation < 4.0%. The positive signal of the mqRT-LAMP assay was generated within 25 min, demonstrating advantages in rapid detection of PEDV over RT-PCR or qRT-PCR assay, which require at least 2 h turnaround times. In clinical evaluation, the detection rate of PEDV by mqRT-LAMP assay (77.3%) was higher than that of RT-PCR assay (69.7%), and comparable to qRT-PCR (76.8%) with almost 100% concordance (kappa value 0.98). The developed mqRT-LAMP assay can serve as an advanced alternative method for PEDV diagnosis because it has high sensitivity and specificity, rapidity, and reliability even in resource-limited laboratories.

A novel reversible monoamine oxidase B inhibitor, KDS2010, has been developed as a therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative diseases. This study investigated its potential toxicity in non-human primates before human clinical trials. Daily KDS2010 doses (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg) were orally administered to cynomolgus monkeys (1 animal/sex/group, 4 males and 4 females) for 2 weeks to determine the dose range. One male was moribund, and one female was found dead in the 100 mg/kg/day group. One male was also found dead in the 50 mg/kg/day group. The death was considered an adverse effect in both sexes since distal tubules/collecting duct dilation and hypertrophy in the epithelium of the papillary duct were observed in their kidneys. Based on dose range finding results, KDS2010 (10, 20, or 40 mg/kg/day) was administered orally for 4 weeks, and animals were given 2 weeks for recovery. No significant changes were observed during daily clinical observations and macro-and microscopic examinations, including body weight, food consumption, hematology, clinical chemistry, and organ weight. And, the kidney was seen as the primary target organ of KDS2010 in the 2 weeks study, but no adverse effect was observed in the 4 weeks study. Formulating a therapeutic strategy that can effectively combat concurrent infections of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) and Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) can be challenging. This study aimed to 1) establish minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), time kill curve, and post-antibiotic effect (PAE) of tylosin against A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida pig isolates and employ the MIC data for the development of epidemiological cutoff (ECOFF) values; 2) estimate the pharmacokinetics (PKs) of tylosin following its intramuscular (IM) administration (20 mg/kg) in healthy and infected pigs; and 3) establish a PK-pharmacodynamic (PD) integrated model and predict optimal dosing regimens and PK/PD cutoff values for tylosin in healthy and infected pigs. The MIC of tylosin against both 89 and 363 isolates of A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida strains spread widely, ranging from 1 to 256 µg/mL and from 0.5 to 128 µg/mL, respectively. According to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) ECOFFinder analysis ECOFF value (≤64 µg/mL), 97.75% (87 strains) of the A. pleuropnumoniae isolates were wild-type, whereas with the same ECOFF value (≤64 µg/mL), 99.72% (363 strains) of the P. multicoda isolates were considered wild-type to tylosin. Area under the concentration time curve (AUC), T1/2, and Cmax values were significantly greater in healthy pigs than those in infected pigs (13.33 h × µg/mL, 1.99 h, and 5.79 µg/mL vs. 10.46 h × µg/mL, 1.83 h, and 3.59 µg/mL, respectively) (p < 0.05). In healthy pigs, AUC24 h/MIC values for the bacteriostatic activity were 0.98 and 1.10 h; for the bactericidal activity, AUC24 h/MIC values were 1.97 and 1.99 h for A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida, respectively. In infected pigs, AUC24 h/MIC values for the bacteriostatic activity were 1.03 and 1.12 h; for bactericidal activity, AUC24 h/MIC values were 2.54 and 2.36 h for A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida, respectively. Monte Carlo simulation lead to a 2 µg/mL calculated PK/PD cutoff. Managing co-infections can present challenges, as it often demands the administration of multiple antibiotics to address diverse pathogens. However, using tylosin, which effectively targets both A. pleuropneumoniae and P. multocida in pigs, may enhance the control of bacterial burden. By employing an optimized dosage of 11.94-15.37 mg/kg and 25.17-27.79 mg/kg of tylosin can result in achieving bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects in 90% of co-infected pigs.

Regulatory T cells (Treg) are CD4+ T cells with immune-suppressive function, which is defined by Foxp3 expression. However, the molecular determinants defining the suppressive population of T cells have yet to be discovered. Here we report that the cell surface protein Lrig1 is enriched in suppressive T cells and controls their suppressive behaviors. Within CD4+ T cells, Treg cells express the highest levels of Lrig1, and the expression level is further increasing with activation. The Lrig1+ subpopulation from T helper (Th) 17 cells showed higher suppressive activity than the Lrig1- subpopulation. Lrig1-deficiency impairs the suppressive function of Treg cells, while Lrig1-deficient naïve T cells normally differentiate into other T cell subsets. Adoptive transfer of CD4+Lrig1+ T cells alleviates autoimmune symptoms in colitis and lupus nephritis mouse models. A monoclonal anti-Lrig1 antibody significantly improves the symptoms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. In conclusion, Lrig1 is an important regulator of suppressive T cell function and an exploitable target for treating autoimmune conditions.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), a member of the species Protoparvovirus carnivoran1, is one of the most fatal pathogens of domestic and wild carnivores. The virus endemically infects domestic carnivores worldwide and its cross-species transmission threatens endangered wild carnivores, including Siberian tigers. In this study, a fatal FPV infection in endangered Siberian tigers was investigated to trace the origin of the virus and elucidate the reason behind FPV's infection of the vaccinated tigers. Our genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the virus detected in the infected tigers, designated as the KTPV-2305 strain, was closely related to FPV strains circulating in Korean cats, suggesting that it might have been transmitted from stray cats wandering around the zoo. Compared with the prototype FPV reference strains, the KTPV-2305 strain carried three distinct amino acid (aa) mutations in the VP2 protein sequence (I101T, I232V, and L562V) in this study. These three mutations are commonly found in most global FPV strains, including Korean strains, indicating that these mutations are common evolutionary characteristics of currently circulating global FPVs. The reason why the vaccinated tigers were infected with FPV was most likely the insufficient protective immunity of the affected tigress or vaccine failure triggered by the interference of maternal-derived antibodies in the affected tiger cubs. These findings suggest that improved vaccination guidelines are urgently needed to save the lives of wild carnivores from this fatal virus.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the therapeutic efficacy of intraperitoneal photodynamic therapy (PDT) using photosensitizer activation at two different wavelengths, 405 and 664 nm, in a mouse model of peritoneal carcinomatosis. METHODS: The dark and light cytotoxicity of chlorin e6-polyvinylpyrrolidone (Phonozen) were measured in vitro under 402 ± 14 and 670 ± 18 nm LED activation in bioluminescent human gastric cancer cells, MKN45-luc. Cell viability was measured at 6 h after irradiation using the PrestoBlue assay. Corresponding in vivo studies were performed in athymic nude mice by intraperitoneal injection of 1 × 106 MKN45-luc cells. PDT was performed 10 d after tumor induction and comprised intraperitoneal injection of Phonozen followed by light irradiation at 3 h, delivered by a diffusing-tip optical fiber placed in the peritoneal cavity and coupled to a 405 or 664 nm diode laser to deliver a total energy of 50 J (20 mice per cohort). Whole-body bioluminescence imaging was used to track the tumor burden after PDT out to 130 days, and 5 mice in each cohort were sacrificed at 4 h post treatment to measure the acute tumor necrosis. RESULTS: Photosensitizer dose-dependent photocytotoxicity was higher in vitro at 405 than 664 nm. In vivo, PDT reduced the tumor growth rate at both wavelengths, with no statistically significant difference. There was substantial necrosis, and median survival was significantly prolonged at both wavelengths compared with controls (46 and 46 vs. 34 days). CONCLUSIONS: Phonozen-mediated PDT results in significant cytotoxicity in vitro as well as tumor necrosis and prolonged survival in vivo following intraperitoneal light irradiation. Blue light was more photocytotoxic than red in vitro and had marginally higher efficacy in vivo.
