RESUMO

PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the personality types of the graduate students in Seoul National University School of Dentistry (SNU SD) and analyze the specific personal types that were linked to their performance in problem-based learning (PBL). METHODS: A total of 263 graduate students in SNU SD from 2011 to 2013, participated in PBL and completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) GS form, which was analyzed statistically to determine whether their MBTI personality types were independent of their PBL performance. In particular, MBTI types were regressed on evaluation subcategories, including tutor evaluation and oral test. RESULTS: ESTJ (20.9%) and ISTJ (18.6%) were the most common MBTI personality types in dental graduate students. Compared with males, female students performed significantly better on the PBL. Judging was the most notable type in PBL performance, with its J-P index being statistically significant. CONCLUSION: PBL is implemented, based on the perspective of student-centered education. Accordingly, the types of personality that usually matriculate in dental school should be monitored, and a student-centered approach to dental education should be adopted.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle which controls synthesis of secretory and membrane proteins. Alterations in protein folding capacity, leading to ER stress, can be observed in patients with diabetes and related diseases such as xerostomia. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of Ixeris dentata (IXD) extract, which has been used for diabetes treatment, and compounds purified from IXD, 8-epidesacylcynaropicrin-3-O-beta-glucopyranoside (ID-57D), on amylase synthesis and secretion in human salivary gland (HSG) cells exposed to a high concentration of glucose. A high concentration of glucose in the experimental medium of cultured cells can model diabetes in vitro. IXD extracts and ID-57D increased oxidative folding-associated protein expression, including p-IRE-1α, PDI and ERO-1α, with the enhanced oxidative folding pattern seen in HSG cells transiently exposed to a high concentration of glucose. Moreover, the treatments reduced the ER stress response, such as the expression of GRP78, maintaining amylase synthesis and secretion in chronically glucose-exposed HSG cells. This study suggests the potential therapeutic value of IXD extract for the treatment of diabetes or its complications such as xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is known to play an important role in many biologic systems, although the relationship between NO metabolites and periodontitis remains controversial. Moreover, little evidence of an association between salivary NO (S-NO) and periodontitis in the general population has been reported. This study aims to investigate the relationship between S-NO and periodontitis in an elderly Korean population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using participants and salivary samples from Sunchang Elderly Cohort Study. The total number of final participants was 242 (91 males and 151 females; 48 to 93 years old). Periodontitis was determined by a clinical attachment loss of >6 mm at six probe points on 12 index teeth. NO was measured in unstimulated saliva via the Griess reaction. Sociodemographic status, general/oral health, and health-related behaviors were investigated as confounders. Bivariate analysis and multivariable linear regression analyses including confounders were applied. RESULTS: After controlling for age, sex, education, salivary flow rate, number of teeth, smoking status, physical activity, hypertension, and diabetes, three metabolites of S-NO (total NO, nitrite, and nitrate) were independently associated with the percentage of probe points exhibiting periodontitis. Of these linear associations, total NO was found to have the strongest correlation with periodontitis (partial r = 0.181, P = 0.009). These associations were most pronounced in females (except for nitrate), non-smokers, those without hypertension, and those without diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that high concentrations of S-NO are associated with severe periodontitis. Thus, S-NO may serve as a potential biologic marker for detecting and monitoring periodontitis.
