Background: Firefighters, in the course of their professional responsibilities, confront an array of stressors contingent upon the distinctive characteristics of their duties.Objective: This study investigated the longitudinal impact of trauma incidents during duty on firefighters using latent transition analysis.Method: Data from 346 firefighters in South Korea who had experienced trauma events while on duty were utilized. Initially, latent groups were identified based on the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG). Groups were labelled based on the analysis of differences in PTSD, mental health, and growth-related factors among classified groups. Subsequently, transition probabilities and patterns from Time 1 to Time 2 were examined, followed by an investigation into variances based on demographic factors (gender, age) and occupational factors (work experience, shift pattern) using variance analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis.Results: First, at Time 2, a five-group model was classified into 'Growth,' 'Resilience or Numbness,' 'Struggle,' 'Partial Struggle,' and 'PTSD' groups. Second, upon examining the transition patterns between latent groups, four patterns emerged: 'continued distress,' 'growth,' 'adaptation,' and 'escalated distress.' Third, the 'Struggle' group showed a 0% probability of transitioning to the 'Growth' group, whereas it displayed the highest probability among the groups transitioning to the 'PTSD' group. Fourth, latent transition analysis results showed a strong tendency for the 'Growth' group and 'Resilience or Numbness' group to remain in the same category. Fifth, age was found to be a significant factor affecting the transition of latent groups.Conclusion: This research represents the inaugural attempt to longitudinally investigate the interplay between PTSD and PTG among firefighters.

Reducing the size of perovskite crystals to confine excitons and passivating surface defects has fueled a significant advance in the luminescence efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the persistent gap between the optical limit of electroluminescence efficiency and the photoluminescence efficiency of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) suggests that defect passivation alone is not sufficient to achieve highly efficient colloidal PeNC-LEDs. Here, we present a materials approach to controlling the dynamic nature of the perovskite surface. Our experimental and theoretical studies reveal that conjugated molecular multipods (CMMs) adsorb onto the perovskite surface by multipodal hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions, strengthening the near-surface perovskite lattice and reducing ionic fluctuations which are related to nonradiative recombination. The CMM treatment strengthens the perovskite lattice and suppresses its dynamic disorder, resulting in a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield of PeNC films and a high external quantum efficiency (26.1%) of PeNC-LED with pure green emission that matches the Rec.2020 color standard for next-generation vivid displays.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Only limited therapeutic agents have been developed for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Glabridin, a promising anti-obesity candidate, has only limited druggability due to its low in vivo chemical stability and bioavailability. Therefore, we developed vutiglabridin (VUTI), which is based on a glabridin backbone, and investigated its mechanism of action in treating NASH in animal models. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Anti-NASH effects of VUTI were determined in in vitro fatty liver models, spheroids of primary human hepatocytes and L02 normal liver cell lines. To identify VUTI possible cellular target/s, biotin-labelled VUTI was synthesized and underwent chemical proteomic analysis. Further, the evaluation of VUTI therapeutic efficacy was carried out using an amylin-NASH and high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese (DIO) mouse models. This was carried out using transcriptomic, lipidomic and proteomic analyses of the livers from the amylin-NASH mouse model. KEY RESULTS: VUTI treatment markedly reduces hepatic steatosis, fibrosis and inflammation by promoting lipid catabolism, activating autophagy and improving mitochondrial dysfunction, all of which are hallmarks of effective NASH treatment. The cellular target of VUTI was identified as paraoxonase 2 (PON2), a newly proposed protein target for the treatment of NASH, VUTI enhanced PON2 activity. The results using PON2 knockdown cells demonstrated that PON2 is important for VUTI- activation of autophagy, promoting mitochondrial function, decreasing oxidative stress and alleviating lipid accumulation under lipotoxic condition. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Our data demonstrated that VUTI is a promising therapeutic for NASH. Targeting PON2 may be important for improving liver function in various immune-metabolic diseases including NASH.

Lead-based halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have demonstrated remarkable potential for use in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This is because of their high photoluminescence quantum yield, defect tolerance, tunable emission wavelength, color purity, and high device efficiency. However, the environmental toxicity of Pb has impeded their commercial viability owing to the restriction of hazardous substances directive. Therefore, Pb-free PeNCs have emerged as a promising solution for the development of eco-friendly LEDs. This review article presents a detailed analysis of the various compositions of Pb-free PeNCs, including tin-, bismuth-, antimony-, and copper-based perovskites and double perovskites, focusing on their stability, optoelectronic properties, and device performance in LEDs. Furthermore, we address the challenges encountered in using Pb-free PeNC-LEDs and discuss the prospects and potential of these Pb-free PeNCs as sustainable alternatives to lead-based PeLEDs. In this review, we aim to shed light on the current state of Pb-free PeNC LEDs and highlight their significance in driving the development of eco-friendly LED technologies.

S-methyl-methionine (SMM), also known as vitamin U, is an important food supplement produced by various plants. In this study, we attempted to produce it in an engineered microorganism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, by introducing an MMT gene encoding a methionine S-methyltransferase from Arabidopsis thaliana. The S. cerevisiae sake K6 strain, which is a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) strain, was chosen as the host because it produces a significant amount of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), a precursor of SMM. To increase SMM production in the host, MHT1 and SAM4 genes encoding homocysteine S-methyltransferase were knocked out to prevent SMM degradation. Additionally, MMP1, which encodes S-methyl-methionine permease, was deleted to prevent SMM from being imported into the cell. Finally, ACS2 gene encoding acetyl-CoA synthase was overexpressed, and MLS1 gene encoding malate synthase was deleted to increase SAM availability. Using the engineered strain, 1.92 g/L of SMM was produced by fed-batch fermentation. ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Introducing a plant-derived MMT gene encoding methionine S-methyltransferase into engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae sake K6 allowed microbial production of S-methyl-methionine (SMM).

Heterostructures of metal halide perovskites and TiOx are efficient photocatalytic materials owing to the combination of the advantages of each compound, specifically the high absorption coefficients and long charge-carrier lifetimes of perovskites, and efficient photocatalytic activity of TiOx. However, chemical reduction of CO2 using PNC/TiOx heterostructures without organic solvents has not been reported yet. Here, we report the first solvent-free reduction of CO2 using amorphous TiOx with embedded colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). The combination was obtained by carrying out hydrolysis of titanium butoxide (TBOT) on the PNC surface without high-temperature calcination. We proposed a mechanism involving photoexcited electrons being transferred from PNCs to TBOT, enabling photocatalytic reactions using TiOx under visible-light excitation. We demonstrated efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic reactions at PNC/TiOx interfaces, specifically with a CO production rate of 30.43 µmol g-1 h-1 and accelerated degradation of organic pollutants under natural sunlight. Our work has provided a simple path toward both efficient CO2 reduction and photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

In this study, statistical analysis and forecasting were performed using coastal litter data of Korea. The analysis indicated that rope and vinyl accounted for the highest proportion of coastal litter items. The statistical analysis of the national coastal litter trends revealed that the greatest concentration of litter was observed during summer months (June-August). To predict the amount of coastal litter per meter, recurrent neural network (RNN)-based models were used. Neural basis expansion analysis for interpretable time series forecasting (N-BEATS) and neural hierarchical interpolation for time series forecasting (N-HiTS), an improved model of N-BEATS recently announced, were used for comparison with RNN-based models. When predictive performance and trend followability were evaluated, overall N-BEATS and N-HiTS outperformed RNN-based models. Furthermore, we found that average of N-BEATS and N-HiTS models yielded better results than using one model.

RESUMO

This review outlines problems and progress in development of solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (SOLEDs) in industry and academia. Solution processing has several advantages such as low consumption of materials, low-cost processing, and large-area manufacturing. However, use of a solution process entails complications, such as the need for solvent resistivity and solution-processable materials, and yields SOLEDs that have limited luminous efficiency, severe roll-off characteristics, and short lifetime compared to OLEDs fabricated using thermal evaporation. These demerits impede production of practical SOLED displays. This review outlines the industrial demands for commercial SOLEDs and the current status of SOLED development in industries and academia, and presents research guidelines for the development of SOLEDs that have high efficiency, long lifetime, and good processability to achieve commercialization.

Although hydraulic accumulators play a vital role in the hydraulic system, they face the challenges of being broken by continuous abnormal pulsating pressure which occurs due to the malfunction of hydraulic systems. Hence, this study develops anomaly detection algorithms to detect abnormalities of pulsating pressure for hydraulic accumulators. A digital pressure sensor was installed in a hydraulic accumulator to acquire the pulsating pressure data. Six anomaly detection algorithms were developed based on the acquired data. A threshold averaging algorithm over a period based on the averaged maximum/minimum thresholds detected anomalies 2.5 h before the hydraulic accumulator failure. In the support vector machine (SVM) and XGBoost model that distinguish normal and abnormal pulsating pressure data, the SVM model had an accuracy of 0.8571 on the test set and the XGBoost model had an accuracy of 0.8857. In a convolutional neural network (CNN) and CNN autoencoder model trained with normal and abnormal pulsating pressure images, the CNN model had an accuracy of 0.9714, and the CNN autoencoder model correctly detected the 8 abnormal images out of 11 abnormal images. The long short-term memory (LSTM) autoencoder model detected 36 abnormal data points in the test set.

By combining data from 160,500 individuals with breast cancer and 226,196 controls of Asian and European ancestry, we conducted genome- and transcriptome-wide association studies of breast cancer. We identified 222 genetic risk loci and 137 genes that were associated with breast cancer risk at a p < 5.0 × 10-8 and a Bonferroni-corrected p < 4.6 × 10-6, respectively. Of them, 32 loci and 15 genes showed a significantly different association between ER-positive and ER-negative breast cancer after Bonferroni correction. Significant ancestral differences in risk variant allele frequencies and their association strengths with breast cancer risk were identified. Of the significant associations identified in this study, 17 loci and 14 genes are located 1Mb away from any of the previously reported breast cancer risk variants. Pathways analyses including 221 putative risk genes identified multiple signaling pathways that may play a significant role in the development of breast cancer. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of and new biological insights into the genetics of this common malignancy.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are emerging next-generation light emitters that have attracted attention in academia and industry owing to their low material cost, simple synthesis, and wide color gamut. Efficient strategies for MHP modification are being actively studied to attain high performance demonstrated by commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on organic emitters. Active studies have overcome the limitations of the external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of green and red MHP LEDs (PeLEDs); therefore, the EQEs of PeLEDs (red: 21.3% at 649 nm; green: 23.4% at 530 nm) have nearly reached the theoretical limit for the light outcoupling of single-structured planar LEDs. However, the EQEs of blue PeLEDs (12.1% at 488 nm and 1.12% at 445 nm) are still lower than approximately half of those of green and red PeLEDs. To commercialize PeLEDs for future full-color displays, the EQEs of blue MHP emitters should be improved by approximately 2 times for sky-blue and more than 20 times for deep-blue MHP emitters to attain values comparable to the EQEs of red and green PeLEDs. Therefore, based on the reported effective approaches for the preparation of blue PeLEDs, a synergistic strategy for boosting the EQE of blue PeLEDs can be devised for commercialization in future full-color displays. This review covers efficient strategies for improving blue PeLEDs using fundamental approaches of material engineering, including compositional or dimensional engineering, thereby providing inspiration for researchers.

Skin-attachable sensors, which represent the ultimate form of wearable electronic devices that ensure conformal contact with skin, suffer from motion artifact limitations owing to relative changes in position between the sensor and skin during physical activities. In this study, a polarization-selective structure of a skin-conformable photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensor was developed to decrease the amount of scattered light from the epidermis, which is the main cause of motion artifacts. The motion artifacts were suppressed more than 10-fold in comparison with those of rigid sensors. The developed sensor-with two orthogonal polarizers-facilitated successful PPG signal monitoring during wrist angle movements corresponding to high levels of physical activity, enabling continuous monitoring of daily activities, even while exercising for personal health care.

Skip lymph node (LN) metastases in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) belong to N1b classification in the absence of central neck LN involvement. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive factors of skip metastases and their impact on recurrence in PTC patients with pN1b. A total of 334 PTC patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with LN dissection (central and lateral neck compartment) followed by radioactive iodine ablation were included. Patients with skip metastases tended to have a small primary tumor (≤1 cm) and single lateral neck level involvement. Tumor size ≤ 1 cm was an important predictive factor for skip metastases. Univariate analysis for recurrence showed that patients with a central LN ratio > 0.68, lateral LN ratio > 0.21, and stimulated thyroglobulin (Tg) levels > 7.3 ng/mL had shorter RFS (recurrence-free survival). The stimulated Tg level was associated with shorter RFS on multivariate analysis (>7.3 vs. ≤7.3 ng/mL; hazard ratio, 4.226; 95% confidence interval, 2.226-8.022; p < 0.001). Although patients with skip metastases tended to have a small primary tumor and lower burden of lateral neck LN involvement, there was no association between skip metastases and RFS in PTC with pN1b. Stimulated Tg level was a strong predictor of recurrence.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Thyroid lobectomy may cause post-lobectomy hypothyroidism. We investigated the difference in levothyroxine (LT4) supplementation and cessation between patients with benign disease and those with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and found that the rate of LT4 cessation could be decreased after thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression in PTC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 88 patients with benign tumor and 463 patients with PTC and investigated the risk factors for LT4 supplementation after thyroid lobectomy. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 73.0 months, 207 (37.6%) patients maintained the euthyroid state, while 344 (62.4%) patients continued LT4 supplementation for LT4 replacement or TSH suppression. In patients with benign tumors, only high pre-TSH level (>1.98 mIU/l) was a significant risk factor (odds ratio [OR]=10.09). However, in patients with PTC, pre-TSH level ≥1.98 mIU/l (OR=3.28), pregnancy planning (OR=2.97), and age ≥42.5 years (OR=1.94) were significant risk factors. Moreover, the most potent risk factor was tumor aggressiveness (OR=4.00), which was found to be more significant than high pre-TSH. The overall rate of LT4 cessation in all patients was 37.6%; however, in the 303 patients who underwent the LT4-Off trial, there was no difference in the rate in the benign tumor, low-risk PTC, and intermediate-risk PTC groups (66.2%, 68.8%, and 70.8%, respectively; p=0.886). CONCLUSION: When post-lobectomy TSH levels were adequate and the risk of recurrence was reduced, LT4 cessation in PTC could be achieved at the same rate as that in benign tumors, regardless of the duration of TSH suppression.

ZW800-1, a representative zwitterionic near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore, can minimize background tissue uptake owing to its balanced surface charges, and therefore, is widely used for improved NIR fluorescence imaging. As ZW800-1 has no tumor targetability, tumor imaging is highly dependent on the ability of the molecules conjugated to the ZW800-1. To enable tumor targeting using ZW800-1 without additional conjugation, we developed a tumor-targetable and renal-clearable ZW800-1 analog (ZW800-AM) based on the structural modification of ZW800-1. Specifically, an amine group on the center linker of the ZW800-1 indocyanine backbone was modified by replacing phenoxypropionic acid with tyramine linkage on the meso-chlorine atom. This modification improved the tumor targeting ability, which is known as the structure-inherent targeting strategy. More importantly, ZW800-AM not only showed sufficient tumor accumulation without nonspecific uptake but also produced a photothermal effect, killing tumor cells under 808 nm NIR laser irradiation. In addition, ZW800-AM exhibited rapid renal elimination from the body within 4 h of injection, similar to ZW800-1. Overall, the discovery of ZW800-AM as a bifunctional phototherapeutic agent may provide an ideal alternative for tumor-targeted imaging and phototherapy.

Excessive free fatty acids (FFAs) causes reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. Garcinia cambogia (G. cambogia) is used as an anti-obesity supplement, and its protective potential against NAFLD has been investigated. This study aims to present the therapeutic effects of G. cambogia on NAFLD and reveal underlying mechanisms. High-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice were administered G. cambogia for eight weeks, and steatosis, apoptosis, and biochemical parameters were examined in vivo. FFA-induced HepG2 cells were treated with G. cambogia, and lipid accumulation, apoptosis, ROS level, and signal alterations were examined. The results showed that G. cambogia inhibited HFD-induced steatosis and apoptosis and abrogated abnormalities in serum chemistry. G. cambogia increased in NRF2 nuclear expression and activated antioxidant responsive element (ARE), causing induction of antioxidant gene expression. NRF2 activation inhibited FFA-induced ROS production, which suppressed lipogenic transcription factors, C/EBPα and PPARγ. Moreover, the ability of G. cambogia to inhibit ROS production suppressed apoptosis by normalizing the Bcl-2/BAX ratio and PARP cleavage. Lastly, these therapeutic effects of G. cambogia were due to hydroxycitric acid (HCA). These findings provide new insight into the mechanism by which G. cambogia regulates NAFLD progression.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for the treatment of arterial esophageal bleeding. METHODS: Nine patients (8 male, 1 female; mean age, 62.3±7.5 years) who underwent TAE for arterial esophageal bleeding between January 2004 and January 2020 were included. Preceding endoscopic treatment was unsuccessful in five patients and was not attempted in four patients due to the non-cooperation of the patients in endoscopic treatment. The etiologies of bleeding were esophageal cancer (n=4), Mallory-Weiss syndrome (n=3), erosive esophagitis (n=1), and esophageal ulcer (n=1). Technical and clinical success, recurrent bleeding, procedure-related complications, and clinical outcomes were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The angiographic findings for bleeding were contrast media extravasation (n=8) or tumor staining without a definite bleeding focus (n=1). The bleeding focus at the distal esophagus (n=8) was the left gastric artery, whereas that at the middle esophagus (n=1) was the right bronchial artery. Technical success was achieved in all patients. The embolic agents were n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA, n=5), gelatin sponge particles (n=2), microcoils (n=1), and NBCA with gelatin sponge particles (n=1). Clinical success was achieved in 77.8% of cases (7/9); two patients with recurrent bleeding one day after the first TAE showed culprit arteries different from the bleeding foci at the first TAE. One patient who underwent embolization of both the left and short gastric arteries died of gastric infract/perforation one month after TAE. CONCLUSION: TAE can be an alternative to the treatment of arterial esophageal bleeding. TAE can be attempted in the treatment of recurrent bleeding, but there is a risk of ischemia/infarct in the gastrointestinal tract involved.

A variety of statistical models were generally considered to better understand the relationship between crash occurrences and diverse factors. However, most of statistical models adapted fixed parameters which cannot incorporate time variation or sement-specific effects. To relieve this problem, this study focuses on a traffic accident frequency model using a random parameter negative binomial approach. This method allows for the consideration of unobserved heterogeneity in accident data that current popular methods such as Poisson or Negative Binomial models cannot account for. A four-year (2007-2010) continuous panel of accident histories at 95 signalized intersections in Seoul, Korea, was used to estimate the random parameter negative binomial model with traffic volumes and various geometric characteristics at intersections. Results show that the presence of a left-turn exclusive lane on a major road, the existence and length of a median barrier, and the existence of a pedestrian island on a major road are random parameters, and an additional ten variables significantly affected the safety at the intersections as fixed parameters. The fixed parameters were associated with major and minor roadway heavy vehicle volume, exclusive turn lane presence on major and minor roadway, taxiway lane presence, median barrier presence, as well as the number of lanes on major and minor roadway. The insights from this study indicate the need for broader analysis of lane channelization, lane exclusion and lane geometry effects as potential random parameters in intersection accident propensities.

The environment of the global shipbuilding market is changing rapidly. Recently, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has tightened regulations on sulfur oxide content standards for marine fuels and tightened sulfur oxide emission standards for the entire coastal region of China to consider the environment globally and use LNG as a fuel. There is a tendency for the number of vessels to operate to increase significantly. To use cryogenic LNG fuel, various pieces of equipment, such as storage tanks or valves, are required, and equipment using steel, which has excellent impact toughness in cryogenic environments, is required. Four steel types are specified in the IGG Code, and 9% Ni steel is mostly used for LNG fuel equipment. However, to secure safety at cryogenic temperatures, a systematic study investigating the causes of quality deterioration occurring in the 9% Ni steel welding process is required and a discrimination function capable of quality evaluation is urgent. Therefore, this study proposes a plan where the uniform quality of 9% Nickel steel is secured by reviewing the tendency of the solidification crack susceptibility among the quality problems of cryogenic steel to establish the criteria for quality deterioration and to develop a system capable of quality discrimination and defect avoidance.

Sulfasalazine (SAS), an anti-inflammatory drug with potent cysteine/glutamate antiporter system xc-(SXC) inhibition has recently shown beneficial effects in brain-related diseases. Despite many reports related to central nervous system (CNS) effect of SAS, pharmacokinetics (PK) and metabolite identification studies in the brain for SAS were quite limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics and metabolite identification of SAS and their distributions in mouse brain. Using in vivo brain exposure studies (neuro PK), the PK parameters of SAS was calculated for plasma as well as brain following intravenous and oral administration at 10 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg in mouse, respectively. In addition, in vivo metabolite identification (MetID) studies of SAS in plasma and brain were also conducted. The concentration of SAS in brain was much lower than that in plasma and only 1.26% of SAS was detected in mouse brain when compared to the SAS concentration in plasma (brain to plasma ratio (%): 1.26). In the MetID study, sulfapyridine (SP), hydroxy-sulfapyridine (SP-OH), and N-acetyl sulfapyridine (Ac-SP) were identified in plasma, whereas only SP and Ac-SP were identified as significant metabolites in brain. As a conclusion, our results suggest that the metabolites of SAS such as SP and Ac-SP might be responsible for the pharmacological effect in brain, not the SAS itself.
